Curiously, though, UNM’s two least productive rushing games this season came against two of the most porous run defenses in the nation: New Mexico State and Hawaii. If the Lobos can perform better in the passing game than they did in last year’s 28-21 loss to the Rams (58 yards, three interceptions), that certainly would help. Senior quarterback Austin Apodaca, the likely starter tonight, had some key completions in last week’s 24-21 victory at Utah State. A blocked field- goal attempt was crucial in last year’s loss to CSU. This year, the UNM field-goal unit (snapper Steven Romero, holder Sam Gentry, kicker Jason Sand- ers) has been impeccable. The Lobos won that game 30-13 in the season finale, as quarterback Don Woods rushed for 148 yards and passed for 128 more. But the victory wasn’t enough to save coach Rudy Feldman’s job after back-to-back losing seasons. >>> Two of UNM’s more dramatic victo- ries over CSU both were won with 33-yard field goals on the final play — the first in 2003 by Wes Zunker (37-34 in Albuquer- que), the second in 2006 by Kenny Byrd (20-19 in Fort Collins). >>> The Lobos came to Hughes Stadium in 2002 with a chance to earn a share of the Mountain West title, but coach Sonny Lubick’s 20th-ranked Rams prevailed 22-14. New Mexico running back DonTrell Moore rushed for 181 yards and a touchdown but lost two fumbles. >>> The Lobos are 8-12 all-time in games played at Hughes Stadium. Colorado State has won the last four. >>> Saturday’s game will be CSU’s last at Hughes Stadium. A new on-campus stadium will be ready the start of next sea- son. The Rams enter tonight’s game with a 145-114-2 record at Hughes. >>> Sign of the times: The cost to build Hughes Stadium, according to CSU, was $2.96 million in 1968. The construction cost for the new stadium is $220 million. >>> Joe Hansley, a CSU quality control assistant, caught the winning touchdown pass for the Rams in their 24-20 victory over UNM in 2012 — a 30-yarder from Connor Smith with 1:29 left in the game. >>> Colorado State wide receiver Michael Gallup was a teammate of UNM center Blaise Fountain at Butler County (Kan.) Community College in 2014-15. Rams linebacker Deshon Mayes and Lobos linebacker Evah Tohi were team- mates at Glendale (Ariz.) CC in 2014. >>> The 698 yards of total offense rolled up by CSU against UNM in 2014 is the Rams’ all-time best. The Rams’ 649 yards compiled against UNM in 2013 is No. 5. RAM NOTES SCOUTING THE RAMS New Mexico coach Bob Davie minces no words when he analyzes his defense’s travails against the CSU offense the past four seasons: “They’ve been bigger than us, they’ve been more physical than us, they’ve had a tailback every year that we’ve had a hard time tackling and they’ve had receivers we can’t cover.” Junior quarterback Nick Stevens opened the season as the starter, lost the job, then got it back when true freshman Collin Hill suffered a season-ending knee injury against Utah State on Oct. 8. Stevens has performed well since, espe- cially when throwing to blossoming go-to receiver Michael Gallup. The Rams’ tailback tandem of Dalyn Dawkins and Izzy Matthews has combined for 12 touchdowns and more than 1,000 yards. Senior linebacker Kevin Davis (four forced fumbles) and sophomore safety Braylin Scott (three inter- ceptions) lead the defense. This seems like a perfect setup for the Lobos: a UNM option-based offense that leads the nation in rushing against a Colorado State defense that gave up 485 yards on the ground to an option-based attack (Air Force’s) last week. A blocked field-goal attempt was crucial in last year’s loss to CSU. This year, the UNM field-goal unit (snapper Steven Romero, holder Sam Gentry, kicker Jason Sand-ers) has been impeccable.

SCOUTING THE LOBOS

LOBO NOTES>>> Colorado State’s Hughes Stadium

opened in 1968, but because of schedul-ing conflicts UNM didn’t play there until 1973. The Lobos won that game 30-13 in the season finale, as quarterback Don Woods rushed for 148 yards and passed for 128 more. But the victory wasn’t enough to save coach Rudy Feldman’s job after back-to-back losing seasons.

>>> Two of UNM’s more dramatic victo-ries over CSU both were won with 33-yard field goals on the final play — the first in 2003 by Wes Zunker (37-34 in Albuquer-que), the second in 2006 by Kenny Byrd (20-19 in Fort Collins).

A new on-campus stadium will be ready the start of next sea-son.

>>> Colorado State wide receiver

Michael Gallup was a teammate of UNM center Blaise Fountain at Butler County (Kan.) Community College in 2014-15. Rams linebacker Deshon Mayes and Lobos linebacker Evah Tohi were team-mates at Glendale (Ariz.) CC in 2014.

>>> The 698 yards of total offense rolled up by CSU against UNM in 2014 is the Rams’ all-time best. The Rams’ 649 yards compiled against UNM in 2013 is No. 5.

RAM NOTES

SCOUTING THE RAMS

New Mexico coach Bob Davie minces no words when he analyzes his defense’s travails against the CSU offense the past four seasons: “They’ve been bigger than us, they’ve been more physical than us, they’ve had a tailback every year that we’ve had a hard time tackling and they’ve had receivers we can’t cover.” Junior quarterback Nick Stevens opened the season as the starter, lost the job, then got it back when true freshman Collin Hill suffered a season-ending knee injury against Utah State on Oct. 8. Stevens has performed well since, espe-cially when throwing to blossoming go-to receiver Michael Gallup. The Rams’ tailback tandem of Dalyn Dawkins and Izzy Matthews has combined for 12 touchdowns and more than 1,000 yards. Senior linebacker Kevin Davis (four forced fumbles) and sophomore safety Braylin Scott (three inter-ceptions) lead the defense.
