Another major milestone in the Ringwood Station Interchange and Upgrade project was achieved recently as the southern span of the new concourse was lifted into place and Platform 3 was given a complete overhaul.

Metro takes home four awards at ARA gala

We picked up four prestigious awards at the Australasian Rail Industry Awards, held at Sydney’s Four Seasons Hotel last night.

Hosted by the Australasian Railway Association (ARA), the awards recognise the outstanding achievements and innovations in the rail industry across a broad range of categories.

We won the Workforce Diversity Award for our Gender Diversity Program which seeks to boost the

number of females in trainee driver ranks.

ARA CEO, Phil Allan, said in 2009 the level of female participation in the train driving grade was stagnant at around 2.7 per cent, or just 16 females out of a total driver base of 570.

“Metro now has achieved its goal of a 50/50 gender split with 50.6 percent female trainee train drivers, representing an overall increase of 32 per cent over the last five years of operation,” he said.

We also won the TrackSAFE Award for our outstanding Trauma Management Framework.

AO Manager, Paul D’Alessio, won the Individual Award for his transformation of the AO role, the turnaround in LTIFR and driving fare evasion to a new record low.

Calvin Li won the Young Engineer Award for his outstanding contributions across the year.

In addition, Alex Pullman and Esther Warren were finalists in the Frank Franklyn Young Rail Specialist Award.

Authorised Officer Manager, Paul D’Alessio, receives the Individual Award for his transformation of the AO role, the turnaround of LTIFR and driving fare evasion to a new record low.

Rail Operations EA Update

The RTBU has successfully lodged a Protected Action Ballot Order Application (PABO) to the Fair Work Commission in relation to negotiations for the new Enterprise Agreement for Rail Operations. The Australian Electoral Commission will now organise a ballot for members of the RTBU to vote for, or against, protected industrial action. We believe the PABO and taking protected action is unnecessary, and we are disappointed the union has chosen this course of action so quickly after the expiration of the current Enterprise Agreement (EA) on 30 June. We maintain that we have been bargaining in good faith since the beginning of these negotiations. We will continue to make every effort to progress discussions and achieve a negotiated outcome as soon as possible. For more information, email [email protected]

The ever-popular Dumb Ways to Die (DWTD) characters have undergone a plush incarnation and are now available to purchase online.

The DWTD online store opened in June and the toy ‘safety champions’ are already proving to be a hit amongst die-hard fans of the award-winning safety campaign.

Numpty, Stumble, Loopy, Mishap, Dunce, Clod, Dumbkopf, Botch and Bonehead are available to purchase worldwide from www.dumbwaystodie.com

Meanwhile, we’ve just released an update on our second app, ‘Dumb Ways to Die 2: The Games’.

The update features a new land, ‘Adrenaland’, which has eight new mini-games including wing walking, an unsafe bungee, tsunami surfing and volcano climbing.

The updated app also allows players to challenge their Facebook friends in a new multiplayer battle mode.

Since it was launched in December last year, Dumbs Ways to Die 2: The Games, has been downloaded more than 55 million times. Most importantly, the campaign has generated almost 70 million pledges to ‘be safe around trains’.

Through the Dumb Ways to Die characters we've been able to connect with young people and ultimately help keep them safer by educating them about how to behave around trains.

This week we meet AO, Kelli Williams, a former teacher and member of our Community Education Unit... Did you go to University? If so, what did you study?

I went to Victoria University and did a degree in Arts, majoring in Psychology and Sociology. At the time I wanted to get into child and adolescent psychology. After the degree I wanted to keep my options open, so I applied for a Diploma of Education (Dip Ed) and 4th year Psychology. I was accepted into both and didn’t want to close any doors so I deferred the 4th year Psychology, did my Dip Ed in Melbourne, and then went to Sydney to do the 4th year. What was your first job after University?

I looked for teaching jobs in Melbourne. Whilst I had secondary education qualifications, I decided that I wanted to work in primary schools and managed to get a job thanks to some experience I had gained volunteering with kids. I had really good mentors at the school and learned more in a few weeks than I did during my teaching qualification. I was so happy to get that opportunity. How did you find your next opportunity?

After 4-5 years at the school, I was looking for a change. I heard about education officer roles that were at zoos, museums and other organisations but they were very competitive. I saw one advertised online for City West Water in their ‘Water - Learn it, Live it’ program and thought I’d have a crack at it. It was about teaching kids in schools about water conservation during the droughts we were having. Then it started to rain again so my contract ended. One thing it taught me was that I really

liked the idea of working for a company instead of a school. It provides the opportunity to move around different departments and roles. I also discovered how much I like a varied environment – a mix of teaching in a classroom and getting out and about. So I started relief teaching while decided my next steps. I spoke with a friend about it who had been an AO and she recommended that I check it out. So I jumped on Metro’s website, saw the AO position description and thought, ‘yeah, I can do that’. So here I am! I get to work with people of different ages, see different behaviours and work in different locations. It’s like a kinder surprise! You don’t know what you’re going to get. What other development opportunities have you sought out?

Whilst I was studying, I worked with kids who were in state care. I took them on camps and supervised visits with parents. It gave me leadership experience, taught me things about how I wanted to work, and gave me transferrable skills that I’ll be able to use forever.

At Metro, I was required to do a presentation through Metro Academy at the end of our training. I had just come back from Japan, and presented on the way their rail network markets the expected behaviours to its customers. Mario Stanisic was there and I had a conversation with him about my teaching experience. He told me about the Community Education group and I told him that’s where I would like to go in the future. So from there, where I could, I demonstrated my abilities to do that role and when a secondment opportunity came up in the Community Education

Career profile: Kelli Williams

Unit came up – I applied for it and got it. The three month secondment has become five months and I will happily stay as long as they’ll have me. What advice would you have for people who want to manage and develop their career?

Start by looking at what you like, know and enjoy – the desirables. Then look at the things you feel that you have to have at work – the non-negotiables (like you do in relationships!). Plan, network and articulate your goals. Wherever you can, demonstrate the skills you have for the future role that you want. Sometimes it may seem like there are no development opportunities, but they are there - you have to create them. I look at the vacancies that are available, what skill sets they ask for and what I would need to do to develop those skills. It doesn’t mean that I’m not happy where I am, it’s just about planning and preparing for the future. Seek opportunities that speak to your strengths, that get you out of your comfort zone and be ready for and accept change. Make work fun. Who doesn’t want to have fun?

With compliments… “I would like to commend your staff who helped me locate a missing laptop yesterday. I was traveling on the Glen Waverley line yesterday around 6pm and left my laptop bag behind when I alighted at Darling station. When I realised it was left behind I immediately contacted the staff at Darling station, who rang ahead to the East Malvern and Glen Waverley stations to look for it. I am very grateful to the calm staff member who so promptly dealt with the matter - the laptop was very important to me and I am very glad for its safe return.” Customer: Cheng Employee: Avril Bayer “Really pleased with the friendliness and respect now shown by ticket inspectors on the Upfield line!
