Insight / Up Close
ARTIST Donna Marcus ARTWORK Delphinus
ARTIST Oliver van den Berg ARTWORK Star Projector
Setting the tone for the ground floor of KAUST’s research lab, Oliver van
den Berg has created Star Projector. Based upon an actual apparatus
which was used for projecting an accurate image of the night sky in
large planetariums, the 5.7m steel and aluminum structure has all of
the appearance of futuristic technology without the function. Reduced to
pure form, it stands to reflect something of the nature of the human
beings who created it.
Oliver van den Berg’s work is an ambitious and wonderful folly.
A romantic work, it speaks to the adventurer and dreamer inside each of
us, and our capacity to suspend our disbelief and imagine the
unimaginable. A ‘blind’ telescope, it operates as a metaphor for sight
and seeing as believing in an age of hyper reality.
Star Projector speaks of humanity’s shared desire for knowledge and the unknowable, and acknowledges the legacy
of Arabic scholars and scientists in the fields of astronomy and science.
Bits & Pieces IBM, Coca Cola, Peugeot, Starbucks or Dell has spent many years discovering talent outside their R&D departments. “Billions of connected individuals can now actively participate in innovation, wealth creation and social development in ways we once only dreamed of.” That’s according to the ground-breaking book on open innovation Wikinomics: How Mass Collaboration Changes Everything. “Leaders must think differently about how to compete and be profitable, and embrace a new art and science of collaboration we call wikinomics…We’re talking about deep changes in the structure and modus operandi of the corporation and our economy, based on new competitive principles such as openness, peering, sharing and acting globally.” (This short article by Mar Abad appeared in the October 2010 issue of Ling Magazine, Vueling Airlines, p. 59)
Old Laptops put to good use
During the upcoming Eid al Adha in November my family and I will be travelling to Darjeeling in the Indian Himalayas. For many years we have been supporting a non-denominational grass
roots social organization (Himalayan Hope Trust) there that supports needy children and they
are always keen to receive second hand laptops to use in their educational programs. If you have
an old laptop that is no longer being used, consider donating to these young children. For more
information on the Himalayan Hope Trust or details concerning this call for laptops please
contact Scott Herrington at [email protected] or 053 5265403.

We have a carpet merchant coming to our home on Wednesday, October 27, to show off his carpets. He was born and grew up in Turkmenistan and now lives in Jeddah, so he knows the region well. He travels to Afghanistan, Turkey, Turkmenistan and lots of other "stans" to buy carpets and brings them here to sell. He was here in April this year, and the general consensus was that his carpets were excellent, and prices good as well. So, if you would like to come to see the carpet show and/or purchase carpets, please be at our house, I-5509 from 7pm, and the show will start at 7:30pm. If this is of interest to you, we will look forward to seeing you at our place: Cecil and Lynda Murray.
