PRAYER
WHAT PRAYER IS
I. WHAT PRAYER IS
A. Communication with God.
I. WHAT PRAYER IS
A. Communication with God.1. We talk to God on our
level and know He will meet us where we are. (Matthew 6:5-6)
Matthew 6:5-65 “And when you pray, you shall not be like the hypocrites. For they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the corners of the streets, that they may be seen by men. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward.
6 But you, when you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father Who is in the secret place; and your Father Who sees in secret will reward you openly.
I. WHAT PRAYER IS
A. Communication with God.2. We do not have to pray in
Elizabethan English or use fancy words. (Matthew 15:25)
Matthew 15:2525 Then she came and worshiped Him, saying, “Lord, help me!”
I. WHAT PRAYER IS
B. Fellowship with God.
I. WHAT PRAYER IS
B. Fellowship with God.1. Prayer should not be
limited to making requests of God. (Matthew 6:9-13)
Matthew 6:9-139 In this manner, therefore, pray: Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your Name. 10 Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. 11 Give us this day our daily bread. 12 And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. 13 And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever.
I. WHAT PRAYER IS
B. Fellowship with God.2. We should also tell God
how much we love Him and how awesome He is. (2 Samuel 7:18,22,26)
2 Samuel 7:18,22,2618 When King David went in and sat before the Lord; and he said: “Who am I, O Lord God? And what is my house, that You have brought me this far? … 22 Therefore You are great, O Lord God. For there is none like You, nor is there any God besides You, according to all that we have heard with our ears. …
26 So let Your name be magnified forever, saying, ‘The Lord of hosts is the God over Israel.’ And let the house of Your servant David be established before You.
EFFECTIVE PRAYER
II. EFFECTIVE PRAYER
A. Pray the will of God. (1 John 5:14-15).
1 John 5:14-1514 Now this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. 15 And if we know that He hears us, whatever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we have asked of Him.
II. EFFECTIVE PRAYER
B. Pray with confidence and expect results. (1 John 3:21-23)
1 John 3:21-2321 Beloved, if our heart does not condemn us, we have confidence toward God. 22 And whatever we ask we receive from Him, because we keep His commandments and do those things that are pleasing in His sight.
23 And this is His commandment: that we should believe on the Name of His Son Jesus Christ and love one another, as He gave us commandment.
II. EFFECTIVE PRAYER
C. Know when to use different types of prayer keys. (Matthew 16:18-19)
Matthew 16:18-1918 And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it. 19 And I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.”
CLASSIFICATIONS OF PRAYER—8 PRAYER KEYS
III. CLASSIFICATIONS OF PRAYER — 8 PRAYER KEYS
A. Praise and worship. (1 Kings 8:22-24)
1 Kings 8:22-2422 Then Solomon stood before the altar of the Lord in the presence of all the assembly of Israel, and spread out his hands toward heaven; 23 and he said: “Lord God of Israel, there is no God in heaven above or on earth below like You, who keep Your covenant and mercy with Your servants who walk before You with all their hearts.
24 You have kept what You promised Your servant David my father; You have both spoken with Your mouth and fulfilled it with Your hand, as it is this day.
III. CLASSIFICATIONS OF PRAYER — 8 PRAYER KEYS
B. Prayer of repentance. (2 Chronicles 7:13-14)
2 Chronicles 7:13-1413 When I shut up heaven and there is no rain, or command the locusts to devour the land, or send pestilence among My people, 14 if My people who are called by My Name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.
III. CLASSIFICATIONS OF PRAYER — 8 PRAYER KEYS
C. Prayer of faith. (James 5:13-16)
James 5:13-1613 Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray. Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing psalms. 14 Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the Name of the Lord.
15 And the prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. 16 Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.
III. CLASSIFICATIONS OF PRAYER — 8 PRAYER KEYS
D. Prayer of agreement. (Matthew 18:18-20)
Matthew 18:18-2018 “Assuredly, I say to you, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven. 19 “Again I say to you that if two of you agree on earth concerning anything that they ask, it will be done for them by My Father in heaven.
20 For where two or three are gathered together in My Name, I am there in the midst of them.”
III. CLASSIFICATIONS OF PRAYER — 8 PRAYER KEYS
E. Prayers of petition and supplication. (1 Kings 8:33-40)
1 Kings 8:33-4033 “When Your people Israel are defeated before an enemy because they have sinned against You, and when they turn back to You and confess Your name, and pray and make supplication to You in this temple, 34 then hear in heaven, and forgive the sin of Your people Israel, and bring them back to the land which You gave to their fathers.
35 “When the heavens are shut up and there is no rain because they have sinned against You, when they pray toward this place and confess Your name, and turn from their sin because You afflict them, 36 then hear in heaven, and forgive the sin of Your servants, Your people Israel, that You may teach them the good way in which they should walk; and send rain on Your land which You have given to Your people as an inheritance.
37 “When there is famine in the land, pestilence or blight or mildew, locusts or grasshoppers; when their enemy besieges them in the land of their cities; whatever plague or whatever sickness there is; 38 whatever prayer, whatever supplication is made by anyone, or by all Your people Israel, when each one knows the plague of his own heart, and spreads out his hands toward this temple:
39 then hear in heaven Your dwelling place, and forgive, and act, and give to everyone according to all his ways, whose heart You know (for You alone know the hearts of all the sons of men), 40 that they may fear You all the days that they live in the land which You gave to our fathers.
III. CLASSIFICATIONS OF PRAYER — 8 PRAYER KEYS
F. Intercessory prayer. (Genesis 18:20-33)
Genesis 18:20-3320 And the Lord said, “Because the outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is great, and because their sin is very grave, 21 I will go down now and see whether they have done altogether according to the outcry against it that has come to Me; and if not, I will know.” 22 Then the men turned away from there and went toward Sodom, but Abraham still stood before the Lord. 23 And Abraham came near and said, “Would You also destroy the righteous with the wicked?
24 Suppose there were fifty righteous within the city; would You also destroy the place and not spare it for the fifty righteous that were in it? 25 Far be it from You to do such a thing as this, to slay the righteous with the wicked, so that the righteous should be as the wicked; far be it from You! Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right?” 26 So the Lord said, “If I find in Sodom fifty righteous within the city, then I will spare all the place for their sakes.”
27 Then Abraham answered and said, “Indeed now, I who am but dust and ashes have taken it upon myself to speak to the Lord: 28 Suppose there were five less than the fifty righteous; would You destroy all of the city for lack of five?” So He said, “If I find there forty-five, I will not destroy it.” 29 And he spoke to Him yet again and said, “Suppose there should be forty found there?” So He said, “I will not do it for the sake of forty.”
30 Then he said, “Let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak: Suppose thirty should be found there?” So He said, “I will not do it if I find thirty there.” 31 And he said, “Indeed now, I have taken it upon myself to speak to the Lord: Suppose twenty should be found there?” So He said, “I will not destroy it for the sake of twenty.” 32 Then he said, “Let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak but once more: Suppose ten should be found there?”
And He said, “I will not destroy it for the sake of ten.” 33 So the Lord went His way as soon as He had finished speaking with Abraham; and Abraham returned to his place.
III. CLASSIFICATIONS OF PRAYER — 8 PRAYER KEYS
G. Prayers of thanksgiving. (Philippians 4:6-8)
Philippians 4:6-86 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; 7 and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
8 Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things.
III. CLASSIFICATIONS OF PRAYER — 8 PRAYER KEYS
H. Spiritual warfare. (Ephesians 6:10-18)
Ephesians 6:10-1810 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. 11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.
13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. 14 Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15 and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; 16 above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one.
17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God; 18 praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints.
