A note from the GenerAl mAnAGerBruce Furman, CCMHappy Birthday to The Peninsula Yacht Club! The Club’s Inception was in 1995 (23 years old) and the Club facilities were opened in 1996 (22 years old) of this month. What better way to celebrate the Club’s birthday than to come take a dip in the pool or grab a kayak and enjoy Lake Norman!

The Club may be getting older, but it has never looked better! It takes an outstanding team and a lot of hard work to maintain our high standards. I know you appreciate every one of them and their dedication; their hard work does not go unnoticed. Next time you see one of the team members going above and beyond, let them know as well as myself so, together we can continue in striving to be the best. Thank you to all departments: Food and Beverage, Marina/Aquatics, Administrative, Facilities and Activities.

Your Club and connection to the water,

Sincerely,Bruce Furman, CCM

swim team update Corey Hedges, Swim Coach

The Piranahs have kicked off the season with an awesome start! Falling by just 4 points to the Hamptons last week, both the Piranahs and Juniors have completed their first meets of the season. With just over 160 swimmers, the Piranhas have the largest team they have ever had! Thank you for all the parents who let your children build this team. We hope that by the end of the season, that all of the kids will

have improved their strokes, made friends, and enjoyed supporting their Piranah’s Team!

VESSEL REFUELINGRefueling vessels on the water is not something we should ever take lightly! Sounds pretty simple but there is a lot to take into consideration when fueling your vessel, before and after! You must always use extreme caution when fueling any type of vessel. All vessels are different and may multiple fill

ports, some for fuel but some may for water or waste. You must pay attention at all times to keep potentially deadly situations from happening.

Article by Boat USIt was the end to the Memorial Day weekend when a 32-foot motorboat with four people aboard pulled up to the fuel dock. Moments later, after filling up, an explosion ripped through the boat — literally separating it into clamshell-like halves. In an instant a 25-year old woman was dead. All of the boat’s remaining four occupants, as well as a fuel dock attendant was hospitalized.

Saddest of all, the accident may have been preventable. A newspaper reported that investigators found the recently purchased used boat, being refueled by its new owner for the first time, may have had a fuel system gasket, give way, or fail, which allowed gasoline fumes to escape and accumulate below decks. While the owner had properly turned the engine compartment blower on — a required procedure anytime a boat is refueled — not enough of the explosive fumes had been cleared before an engine backfire ignited the blast.

A simple sniff test may have prevented the tragedy. “While it appears the owner did the right thing by having the blower on to safely remove any fumes from the engine compartment area, he may not have performed the “sniff” test — lifting the engine compartment hatch in an attempt to smell any lingering gasoline fumes,” said Seaworthy Editor and BoatUS Director of Damage Avoidance Bob Adriance.

“Unlike a car, boats have fuel tanks and engines located in enclosed spaces which don’t allow gasoline vapors to escape. This accident shows how important it is do a sniff test every time a boat is refueled.”

Six Refueling Safety Tips:1. Always remove passengers from the boat, and re-board only after refueling is complete and the engine is restarted.

2. The engine should be turned off and do not operate any electrical switches, including the ignition while refueling.

3. Keep all doors, ports and hatches closed, and only open them when refueling is complete.

4. To prevent unintentional sparking hold the hose nozzle firmly against the fuel fill (and not a rod holder, water tank fill or holding tank, which happens more often than you think). Also don’t overfill.

5. After refueling, ensure the engine compartment blower runs for at least four minutes. This may delay others waiting to fill up, but it’s worth the wait.

6. A quick sniff test takes only a few seconds and is the most effective method for detecting fuel leaks. Always open the engine bay hatch (if the boat is equipped) and smell the bilge area as well as any closed compartments or interior spaces.

Marina Manager ReminderRefuel ServiceFor only $35 allow us to take care of your vessel refuel. Give us at least 24-48 hrs notice and we will safely bring your vessel over to the gas dock, refuel to 90% and safely put you back in the slip, so your vessel is refueled and ready when you arrive.

the sAIlInG scene Jim Hill, Sail Fleet Captain

The Spring Fellowship Series races have just been completed, with 4 races complete prior to the last race on June 24th. The PYC Fellowship Series is a great excuse to get out on a boat on a Sunday afternoon and sail around the course with fellow sailors. The after race discussions in the PYC bar are also a great opportunity to meet other sailors, discuss tactics and sail trim and socialize with friends. The Fall Series will be starting up in September with the first race on September 9th.

Racing is not the only activity your Club offers for sailors, or members who wish to learn to sail. Here are few of the other things that the Club is doing to allow you and your children to enjoy our beautiful Lake Norman.

Junior Sailing: The PYC Summer Camp is the place to start for your children or grandchildren who might be interested in sailing. Sessions are offered for Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced sailors. The Club also has a Junior Sailing Team that practices on Thursdays and Saturdays, and hosts a high school team based at Hough High. We have eight foot Optimist Prams for beginners and 13 foot Lasers, 420’s and Melges 14’s for the intermediate and advanced sailors. The activities are supervised by the Club staff and a coach dedicated to the sailing program.

Adult Sailing and Social Sailing: The Club’s 13 foot 420’s, Lasers and Melges 14’s are available (when the junior’s aren’t using them) for adults to check out and use without charge after a short check out by a staff member. Sailing lessons are also available for someone who is just starting out in sailing or who just want to get a taste for it. With sufficient interest the Club is positioned to offer adult ‘learn to sail classes’ in the evenings. For additional information on individual lessons or an adult sailing class contact Jennifer Milwee, the Club’s Activities Director.

Raft-ups are a great opportunity to socialize with other club members. The Power Boat Fleet schedules raft-ups about once a month, with hot dogs and refreshments provided by the Club.

Peninsula Cup Regatta, Volunteering and Crew Board: Check out the ‘Sailing’ tab on the PYC website. There you will find details about the Peninsula Cup Regatta, volunteer opportunities for the Regatta and Race Committee and opportunities to sign up to crew on a boat that races.

The sailing program at PYC has be growing and evolving over the past few years with additional opportunities for you, the members, to get out and enjoy the lake. If you have additional ideas about sailing activities you would like to see at the Club, please contact the Sail Fleet Captain, Jim Hill at [email protected] or the PYC Activities Director, Jennifer Milwee at [email protected]

NIGHTTIME NAVIGATION Saturday, July 28 | 8:00 pmJoin Harry Smith to go out on the water and see the lake in a whole new way. See navigational aids, channel markers, shoal markers vessel lights and what they mean! More details online.
