Most often it is all about our machine, how pleased or in some cases how not satisfied we are with the current one, or the dreamed about new wanna one. We talk about patterns, or with some of us, our addiction with free motion quilting. I’m talking about the two days that we worked on the paper pieced Raffle Quilt. This was a wonderful experience to be part of. An amazing pattern with an intimidating picture of this gorgeous quilt that l, for one, in a million years would never have the knowledge on how it went together. Marilyn and Helen, the amazing teachers that they are, took the fear out of the nerve racking, turns, folds and cutting to the point that l thought, maybe l could really do a pattern like this, but certainly on a much smaller scale. The idea of having a class setting to assemble and sew the Raffle Quilt together was an excellent experience for members, such as myself. To be part of this massive, beautiful work of art, that we can be so very proud of. My understanding is the Quilt will be show cased at our June Pot Luck & Meeting. There are lots of other important work that will need our attention. People say a lot of work goes into the making of a Quilt. To me it is not work when you are getting enjoyment out of it. Work is pushing that lawn mower. Keep well and safe. See you at the meeting May 17th Marie Bolton New Millennium Quilters’ Guild Newsletter MAY 2016 Mailing Address: P.O. TUESDAY, DECEMBER 20 Christmas meeting

STARS of the Lemoyne Ruler Ten New Millennium Quilters took up the challenge to become “Stars” on April 20, 2016 guided by Leianne McCallum (aka the Lemoyne Star Queen), an employee from Quilter’s Cupboard, Uxbridge, Ontario. Using the Deb Tucker “Rapid Fire Lemoyne Star Ruler” Leianne taught the technique and shared many useful tips of how to put together a perfect block with perfect points that actually lays flat. We were all instructed to grope the edges to nest the seams and to avoid the “mushy-blendy method”. Another tip was the proper use of a starching product (i.e. Best Press) by spraying on the opposite side of the fabric and then turning it over to press it, which draws the starch upwards. Do not rush this process and let it completely dry before proceeding to cut any fabric to avoid fabric distortion. She discussed the importance of always maintaining the 45 degree cutting lines on the diagonal cuts, setting all seams and following the pressing directions to create a perfect flat block. The excitement began to grow as by lunch everyone had completed several perfect blocks. After lunch she shared hints that included the use the squaring up rulers to trim the final blocks or how to free float the star blocks by adding setting squares and strips. Leianne was an excellent teacher, full of fun, laughter and encouraging smiles. In the next few months members will be sharing their completed “Constellation Stars” Wall hangings or table runners. You be amazed with all the perfect points. Congratulations to everyone who became STARS and completed the Lemoyne Ruler Course. Karen Ruetz

COMMUNITY OUTREACH REPORT Requests for comfort quilts are to be made to Pat Golem at 519-506-2434 or at [email protected]. This month

five comfort quilts have been given away. Thanks to Sheila O’Hagan for donating a wonderful assortment of

fabrics again. They will soon be incorporated into comfort quilts.

Mirror Star Block

Mirror Star Image blocks need to be returned at the May meeting so we can begin planning their assembly

during the summer. Please include the extra half square triangle and the zip lock bag. If you need help finishing

it – come out to the afternoon sewing session.

Tuesday Workshop

At 1:30 pm outreach will be working on string quilt blocks that need to be assembled into tops as well as working

on the Walk About and Sinful Comfort patterns. Bring your sewing machine and supplies.

Quilt Frames

Our guild owns quilting stands and frames but the frames became warped and unusable. Diane Carson

generously donated her mother’s frames to our guild so the warped ones have now been replaced.

Raffle Tickets

Raffle tickets will be once again sold @ $2 each or 4 for $5 for the quilt top shown in the April newsletter.

Because we have no license to sell the tickets they are available to guild members only. The draw will be made

at the June meeting. Proceeds from the raffle will be used to purchase flannel for quilt backings. Many of our

comfort quilt recipients need them to be cozy during cancer treatments.

Quilts for Fort McMurray

The Hobby Horse Quilt Shoppe in Georgetown is a drop off location to send quilts to the wildfire victims.

Outreach will be making a donation sometime over the summer to this cause.

T-Shirt Dresses

In the fall outreach will be making some T-shirt dresses for the missions. If you have any youngsters who have

outgrown their T-shirts which are not worn out, set the T-shirts aside until the fall for us to work on then.

QUILT CANADA 2016 - June 15 - 18 The International Centre, Toronto www.canadianquilter.com CQA/ACC's Quilt Canada 2016 is the premier, national quilt show in Canada. Over 400 quilts will be on display in the National Juried Show. Trend-Tex Challenge, Modern Quilt Guild and Invitational Shows. Visit over 75 vendors to see the latest and greatest in everything quilting. Take advantage of the many workshops and lectures every day of the show to learn from amazing teachers from Canada and the United States. Classes are designed for beginners, intermediate and advance quilters and range from traditional to fibre art to long-arm quilting. Class options include half day, full day and two day workshops. Machines are provided by Janome and HandiQuilter. One of the door prizes is a Handi Quilter 18" Avante long-arm system with frame! CQA/ACC is proud to present a mobile app for Quilt Canada 2016! We have created a tutorial to help you through the steps of downloading it. cqacanadianquilting.blogspot.ca/search/label/mobile%20app It has everything a show guide would have in it, but better! Don't worry we are printing show guides, but they simply aren't able to contain all the information we crammed into our mobile app in an easy, user friendly way. Here are some of the perks to having a mobile app:

Everything is at your fingertips

There is a daily schedule and times of every show and event happening.

You can get instant notifications, for door prize winners, demo schedules, last minute changes, etc.

The activity stream is for you to see what everyone else is doing at Quilt Canada and for you to add in your comments and pics!

There is a map of the Merchant Mall with all of the vendors highlighted at the touch of your finger.

List of all vendors, workshops, speakers, and sponsors!

You can connect and make new friends on the app. One of the best parts about it, is if you are unable to go, you can download the app and look at all the quilts on the activity stream so you can see the talent and creativity
