First Since 1997

TE Vance McDonald notched 3 recepts. for 84 yds. and 1 TD. His 65-yd. TD recept. marked his second TD of 65 yds.-or-more this season [75-yd. TD recept. at Car. (9/18/16)]. San Francisco 49ers vs. New Orleans Saints Just your initial thought on the defensive problems throughout this game? “When you’re playing against a team like that and a quarterback that’s that special just way too many big plays. You get them into situations where you feel comfortable - it’s third-and-long and then all of a sudden [New Orleans Saints QB] Drew [Brees] just keeps hitting those back shoulder throws where our guys are there but then don’t make a play on the ball. It’s unfortunate when you’re playing against somebody as talented as him, really, truly a Hall of Fame quarterback you’ve got to make plays and we didn’t. The story of the game was he had too many ‘ex’ [explosive] plays on the defensive side of the ball and three times we had an opportunity down in the red zone and we came away with zero points. We fumbled on the one. We fumbled on the 10. Then we have a fourth-and-one that we don’t convert, so against a good team like that you can’t do that. Both sides of the ball contributed to it.” QB Colin Kaepernick seemed to have a little bit of an up and down day. He was inaccurate from the pocket, but did some good things as well. How do you assess how he did today? “Probably the same way you just said, an up and down day. I thought there were some throws in the pocket that if we could’ve completed them then we’d have stayed on the field and kept some drives alive. But, I also thought he did some really good things, fit some balls in there. A couple of balls to [TE] Vance McDonald were big plays to us. Tried to take advantage of some of the things he did, but again I think the story for us offensively, we fumbled on the one, we fumbled on the 10, and then we didn’t convert on a fourth-and-one. That’s three series where we’re down in the red zone and we come away with zero points when you lose the game by 19.” What do you think of RB DuJuan Harris’s day? “Same thing, I think there’s some things DuJuan does really well for us, but I think right now we have an issue with our running backs holding onto the football. So, we have to do a better job of that because we’re not good enough on the defensive side of the ball to turn the ball over like that.” CB JaCorey Shepherd had a nice day for you too. “Yeah, he did. DuJuan had been back there for us, but with [RB] Carlos [Hyde] down and DuJuan getting a little bit more of the bulk of the carries on the offensive side of the ball, it was good to have a second returner step up and I thought he did a real nice job in his first action. He was really good in college, but I don’t think he’s returned a kick in the NFL and today was really kind of his baptism. But, what you want in a guy like that is a guy someone that’s going to hit it up in there and trust the blocking scheme. Not a guy who’s going to dance and I thought he was a threat back there. At least that was one positive from the special teams aspect that we can build on.” There’s a play at the end of the first half, eight seconds left and the Saints had a shot at the end zone. All three of your defensive backs essentially held and tackled the Saints receivers. Is that a scenario that you guys have gone over in the past? “We practice all sorts of scenarios at the end of the first half and the end of the game. So, we got flagged for a penalty there, which is a five-yard penalty and then they kicked a field goal. They were in field goal range.” My point is it seemed to work out. They had no chance of scoring obviously and they were forced to kick the field goal. Has that kind of crossed your mind that’s what we should do in that specific scenario? “There’s a lot of things that we practice in practice that cross our minds.”

With Colin’s inconsistency, when he goes through his stretches where he seems to be inaccurate, is that just him losing his technique? Is it concentration? How would you assess--? “I’d have to look at the specifics of it. But, when you get into a game like that when you’re down the way that we were down, all of a sudden it turned into more throw game. So, obviously there’s going to be more opportunities. I don’t know how many attempts he had, but you get into that. When we get into a rhythm and we’re moving the ball both run and pass, I think we’re better on the offensive side of the ball. Obviously, when you’re playing from behind like we were, we did have that one stretch where we went three-and-out real quick and just weren’t real comfortable back there and those are things we need to continue to work on with him.” Was defensive coordinator Jim O’Neil in the coaches booth today? “Yes, he was.” What went into that decision? “Jimmy said he wanted to be upstairs and I said, ‘Okay” Are you going to consider making changes to your defensive staff this week? “On who goes up stairs?” No, to your coaching staff? “No. No.” Have you thought of DL Arik Armstead having the shoulder surgery? “I don’t have the information in terms of what happened to him today. I know he was out and he was done. During the course of the game all they tell me is he’s out and he could come back or he’s out for the game. I was just told he was out for the game, so I haven’t had a chance to talk to the doctors.” Was there any thought of having him take care of--? “Again, I haven’t had any conversations about anything about his injury today. I don’t know what the injury was today.” Just to have it taken care of for the season, because he’s been in and out. “Again, I don’t know what the injury was today, so there hasn’t been any conversations about anything like that. So, I’m sorry. I’ll get that information for you. Hopefully I get it for you tomorrow.” How much of the struggles on defense are Jim O’Neil’s fault? Is this team getting outcoached on defense? “No, I think it’s everybody’s fault on the defensive side. I think we need to do a better job of putting our players in position to make plays and that’s everybody. So, that’s all of us. That’s me. It starts with the head coach. So, I don’t blame one single person for it.” Do you plan on making any personnel changes, specifically upfront in your front seven because this defense ranks dead last against the run? “I don’t know. We’ve got to look at who’s injured and who’s available and all those other things. To say, ‘Hey, we’re going to make a switch now,’ you’ve got to know who’s available and take a look at where we are, but we have rotated guys. We were fortunate, we felt like, to get [DL Glenn Dorsey] Dorse back today. We have rotated guys through our defensive line. There’s not a lot of options at the inside linebacker spot. We lost [LB] Ray-Ray [Armstrong] for the year. We lost [LB] NaVarro [Bowman] for the year. Aaron Lynch was unavailable today. So, a lot of the decisions that are made in terms of what personnel play on the defensive side of the ball is really what’s available to us right now. And, I think everybody that dressed played, so [LB] Tank [Carradine] rotated in with [LB Ahmad Brooks] Brooksie

and [LB] Eli [Harold] at outside linebacker. [LB] Mike Wilhoite was in there at inside linebacker. We rotated the D-Line, [[DT] Tony Jerod-Eddie played today. [DL] Ronald Blair played today. So, I think it’s not like guys aren’t playing defensively for us. If you’re up, you’re playing. I think just with the amount of plays we’re facing they are all getting opportunities out there to show us what they can do.” At 41-23, it was obviously a three-score game and you went for it on fourth down. Why didn’t you opt for the field goal and make it a two scores? “We felt like we needed a touchdown there. I didn’t think a field goal against Drew and what they were doing to us defensively was going to really make a dent into anything. So, thought we had to go for it at that point in time.”

Did you feel offensively, things got into more of rhythm than what you’ve had the previous two games? “Yes. We definitely got into more of a rhythm today. We still left a lot out there, particularly in the red zone. We went down there three times, came away with zero points.” Head coach Chip Kelly has talked about how that it was so long between starts for you, that you just needed to get as many reps as possible to start seeing things a little better. Are you feeling that? Is that coming around for you? “Yeah. I think for me, I get more and more comfortable every week. It’s something that, this is my first real opportunity getting live reps. So, being a few games in now, everything’s more and more clear, more and more comfortable and able to into a rhythm with this offense.” RB DuJuan Harris had a couple nice plays, the 47-yard touchdown. How do you think he played today? “He’s a great player. Like you said, had a few great plays today. He plays hard and that’s ultimately what you want from players. The willingness to go out and give everything they have every play and be willing to make plays and that’s what you get out of him.” You seemed to look at WR Quinton Patton a lot today. He had, I think, 106 receiving yards. Is that something that you thought might be available heading into the game were passes his way? “I think it’s something that the defense really dictated. The coverages, the play calls, all of those things go into who gets the ball and when and he did a great job when the ball did come his way of making plays.” There was a point in the third quarter where you struggled, went 0-for-7 at one point and really struggled. What was the problem there with the inconsistency? “We just had to get back into rhythm. Everything’s not going to be perfect the whole way through the game. It something that we got a little bit off track at that point. But, we got back on track, tried to get back into a flow so we could get back into the game.” How do you personally deal with the frustration that can come with a seven game losing streak? How do you balance that? “You have to keep working and keep trying to be better every week because complaining about it, worrying about it, all of those things are going to help you correct it. And ultimately that’s what we have

to do is correct things offensively, defensively, special teams. As a team, we have to correct our mistakes so we can start winning football games.” Do you think this team is moving in the right direction? “I think today was a step in the right direction. We had a lot of opportunities out there where a few different plays here and there, it’s a different ballgame. Those are things that moving forward we have to correct. Those are the corrections we have to make that make a difference whether you win or lose football games.” Which of those plays, Colin, will you go home tonight thinking about the most, those plays that you’re talking about? “For me, I always look at what I could have done personally. A few passes here and there, I wish I would have had. The interception in particular, I thought I could beat the guy with the throw and saw him the whole way. Those are things that I look at, what can I correct? What can I be better at to help this team win?” Were you guys trying to attack the right side of the field a little bit? It seemed like you had a little bit of success to that side or was that more just like the plays were dictating it? “Yeah. Plays and coverage dictate where the ball’s going on a lot of those things.” There were a lot of military members in the stadium, on the field. Did any of them approach you? Talk to you? Did you have any exchanges with them today? “Yeah. I talked to a few of them before the game when I was leaving the field.” What was the tenor of the conversations? “Just they appreciate what I’m doing. The few that I talked to supported it and were happy that I was doing it and thought that it was much needed.”

We put such emphasis on it and we work our tails off week in and week out in practice. The game plan gets simpler and simpler, but the ball doesn’t bounce our way. It’s unexplainable. It sucks. You’ve got to swallow it and go onto the next week.” Do you feel like you’re being put in a position to succeed? “Oh yeah. We’re pros, this is our job. I feel like no matter what’s called, you should execute it. It all falls back to technique, reading your keys and doing all of the little things that made you successful up to this point. Like I’ve said since Day 1, I love [San Francisco 49ers offensive coordinator Jim O’Neil] J.O. I love his scheme and I still feel that way. I truly and honestly believe that it’s not the scheme.” What are the breakdowns up front? People being in the wrong place at the wrong time? “Yeah, I feel like that’s the main issue. Like I said, being a tad bit too fast or a tad bit too slow. That’s been our issue.” How do you correct that issue? “Take your coaching and trust what you see. It all goes back to technique.”

It felt real good, we just didn’t score enough.” What was working for you in the passing game today? “We just stuck to our fundamentals. We have to tighten up on some things and as usual get back to the film and fix our mistakes and not shoot ourselves in the foot. It is tough to win a game against a future yellow coat in Drew Brees. We just have to fix our mistakes and stop shooting ourselves in the foot.” Do you ever feel like no matter what you do that it is just not enough, because of how potent their offense is and what they can do? “No. We could have won that game. Anybody outside of our locker room believe we could have lost, then oh well. I don’t care what people think. In this locker room we know that we could have won that game. I look at that like it was a good thing that happened on that play. “Sure, you can look at that and, like you were saying, make it stand for what it is and that is that guys are not giving up. We have a little back and forth because he did the same thing against the Carolina Panthers. He always says, ‘I got your back. You will outrun everyone except for me and I will block for you.’ It was good and I thought that we had a lot of energy today. I just had this game on my mind. Next week I have AZ on my mind and after that I don’t know who we play. It is just game by game and whatever happens, happens.” What do you think was open for you today? “I have to watch the film and see. We were able to move the ball, but then when we got down into the red zone, which has been a strength for us, having long drives and being able to convert touchdowns out of those drives, we weren’t able to convert today. You’re not going to win football games playing like that.” San Francisco 49ers RB DuJuan Harris did well running and also receiving out of the backfield. How did you see him spark this offense? What did he bring in this game? “He’s always been really good out of the backfield as far as catching the ball. He was able to pop a couple of big runs there. He was staying patient with the power game. I thought he was doing a good job in there for us. We can talk about all the positives we were able to do, but we still lost the game by multiple touchdowns. It’s not something we can hang our hat on.” Would it be accurate to say there’s a little bit of continuity developing on the offensive line? There have been some new faces in there with a rookie and a lot of change, but it feels like maybe there’s some continuity happening there? “I think we challenged the guys up front. We kind of challenged the young guys [49ers T] Trent [Brown] and [49ers G] Josh [Garnett] to really step up this week. We had a big test over there with 94 [Saints DE Cameron Jordan]. I think he’s all around probably the best defensive end player in the NFL as far as run and pass. I think they did a pretty good job against him. He’s a handful. I did not do a good job against him. I think they did a good job against him. They stepped up, they played well. I think overall we improved a little bit, but we’ve got to finish the drives in the red zone.”

San Francisco 49ers vs. New Orleans Saints Opening comments: “It was a good win. There were a lot of things that I’m sure when we watch the film we’ll have to clean up. But I thought, you know, we kind of hung in there when they came back the second quarter, third quarter and then, you know, we’re able to make enough plays in the end both defensively and offensively. We struggled a little bit in the kicking game and yet that’s a result of a lot of the guys that are playing a lot more downs on defense than special teams. So, we’ve got to be better at finding guys that can fill in, and that’s something or else that’s going to get us beat in a bigger game.” Was it good to see New Orleans Saints RB Mark Ingram bounce back? “It was fantastic. You know it was, he did a really good job. Guys up front played real well. Yeah, it was good to see him, especially early on. That was, I think, the first play of the drive. And you know, I’m sure when we watch it there are a lot of things well on that play.” How important was it to win a game decisively and you know, not come down to the last second? “Yeah, we don’t go into the game saying we need to win a game decisively. So, and for a good portion of that game it wasn’t decisively, but it was good to finish a game, and I think that would be a better way to phrase it.” I saw you talk to New Orleans Saints WR Michael Thomas after his second touchdown catch. What have you thought of what he’s done and that catch? “He’s doing well. Yeah, it was a good play by him. [New Orleans Saints QB] Drew [Brees] gave him a chance to make a play on the ball and you know, he just keeps impressing and he’s very conscientious. Those guys, all of them, those guys all are very competitive and want opportunities and we were able to make enough of them.” How do you think New Orleans Saints CB Delvin Breaux looked? Are you guys managing him a little bit? “Yeah, he had a series where he came out, a series and a half, which based on his snap count it was part of the plan, and same thing with [New Orleans Saints DT] Sheldon [Rankins]. San Francisco 49ers vs. New Orleans Saints How important do you feel like it was for you and for the team to win in a resounding fashion after a lot of the wins have been nail biters? “It felt good to finally get into a four minute drive and run the ball the way we did really all day long, to secure the victory that way and go to a knee. It’s always nice to expect that it’s going to go down to the wire, you expect you’ll have to make plays at the end of the game and win. I mean, really throughout the whole game, you look at both sides of the ball with the defense coming up with some big turnovers and our ability to sustain drives to really control the game. I felt like up front and run the ball very effectively with both [New Orleans Saints RB] Mark [Ingram] and [New Orleans Saints RB] Tim [Hightower] and making some plays in the passing game as well. It was a well-rounded win.” This is four out of five now. Are you getting the sense this team feels what it can be?

“Yeah, we do. Each week we get much better and it’s not you see the product on game day but it starts with our week of preparation. It starts with our week of proactive habits, how we prepare ourselves throughout the week, just the dynamics amongst the team as well. Anytime you have a new team, a young team, you have to find your way around a little bit early on and really learn how to win and be a pro. It’s just a process. I feel like we’ve got great veteran leadership on the team, but you’ve got some new faces. As you just pull it all together throughout the season, I feel like our best is yet to come. I feel like we’re starting to really find somethings that we’re really good at and really understand how to win. At the same time, I feel like there’s more. There’s more that we can accomplish and we can continue to become more efficient with certain things so we’re certainly not satisfied.” You’ve been with Mark Ingram since he was a rookie. Talk about what was gratifying for you with him today. “Listen, I know this about Mark; he’s a competitor and whenever he’s challenged he’s going to step up to the challenge. He certainly stepped up today in a big way. I love his makeup. Tim Hightower, too. Talk about the best teammates you could ever ask for when it comes to their work preparation, their mindset, and their attitude, and how they are on game day. Certainly their productivity. That was a tough situation last week where Mark gets taken out and Tim comes in and plays fantastic. Today, we obviously needed both of them. Mark came up with some huge runs. Obviously none bigger than that 75-yard run on that one play on the first drive during the second quarter. So, listen, I can’t say enough about Mark and the way that he responded after last week. Especially what he’s meant to us after the last few years. He’s been such a mainstay and he’s been really productive and really tough. I’ve watched him evolve as a running back and he’s always been a very natural runner, but what he does in the passing game, what he does in the protections, the kind of guy he is, there’s not a guy on the team that doesn’t love Mark Ingram. He’s the life of the party for us too. At practice, in the locker room, just keeping it light. He’s a great teammate all the way around.” New Orleans Saints WR Michael Thomas amazed us with his touchdown. What did you see on the play? “That was one where you just throw it up to the big man and let him make the play. He sure did, didn’t he? The ball’s juggling and going around and he was able to snatch it before he hit that ground hard and held onto it. He continues to grow and develop each and every week. That whole unit is really something else, that whole receiver unit.” Tim Hightower told us the first thing he did was go over and tell Mark Ingram how proud he is of him. What does that say about the dynamic of those two guys regardless of their touches? “I would say this; they motivate one another. There’s a drive, they’re happy for the other guy as they are for anybody when something good happens. They’re there for each other. I think they understand the big picture too, like man, we need both of you guys. There’s some days where maybe it’ll be Tim’s day last week and some days where it’ll be Mark’s day. At the end of the day you need both these guys. They both contribute so much, but it takes a special mindset and personality for that. I can’t say all running backs would be that way, but those guys are solid. They’re special.” You’ve been a consistently elite quarterback in this league. What drives you and continues to drive you? “I want to win. I want to win a championship. I want to see this team come together and do something special. We’re just going to take it one step at a time here. We’ve won four out of five and I think we’ve really grown over the last five weeks. I’m just excited about the second half of the season. Here we are halfway through at 4-4 and I feel like our best has yet to come. We’ve got some momentum now. The schedule doesn’t get any easier. With repetition you build that trust and we’re building it. I think with each guy you’ve got a great skill set with the wide receiving corps and you try to spread the ball around to get those guys in position to succeed. I love looking at the sheet at the end of the game and each guy’s got seven catches, six catches, five catches. It just so happened that Michael Thomas had two touchdowns today but in the past it’s been [New Orleans Saints WR Brandin] Cooks, it’s been [New Orleans Saints WR Willie] Snead, but that’s the way our offense works. You never know whose day it’s going to be but you give them opportunities.” Former NFL running back Marcus Allen had a chance to talk to the team last night. What was your biggest take-away from that and what was the message coming into today's game? "Yeah, I've known Marcus for a long time, ever since I was a young player in this league. You know, I've been around it enough to know first of all, he's one of the greatest players to play the game in a running back position. He played longer than I think any running back's ever played at 16 years. So, it was funny he was talking about that and he actually asked me, ‘You know, who's the oldest guy in the room?’ last night. I got to raise my hand and say 16 years, so that kind of matches him at this point. But he had great words for us, great words. One of it was just talking about being a pro and how to conduct yourself and you know, what this game is all about. The relationships and the opportunity to win and we do it for each other and there was a lot of really great messages. I mean he's one of the best who ever played and you know, it was solid gold last night everything he had to say. It was awesome." Did San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick look a little more like the Kaepernick you remember maybe from previous--? "He seemed to play really well today. You know, it's hard to keep up with the other side of the ball, but obviously they moved the ball at times, really well today. And obviously, he ended up with a ton of passing yards. Yeah they, we figured coming off the bye week they'd be rested and reenergized and ready to roll, which they were. But, I thought our defense did a pretty good job getting some pretty critical turnovers. You know, some good times for us offensively being able to cash in on those, it was good."

How tough was that first half though? You guys gave up 20 points, and San Francisco had around six plays of 20-plus yards. “It was very tough. We kept going to the sideline and trying to figure out what the problem was. It was just a little miscommunication. That happens during a game. Just to have those big plays can hurt us, so I’m just glad we finished it out and kept them to three points in the second half. I’m glad we closed out and made that adjustment.” Was there a specific adjustment that you made? “Just talking. Communication. Guys just have to talk to each other.”

How was it being out there coming off of the Injured Reserve List? “In practice, obviously you’re going through your motions full speed, but nothing’s really physical or banging. With a game like today, how good can this team be? “We can be as good as we put the effort in to be. We’re not a perfect team, but we’re coming together. Sometimes that’s what makes a good team. It’s being a team that in November finds a way to come together and starts stringing wins together to the point that, before you know it, you’re in the chase. The confidence, more than anything, will pay the most dividends for us coming back from the rough start.” Is it good to put a team away and not be in a back-and-forth game? “We’ve talked the last few weeks about what kind of effects does having a win in a close game do. You can start gaining confidence in those situations. That’s what we talked about. Our defense gets backed up and comes up with a huge turnover to take a game that was getting close to a one-score game, and you make a big play to get the ball back and move it in the fourth quarter. What you see is a team starting to find ways to win. Those ways are different every week. Our defense came up with a bunch of turnovers and we were able to finish in the fourth.”

How nice was it to get a resounding win where you’re not biting your nails in the fourth quarter? “I think what’s positive is we made plays before it was do-or-die. Good teams don’t let themselves get backed into those positions. We’re not there yet, but we’re growing. I agree, the same way we talked about the confidence is built when you win things close, I think there was a lot of chatter on the sidelines in the fourth quarter of ‘Let’s put this away and finish this game.’”

What about this team battling back to 4-4 after a rough start? “It’s good. What I like about this team is we’ve done that (battling back) before, and sometimes it is exhausting. I think this team is getting more energy. That’s not always the case. Sometimes you feel a collective mental and physical toughness. We had a practice on Wednesday that wasn’t our best, and the practice on Thursday was as good as we’ve had all year. The practice on Friday was as good as we’ve had all year. You see a team learning how we have to prepare to win. So yes, getting back to 4-4 is good, but I think that the position the team is in right now is even more important than that.”

Walk us through the play. How were you able to come down with that? “I just had to rise up to the moment, respond. I felt like I had kind of went up lazy for one ball in a crucial third down going the other way. So, whenever I got my chance, whenever my play was called I was going to make a play no matter how I did. I just had to respond.” How do you think that ranks in catches you’ve made? “I’ll let you guys decide that.” It looked like you were talking to New Orleans Saints Head Coach Sean Peyton after the play, what were you guys talking about? “Which play?”

That touchdown. “I told him bet back really because [I] was kind of frustrated after that third down I couldn’t help my team, keep them on the field. I went up lazy and the defense kind of didn’t know what they were in and I kind of didn’t know I was going to run the route and I felt like I read them lazy. It was frustrating for me. So, I stayed poised, another chance came and I had to make a big time play.” Did the ball go off his helmet? “I’m not sure. A lot of people have been describing it as a crazy catch, ESPN Top Ten. I just saw the ball and tried to snatch it as fast as possible.” Can you talk about the discipline it takes to come up with that ball? “Discipline, lock in on the ball, snatch it, don’t give the defender a chance to make a play. If [QB] Drew [Brees] puts it in the air, he has a lot of trust in you to come down with that ball. That’s how I approach every play, every ball that’s in the air. He’s tremendously accurate, so I feel like he makes the job a lot easier. He took a chance on me. I think it was a third down, I’m not sure.” It was first down. “It was a first down, but I just made a play. We needed it, momentum. I helped my team. You obviously have earned a lot of trust from Drew. What does it mean to you when he’s making throws like that? “I love it. I try to show him week in and week out, preparation during the week, that I want to be that guy in that situation to make that play and help this team get a spark or momentum. I like those type of situations and those crunch time situation, because that really shows who you are.”

You guys started 0-3 and now are back to .500 at 4-4. What does that say about this football team? “Resilient. Even though we were 0-3 we kept believing. We trusted in the process, we trusted in each other and now we are here. ” How were you guys able to tighten up after the half? “Just don’t give up huge plays. Besides those two plays they ran all the way down the field and some late yardage late in the game when we were playing a little bit softer coverage. That was it. We understood that we’ve just got to be sound and not to beat ourselves. ” What did it mean to see your defense only give up 23 points today and the last week before to only give up 20 points, so you have only given up 43 points in the last two games. That is 23 today and 20 last week? “That is okay, it’s alright. We usually give up a lot more, so I guess that is progress. That is far over our goal.” What about the three takeaways you guys had? “That is the key to the game. Any time we can get [New Orleans Saints QB] Drew [Brees] the ball back in that offense, with the way they are rolling, we are going to be at a huge advantage.” You have won four of your last five games. It seems like you are kind of getting on a roll?

“We still have some things to correct. It is going to be interesting to see the film. We have to keep working and keep progressing.”
