Welcome to all participants in New Plymouth’s 68th

Annual Festival of the Arts.

Once again the Festival will be held at the TSB Showplace, commencing Friday 7th July through to Thursday 13th July. This year Piano & Instrumental will be held at 4th Wall Theatre, Baring Terrace, from Friday 30th June through to Sunday 2nd July.

The syllabus and entry forms are available for downloading from our website

www.newplymouthcomps.com. There are three distinct entry forms, one for all Dance sections, one for Piano & Instrumental and one for Vocal/Speech & Drama. A separate entry form is required for each section you enter. Contact the convenor of your section who will be happy to help you if you have any queries about your entry. All contact details are in the syllabus and on the website.

Completed forms and cheques should be posted to the Treasurer, NP Performing Arts Competition Society, PO Box 218, New Plymouth 4340. This year payment can also be made by internet banking/direct credit into our account. Please see entry form for banking details.

All performers in the Competitions receive a written report from the adjudicator with constructive

feedback about their performance. Many prizes are on offer, in the form of cups, trophies, medals and

monetary awards generously gifted by current and past supporters of the creative arts. Prizes are listed within each section of the syllabus.

There is also the opportunity to be nominated to represent the New Plymouth Performing Arts

Competitions Society at this year’s PACANZ (Performing Arts Competitions Association of New Zealand) National Young Performer Awards held in Palmerston North 19-22 October 2017.

The awards currently operate on a two-year cycle, namely: October 2017 - Modern Dance, Acoustic instruments,Speech & Drama, Highland Dance, Troupes/Groups October 2018- Vocal, Tap Dancing, Ballet, Pianoforte, Troupes/Groups

Sponsorship. New Plymouth Performing Arts Competition Society (NPPACS) would not be able to run

these competitions without generous funding assistance for venue hire, adjudicator expenses, printing and promotion.

We also acknowledge the many prizes donated by community and business. These are listed in the syllabus and will again be listed in the programme. Thanks go to all the performers for sharing their talents with us. Festivals offer a wonderful platform to

express and develop your performance skills. We encourage friends and families to come and support

our performers and celebrate their achievements.

ADJUDICATOR PROFILES:

BALLET & MODERN DANCE: Abby Dutton, Hamilton, Graduate of the Apollo Theatre School 2010, Diploma of Musical Theatre, Junior & Intermediate Teaching (AJDA) ,National Certificate of Fitness, Exercise Consultancy, Personal Training Business Abby learnt Ballet, Jazz and Tap from age 5 at Valerie Lissette School of Dance in Hamilton. After completing year 13 at school, she spent 2 years under Sarah Boocock at the Apollo Theatre School to complete her full-time professional training in Musical Theatre and also carried out her teaching studies. In 2011, upon completion of her diploma, Abby received a short contract as Dance Educator for the Royal New Zealand Ballet Company for Tutu’s On Tour. She has since completed 2 more contracts, a second season of Tutu’s on Tour and Swan Lake in 2013. Following a month in Los Angeles to rehearse the onboard shows, she began a contract onboard Princess Cruises, Island Princess, shortly after finishing her RNZB tour. It was then that she absolutely fell in love with travelling, meeting new people and the challenge of life on the seas. In 2012 Abby spent 6 months in Mumbai, India as a dancer in Bollywood featuring in 13 different films, which was a very challenging and rewarding experience. In 2013, Abby danced for South African Dance Company ‘Afro Arimba’ on a world cruise onboard Costa Deliziosa, Costa Cruises. In 2014, she was offered an extended performer contract on the Caribbean, Sapphire and Diamond Princess’ completing her 20-month stint in October 2015. Abby has taught/educated, choreographed and adjudicated a great deal throughout her profressional dance career. She enjoys guest teaching and taking master classes and workshops over the country and in the past has involved herself in a number of corporate gigs, cheerleading, brand ambassador/promotional model work, tutoring and managing Arts On Show workshops, pageant work, mentoring on World Class Dance Tour (formally known as NZ Dance Networks), taking Dance Industry seminars and so on. Having discovered a passion for fitness in recent years, Abby has completed study in fitness, enjoying the relationship between dance and fitness and the ability to marry together her 2 passions. In early 2016 Abby was nominated, then earned her place as a finalist in the New Zealand Exercises Industry Awards as Up & Coming Personal Trainer of the Year. She is now a Personal Trainer at Les Mills, teaches Pilates, runs boot-camps and group fitness classes along side her dance work. 2016 also saw her begin her own business ‘Studio Glow’ which offers services in Dance, Fitness and Beauty. Abby would like to thank the competitions committee in New Plymouth for inviting her down to enjoy some lovely dancing and for looking after her throughout the festival! Best wishes to all competitors. Enjoy and dance your hearts out!

TAP DANCING: Shona Devoy, Tauranga

Shona has been involved with the competitive dance scene for nearly 50 years, having started learning and competing in tap dance as a 5 year old. She spent her formative years competing around New Zealand and completing her exams, and then as a 16 year old became a teacher in Whakatane and now in Tauranga. She teaches privately in her own studio, working with dancers especially on the stage performance and competition aspect of dance. She has had the pleasure of adjudicating many younger dancers along the way. Over the years she has seen a number of her pupils succeed overseas, some have gone on to be teachers, while others just remember the enjoyment of their dancing lifetime. She taught her two daughters, one of which is now a teacher and adjudicator in Manawatu and their love and appreciation of dance continues. Most of all her excitement comes from seeing the self esteem and confidence grow in anyone who learns to dance and perform, and then taking that on throughout their lives. She has a passion for dance, especially Tap.

More recently she has been involved with choreography for stage shows and group performances for various organisations, the most challenging being “The Producers” which included teaching adult men and women to tap dance to perform a number of the items in that show along with musical theatre and jazz numbers. She has a strong belief that dance should be seen and enjoyed by audiences and therefore supports the performance aspect of it strongly. While many musicals and shows have wonderfully strong lead singers, it is often the ability to sing, act and dance that creates stars. In New Zealand, we have an abundance of such talent and Shona believes that this competition will be no exception.

PIANO & INSTRUMENTAL: Ingrid Culliford, Wanganui

After many years studying and working in London as a free-lance flautist where she worked with several known orchestras and chamber ensembles and taught at Trinity College and the Royal Academy of Music Junior department, Ingrid Culliford returned to New Zealand in 1994. Since then, Ingrid has continued to perform widely. She has been a member of the Auckland based ensemble 175East since 1997, toured in Indonesia and for Chamber Music NZ with Tuhonohono (featuring the music of Dame Gillian Whitehead) and has performed with the Australian ensemble, Elision. She has worked as a casual extra with the NZSO and is a recording artist for Radio NZ. Ms Culliford continues to give recitals, masterclasses and concerto performances throughout New Zealand. In addition to her performance work, Ingrid is very involved with teaching. For a number of years she was tutor in flute at both Waikato University and the NZ School of Music in Wellington. She was also Head of Music at Nga Tawa School and is currently a Senior Examiner for the International Baccalureate as well as an examiner for the NZMEB (NZ Music Examinations Board). She is currently tutor in woodwind and piano at both Collegiate and Nga Tawa Schools. In August 2015 she was a recipient of the Marie Vandevart Award for outstanding service in fostering a love of chamber music.

VOCAL: Sally Baratt-Boyes, Wellington Sally holds a Bachelor of Music Degree in Singing Performance from Victoria University of Wellington and

has completed her Postgraduate Diploma in Music Teaching (PGDipMusTch) from the New Zealand

School of Music, graduating with Distinction. She has studied in London with David Harper and in Milan

with Maestro Vincenzo Manno. Recently, Sally completed Estill Voice Training Levels 1 and 2. She is a

former NEWZATS (New Zealand Association of Teachers of Singing) Council member.

Sally has worked as a musical director, choral soloist, and adjudicator and has performed roles in opera

and music theatre as well as being a backing singer for documentaries and short New Zealand films. She

has also enjoyed forays into the film acting world as an extra on movies such as King Kong and Avatar,

and two NZ television series, Bread and Roses, and Fallout.

Sally has taught singing privately, to both individuals and groups, for over 25 years. In 2015 one of her

students won a Trinity College Exhibition Award for Advanced Certificate in Singing. For nearly six years

Sally taught singing to the actors at Toi Whakaari: New Zealand Drama School where she emphasised the

importance of accessing the whole voice in order to tell the story of a song with naturalness and freedom.

After moving from Wellington to Auckland Sally is setting up a teaching studio on the North Shore and

Warkworth.

Speech & Drama: Claire Marsh, Morrinsville FTCL: (Speech & Drama) FSNZ: Public Speaking; Diploma Professional Speaking. Accredited Examiner: Speech New Zealand, Accredited Competitions Adjudicator: SCA, Accredited Theatre Adjudicator: ANZDA . Claire is a self- employed Speech and Drama and Public Speaking teacher. She is an Association Teacher at Holy Cross Catholic Seminary in Auckland and Voice Coach for PGG Wrightson Stock Auctioneers. She also provides Training Workshops for Businesses, including McConnell Dowell Construction Co, Auckland. Claire is passionate in all areas of theatre and takes every opportunity to attend plays. Last year she spent a month in London, where she saw a wide range of Shakespeare’s plays and also new plays including ‘Here We Go’ by Caryl Churchill, ‘Wonderland’ a new musical performed at the National theatre and ‘Teddy Ferrara’ by Christopher Shinn, performed at the Donmar theatre.

PROGRAMMES: Due to the size of the programme, it is necessary to have separate programmes, one for sections taking place in the Alexandra Room (Speech & Drama, Vocal), one for sections taking place in the Theatre Royal (Ballet, Modern Dance & Tap) and one for sections being held at the 4th Wall Theatre (Piano & Instrumental).

Programmes are printed to order. To be certain that you receive your programme for the appropriate section, please order with your entry as only a small number of extras will be printed. If you are entered for performances in all venues you will need to purchase 3 separate programmes.

ADMISSION TICKETS TO HALLS:

TICKETS:

All persons entering the theatre are required to purchase a ticket.

BACK STAGE AND DRESSING ROOMS:

All parents of competitors and all persons entering these areas will be required to have a session ticket or parent pass on them. Persons that do not have a ticket/pass will not be permitted into these areas.

Tickets allow entry into all halls for the purchased sessions

Teacher’s Concession Ticket - teachers with 10 or more competitors may apply to the Conveners for a concession ticket. This ticket is not transferable.

SPONSOR A CLASS:

Please indicate on entry form if you wish to sponsor a class. The cost is only $5.00 per complete

class. All sponsors’ names will be acknowledged in the programme.

COMPETE AT OWN RISK

All competitors participate in these competitions at their own risk.

GENERAL CONDITIONS

FESTIVAL: These Competitions are open to entrants whose income is not in excess of $2000 per

annum derived from the exercise of his or her talents in the section in which he or she may compete,

excluding Open Classes.

No Competitor who has been taught or coached by the Adjudicator of that section during the

two years preceding the Competitions Festival will be allowed to compete in that section.

OPEN CLASSES: Open to all competitors (either amateur or professional) irrespective of

earnings.

AGE: Piano & Instrumental will be at the commencement of their festival i.e. 30 June. All other sections as at the first day of Competitions i.e.7th July 2017. Winning Competitors must produce Birth Certificate if called upon to do so.

CLOSING DATE: The closing date for entries is Tuesday 11th April 2017. Please use the form provided in the syllabus or on the website. Please note that there are separate entry forms this year, one for all Dance Sections, one for Piano/ Instrumental and one for Vocal/ Speech & Drama.

ENTRY FEES: A. All Fees must accompany entries. B. Use a separate form for each competitor. C. Use a separate form for each section e.g. Ballet, Tap, Speech, Music D. Duos, Trios, Duets and Ensembles/ Groups are to be entered and paid for by one

performer only – Please include the names of all performers/ group name on the entry form where known.

E. Late entries will only be accepted if postmarked up to two days after the closing date

F. Please note that $1 of each entry fee is paid to the Performing Arts Competitions Association of New Zealand Inc (PACANZ).

CONDITIONS OF AWARDS AND PLACINGS:

Scholarships & Awards

Competitors must compete in all classes for which the Scholarship or Trophy is awarded. Trophy and Scholarship winners will be decided by highest aggregate marks. In the event of a tie the Scholarship or Trophy shall be shared. If a Class is split due to large entries and there is a trophy for that Class, then the trophy will be shared by both winners. (Ballet & Modern - refer to own section rules).

Where there are three or fewer competitors in a Scholarship, the awarding of a Scholarship will be based on the standard of performance. Candidates must be of sufficiently high standard in the opinion of the adjudicator whose decision shall be final. The NP Competition Society reserves the right to amend the advertised prize money.

Tap, Ballet & Modern Dancing

Medals for 1st, 2nd, 3rd, Ribbons for Very Highly Commended, Highly Commended and Commended may be awarded.

Speech and Drama, Piano and Instrumental, and Vocal

Certificates for 1st, 2nd, 3rd, Very Highly Commended, Highly Commended and Commended may be awarded.

ORDER OF PERFORMANCE: Competitor's names will appear in the programme in the order in

which they compete, but all competitors must be in attendance (backstage Theatre Royal or seated at the front of the Alexandra Room) at time of commencement of their class. Those not present when called upon shall be liable to forfeit their right to compete.

PROTESTS: Any person desiring to enter a protest must lodge the same in writing with the Secretary

together with a statement of the grounds on which it is based and enclosing $5.00. Should a protest on investigation be deemed to be frivolous or unfounded, the deposit will be forfeited. No protest will be entertained unless made within twelve hours after the Adjudicator's award is announced in that particular item. The decision of the Protest Committee (President, Vice President and Section Convener) shall be final.

ALL SECTIONS: In Duos and Trios/Ensembles no complete combination may compete more than

once in any particular class.

DANCING SECTIONS: In Duos any competitor may compete twice only per class with a different

partner/s. There is no restriction on the number of groups or trios a competitor may compete in.

TIME LIMITS:

Dancing Sections

A strict control of 3 minutes per item for under 12 years and 4 minutes per item for 12 years and over is to be enforced. Duos & Trios 4 minutes. Open Group Work - 6 minutes. Picture Story Class 653 and Tap Section Class 553 - 12minutes.

Music & Speech Sections

Refer to own Section Rules.

ITEMS MUST VARY:

General

Competitors will not be permitted to give the same item in more than one class. This does not apply to Restricted Classes or Championships. Competitors entering Jean White Memorial Scholarships, Gilbert-Smith Dance Trust Modern Awards or National Young Performer Award classes may use these dances in one other class.

Music Section

No competitor will be allowed to perform an item, for which he/she has previously won a first placing in the New Plymouth Competitions within the last 3years.

CLASSES: With an excessive number of entries, classes may be split at the discretion of the

convener. The convener reserves the right to delete any class or amalgamate classes if there are

insufficient entries. A refund will be given if the class is cancelled.

RESTRICTED CLASSES: Open to any person who has not won a First Place at any competitions

in any age group for the section in which they are competing at closing date of entries. However, if

you do win prior to the first day of competitions you will no longer be eligible for restricted classes

and your money will be refunded.

CHAMPIONSHIPS: Tap Dancing Section

To be eligible to enter “Championship” class, each competitor must have won a “Tap Solo” class. All competitors must dance in order as their name appears in the programme.

Ballet Championship

To be eligible to enter Ballet “Championship” class, each competitor must have won a First Place in Classical Ballet Solo.

Modern Jazz Championship

To be eligible to enter Modern Jazz “Championship” class, each competitor must have won a First Place in Modern Jazz Solo.

PROMPTING: No prompting or assistance of any kind may be rendered during a performance

except by the Adjudicator. Prompting of any kind may result in the disqualification of the competitor by the adjudicator.

REHEARSALS: Private rehearsals in any of the competition venues must be arranged by the parties

concerned with the venue authorities. Dancing rehearsals on stage during Festival Week only by appointment with the Convener.

CHALLENGE TROPHIES: Are the property of the Society and are held by the winners until returned to the Section Convener no later than 1 June 2017. Note - If trophies are unable to be delivered by hand then they MUST be couriered to the Convener’s address (see various sections in the syllabus for return address details). Posting is not accepted by the Society due to trophies going missing in the past. Late returns will result in a fine of $30.00 to defray expenses in tracing cups. Failing to comply with the above the competitor may jeopardise eligibility for awards & scholarships.

ENGRAVING OF TROPHIES AND CUPS: Payment thereof is the responsibility of the winner of the

Trophy or Cup.

OPEN CLASSES: To be adjudicated during evening sessions where possible.

FAILURE TO FINISH ITEM: If a Competitor leaves the stage for any reason during their item they

should recommence at the Backstage Manager's discretion. If the stage is left, the competitor will not be eligible for a First, Second or Third placing unless due to CD malfunction. Any competitor leaving the stage during a Championship will not be permitted to recommence unless due to CD

malfunction.

CONDUCT & OBLIGATIONS: Communication with the Adjudicators, either by Competitors,

Teachers or other interested parties, prior to, or during the Competitions is strictly prohibited, and

the Committee reserves the right to disqualify any Competitor who breaches this rule. Committee members and official helpers are permitted to speak to the Adjudicator on their official duties only.

SOUND SYSTEM: A Sound system will be provided in the Dancing Sections. All music will be played

through this system. CDs only – tapes can no longer be played through our system. One item per CD only.

RESULTS: Entry into these competitions constitutes your permission to publish results. Results will

be posted on the website.

GENERAL RESERVATIONS: The Committee reserves the right of determining the status of all

competitors, and of applying and interpreting these rules, and the decision of the Committee in all

matters shall be final.

ACCOMPANIST: Please refer to the Vocal and Piano & Instrumental sections.

OWN SELECTION: Own Selection unless otherwise stated.

The title of all items should be inserted on entry forms where possible.

The Speech adjudicator will take into consideration the suitability of the item with respect to the age and sex of the Performer.

Competitors in Pianoforte, Vocal, Speech and Drama classes giving Own Selection items must hand copies to the Steward at the door, no later than fifteen minutes before the commencement of the class. All copies must have the competitors’ name, class and number clearly marked. Copies must be collected at the completion of the session.

Time Limits to be adhered to in all sections unless otherwise indicated.

SCHOLARSHIPS: The Committee requests all scholarship winners to bank their cheques as

quickly as possible. Scholarship cheques not presented within six months will be forfeited.

REFUNDS: Entry fees are not refundable except in Restricted class rules.

NATIONAL YOUNG PERFORMER OF THE YEAR 2017

A sound system will be provided. All music must be played through this system. The Committee will not take responsibility for poor quality of CD’s not reading or jumping, however all care will be taken to ensure your music is of the best quality. One dance only per CD please.

TITLES: All titles for variations, barefoot, character, demi-character and musical theatre dances must

be included on entry form to be eligible.

2017 National Young Performer Award – Modern

The New Plymouth Performing Arts Competition Society will be selecting one nominee in the above category if the required standard is attained. (Note: if the NPPACS receives 6 or more entries for nomination the Society may select two nominees if the required standard is attained) The Nominee is responsible for paying part of the entry fee to the National Young Performer of the Year Award

Please state clearly on the entry form if you are seeking nomination for the National Young Performer Award. There is an additional cost to the New Plymouth Performing Arts Competition Society of $20.00 when entering this award and this amount must be included with your entry.

2017 Criteria for Modern

A. Performers shall be 15 and under 21 years as at 1st October 2017

B. Each performer shall compete in three classes during the preliminary round;

2. Contemporary

C. There shall be a maximum time limit of four minutes for each dance, taken from the

beginning to the conclusion of the music.

D. There will be a semi-final at which competitors will repeat either B.1 or B.2 at the discretion of

the adjudicator. Competitors will be chosen based on their marks in the Preliminary round(s).

The number of semi-finalists will be decided in accordance with the NYPA rules.

E. For the Final Award Concert six competitors will be recalled, and shall repeat the item not

performed at the semi-final.

F. Costumes, choreography & music should be appropriate to the age of the competitors and

suitable for a family audience.

NB. Nomination of competitors by Societies should be based on classes B1 and B2 i.e. without

the Master Class, but may include an impromptu class, at the discretion of the society.

NB: AT THE NATIONAL COMPETITION

Nominees in the Modern Dance section are required to include performance copies of

their music on CD when submitting their entry form, and a list of the titles and composer

and/or artists for each piece. It is the Competitors’ responsibility to ensure they abide by

NZ Copyright Law.

Society Nomination

Each Society, which is a financial member of PACANZ, may nominate up to two competitors, who

shall be selected by the adjudicator, based on Criteria stated in A, B1 and B2.

The adjudicator will determine that a competitor has displayed a sufficient standard of performance to

competently represent that society at the National Finals.

The standard required will be at the absolute discretion of the adjudicator but will include:

A demonstration of adequate preparation

An authority of performance

A performance with a level of maturity commensurate with a national final competition of this age

group.

If the adjudicator considers that sufficient standard has NOT been reached by any competitor, then

NO nomination will be made.

The Nominating Society is responsible for paying part of the entry fee to the National Young

Performer Awards, i.e. $75.00 incl gst.

The Nominee is responsible for paying their portion of the entry fee to the National Young Performer

Awards i.e. $175.00 inc gst.

NATIONAL YOUNG PERFORMER AWARDS 2017 CRITERIA FORTROUPES/GROUPS

A. Competitors may be of any age. Competitors may only compete in ONE nominated Troupe/Group for any particular Studio or Educational Institution. e.g. a Competitor may be in ONE Troupe for their Dance Studio and ONE Troupe for their High School or College.

B. Each Troupe/Group shall be nominated at a Member Society Competition by

performing in any dance genre pertinent to the Competition they enter. This competition is for amateur troupes/groups only and is not open to professionals. (A Professional is someone whose primary employment is being paid to perform or work in the performing arts. For the present purporses, being a student constitutes “primary employment” and therefore is not seen as a Professional. For the Student who receives payment for participation, either teaching or performing, this should not impose professional status on a person if it is by way only of an occasional bonus or benefit rather than their principal means of earning a livelihood. The exception to this is a participating teacher who may perform.)

C. There shall be a maximum time limit of five minutes, taken from the beginning to the

conclusion of the music. A penalty of 5 marks will be imposed if the time limit is exceeded by 10 seconds or more.

D. Troupes/Groups who gain nomination must be able to attend the National Young

Performer Competition which will be held in Palmerston North. Compulsory Registration/Orientation will be on the evening of Thursday 19th and the Competition will be on Friday 20th October 2017.

E. The winning Troupe/Group will be announced at the completion of Competition on the

Friday and it would be appreciated if the group were available to perform at the Final

Award Concert on Sunday night 22ndOctober 2017.

F. Costumes, choreography & music should be appropriate to the age of both the competitors and suitable for a family audience.

The adjudicator will determine that the Troupe/Group has displayed a sufficient standard of performance to competently represent that society at the National Troupe/Group Finals.

The standard required will be the absolute discretion of the adjudicator but will include:



A performance with a level of expertise commensurate with a national final competition.

If the adjudicator considers that sufficient standard has NOT been reached by any Troupe/Group, then NO nomination will be made.

The nominated Troupe/Group is responsible for paying the entry fee to the National Young Performer Awards, which is $250.00 incl gst.

The winning Troupe/Group will receive a Trophy and $1,000 for their Studio.

This scholarship has been established to assist students to enhance their classical dance education by attending an appropriate course of study of their own choice, (e.g. workshop, seminar) over and above their usual classes, subject to the approval of the Jean White Memorial Scholarship Society Committee.

Conditions of entry: 1. Candidates must be 12 years of age and over, but under 20 years and be of amateur status

6. There must be a minimum of three candidates and the scholarship will be awarded to the candidate showing the most promise.

7. The scholarship must be used within two years subsequent to being awarded. In the event of the successful candidate being unable to attend a course of study for any reason, she/he must advise the Committee and each case will be considered on its merits.

8. Award money will be paid to the course of study of the winner’s choice. 9. A candidate may win the scholarship twice but will then be ineligible to enter again. 10. Any protest will be dealt with by the Committee. 11. The Committee reserves the right to alter the Conditions of the Award if and when deemed

Copies of Music Items: Competitors must hand copies of music items to the Steward at the door, no later than fifteen minutes before the commencement of the class. All copies must have competitors’ name and class number clearly marked. Copies must be collected at the completion of the session.

Photocopied Music: According to the regulations regarding copyrights, competitors will NOT be permitted to perform from photocopied music. Players MUST perform from original music; however the adjudicator's copy may be a photocopy. Failure to comply with this may result in disqualification of competitors.

Repeats: All pieces should be played straight through without any repeats.

Time limit: A five minute limit will be enforced, except when otherwise stated. Open solo classes for

Piano/Bowed Strings/Woodwind have an eight minute time limit. Brass players see rules in Brass section. Ensemble items may be up to 9 minutes.

Accompanist: Competitors are responsible for arranging their own accompanist. Please contact the

convener by 15 May if you require assistance. Scholarships & Awards: Unless otherwise stated, awards & scholarships involving several classes will be awarded to the competitor with the highest aggregate marks in the relevant classes. Competitors who have entered all the required classes for an award will automatically be entered for that award.

Beginners Classes: Under two years of tuition (Piano and Woodwind) and under three years tuition (Bowed Strings) determined as at the first day of Competitions i.e. 30th June 2017

NATIONAL YOUNG PERFORMER AWARDS – 2017

CRITERIA FOR ACOUSTIC INSTRUMENTS

The New Plymouth Performing Arts Competition Society will be selecting one nominee in the above category if the required standard is attained. (Note: if the NPPACS receives 6 or more entries for nomination the Society may select two nominees if the required standard is attained) The Nominee is responsible for paying part of the entry fee to the National Young Performer of the Year Award.

Please state clearly on the entry form if you are seeking nomination for the National Young Performer Award. There is an additional cost to the New Plymouth Performing Arts Competition Society of $20.00 when entering this award and this amount must be included with your entry.

2017 CRITERIA FOR ACOUSTIC INSTRUMENTS

A. Performers shall be 15 and under 21 years as at 1st of October 2017.

B. This award is open to competitors on any (non-electric) acoustic instrument. (NB as PACANZ runs a separate pianoforte competition in the following year, pianoforte is not included under Acoustic instruments).

C. The programme should consist of three contrasting pieces from different periods of

musical history, i.e. Baroque, Classical, Romantic, 20th Century or Contemporary.

D. Each competitor shall perform a programme of 15-20 minutes duration. There will be a percentage mark for the complete programme. A penalty of 5 marks will be imposed if the time limit is preceded or exceeded by 30 seconds or more.

E. There will be a semi-final of up to six competitors who will repeat their full programme, as set out in B. and C. Competitors will be chosen based on their marks in the Preliminary round.

F. For the Final Award Concert three competitors will be recalled and will perform one pirce of the adjudicator’s choice from their original programme.

SOCIETY NOMINATION

Each Society which is a financial member of PACANZ may nominate up to two competitors, who shall be selected by the adjudicator, based on a performance as outlined in A-D (above). The adjudicator will determine that a competitor has displayed a sufficient standard of performance to competently represent the society at the National Finals. The standard required will be at the absolute discretion of the adjudicator but will include:



A performance with a level of maturity commensurate with a national final competition of this age group.

If the adjudicator considers that sufficient standard has NOT been reached by any competitor, then NO nomination will be made. The Nominating Society is responsible for paying part of the entry fee to the National Young Performer Awards, which is $75 incl GST. The Nominee is responsible for paying part of the entry fee to the National Young Performer Awards i.e. $175.00 incl gst. DIRECT ENTRY NOMINATION

If the adjudicator considers that more than two competitors have reached a sufficient standard, the adjudicator may report to the committee that those competitors should be given the option of a DIRECT ENTRY NOMINATION. The Direct Entry competitor will be responsible for paying the full entry fee i.e. $250 incl gst.

IMPROVISATION (Piano)

Notes to competitors:

The Adjudicator will supply music for these classes, which are open to all Piano competitors and will be programmed in the Piano Section.

Under 16 years

Improvisation will be based on a treble clef melody line of eight bars. Major, minor and 7th chord symbols will be indicated above the stave (e.g. F. C7 Gm etc). Keys will be major or minor to one sharp or flat. A basic accompaniment may be used and an introduction may be added.

Open

Improvisation will be based on a treble clef melody line of sixteen bars. Chord symbols will be indicated above the stave and the competitors will play the sixteen bars, adding an accompaniment, once through, as written. A repeat must then be played including improvisation and / or decoration. An introduction and ending should be added and the competitor must choose and provide a suitable accompaniment. Major and minor keys up to three sharps and three flats will be used and knowledge will be expected of relevant chords.

Where a player is competing in the National Brass Band Contest they shall conform with the rules of the Brass Bands Association of New Zealand (BBANZ) in relation to music and time limits for the current year. This applies where the contest is held within 4 weeks of the New Plymouth Performing Arts Competitions. Players may be asked for proof or entry to National Brass Band Championships.

NATIONAL YOUNG PERFORMER AWARDS

2017 CRITERIA FOR SPEECH AND DRAMA

A. Competitors shall be 15 and under 21 years as at 1st October 2017. B. Each competitor shall present a programme of 13 to 15 minutes duration of a contrasting nature,

marked out of 80.

1. One prepared prose of 3 to 4 minutes duration

2. One item of poetry 3. One characterisation 4. Each competitor shall introduce the programme and provide a linking

commentary. This should be in extempore style

5. The use of Props and/or Costumes is optional.

C. Each competitor shall give a two-minute Improvisation during the preliminary round. The

adjudicator shall select the topic. Thirty seconds of preparation time will be allowed. The Improvisation shall be marked out of 20 marks.

D. A penalty of five marks will be imposed if the minimum time limit is not met, or the maximum

time limit is exceeded by 30 seconds or more. E. There will be a semi final of up to eight competitors who will repeat their full programme as

stated in B. Semi-finalists will repeat their full programme, as set out in B. Competitors will be chosen based on marks in the Preliminary round(s)

F. For the Final Awards Concert three competitors will be recalled and shall repeat their

characterisation together with either their poetry or prose as chosen by the competitor.

SOCIETY NOMINATION Each Society, which is a financial member of PACANZ, may nominate up to two competitors, who shall be selected by the adjudicator, based on a performance as outlined in A-D (above). The adjudicator will determine that a competitor has displayed a sufficient standard of performance to competently represent that society at the National Finals.

The standard required will be at the absolute discretion of the adjudicator but will include;



A performance with a level of maturity commensurate with a national final competition of this age group.

If the adjudicator considers that sufficient standard has NOT been reached by any competitor, then NO nomination will be made. The Nominating Society is responsible for paying part of the entry fee to the National Young Performer Awards, which is $75.00 incl gst. The Nominee is responsible for paying their portion of the entry fee to the National Young Performer Awards, which is $175.00 incl gst.

DIRECT ENTRY NOMINATION If the adjudicator considers that more than two competitors have reached a sufficient standard, the adjudicator may report to the committee that those competitors should be given the option of a DIRECT ENTRY NOMINATION. The DIRECT ENTRY competitor will be responsible for paying the full entry fee, which is $250.00 incl gst.

I’m walking with my iguana When the temperature rises to above eighty-five, my iguana is looking like he’s coming alive. So we make it to the beach, my iguana and me, then his sits on my shoulder as we stroll by the sea . . . and I’m walking with my iguana I’m walking with my iguana Well if anyone sees us we’re a big surprise, my iguana and me on our daily exercise. till somebody phones the local police and says I have an alligator tired to a leash. When I’m walking with my iguana I’m walking With my iguana It’s the spines on his back That make him look grim, but he just loves to be tickled under his chin. And I know that my iguana is ready for bed when he puts on his pyjamas and lays down his sleepy head. Under 12 years – Class 12B THE CAR TRIP By Michael Rosen (Performance Poetry) Mum says: ‘Right, you two this is a very long car journey I want you two to be good I’m driving and I can’t drive properly If you two are going mad in the back. Do you understand? So we say, ‘OK, Mum, OK. Don’t worry.’ and off we go. And we start the Moaning: ‘Can I have a drink?’ ‘I want some crips.’ ‘Can I open my window?’ ‘He’s got my book.’ ‘Get off me.’ ‘Ow, that’s my ear!’ And Mum tries to be exciting: ‘Look out the window there’s a lamp post.’ And we go on with The Moaning: ‘Can I have a sweet?’ ‘He’s sitting on me’ ‘Don’t scratch.’ ‘You never tell him off.’ ‘Now he’s biting his nails.’ ‘I want a drink.’ ‘I want a drink.’

And Mum tries to be exciting again: ‘Look out the window There’s a tree.’ And we go on. ‘My hands are sticky.’ ‘He’s playing with the door-handle now.’ ‘I feel sick.’ ‘Your nose is all runny.’ ‘Don’t pull my hair.’ ‘He’s punching me, Mum That’s really dangerous, you know.’ ‘Mum, he’s spitting.’

And Mum says: ‘Right, I’m stopping the car. I AM STOPPING THE CAR.’ She stops the car. ‘Now, if you two don’t stop it I’m going to put you out the car And leave you by the side of the road.’ ‘He started it.’ ‘I didn’t. He started it.’

‘I don’t care who started it I can’t drive properly If you two go mad in the back. Do you understand?’ And we say: ‘OK Mum, OK, don’t worry.’ ‘Can I have a drink?’

If the ball was made of gold I could understand it the Lions are thrown to the Christians & God’s on our side a gust blows the Lions’ ball sideways it misses the swaggering goal posts and everyone cheers. What good sports we are! We beat our feet on the ground to defrost them. Give it to Hewson! Give it to the South Island! And where was Stu Wilson, that was the question. A mangled Lion writhes in agony GET HIM OFF! Some squirt beer from their pockets. Off-side! Some poor unhinged hoon hangs

When the bombs burst, he laughs, he shouts; When the guns go off, he roundabouts; When the limbs start to fly and the blood starts to flow Ho Ho Ho He sings the song of the Crow. The Crow is a sudden creature Thievish in every feature. Beware, beware of the Crow! When the sweating farmers sleep He levers the jewels from the heads of their sheep. Die in a ditch, your own will go, Ho Ho Ho While he sings the Song of the Crow.

The Crow is a subtle creature Cunning in every feature. Beware, beware of the Crow! When sick fold tremble on their cots He sucks their souls through the chimney pots, They’re dead and gone before they know, Ho Ho Ho And he sings the Song of the Crow. The crow is a lusty creature Gleeful in every feature. Beware, beware of the Crow! If he can’t get your liver, he’ll find an old rat Or highway hedgehog hammered flat, Any old rubbish to make him grow. Ho Ho Ho While he sings the Song of the Crow.

The Crow is a hardy creature Fire-proof in every feature. Beware, beward of the Crow! When Mankind’s blasted to Kingdom come The Crow will dance and hop and drum And into an old thigh-bone he’ll blow Ho Ho Ho Singing the Song of the Crow.

THE SHIRT Carol Ann Duffy Afterwards, I found him alone at the bar and asked him what went wrong. It’s the shirt, he said. When I pull it on it hangs on my back like a shroud, or a poisoned jerkin from Grimm seeping its curse onto my skin. the worst tattoo. I shower and shave before I shrug on the shirt, smell like a dream; but the shirt sours my scent with the sweat and stink of fear. It’s got my number. I poured him another shot. Speak on, my son. He did. I’ve wanted to sport the shirt since I was a kid, but now when I do it makes me sick, weak, paranoid.

All night above the team hotel, the moon is the ball in a penalty kick. Tens of thousands of fierce stars are booing me. A screech owl is the referee. The wind’s a crowd forty years long, bawling a filthy song about my Wag. It’s the bloody shirt! He starts to blub like a big girl’s blouse and I felt a fleeting pity. Don’t cry, I said, at the end of the day you’ll be back on 100K a week and playing for city.
