When Mexican vocalist released her debut solo album, , in 2008, Rolling StoneDescription: Ximena Sariñana Mediocregave it four stars and praised it as "one of the strongest debuts from a female singer-songwriter since Norah Jones' ComeAway With Me." Recording the Spanish-language album was a natural step for , who had risen to fame in herSariñanahomeland as a child actress and had fronted a successful indie band for four years. "In Mexico, people believed in me asan artist," says the fully bilingual 25-year-old. So when she began thinking about recording an album in English she wasconfronted with a tough decision: "Either stay in my country, where everyone knows who I am, or start from scratch andconvince people that I'm worth it." She chose the latter.

The result is a collection of songs that showcase her deep, striking voice, smart, thoughtful lyrics and offbeat personality. "Ithink of albums as Polaroid pictures of who I was at that given moment," says Sariñana. "All the songs are a bit dark. Theycapture a sort of general doom that I try to compensate with humor," she says. The lead single, "Different," opens with aplayful whistle but is really an apology to listeners "about maybe not expressing myself clearly because of my differentnationality," while "Bringing Us Down" was inspired by the poem "Candles" by Greek poet Constantine P. Cavafy anddeals with growing older and looking back at the fading past. The album not only reflects wise-beyond-herSariñana'syears demeanor, but also the kind of sonic growth and experimentation expected from a risk-taker.

"Everything was about forcing myself out of my comfort zone," says the singer, having leapt beyond her usual strippeddown, mellow arrangements and into more daring musical territory. "I wanted quicker, bigger sounding songs and morebass and electronic instruments," says , who plays the piano throughout. "I needed to be able to move to it onSariñanastage."

To help accomplish this, she enlisted producers Greg Kurstin (Lily Allen, Devo, The Bird and the Bee), Dave Sitek (TV onthe Radio, Yeah Yeah Yeahs) and Natalia Lafourcade. Recorded in Los Angeles, the songs are indeed snapshots;vignettes of events and emotions ornamented by lush arrangements and lightened by occasional whimsy. "CommonGround" is exalted with bells and space drums and "Wrong Miracle" includes circuit-bent children's toys and footsteps ongravel. "Echo Park," one of the last songs recorded, was built around a Casio drum machine and the need for a little comicrelief. "I wanted to write something that was going to make me laugh. I didn't want to go too deep or serious like I usuallydo," says . "I decided to make fun of how girls, especially in my world, always fall for guys in a band."Sariñana

"Tu Y Yo" (You and Me) is the only song on the album sung entirely in Spanish. "My mother language and the countrywhere I live in is such an important part of who I am," says , who was born in Guadalajara and raised partly in LASariñanabefore moving to Mexico City.

Despite her successes, has no expectations when it comes to her English-language debut. "It's my first record toSariñanaa lot of people. I just hope listeners can hear the honesty in the album," she says. "I titled it after myself because my namekeeps it close to me and who I am as an artist and a person." Over the course of nearly thirty years of a distinguished career, violinist Gidon Kremer, born in Riga in 1947, hasestablished a worldwide reputation as one of the most original and compelling artists of his generation, praised for his highdegree of individualism, his rejection of the well-trodden paths of interpretation, and his search for new possibilities. GidonKremer has made more than one hundred recordings for a number of record labels. His most recent Nonesuch release isHappy Birthday (2003), whose release follows a disc of works by Romanian composer Georges Enescu (2002) and theGrammy Award-winning After Mozart (2001). Tracing Astor (2001) marked the third disc in a trilogy of albums celebratingthe music of Astor Piazzolla, which also includes the Grammy-nominated Hommage à Piazzolla (1996) and El Tango(1997), featuring arrangements of works by Piazzolla performed by Kremer’s acclaimed Astor Quartet.

Kremer’s recordings, which have earned him a series of major international awards, have set new standards ofinterpretation. His repertoire is unusually extensive, encompassing all of the standard classical and Romantic violin works,as well as music by twentieth century masters. He has also championed the works of living Russian and Eastern Europeancomposers and has performed many important new compositions, of which several are dedicated to him. On the occasion of Franz Schubert’s200th birthday celebrations in 1997, they undertook a comprehensive concert cycle throughout Europe, includingappearances at the Salzburg Festival.

In November 1996 Gidon Kremer founded the Kremerata Baltica, a chamber orchestra to foster outstanding youngmusicians from the three Baltic States. The Kremerata Baltica, which began undertaking regular concert tours with Kremerin 1997, has signed an exclusive, six-record deal with Nonesuch Records, of which Eight Seasons (2000) was theinaugural release, followed by Silencio (2000) and After Mozart(2001). In 1997 Gidon Kremer also took over leadership ofthe Musiksommer Gstaad (Switzerland), in succession to Lord Yehudi Menuhin.

Kremer began studying the violin at the age of four with his father and grandfather, and in 1965 he became a student ofDavid Oistrach’s master class at the Moscow Conservatory. He has since been awarded the most prestigious violinistprizes, including the Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow, and the Paganini Competition in Genoa, among others. He hasalso received many music awards such as the Frankfurt Music Award, the Ernst von Siemens Music Award, the first prizeat the Accademia Musicale Chigiana and the Federal Service Cross of Germany. Over the course of nearly thirty years of a distinguished career, violinist Gidon Kremer, born in Riga in 1947, hasestablished a worldwide reputation as one of the most original and compelling artists of his generation, praised for his highdegree of individualism, his rejection of the well-trodden paths of interpretation, and his search for new possibilities. GidonKremer has made more than one hundred recordings for a number of record labels. His most recent Nonesuch release isHappy Birthday (2003), whose release follows a disc of works by Romanian composer Georges Enescu (2002) and theGrammy Award-winning After Mozart (2001). Tracing Astor (2001) marked the third disc in a trilogy of albums celebratingthe music of Astor Piazzolla, which also includes the Grammy-nominated Hommage à Piazzolla (1996) and El Tango(1997), featuring arrangements of works by Piazzolla performed by Kremer’s acclaimed Astor Quartet.

Kremer’s recordings, which have earned him a series of major international awards, have set new standards ofinterpretation. His repertoire is unusually extensive, encompassing all of the standard classical and Romantic violin works,as well as music by twentieth century masters. He has also championed the works of living Russian and Eastern Europeancomposers and has performed many important new compositions, of which several are dedicated to him. It is owing to hisnever-ending activities that we are able to appreciate composers such as Alfred Schnittke, Arvo Pärt, Sofia Gubaidulina,Valentin Silvestrov, Luigi Nono, Aribert Reimann, John Adams and Astor Piazzolla, while being able to experienceclassical music in a new way, one that bears tradition and at the same time remains contemporary.

Deeply committed to chamber music, his music festival in the small Austrian village of Lockenhaus, founded in 1981, is therealization of his belief that music can overcome all barriers of language and culture. Since 1992 the Lockenhausmusicians have been performing all over the world under the Kremerata Musica logo. On the occasion of Franz Schubert’s200th birthday celebrations in 1997, they undertook a comprehensive concert cycle throughout Europe, includingappearances at the Salzburg Festival.

In November 1996 Gidon Kremer founded the Kremerata Baltica, a chamber orchestra to foster outstanding youngmusicians from the three Baltic States. The Kremerata Baltica, which began undertaking regular concert tours with Kremerin 1997, has signed an exclusive, six-record deal with Nonesuch Records, of which Eight Seasons (2000) was the

Kremer began studying the violin at the age of four with his father and grandfather, and in 1965 he became a student ofDavid Oistrach’s master class at the Moscow Conservatory. He has since been awarded the most prestigious violinistprizes, including the Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow, and the Paganini Competition in Genoa, among others. He hasalso received many music awards such as the Frankfurt Music Award, the Ernst von Siemens Music Award, the first prizeat the Accademia Musicale Chigiana and the Federal Service Cross of Germany. Kremer has appeared on virtually everymajor concert stage with the most celebrated orchestras of Europe and America, and has recorded with today’s foremostconductors including Leonard Bernstein, Christoph Eschenbach, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Herbert von Karajan and RiccardoMuti. In the new, collaborative quartet James Farm, the prodigious other members - pianistAaron Parks, bassist Matt Penman, drummer Eric Harland - share equal billing with Redman. Mehldau's musical personality forms a dichotomy. He is first and foremost an improviser, and greatly cherishes thesurprise and wonder that can occur from a spontaneous musical idea that is expressed directly, in real time. But he alsohas a deep fascination for the formal architecture of music, and it informs everything he plays. In his most inspired playing,the actual structure of his musical thought serves as an expressive device. As he plays, he listens to how ideas unwind,and the order in which they reveal themselves. Each tune has a strongly felt narrative arch, whether it expresses itself in abeginning, an end, or something left intentionally open-ended. The two sides of Mehldau's personality-the improviser andthe formalist-play off each other, and the effect is often something like controlled chaos.

Mehldau has performed around the world at a steady pace since the mid-1990s, with his trio and as a solo pianist. Hisperformances convey a wide range of expression. There is often an intellectual rigor to the continuous process ofabstraction that may take place on a given tune, and a certain density of information. That could be followed by a strippeddown, emotionally direct ballad. Mehldau favors juxtaposing extremes. He has attracted a sizeable following over theyears, one that has grown to expect a singular, intense experience in his performance.

Caetano Veloso, dubbed "one of the greatest songwriters of the century" ( ), is among the most influentialNew York Timesand beloved artists to emerge from Brazil. Known there since the 1960s, Veloso has made more than 30 recordings todate and has developed a strong international following.

Born in Santo Amaro, Bahia, in 1942, Caetano Veloso began his professional musical career in 1965 in São Paulo. In hisfirst compositions he drew on the bossa novas of João Gilberto, but rapidly began to develop his own distinctive style.Absorbing musical and aesthetic ideas from sources as diverse as The Beatles, concrete poetry, the French Dadaists, andthe Brazilian modernist poets of the 1920s, Caetano, together with Gilberto Gil, Gal Costa, his sister Maria Bethânia, and anumber of other poets and intellectuals, founded a movement called Tropicália. By experimenting with new sounds andwords, adding electric guitars to their bands, and utilizing the imagery of modern poetry, Caetano became a musicalrevolutionary.

This short-lived movement, founded in 1968, ended abruptly when Caetano and Gil were sent into exile and lived inLondon. Now universally credited with redefining what is known as Brazilian music, it laid the groundwork for arenaissance of Brazilian popular music both at home and abroad. Caetano and Gil returned to Brazil in 1972 and foundthat Tropicália had remained intact and their audience had continued to grow.

Although Tropicália set the tone for Caetano's career, his music has evolved greatly over the years. Incorporatingelements of rock, reggae, fado, tango, samba canão, baião, and rap-with lyrics containing some of the best poetry in amusical tradition rich in verse-Caetano's music is sometimes traditional, sometimes contemporary, often hybrid. At once anastute social commentator and balladeer of highly emotive love songs, Caetano is one of the most respected poets in thePortuguese language. Indeed he is one of only a handful of artists who has resolved how to be musically modern and stillundeniably Brazilian.

Veloso followed his 1999 Grammy Award-winning Nonesuch release, , an album which garnered widespread criticalLivroacclaim in the US and brought with it his first-ever US tour, with a soundtrack for the Carlos Diegues film . In springOrfeu2001, Nonesuch released Noites do Norte (Nights of the North), a meditation on themes of race, slavery, and Brazil'squest for a national identity. Later that year came , a live recording made in 1997 in RiminiOmaggio a Federico e Giuliettain honor of two masters of Italian cinema, Federico Fellini and Giulietta Masina. The following year brought another livealbum, a double disc recorded in Caetano's home state, called Live in Bahia, released in conjunction with the publication,by Knopf, of Caetano's long-awaited memoir, .Tropical Truth: A Story of Music and Revolution in Brazil

In September 2003, Nonesuch released The Best of Caetano Veloso, a retrospective of Veloso's work from 1989 to 2001,including a live rendition of the haunting "Cucurrucucú Paloma," featured in Pedro Almodovar's Talk to Her.
