Computer Tutorials. By Alan Paul

Alan Paul, who is a member of Ashfield and Ravenshead U3As, has very kindly written an on-line tutorial on WORD 2010. http://u3asitec.org.uk/live/code/u3asite.php?site=389&page=14813 We thank Alan wholeheartedly for the time and effort he has put into this web-site, - have a look, it could be just what you are looking for.

Supporting Events

We urge you to support the events we put on – these are always good value for money, as we always aim to make no profit on any event. The committee put a lot of time and effort, selecting food and entertainment for these events, but will not continue to do so if the members don’t

support us. We have lots of tickets left for St Patrick’s evening, and would like all members to consider

buying tickets and come along to what should be a great evening.

Holocaust Memorial Day 2014 - Tree Planting Event

Ashfield District Council will be marking Holocaust Memorial Day 2014 with the planting of an Oak tree at Kingsway Park, Kirkby-in-Ashfield. In addition, a display and film will be available for viewing within the Kingsway Park Café. The tree planting will take place at 11:00am on January 27th and will be followed by light refreshments at Kingsway Park Café. I would be delighted if you can join us at this event which aims to remember the victims of the Holocaust and other genocides. Attendees should meet at the Park's Bandstand at 10.50am - please wear suitable footwear. Please invite friends if you wish – everyone is welcome Denis Hill ( Ashfield District Council)

Threads and Fibres

This active and enthusiastic group is due to start a new topic in February so if you have been thinking you might join this is time! We are having a workshop by Lynda Kinnard on Stick weaving. We will then continue with the topic for another two months to finish a project. The cost of the workshop is £7.50 plus £5 for the starter pack which Lynda provides. I have based the cost on 10 attending and clearly if we have more the cost will reduce. If you would like to come along please contact Lynne Jackson or Maxine Rose for more details. The group meets on the third Wednesday of the month. This will be the 19th February at 10 a.m. at the Ashwood centre.

We now have about 20 people on the books, with an average attendance of 14 at our monthly sessions. The December meeting was almost entirely devoted to members’ choice, slightly seasonal, there was also a short and fiendishly easy musical quiz. This year we plan to concentrate each session on composers from a specific country, mostly European of course, though the North and South American continents will be represented. Every few months the selection is made up completely of members’ discs. We hold our two-hour sessions in the large meeting room at the Ashwood Centre and are pleased to see new members at any time. You don’t have to be a ‘regular’ member - if the outline above appeals to you, just come along and give it a try. You’ll be welcome.

Christmas Party

I’m sure everyone thoroughly enjoyed the Christmas Party. It was so well organised, and the meal was lovely. I don’t think anyone who wished to come was unable to buy a ticket. The entertainment went down very well too. Many thanks to Pam, Sue and the team for making this a memorable party.

Jill Pullan

New Year’s Eve Ceilidh

Knitter’s Jig entertained everyone with their excellent ceilidh/folk music. Almost everyone was up and dancing, and the night just flew by. The caller was really good, and most were able to follow the dances, - any mistakes were greeted by much hilarity! There were modelling balloons on each table, and some fantastic creations were produced, Many thanks to Julia and Carole for organising this great evening.

Jill Pullan

Craft Fair

The craft fair held in October was very successful and raised a total of £526 for the Hospice fund. This included £50 donated by our speaker in lieu of a fee. Many of the contributions – notably the cards and home produce were given entirely by the donators, who wanted no return for their efforts. Many thanks to all contributors. We have received a letter from the Hospice offering their grateful thanks.

Gardening Groups

Horticulture Forum

Horticulture forum is a group for active and enthusiastic gardeners.

Our meetings are planned so that each member of the group researches an area

of horticulture in which they are interested and talks about it to the rest of the

group.

This means we all extend our knowledge as well as talking about current

developments in our gardens.

Last year we undertook trials of seeds and tomato plants and so far this year

plan to look at a range of different potatoes as well as planning to grow some

more difficult seeds to share

We have a few spaces and will start again on the fourth Monday of February.

If you think you might be interested in joining the group please contact

Lynne Jackson 01623 750466

Talk with Taylor’s Clematis

Chris Blakelock has organised a talk by the nursery “Taylor’s Clematis” in

conjunction with the Gardening group, - 5th

February, 10.00am.

Friendly Gardeners - leader Marjorie Woolham

At this present time the group is full, but we welcome anyone to put their name down on the reserve list provided.

Garden Visits Group – leader Pam Sapey Please note that the times given are START times for visits. You need to arrive Approx 15 minutes earlier

so we are all together or to be updated on final arrangements.

No Refunds Policy Your committee have reluctantly decided that when tickets are ordered they must be paid for, unless advised differently, and if you find you cannot attend the event you have bought the ticket for, it is up to you to sell that ticket on, and no refund will be given by U3A, unless there is a waiting list in operation. This is because some events have run at a loss due to people suddenly cancelling and expecting their money to be refunded. After all, if you book seats at the theatre, or a bus trip and found you couldn’t attend, you would lose your money, and, regrettably, we must have a similar policy.

James Mitchell from the above organisation has recently been put in charge of a new project involving the senior reds. They are running an over 50’s social event every month at the city ground to give people the match-day experience. Each person in attendance will receive refreshments and a programme from a previous match to take home; in addition to this, there will be a previous week’s game played on the big screen. Professional coaches will also be running activities and skill games. In further months they hope to run ground tours and invite special guests such as former players and staff to give an insight on the roles within the club. The cost per person will be just £3.00 with the event running from 10am – 12noon. Contact James Mitchell – [email protected] for further information

What a bargin! Ed.

Your U3A Committee We are particularly short of volunteers for the tea/coffee duty roster, please put your name down for this, even it is only for one meeting during the year Please also consider giving any help with e.g. the Book Stall, refreshments; or making new members feel welcome. Also, please offer to help with the catering at the many events we organise. We always need a few ‘extra hands’ to help at events and meetings. Please consider helping your committee in any of the above capacities.

The Wood Carving Group dates have been changed to Thursday Evenings for the next Three months and possibly longer, also the time has been altered: it is now 5.30 till 8.30pm.

Hucknall / Ashfield Short Walks Group On Thursday 21 November, 23 members of the Short Walks group arrived at the Plough Inn at Farnsfield for the start of a gentle walk of nearly four miles. It was a lovely crisp morning with blue skies and sunshine. The walk took us through the village of Farnsfield along a track which led to the Southwell Trail, formerly the railway line. We walked along hedge-sides until we reached Lower Hexgreave Farm and then onto the parkland of Hexgreave. Leaders Mike and Shirley Dawe were expecting to see the highlight of the walk – the herd of red deer, but they had been moved to another area. Mike gave a potted history of Hexgreave estate which can be traced back to 1240. The hall itself was built between 1750 and 1760 and has been home to many famous people including more recently the late Sir John Eastwood. We then walked through the estate following a beautiful avenue of lime trees, and passing the entrance and outbuildings of Hexgreave Hall. And then we saw the herd of red deer – an awesome sight! We continued along roads until we reached Farnsfield, and the welcoming sight of the pub. 20 people stayed for a very enjoyable meal in a beautiful festively decorated dining room. Thanks were expressed to Jim and Cindy Bentley who have been coordinators of this group for many years and are now retiring.

Pam Sapey on 01623 558700

No Refunds Policy Your committee have reluctantly decided that when tickets are ordered they must be paid for, unless advised differently, and if you find you cannot attend the event you have bought the ticket for, it is up to you to sell that ticket on, and no refund will be given by U3A, unless there is a waiting list in operation. This is because some events have run at a loss due to people suddenly cancelling and expecting their money to be refunded. After all, if you book seats at the theatre, or a bus trip and found you couldn’t attend, you would lose your money, and, regrettably, we must have a similar policy.
