ARTIST & INFO

Over ten years ago, Di Mauro left his country of Italyand moved to the beautiful beaches of Playa Del Carmen, Mexico, searching for his opportunity to introduce his vocal andsongwriting talents to Latin America and the U.S. After building a name for hismself locally, his songwriting talents startedreaching prominent people in the world of publishing and he eventually hooked up with Warner Chappel as one of theirmany songwriters. This song, a duo withRBD's Maite Perroni, has not only become one of the biggest hits in Mexico in the last year, but in the U.S. as well. Nowthis summer, Di Mauro hits the U.S. with more than just a hit song at radio. He will also be performing the hit, A PARTIRDE HOY, live on Premios Juventud w/ Perroni. But even stronger than this opportunity, Di Mauro will act and perform thesong on the final episode of the Univision hit soap, El Triunfo Del Amor, airing this coming August. ALBUM FACTS

Genre: Pop  Greg Kurstin (Lily Allen, Devo, The Bird and the Bee)Producers:Dave Sitek (TV on the Radio, Yeah Yeah Yeahs)Natalia Lafourcade

When Mexican vocalist released her debut solo album, , in 2008, Rolling StoneDescription: Ximena Sariñana Mediocregave it four stars and praised it as "one of the strongest debuts from a female singer-songwriter since Norah Jones' ComeAway With Me." Recording the Spanish-language album was a natural step for , who had risen to fame in herSariñanahomeland as a child actress and had fronted a successful indie band for four years. "In Mexico, people believed in me asan artist," says the fully bilingual 25-year-old. So when she began thinking about recording an album in English she wasconfronted with a tough decision: "Either stay in my country, where everyone knows who I am, or start from scratch andconvince people that I'm worth it." She chose the latter.

The result is a collection of songs that showcase her deep, striking voice, smart, thoughtful lyrics and offbeat personality. "Ithink of albums as Polaroid pictures of who I was at that given moment," says Sariñana. "All the songs are a bit dark. Theycapture a sort of general doom that I try to compensate with humor," she says. The lead single, "Different," opens with aplayful whistle but is really an apology to listeners "about maybe not expressing myself clearly because of my differentnationality," while "Bringing Us Down" was inspired by the poem "Candles" by Greek poet Constantine P. Cavafy anddeals with growing older and looking back at the fading past. The album not only reflects wise-beyond-herSariñana'syears demeanor, but also the kind of sonic growth and experimentation expected from a risk-taker.

"Everything was about forcing myself out of my comfort zone," says the singer, having leapt beyond her usual strippeddown, mellow arrangements and into more daring musical territory. "I wanted quicker, bigger sounding songs and morebass and electronic instruments," says , who plays the piano throughout. "I needed to be able to move to it onSariñanastage."

To help accomplish this, she enlisted producers Greg Kurstin (Lily Allen, Devo, The Bird and the Bee), Dave Sitek (TV onthe Radio, Yeah Yeah Yeahs) and Natalia Lafourcade. Recorded in Los Angeles, the songs are indeed snapshots;vignettes of events and emotions ornamented by lush arrangements and lightened by occasional whimsy. "CommonGround" is exalted with bells and space drums and "Wrong Miracle" includes circuit-bent children's toys and footsteps ongravel. "Echo Park," one of the last songs recorded, was built around a Casio drum machine and the need for a little comicrelief. "I wanted to write something that was going to make me laugh. Sabatoge is the sixth studio album by the British heavy metal band Black Sabbath, released in July 1975.

Black Sabbath began work on their sixth album in February 1975, again in England at Morgan Studios in Willesden,London. They had a decisive vision to differ the sound from their previous album . Guitarist TonySabbath Bloody SabbathIommi, who produced the album, said that "We could've continued and gone on and on, getting more technical, usingorchestras and everything else which we didn't particularly want to. We took a look at ourselves, and we wanted to do a

In comparison, the band's first album, (1970), took only 12Black Sabbathhours to record at a cost of a few hundred pounds.

ALBUM FACTS

Genre: Rock

Description:

Sabbath Bloody Sabbath is the fifth studio album by the British heavy metal band Black Sabbath, released in December1973. With this album, the band expanded upon their slow, crunching style of music by strings, keyboards and morecomplex orchestral arrangements.

Following the 1972-1973 world tour in support of their Volume 4 album, Black Sabbath again returned to Los Angeles,California to begin work on its successor. Pleased with , the band sought to recreate the recording atmosphere,Volume 4and returned to the Record Plant Studios with new producer and engineer Tom Allom. Although the album credits theband's manager Patrick Meehan as producer, guitarist Tony Iommi said "Meehan's ego got involved, and he stuck his

.name down as producer"

With new musical innovations of the era, the band were surprised to find the room they had used previously at the RecordPlant was replaced by a "giant synthesizer". The band rented a house in Bel Air and began writing in the summer of 1973,but due in part to substance issues and fatigue, were unable to complete any songs. "Ideas weren't coming out the way

Iommi said. they were on Volume 4 and we really got discontent" "Everybody was sitting there waiting for me to come up After awith something. I just couldn't think of anything. And if I didn't come up with anything, nobody would do anything."

month in Los Angeles with no results, the band opted to return to the UK, where they rented Clearwell Castle in The Forestof Dean, Gloucestershire, England. "We rehearsed in the dungeons and it was really creepy but it had some atmosphere,

While working in the dungeon, Iommi stumbled onto the main riffit conjured up things, and stuff started coming out again".of "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath", which set the tone for the new material. Recording was completed at Morgan Studios inWillesden, North London in 1973. Keyboardist Rick Wakeman of the band Yes (who was recording Tales fromTopographic Oceans with Yes in the next studio) was brought in as a session player, appearing on "Sabbra Cadabra".

It was on Frisell's critically-lauded "Quartet" album of 1995 - with its cover art by Thomas Hart Benton - thatDescription:his compositional style took its most palpable turn toward a personalized brand of Americana. Foregoing a rhythm sectionand adding horns, he fashioned an ensemble sound that ultimately owed more to the chamber music tradition than thejazz group. On his subsequent projects, beginning with the milestone "Nashville", Frisell placed his compositions in thehands of seasoned alt-country players who interpreted the roots-inflected aspect of his writing with richly-hued virtuosity. These varying collaborations - heavily seasoned with country and rock - have resulted in the best-selling albums of theguitarist's career, and several seasons of much-praised roadwork.

On this latest effort, Frisell combines personnel from both these phases of his career, and intertwines them in anoutstanding set of new compositions that add yet another dimension to an aristry in its prime.

His passionate readings of the composer's works range from haunting toromantic to rigorous to melancholy. One of the world's best known classical violinists, Kremer ventures into this musicalstyle for the first time.

ARTIST & INFO

Over the course of nearly thirty years of a distinguished career, violinist Gidon Kremer, born in Riga in 1947, hasestablished a worldwide reputation as one of the most original and compelling artists of his generation, praised for his highdegree of individualism, his rejection of the well-trodden paths of interpretation, and his search for new possibilities. GidonKremer has made more than one hundred recordings for a number of record labels. His most recent Nonesuch release isHappy Birthday (2003), whose release follows a disc of works by Romanian composer Georges Enescu (2002) and theGrammy Award-winning After Mozart (2001). Tracing Astor (2001) marked the third disc in a trilogy of albums celebratingthe music of Astor Piazzolla, which also includes the Grammy-nominated Hommage à Piazzolla (1996) and El Tango(1997), featuring arrangements of works by Piazzolla performed by Kremer’s acclaimed Astor Quartet.

Kremer’s recordings, which have earned him a series of major international awards, have set new standards ofinterpretation. His repertoire is unusually extensive, encompassing all of the standard classical and Romantic violin works,as well as music by twentieth century masters. He has also championed the works of living Russian and Eastern Europeancomposers and has performed many important new compositions, of which several are dedicated to him. It is owing to hisnever-ending activities that we are able to appreciate composers such as Alfred Schnittke, Arvo Pärt, Sofia Gubaidulina,Valentin Silvestrov, Luigi Nono, Aribert Reimann, John Adams and Astor Piazzolla, while being able to experienceclassical music in a new way, one that bears tradition and at the same time remains contemporary.

Deeply committed to chamber music, his music festival in the small Austrian village of Lockenhaus, founded in 1981, is therealization of his belief that music can overcome all barriers of language and culture. Since 1992 the Lockenhausmusicians have been performing all over the world under the Kremerata Musica logo. On the occasion of Franz Schubert’s200th birthday celebrations in 1997, they undertook a comprehensive concert cycle throughout Europe, includingappearances at the Salzburg Festival.

In November 1996 Gidon Kremer founded the Kremerata Baltica, a chamber orchestra to foster outstanding youngmusicians from the three Baltic States. The Kremerata Baltica, which began undertaking regular concert tours with Kremerin 1997, has signed an exclusive, six-record deal with Nonesuch Records, of which Eight Seasons (2000) was theinaugural release, followed by Silencio (2000) and After Mozart(2001). In 1997 Gidon Kremer also took over leadership ofthe Musiksommer Gstaad (Switzerland), in succession to Lord Yehudi Menuhin.

Kremer began studying the violin at the age of four with his father and grandfather, and in 1965 he became a student ofDavid Oistrach’s master class at the Moscow Conservatory. He has since been awarded the most prestigious violinistprizes, including the Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow, and the Paganini Competition in Genoa, among others. He hasalso received many music awards such as the Frankfurt Music Award, the Ernst von Siemens Music Award, the first prizeat the Accademia Musicale Chigiana and the Federal Service Cross of Germany. Kremer has appeared on virtually every

Although already well-established with audiences and critics throughout the world, violinist Gidon Kremer hasDescription:achieved a new level of global recognition with his recordings of the music of . His remarkable affinity forAstor Piazzollathe composer is brought to a striking new project that pairs the Argentinian composer's "Four Seasons" with the Vivaldiwork of the same name: perhaps the best-known piece of classical music there is.

The Kremerata Baltica, which began undertaking regular concert tours with Kremerin 1997, has signed an exclusive, six-record deal with Nonesuch Records, of which Eight Seasons (2000) was the

inaugural release, followed by Silencio (2000) and After Mozart(2001).

Kremer has appeared on virtually everymajor concert stage with the most celebrated orchestras of Europe and America, and has recorded with today’s foremostconductors including Leonard Bernstein, Christoph Eschenbach, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Herbert von Karajan and RiccardoMuti. Gidon Kremer plays a Guarneri del Gesù - ex David - dating from 1730.

For his nearly 20 years as a major-label artist, jazz chart-topping saxophonist and composer Joshua Redman has led awide range of adventurous combos, from the large-scale, classic repertoire-oriented SFJAZZ Collective to hisfunk-oriented trio, Elastic Band. In the new, collaborative quartet James Farm, the prodigious other members - pianistAaron Parks, bassist Matt Penman, drummer Eric Harland - share equal billing with Redman. As he has explained, "Everybody in this band is a composer and all the decisions are made collectively. The sound of the band, the directionthat each performance takes, the set list; they're all determined equally by us as band members."

Though younger than Redman, his band mates boast equally impressive resumes, having played individually with suchartists as Terence Blanchard, Dave Holland, Betty Carter, McCoy Tyner, Kurt Rosenwinkel, and Charles Lloyd, and areamong the most in-demand players in jazz right now. Penman and Harland were part of the SFJAZZ Collective and bothappeared on Parks' acclaimed 2007 Blue Note solo debut, Invisible Cinema, which caught the ear of Redman and in partled to the formation of this new group.

Jazz pianist Brad Mehldau has recorded and performed extensively since the early 1990s. Mehldau's most consistentoutput over the years has taken place in the trio format. Starting in 1996, his group released a series of five records onWarner Bros. entitled The Art of the Trio. Mehldau also has a solo piano recording entitled , and a recordElegiac Cyclecalled that includes both solo piano and trio songs. and might be called "concept" albums.Places Elegiac Cycle PlacesThey are made up exclusively of original material and have central themes that hover over the compositions. OtherMehldau recordings include , a collaborative effort with the innovative musician and producer Jon Brion, and Largo

-a trio outing with bassist Larry Grenadier and drummer Jorge Rossy. His first record for Nonesuch, Anything Goes Brad, was released in 2004. After ten rewarding years with Rossy playing in Mehldau's regular trio,Mehldau Live in Tokyo

drummer Jeff Ballard joined the band in 2005. The label releasesd its first album from the Brad Mehldau Trio-Day is Done-in 2005.

Mehldau's musical personality forms a dichotomy. He is first and foremost an improviser, and greatly cherishes thesurprise and wonder that can occur from a spontaneous musical idea that is expressed directly, in real time. But he alsohas a deep fascination for the formal architecture of music, and it informs everything he plays. In his most inspired playing, the actual structure of his musical thought serves as an expressive device. As he plays, he listens to how ideas unwind, and the order in which they reveal themselves. Each tune has a strongly felt narrative arch, whether it expresses itself in abeginning, an end, or something left intentionally open-ended. The two sides of Mehldau's personality-the improviser andthe formalist-play off each other, and the effect is often something like controlled chaos.

Mehldau has performed around the world at a steady pace since the mid-1990s, with his trio and as a solo pianist. Hisperformances convey a wide range of expression. There is often an intellectual rigor to the continuous process ofabstraction that may take place on a given tune, and a certain density of information. That could be followed by a strippeddown, emotionally direct ballad. Mehldau favors juxtaposing extremes. He has attracted a sizeable following over theyears, one that has grown to expect a singular, intense experience in his performance.

In addition to his trio and solo projects, Mehldau has worked with a number of great jazz musicians, including a rewardinggig with saxophonist Joshua Redman's band for two years, recording and concerts with Charlie Haden and Lee Konitz,

and recording as a sideman with the likes of Wayne Shorter, John Scofield, and Charles Lloyd. For more than a decade,he has collaborated with several musicians and peers whom he respects greatly, including the guitarists Peter Bernsteinand Kurt Rosenwinkel and tenor saxophonist Mark Turner. Mehldau also has played on a number of recordings outside ofthe jazz idiom, like Willie Nelson's and singer-songwriter Joe Henry's . His music has appeared in severalTeatro Scarmovies, including Stanley Kubrick's and Wim Wender's . He also composed an originalEyes Wide Shut Million Dollar Hotelsoundtrack for the French film, . Mehldau also composed two new works commissioned byMa Femme Est Une ActriceCarnegie Hall for voice and piano, and which were performedThe Blue Estuaries The Book of Hours: Love Poems to God,in the spring of 2005 with the acclaimed classical soprano, Renee Fleming. These songs were recorded with Fleming andreleased in 2006 on the record; simultaneously, Nonesuch released an album of Mehldau's jazzLove Sublimecompositions for trio entitled .House on Hill

On Pat Metheny's ambitious, experimental 2010 Orchestrion -named Jazz Album of the Year in Downbeat's 2010 Reader'sPoll -- -the guitarist and composer employed a phalanx of custom-made robotic instruments to create a thrilling anddecidedly futuristic sort of "solo" recording. For What's It All About, he simply picked up his baritone guitar. This ten-songdisc is the first in Metheny's nearly forty-year recording career to feature an entire set of material drawn from outsidecomposers, but, as one might expect, it's far from an ordinary "covers" album. Metheny, ruminates upon, improvisesaround and at times deconstructs the melodies of these Top 40 numbers, songs he heard growing up in the sixties andearly seventies and that have resonated with him ever since. They include such iconic tracks as "The Girl From Ipanema,""Rainy Days and Mondays" and "Alfie," in which the already haunting movie theme is distilled to its gorgeously melancholyessence. These intimate, unadorned performances, recorded alone by Metheny in his New York City apartment, representa process of rediscovery more than reinterpretation. Rich with personal meaning, they are as revealing about Metheny'screative process and fertile imagination as about the malleability of the songs themselves.

What's It All About, in approach, serves as a companion to Metheny's austerely beautiful 2003 Grammy Award-winningOne Quiet Night, a solo disc in which Metheny first began to explore the possibilities of his new baritone guitar. AsMetheny, the recipient of 17 Grammy Awards to date, explains, "I really wanted to keep it simple - one guitar, one player,as was the case on . There are no overdubs on the record. But where this one differs from One Quiet Night One Quiet

is that I really focused on each tune along the way. Sometimes I would sit and think about each piece for hoursNightbefore hitting the record button, practicing things and imagining a final performance. There are some edits here and therewhere I found sort of an idealized version of what I was shooting for, but the idea was to stay true to a particular way ofplaying and hearing the song by again, keeping the performance aspect of it really simple....I was able to get to what Iwanted just sitting there with the instrument in hand." Along with the baritone guitar, he also picks up a nylon string guitarfor his rendition of the Beatles "And I Love Her"; a six-string for the Chantay's "Pipeline"; and a custom-made 42-string,harp-like Pikasso guitar for a stunning, opening-track take on "The Sounds Of Silence." Metheny's plucking of the Pikassorecalls the sound of the Japanese Koto, underscoring the contemplative nature of this enterprise.

London's recently cited Metheny as part of its Great Moments in Jazz series, noting, "Metheny is that rareThe Guardianjazz musician who combines a pop-composer's instinct for an anthemic melody with a virtuoso ability to play extendedspontaneous solos without repeating himself....More than any other jazz guitarist of the post-bop era, Pat Metheny hasgiven the instrument as natural and prominent a place in jazz as a trumpet or a saxophone." Comments Metheny himself,"My goal has always been to honestly represent the music that I really love in everything I do. This is really just anotherchapter in that ongoing search for the good notes."

ARTIST & INFO

Hometown: santo amaro, bahia

Caetano Veloso, dubbed "one of the greatest songwriters of the century" ( ), is among the most influentialNew York Timesand beloved artists to emerge from Brazil. Known there since the 1960s, Veloso has made more than 30 recordings todate and has developed a strong international following.

Born in Santo Amaro, Bahia, in 1942, Caetano Veloso began his professional musical career in 1965 in São Paulo. In hisfirst compositions he drew on the bossa novas of João Gilberto, but rapidly began to develop his own distinctive style.Absorbing musical and aesthetic ideas from sources as diverse as The Beatles, concrete poetry, the French Dadaists, andthe Brazilian modernist poets of the 1920s, Caetano, together with Gilberto Gil, Gal Costa, his sister Maria Bethânia, and anumber of other poets and intellectuals, founded a movement called Tropicália. By experimenting with new sounds andwords, adding electric guitars to their bands, and utilizing the imagery of modern poetry, Caetano became a musicalrevolutionary.

This short-lived movement, founded in 1968, ended abruptly when Caetano and Gil were sent into exile and lived inLondon. Now universally credited with redefining what is known as Brazilian music, it laid the groundwork for arenaissance of Brazilian popular music both at home and abroad. Caetano and Gil returned to Brazil in 1972 and foundthat Tropicália had remained intact and their audience had continued to grow.

Although Tropicália set the tone for Caetano's career, his music has evolved greatly over the years. Incorporatingelements of rock, reggae, fado, tango, samba canão, baião, and rap-with lyrics containing some of the best poetry in amusical tradition rich in verse-Caetano's music is sometimes traditional, sometimes contemporary, often hybrid. At once anastute social commentator and balladeer of highly emotive love songs, Caetano is one of the most respected poets in thePortuguese language. Indeed he is one of only a handful of artists who has resolved how to be musically modern and stillundeniably Brazilian.

Veloso followed his 1999 Grammy Award-winning Nonesuch release, , an album which garnered widespread criticalLivroacclaim in the US and brought with it his first-ever US tour, with a soundtrack for the Carlos Diegues film . In springOrfeu2001, Nonesuch released Noites do Norte (Nights of the North), a meditation on themes of race, slavery, and Brazil'squest for a national identity. Later that year came , a live recording made in 1997 in RiminiOmaggio a Federico e Giuliettain honor of two masters of Italian cinema, Federico Fellini and Giulietta Masina. The following year brought another livealbum, a double disc recorded in Caetano's home state, called Live in Bahia, released in conjunction with the publication,by Knopf, of Caetano's long-awaited memoir, .Tropical Truth: A Story of Music and Revolution in Brazil

In September 2003, Nonesuch released The Best of Caetano Veloso, a retrospective of Veloso's work from 1989 to 2001,including a live rendition of the haunting "Cucurrucucú Paloma," featured in Pedro Almodovar's Talk to Her. The followingspring came A Foreign Sound, his first all-English set, paying tribute to 20th-century American pop composers, from Cole

Porter to Kurt Cobain. And in January 2007, Veloso, backed by a young Brazilian trio, created a surprisingly brash rocksound for the album Cê, about which the Boston Globe notes, "The man's voice is as richly seductive and thoughtful asever." His lyrics "offer intellectual and cultural queries ... suffused with yearning and ambiguous eroticism."
