CALL TO WORSHIP Let us test and examine our ways, and return to the Lord! Seek the Lord while He may be found, call upon Him while He is near.
Prayer of Invocation/Confession
Gracious God, we gather here today
to be reminded that we are people
consumed by your love. Empower us
through your Holy Spirit to surrender
to Your will and your purpose. We
are not here for any other reason
today than to glorify you and your
love for a world that is lost. We
humbly admit our sin and
wrongdoing. We confess and we are
sorry. Forgive us, we pray. Take our
sin away and restore us. Thank you
for loving and claiming us as your
children. Use us in whatever way you
would, for whatever cause you would
and for whatever reason that you
would. In the name and spirit of a
risen Lord, Hear our prayer. Amen.
PASTORAL CANDIDATE - Rev. Carnel H. L. Richardson
Rev. Carnel H.L. Richardson accepted Christ into his life and was baptized at seven years of age at the Greater New Mt. Moriah Missionary Baptist Church in Detroit, Michigan by the esteemed and late Rev. Dr. Benjamin L. Hooks and Rev. Joe Page. Rev. Richardson received and accepted his call to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ as a teenager. Since that time, Rev. Carnel has been faithful to this ministry assignment and it has afforded him the opportunity to preach in various pulpits and speak at various conferences, including the First Baptist Church of Cap-Haitian, Haiti. Rev. Carnel currently
serves in dual roles as the Lead Pastoral Minister and Youth and Young Adult Pastor of the New Prospect Missionary Baptist Church in Detroit, Michigan. In addition to those responsibilities, Rev. Richardson serves as the Director of the New Prospect After-School Program. He was licensed, ordained, and prepared for pastoral ministry at Holy Cross Missionary Baptist Church in Detroit, Michigan under the tutelage and direction of the Rev. Dr. Lorenzo Edwards, Sr. Holy Cross Baptist Church is the church in which he was raised and received much of his spiritual foundation. In 2011, he was presented an award as a “Son of the Cross” by Holy Cross Baptist for his continued work in ministry. In the past, he has served in pastoral roles assisting pastors at other churches, which have contributed to his pastoral experience.
Rev. Carnel considers his most influential pastor and leader to be the late Rev. Dr. Wilma R. Johnson. In 2007, Rev. Richardson joined the New Prospect Missionary Baptist Church under Dr. Johnson’s leadership and served for several years as a part of the pulpit ministry and Crown Forum Ministry and was later added to the pastoral staff. As a servant-leader, Rev. Richardson has dedicated much of his professional career to public service which has included staff roles in the non-profit, city government, education, and religious sectors. As a strong and committed youth and young adult pastor, this man of faith works diligently to respond to the spiritual and social needs of the youth and young adults entrusted to his care. During his sojourn in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Rev. Richardson directed efforts to reach at-risk African American youth through the Scoutreach character development program in Kent, Muskegon, and Allegan counties. During his tenure the program was able to reach over 10,000 youth and families.
Educationally, Rev. Richardson has earned an Associate’s degree in Teacher Education and a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English with a minor in Communication from Ferris State University. Additionally, Rev. Richardson has earned a Master’s Degree with a specialization in Christian Formation and Divinity from Grand Rapids Theological Seminary at Cornerstone University; he is currently pursuing a Doctorate of Education Degree from Cornerstone University in Grand Rapids, Michigan where he assisted in teaching courses in Christian Spiritual Formation to undergraduate students majoring in ministry under the direction of Dr. Philip Bustrum. In 2005, his sermon, More Than a Conqueror was published in the African Methodist Episcopal Church’s most popular devotional known as Writings on the Heart. In the past, Rev. Richardson has received many awards and accolades for his leadership in community affairs and humanitarian efforts, which include the Martin Luther King, Jr. Legacy Award from Ferris State University; the Whitney Young, Jr. Service Award from the Boy Scouts of America; and the Mentor of the Year Award from Former Governor Jennifer Granholm, Dan Mulhern and the State of Michigan. He also received the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Incorporated Honor Award for his outstanding community service and activism in 2008.
As a socially and morally conscious soul who is passionate about social justice and civil rights, Rev. Richardson’s spiritual rhetoric, personal hermeneutics, ministerial philosophy and ministry praxis all exemplify caring for and meeting the needs of the least, the lost, and the left-out. Moreover, Rev. Richardson is a progressive advocate for civic engagement; as a result of his passion for building strong communities, Rev. Richardson makes it a priority to lend his time and talents to serving in both executive leadership and general capacities for organizations such as the Council of Baptist Pastors of Detroit and Vicinity, American Baptist Churches of Michigan, the American Red Cross, the Boy Scouts of America, and the Business Professionals of America. He is also a graduate of the FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigation) Citizen’s Academy. In addition to those responsibilities, Rev. Carnel serves as a member of Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan’s Clergy roundtable and the clergy roundtable for the Detroit Public Schools Community District. In October of 2018 Rev. Richardson had the privilege of being “principal for a day” at Pasteur Elementary School in Detroit, Michigan. In addition to these duties and responsibilities, Rev. Richardson now serves as a member of the Coalition for Black and Jewish Unity. In 2019, Rev. Carnel Richardson offered the opening prayer for the Michigan Democratic Party’s State Convention.
Each time Rev. Richardson has been asked to take on a challenging task he has committed to it with dignity, endurance, and excellence. His love for humanity is impeccable and his passion for God and community is undeniable.
