TheChristmasOratorioisprobablythemostpopularspiritualworkbyJohannSebastianBach.Thecompositionforchoir,orchestraandvocalsoloistsillustratestheBiblicalChristmasstoryandwaswrittenatatimewhenBachwasemployedascantoratthefamousSt.ThomasChurchinLeipzig.ItiscomprisedofseveralpartsoriginallyintendedforchurchservicesonSundaysandreligiousholidaysbetweenChristmasandEpiphany.Itwasfirstperformedinsectionsinthewinterof1734/35underBach’sbaton.Soonafterwards,thecomposermergedthesixhighlyuniformpartstocreatetheChristmasOratorio.However,owingtoitsconsider-ablelengthofaroundtwo-and-a-halfhours,itwasrarelyperformedinitsentirety. DWTranstelpresentsBach’sChristmasOratorio,performedbytheRoyalConcertgebouwOrchestrafromAmsterdam,oneoftheworld’sbestorchestras,inanabridgedversionof2x50minutes.Thisversioncomprisesfourofthesixpartswhichperfectlyreflectthespiritandthemoodoftheoratorio.
