Eleazar, with experts and technical staff, participated with more than 800 attendees including organic agriculture practitioners, heads and staff of various regional offices, attached agencies and bureaus of the Department of Agriculture (DA), state universities and colleges (SUCs), local government units (LGUs), farmer groups, non-government organizations (NGOs), organic business firms, and other sectors in the 8 National Organic Agriculture Conference (NOAC) held at the Aquino Center, Hacienda Luisita, Tarlac City, on 8-11 November 2011. With the theme, “Organic Farming: Towards Food Sufficiency and Healthy Environment,” this year's conference focuses on the current and emerging issues and challenges confronting the National Organic Agriculture Program. R ecognizing the valuable contributions of science and technology (S&T) in the fruit industry, the Philippine Fruits Association (PFA) held its 19 National Fruit Symposium (NFS) on 24-28 October 2011 at the Dep-Ed Ecotech Center in Lahug, Cebu City. This year's theme was, “Harnessing Science and Technology towards a Dynamic and Sustainable Fruit Production.” th BAR-funded project wins best paper award Sapinit turn to page 2 I n an effort to promote and support the Department of Agriculture's (DA) Organic Agriculture (OA) Program, the Bureau of Agricultural Research (BAR), as the focal agency for OA in research and development (R&D), launched a handbook titled, “ during the awarding ceremony of the 23 National Research Symposium (NRS) on 11 October 2011, Manila Hotel. The handbook is a result of the University of the Philippines (UPLB) Organic Vegetable Project led by Dr. Blesilda M. Calub of the Agricultural Systems Cluster, College of Agriculture, UPLB. With the demand for information on the production of organic vegetable, the handbook is now on its second reprint which was funded by the Bureau of Agricultural Research (BAR) under its Scientific Publication Grant (SPG). The first edition was funded by the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA). Dr. Calub, in a brief presentation during the book launch, she mentioned that the handbook aims to: keep the farmers and agricultural technologies aware on the methods on organic vegetable farming, provide farmers IEC material on organic vegetable farming and that could be easily share to fellow farmers, and provide as practical materials for agricultural technologies to effectively disseminate the know-how on organic vegetable farming. The paper-thin, handy publication is composed of practical Mga Pamamaraan sa Organikong Gulayan rd Handbook on organic vegetable prod’n launched topics on the benefits of growing organic vegetable, preparing the soil that will be devoted to organic farming, managing vegetable pests, and how-tos of making vermicompost, fermented fruit juice, fermented plant juice, and manure tea. For easy information, the handbook also provides frequently asked questions (FAQ) that will help interested individuals who want to go organic but have various misconceptions and misapprehensions on the concept of “going organic”. Dr. Calub presented copies of the book to Agriculture Secretary Proceso J. Alcala who was present during the book launch. Sec. Alcala is the author of the Organic Agriculture Law when he was a congressman, and has implemented OA as one of its priority programs at the Department of Agriculture, which is now under his helm. Secretary Alcala commended both BAR and Dr. Calub for the production of such valuable IEC material that farmers could easily have accessed to. In lieu of the DA's efforts to further promote Organic Agriculture, the Secretary instructed BAR to translate in various dialects the book that was launched “to reach a wider audience in the country”. He also enjoined BAR to continue its efforts on supporting production management technologies that will help and improve the plights of smallholder farmers and fishers in the country. In an effort to promote and support theDepartment of Agriculture's (DA)Organic Agriculture (OA) Program,

the Bureau of Agricultural Research(BAR), as the focal agency for OA inresearch and development (R&D),launched a handbook titled, “

The handbook is a result of theUniversity of the Philippines (UPLB)Organic Vegetable Project led by Dr.Blesilda M. Calub of the AgriculturalSystems Cluster, College of Agriculture,UPLB. With the demand for informationon the production of organic vegetable,the handbook is now on its second reprintwhich was funded by the Bureau ofAgricultural Research (BAR) under itsScientific Publication Grant (SPG). Thefirst edition was funded by the NationalEconomic and Development Authority(NEDA).

Dr. Calub, in a brief presentationduring the book launch, she mentionedthat the handbook aims to: keep thefarmers and agricultural technologiesaware on the methods on organicvegetable farming, provide farmers IECmaterial on organic vegetable farmingand that could be easily share to fellowfarmers, and provide as practicalmaterials for agricultural technologies toeffectively disseminate the know-how onorganic vegetable farming.

the plights of smallholder farmers andfishers in the country.

One of the highlights of theevent was the announcement of thewinners for the best poster and bestpaper awards. This hopes to give duerecognition to outstanding researcher,fruit grower, and PFA members.

Therefore, the idea ofupgrading the efficacy of single non-chemical methods was conceived.With the fact on hand that a singlemethod has low efficacy, it washypothesized that combining twosingle methods should prove moreeffective. The mechanism of controlposed is that the eradicative action ofHWT will be combined with thepreventive activity of BCA or salt.

It was discovered that noresearch has been reported todetermine the compatibility of nativebacteria or fungi isolated from bananawith inorganic salts or HWT.Temperatures that are not detrimentalto the said fruit might not providecomplete control of postharvestpathogens, but such temperature could,however, retard the development of thepathogen in the fruit. Thus, a vacuummay be created that could be exploitedto its advantage by the BCA and/orsalt.

The methodology of the studyincluded the use of banana harvested at80 percent maturity at Nueva Vizcaya.Test pathogens included the mostactive causes of crown rot in banana:

, , ,and that were isolatedfrom bananas cv. Buñgulan that wereinfected with crown rot. The BCAincluded a bacterium (

DGA14) and afungus (DGA02).

The paper presented foundthat the effectiveness of BCAs can beincreased by mixing two antagonists,as their assets are combined.Furthermore, said report also depicteda table, citing the physical injuriesnotable on cv. According to Dr. Alvindia,the project generated novelinformation for sustaining theefficacy of non-chemical approachesin control of crown rot in bananas.HWT for cv. Buñgulan does not kill

fungi but does cause delay inthe development. Thus, thelow efficacy andinconsistency of HWT incontrolling crown rot disease.

Dr. Alvindia concluded that,with the potential use of their findingsthe project developed an effectivealternative to synthetic fungicide forcontrolling crown rot disease in cv.Buñgulan. It is safe to use and canactually be adopted immediately withno serious concern for additionalinvestment on equipment ormanpower.

recently concluded 23 NationalResearch Symposium, which isanually being conducted by theBureau of Agricultural Research.

production and postharvestmanagement, and are otherwiseintended for export market. Also,bananas are the Philippines' secondmost abundant export crop, with 2.8million households in the countrydependent on banana industry.

As of 2005, Dr. Alvindiareported that the Philippines is insecond place among the top 10 bananaexporting countries, with Ecuadorplacing first. The remaining countriesinclude Costa Rica, Colombia,Guatemala, Honduras, Panama,Cameroon, Brazil, and Cote d'lvoire.

Before reaching consumers,bananas are keenly inspected fordiseases and other quality defects. Acommon problem in the export marketis , a seriouspostharvest disease complex causedby several fungi. The infectionprocess starts with the fungi infectingthe crown through fresh woundscreated after trimming the crown ofthe banana hand into its crescentshape. Then, the fungi set in from thesurface of the cut crown and infect the

tissues and cause rotting. The rot thenadvances into the finger stalks, causingfingers to detach from the crown whenhandled.

Up until the early 90s, it wasreported that crown rot was notconsidered a serious problem assynthetic fungicides were used aspostharvest dip treatment. However,with the growing concern for foodsafety and the environment, as well ascertain restrictions on chemical use,crown rot is becoming a seriouspostharvest disease. Therefore,researchers such as Dr. Alvindia andMs. Cuaresma are exploring alternativemethods to replace fungicides.

Alternatives to syntheticfungicides for banana crown rot includehot water treatment (HWT), biologicalcontrol (BCA), inorganic salts, andinorganic salts with surfactant.However, remarks discussed during thebrief presentation for each methodposed issues such as: HWT being not aseffective as fungicides; BCA as solemethod is not comparable withfungicide; inorganic salts crystallizedwhen dried, thus providing variation inreplicated results; and inorganic saltswith surfactant is acceptable but stillnot as excellent when compared withfungicide.

For more than two decades now,NRS is being annually conducted byBAR to recognize the importance ofagriculture and fishery research anddevelopment (R&D) in promoting thenation's economic well-being and thevital role of researchers as catalyst fordeveloping R&D that matters to thesector. Also, to highlight significantresearch results and technologiesgenerated and conducted by researchersand scientists in the fields of agricultureand fisheries.

This year's competition focusedon the theme, “Harnessing Research forSafe and Healthy Food and Agri-FisheryProducts,” defining the pivotal role ofR&D in addressing the safe and healthissues in the agriculture and fisheriesproducts. Over the years, many advancesin food production have been developedthrough R&D but throughout this course,quality and safety issues from productionto transport and storage have not beenreadily addressed or resolved.

Entries totaled 126 R&D papersentries from which 63 are qualifiersincluding the 25 presentors from whichthe 18 were awarded as winners. Thewinners were ranked based on thegarnered average point scores.

Grand Opening of the 6 DurianFestival sponsored by the AustralianCenter for International AgriculturalResearch (ACIAR) in collaborationwith the Bureau of Plant Industry(BPI), Visayas State University (VSU),and other government institutions.ACIAR has been providing funding forresearch projects to assist agriculturalR&D partners in Asia including thePhilippines.

The forum featured thepresentations of distinguished durianand jackfruit scientists from Australia,Thailand, Vietnam, and the Philippines.Local farmers, plant breeders, academe,and other stakeholders responded wellto the critical role of integrated diseasemanagement, cultural practices, properharvest and storage of crops, amongothers.

On jackfruit R&D, heacknowledged the research efforts ofDr. Carlos S. dela Cruz,superintendent of the Eastern VisayasIntegrated Agricultural ResearchCenter in Abuyog, Leyte particularlyin his recent conduct on theadaptability of available technologiesfor the management of jackfruitfruitfly. This research initiative hasearned him as the Regional GawadSaka 2011 awardee.

Rising from a simplelivelihood; today, durian and jackfruitcontinue to be the flagship ofSouthern Philippines and a championof the export industry. The Bureau of Agricultural Research(BAR) awarded two outstandingagriculture researchers in

recognition of their valuable contributionsto agriculture research and development(R&D). The awardees were: Ramon L.Rivera, division chief of the Breeding andGenetics Division of the PhilippineCoconut Authority (PCA) - ZamboangaResearch Center; and Severino Tumamang,agricultural center chief of the CagayanValley Integrated Agricultural ResearchCenter (CVIARC), Regional Field Unit(RFU) 2 based in Ilagan, Isabela.

The awardees were adjudgedduring the 23rd National ResearchSymposium (NRS) awarding ceremony on11 October 2011 at the Manila Hotel.

Rivera is a recognized plantbreeder, coconut gene bank manager, andmolecular biologist/scientist both in thelocal and international scenes. Among hisrecent contributions is the development ofthe micro-satellite or simple sequencerepeats (SSR) marker technology forcoconut and his pioneering work onmolecular biology for varietalimprovement.

As the program leader of PCA'svarietal improvement program (VIP), heimplemented innovative R&D approachesthat have led to outstanding coconuttechnologies and information beneficial tothe industry. This led to PCA's pioneeringwork on genetically enhanced coconutvariety combining high yield precocity,vigor and durable genetic stabilityproviding the answer to the country'srelentless need for low input and highquality planting materials.

Another awardee, Tumamang, isalso a plant breeder/agronomist atCVIARC, considered as DA's prime plantbreeding institution in Region 2. TheCenter has intensified its programs on cropimprovement to continue developing newand improved varieties of agricultural

crops for better yield and profit.Tumamang is well-known for developingthe best selling and well-known high-yielding open pollinated varieties (OPV)of corn including: IES No. 2, 8906, 8910,8912. He also led in the breeding of theglutinous corn varieties: IES Glut No. 4,6, and 7; and white flint varieties andOPV yellow drought resistant varieties:IES Cn 5 and 7. These are all registeredat the National Seed Industry Council(NSIC).

Perhaps, one of his mostimportant contributions is thecommercialization of these corn varietieswhich helped small and mediumenterprises (SMEs) in Ilocos region. Thedeveloped corn varieties have alsoprovided the raw materials for thepopular “Boy Bawang” brand.

Aside from Rivera andTumamang, three agricultural scientistswere also recognized as finalists of theGawad Saka Outstanding AgriculturalScientist category. They were: Dr. RoelR. Suralta of the Philippine RiceResearch Institute (PhilRice); Dr. PablitoM. Magdalita of the Crop ScienceCluster, College of Agriculture,University of the Philippines Los Baños(UPLB); and Dr. Carlos M. Dela Cruz ofthe Eastern Visayas IntegratedAgricultural Research Center (EVIARC),DA-Regional Field Unit No. 8 based inAbuyog, Leyte.

Gawad Saka, which started in1970, is an annual contest conductednationwide by DA in partnership with thelocal government units, academe and theprivate sector. One of the categories isthe Gawad Saka OutstandingAgricultural Scientist in which BARtakes the lead in the search andevaluation. Level 2 members are to dothe same, following in the footstepsof the previous level, to “pay itforward” to the next level, which arelevel 3 members. The ceremony was presidedover by the municipal agriculturistofficer, Ms. Preceva Q Villafranca. TCDstaff, Ms. Evelyn Juanillo and Mr. MarkJason Fernando delivered messages ofsupport in behalf of BAR DirectorNicomedes P. Eleazar and ExecutiveDirector of UPLB Foundation, Inc.Cecilio R. Arboleda, respectively. Thiswas followed by an end-of-project reportpresented by Dr. Bulatao.

A product of the combinedefforts of various agencies andorganizations, the project wasimplemented by the Farming Systemsand Soil Resources Institute,Agricultural Systems cluster, College ofAgriculture, University of thePhilippines Los Baños (UPLB), and theUPLB Foundation, Inc. The project wasfunded by the National Agricultural andFishery Council (NAFC) through theKR2 Program Grant Assistance forUnderprivileged Farmers and BARunder its National TechnologyCommercialization Program (NTCP).

The project was an offshoot ofanother project back in 2006. This venture consisted of fourmajor components: capabilitybuilding/training on swine production,marketing, and disease control;establishment of San Fernandounder coconut; swine dispersal andtechnical assistance; and monitoring ofeconomic impacts.

He noticedthat there is an increase in number ofbeneficial insects, hence, no need tospray pesticides/insecticides. The sizeof grains is bigger compare to thesoybean grains using inorganicfertilizer. He expected to harvest 1.5 -2 tons of soybeans in his one hectareland. There was no incidence ofsoybean diseases observed in hisfield. He reminded the participantsthat the use of organic fertilizer(vermicomposting) depends on thesubstrates used. Sustainable agriculture is theultimate goal of every society'sfood and agriculture lead

institution. The Department ofAgriculture (DA), being at the helm ofensuring that there is food in everyFilipino's table, is gearing towards thesame goal.

On this end, the Foundation forResource Linkage and Development,(FRLD) in collaboration with DA,National Agricultural and FisheryCouncil (NAFC), Bureau of Fisheriesand Aquatic Resources (BFAR), andother partner agencies organized the2011 AgriLink/FoodLink/AquaLink, thecountry's biggest and well-renownedyearly international trade show on food,agribusiness, and aquaculture. With thetheme, "Integration: Key to SustainableAgriculture", the activity was held on 6-8October 2011 at the World Trade Center,Manila.

As one of the sponsors, theBureau of Agricultural Research (BAR),in cooperation with the DA-RegionalField Unit 4A-Southern TagalogIntegrated Agricultural Research Center(STIARC) and Cavite State University(CavSU), participated in the eventfeaturing adlai and coffee in its exhibitdisplay. Also showcased were thebureau's two banner programs, theCommunity-based Participatory ActionResearch (CPAR) and the NationalTechnology Commercialization Program(NTCP).

It is only in the early 20 century thatsoybeans gained worldwidepopularity due to health-related

benefits associated with it. Since then,soybeans become an economicallyimportant crop. Aside from its foodfunction, soybeans are already utilized asoil, animal feed and as an industrial rawmaterial such as soaps and biodiesel.

In the Philippines, it is noted thatthere has been an attempt to cultivatesoybeans since the early 1980s. Being anundervalued crop in the country at thattime, the attempt was futile, thus, thesoybean industry did not prosper andremained so throughout the years. Notuntil through the leadership ofDepartment of Agriculture (DA)Secretary Proceso J. Alcala that therevival of soybean industry has beenprioritized.

Under the High Value CropsDevelopment Program (HVCDP), one ofthe banner programs of DA, soybean hasbeen included as one of its prioritycommodities. In the crafted soybeanroadmap titled, “Building SustainableSoybean Industry in the Philippines,” thegoal is to build a community-basedsustainable organic soybean production inthe country.

The Bureau of AgriculturalResearch (BAR) was tasked to facilitatethe research and development componentof the program. As part of this initiative,the Central Mindanao IntegratedAgricultural Research Center(CEMIARC) led a technologydemonstration and field day on organicsoybean production program in Tupi,South Cotabato on 20 October 2011. This

Farmers from the differentmunicipalities of South Cotabato withthe representatives from different DAattached agencies, local governmentunit, non-government organizations,and private sector, attended to witnessand participate in the technologydemonstration and program launching.

During the tour on the soybeanproject site, Ms. Aileen V. Alvarez,focal person of soybean program, DA-CEMIARC, discussed the salient pointson organic soybean productionincluding the interventions included inthe project including the differentfertilizer application.

To compare the effects ofusing organic and inorganic fertilizers,one hectare project site was dividedinto four areas corresponding to fourdifferent fertilizer applications. Inorganic, the interventions used were:vermicompost+vermitea+indigenousmicroorganisms (IMO) combinations,and vermicompost+IMO combinations.For the inorganic, basal application wasdone using 14-14-14 fertilizercombinations, and sidedress applicationusing also 14-14-14 fertilizercombinations.

Aside from seeing the soybeanin its raw stage, participants tasteddifferent cooked soybeans productsincluding: , ,soybean , fried and

soybean. There were also otherproducts such as soybean coffee androasted soybean feeds.

After the tour, participantsproceeded to Brgy. Concepcion, Tupifor the organic soybean productionprogram proper.

'Food Prices - from Crisis toStability' was the adopted theme for thisyear's event which focuses on creatingglobal awareness on factors that causefood price increases, and enjoiningnational and local governments, theprivate sector, farmers' and fishers'groups and individuals to implementinitiatives to reduce the impact of foodprices and come up with programs ormechanism designed to make foodprices affordable to the common peopleand to the poorest members of society.

In this year's celebration, DAhas lined upweek-longactivities atthe DAbuildingmain lobby,featuring theagency'sprogramthrustsparticularlyon achievingfood securityand foodstaplesufficiency.Various DAagencies and

private enterprises took part in theproduct exhibits on major staples,vegetables, iron-fortified rice, livestockand dairy products and animals, andfishery products. Also lined up aretechnology demonstrations and seminarson aquaphonics system, urbanaquaculture, and ornamental fishproduction.

The DA's Research,Development and Extension (RD&E)components were given the opportunityto present their program thrusts andinitiatives during the week-long event.The sub-committee on RD&E waschaired by BAR and co-chaired by theBureau of Soils and Water Management(BSWM). Meanwhile, the extensionservice was led by the AgriculturalTraining Institute (ATI). Tasked tocoordinate the committee for the 2011WFD National Committee was theBAR's Applied CommunicationDivision (ACD).

The sub-committee on RD&Econducted series of seminars tocomplement the initiatives of the DA'scurrent thrusts on food security and inthe promotion of staple foods. Lectureson the commercialization of adlai, whitecorn grits, vermiculture, and organicfertilizers were among the presentationsorganized by the committee.

The coast of Sariaya lies withinTayabas Bay – a known spawning groundfor various marine species. However, dueto illegal fishing operations anddestructive methods, coupled with harshweather changes affecting both the marinelife and the water, fish catch continued todecline noticeably in 2008. Discouragedfishermen were forced to either give intoillicit fishing activities (i.e., dynamitefishing), or opt out and search for othereconomic means. According to theBureau of Agricultural Statistics (BAS),market demand for fish (i.e., )fluctuated; price of fish in the marketincreased.

Headed by Bureau of Fisheriesand Aquatic Resources (BFAR)-RegionalFisheries Research and DevelopmentCenter (RFRDC) Region 4A with fundingsupport from BAR, a project thatultimately aims to bring back asustainable supply of finfishes in themarket by updating indigenous practicesand merging it with developedtechnologies was put in motion. Dr. Quimio added that theirgroup has used bamboo sticks to anchornewly planted stevia in table beds whensown during the typhoon season. Food security is a world challenge.Food, as an essential part ofhuman's existence and survival has

inevitably reached instability given themulti-faceted conflicts that sprout almosteverywhere – cutting across all sectors.

Following its thrusts on foodself sufficiency, the

Department of Agriculture (DA) incollaboration with the Food andAgriculture Organization of the UnitedNations (FAO), spearheaded thecelebration of 2011 World Food Day(WFD) on 11-14 October, with thetheme, “Food Prices – from crisis tostability”.

As member of the Research,Development and Extension (RDE)Committee, the Bureau of AgriculturalResearch (BAR) took part in the eventthrough the conduct of a two seminars on

BAR, together with DA-Regional Field Units (RFUs), and otherpartner agencies have been developing

as an alternative staple crop in linewith DA's Philippine Food Staples Self-Sufficiency Roadmap (FSSR).

BAR invited Dr. Artemio M.Salazar of the Crop Science Cluster,Institute of Plant Breeding (IPB),University of the Philippines Los Baños(UPLB), as resource speaker for thewhite corn seminar. He said, “Whitecorn is a healthy and affordablesubstitute to rice.”

The seminar aimed to providethe audience background, nutritionalanalysis, and potentials of white corn.Highlighted in the presentation were thehealth benefits of this crop. It is saidthat white corn is healthier than ricebecause it has a low glycemic index.“White corn is good for people withdiabetes,” Dr. Salazar added.

He stressed that white cornconsumption can reduce famine anddiabetes incidence among Filipinos.However, the problem is that Filipinosare used to eating rice as staple food.This is resolved through the UPLBresearchers' formulation of a rice-cornmixture that have passed sensory andacceptability tests. The white corn gritsis mixed with rice to produce 'ricecomposite'. At the end of the seminar,food tasting of white cornwas held.

To promote exchange of ideasamong several sectors, thereby,sustaining the country's reputation

as producer of premium and exportquality cacao beans, a “Regional CacaoMulti-Stakeholder Forum/Consultation”was held on 3-5 October 2011 at theIsabela State University (ISU) inEchague, Isabela.

Cacao ( ) is ahigh value tree crop suitable in differentproduction systems (monocrop,intercropping, agroforestry, etc.). Itserves as raw material of sweets such astablea, pastries, cosmetics, and otherpharmaceutical products. Aside frombeing a good source of amino acids, ithas antioxidant properties which helpsdelay aging.

Joining the forum wasrepresentatives from the Bureau ofAgricultural Research (BAR) led byAsst. Dir. Teodoro S. Solsoloy who alsoserved as the keynote speaker.

Asst. Dir. Solsoloy mentionedthe strength in technology, expertise, andgood germplasm collection of the cacaoindustry. “However, the inadequatetechnical know-how on cacao productionamong farmers and technicians/extension workers should be addressedthrough best varieties, economical andenvironmental friendly pests anddiseases control, labor-efficient farmingsystem practices, and appropriate post-harvest practices and technologies,” hestressed.

Given the potential of cacao as ahigh value crop, BAR has beenproviding R&D funding support toseveral projects on cacao.

The forum was anchored on theon-going BAR funded project titled,Sustainable Cacao Program: Bio-intensive IPM and Farming SystemApproaches” which is being led by theCocoa Foundation of the Philippines(Cocoa Phil)—non-profit organization offarmers, cacao buyers and processors,and committed professionals whichstands as the umbrella organization forthe cocoa industry in the Philippines.

These are: Criollo, Forastero, andTrinitario. Among them, Criollo hassuperior quality and relativelysusceptible to pest and disease.Forastero is a high yielding varietywith round pod and thick-walled whichturn yellow when ripe and has flat,violet seeds; one group of this isAmenolado. On the other hand,Trinitario is a hybrid between Criolloand Amellonado.

An important skill to belearned in cacao industry is properdrying, according to reports. In Ghana,Indonesia, and Vietnam, the usualpractice is to expose the beans underdirect sunlight. Nowadays, many arealready using mechanical dryers whichhasten the procedure.

A presentation of Dr. DivinaA. Amalin, a DOST Balik Scientistawardee from University of Florida,Miami, focused on the Bio-IntensiveIPM of cocoa pests and diseases. In herreport, she mentioned that moleculardiagnostic laboratories can rapidlydetect plant problems. Important cacaoinsect pests and diseases include cacaopod borer (CPB), mirid/capsid bug,helopeltis, among others. Available

control measures such as sleeving, earlyharvesting, sanitation, chemical controlmay help reduce damage. “Today, insectmonitoring tools such as sex pheromonetrap specific to cacao pod borer is used.Interestingly, biological control (bio-control) measures which are proven safeand eco-friendly include: 1) Classical(Applied) Biological Control which isthe introduction of biological controlagents from the origin of the pests; and2) Natural (Native) Biological Controlwhich refers to the use of nativebiological control agents.

Currently, an R&D Roadmapfor Cacao has been crafted. In particular,Region 2, being the host for themultistakeholders' forum has warmed-up its engine and is now ready fortakeoff on the following areas:Conservation of Genetic Resources,Establishment and Production,Prevention and Control of Pests andDiseases, Postharvest Processing andEnhancement of Quality, SecondaryProcessing and Product Development,Industry and Socio-economic Analysis,and Development of National StrategicInitiatives.
