The International Olympic Committee (IOC) yesterday trimmed the list of Candidate Cities for the 2020 Summer Games to three by eliminating Baku

(Azerbaijan) and Doha (Qatar). Istanbul (Turkey), Madrid (Spain) or Tokyo

(Japan) will now be chosen to host the Games at the 125th IOC Session in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on September 7, 2013.

“The first phase (of the bid process) has got some criteria to see which cities have the potential to go further in the process,” said IOC Executive Director of the Olympic Games Gilbert Felli. “It could be one, it could be five.” The announcement was made by IOC

Communications Director Mark Adams, with Felli at his side, at the 2012 SportAccord Convention. At the IOC briefing earlier in the day, Adams said that negotiations between the IOC and the United States Olympic Committee on revenue-sharing were progressing very well, signalling an agreement could be close.

“We’re very positive,” he said. “Things are very much headed in the right direction.”

The IOC, in its Working Group Report, concluded on the Applicant Cities:

BakuBaku’s aspirations, vision and commitment are evident. The Working Group nevertheless feels that the city’s infrastructure and Games’ planning

and experience are not sufficiently developed at this stage to deliver a successful Olympic Games in 2020. Concern was also expressed whether the significant amount of construction required to host the Games was consistent with the size and legacy needs of the city.

DohaDoha’s aspirations, vision and commitment are evident. The Working Group has endeavoured to highlight in this report the risks presented by the Doha application which it trusts will assist the Executive Board. As some of these touch upon areas that go beyond the Working Group’s remit, the Group leaves it to the Executive Board to deliberate these when taking its decision.

Two cut from 2020 Games list

Hugh Robertson MP, the UK Minister for Sport and the Olympics, and Lord Sebastian Coe, Chair of the London Organising Committee for the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG), will this morning provide SportAccord delegates with an unmissable update on preparations for the highly-anticipated event.

Robertson, pictured, is a late addition to the Conference program, with just over two months to go before the start of the London 2012 Games. Go to Conference Hall 400C to hear his thoughts from 9.40am and to find out more about Robertson, turn to Page 2.

Later in the day at 3.40pm, LOCOG Director of Sport Debbie Jevans will continue the London 2012 theme in a session entitled ‘London: 64 days to go’.

There is much more besides London 2012 to engage delegates on the final day of the Conference, though.

Professor Jan-Anders Månson, President of AISTS, will speak about ‘When Innovation Challenges Sport’ from 10.20. You can find out more about AISTS by turning to p4 of today’s edition of The Daily.

John Amaechi, who made a big impact in a Conference address at the Convention yesterday (see Page 2), will return on a panel alongside several other influential figures, including Dr. Timothy Shriver of the Special Olympics (who was featured in The Daily on Monday), to discuss ‘Socially Responsible Sport’ from 11am.

Amaechi tells iFs to ‘start delivering’ Forthright former NBA star

John Amaechi OBE threw down the gauntlet to International Federations at the SportAccord Convention

Conference yesterday by telling them: “Modify the promises or start delivering.”

Amaechi, who was delivering his speech “Fulfilling Sport’s Promise to Society”, has witnessed first-hand a disturbing trend of sport failing to keep its promises.

“People have bought into the power of sport and that it does great things, but when you talk about these promises, so many are bold and unregulated,” he said.

One of the biggest issues raised by Amaechi was the false notion that sport was inclusive to everyone of all backgrounds.

To illustrate his point, he asked the audience to recall their days on the school playground, where children chose unpopular classmates last for teams.

“One of the first myths we looked at was that sport was for everybody, that it was inclusive, but it was clear it wasn’t for everybody,” said Amaechi.

“It’s naturally exclusive, on the

playground up to the elite. All the programs we build will fail the young people who are different and those who are different.”

Amaechi challenged IFs to be more inclusive and called on sporting bodies to change in order to truly deliver on their promise to society.

“The idea that sport does good, that

needs to change,” said Amaechi. “Initiatives in sport will do exactly what we want them to do and nothing else.

“I see too many initiatives where well-meaning is good enough. Sport is one of those curious areas where we have the least qualified people, the least interpersonal people. We need to address the people in sport.”

iMG Media President Michel Masquelier believes the rapid pace of technology is influencing how sport is consumed by different generations.

In a lively SportAccord Convention Conference session yesterday entitled ‘Quick Hits and Mobile Clips’, Masquelier spoke about how short-form sports broadcasts – packaged in a series of short highlights and consumed by a younger generation – have now emerged to challenge the traditional way to watch sport on television.

However, Masquelier said: “I would not put them against each other. You will constantly have technology that will help you enjoy the experience. You need to retain the attention and build that fan base.”

Mark Lazarus, Chairman of NBC Sports Group, agreed that both formats should not be treated separately, but urged broadcasters to plan ahead as technology continues to evolve.

Earlier in the day, a partner in leading public relations agency Ketchum Sports and Entertainment warned at a panel session at the Convention that there would be “winners and losers” over the next 10 years as sports battle for popularity.

Ann Wool, who is also Managing Director of the global New York-based company, issued her warning as five panellists discussed the question

‘What will the top game-changers in sport be over the next decade?’

“One of the most obvious things, but most forgotten, is that sports are brands. Ultimately they will live or die by how popular they are,” she said.

“Fans are going to be influenced and to make choices about what the coolest sport is that day, that year. Over the next 10 years we’ll see winners and losers in the game of success.”

The panellists agreed there would continue to be new ways of allowing fans to get closer to athletes — be it through social media, new broadcast technologies or innovations in video games.

Badminton project grows

International Rugby Board (IRB) Chairman Bernard Lapasset has welcomed the announcement that Rugby Sevens will again feature at the Central American and Caribbean Games, in 2014, at Veracruz in Mexico.

He is especially pleased that a women’s competition will be included for the first time and will run alongside a men’s event, which made a successful Games debut in 2010 in Guyana. The memorandum of understanding signed between the IRB and the Central American and Caribbean Sports Organization (CACSO) means there will be tournaments for eight men’s and women’s teams in Mexico. “We are committed to delivering an exceptional and competitive event that will further the profile of the Games, rugby and our shared values,” Lapasset said.

The Badminton World Federation’s ‘Shuttle Time’ project is now being implemented on five continents, according to chief operating officer Thomas Lund. The initiative aims to give teachers and coaches the skills required to develop the next generation of the sport’s superstars.

“The project involves member associations and the public sector, and it is already becoming a monster – we can barely cope with all of the requests – so it is a very positive development case,” Lund said. “We carried out different pilot projects in different places, but it is now spreading extensively. Thousands of kids will benefit worldwide.”

Engaging the whole Indianapolis community was the key to this year’s National Football League (NFL) Super Bowl being hailed as the greatest of all time, according to Host Committee Chief Executive Allison Melangton.

Melangton, speaking yesterday at SportAccord Convention on ‘Hosting the World’s Largest Tailgate Party’, explained that the committee had opted for such an approach because Indianapolis did not possess the characteristics of a normal Super Bowl city.

“We made our residents our greatest asset,” she said.

“In the course of preparations, we had a total of 8,000 volunteers and over 150,000 hours of work, with 26 community programs just for the Super Bowl.

“There was a huge sense of accomplishment and pride within the community – a home run for the city and the state.”

This involvement from the community allowed the committee to arrange a memorable 10-day event, instead of only a four-hour football game, around Super Bowl.

An enormous Super Bowl village was built in part of the downtown area, where over 70 musical bands performed over the 10 days.

“We also had four zip lines that took 10,000 rides in the course of the event and that attracted a lot of people,” said Melangton.

“We also took 32 Indy Cars and branded the logo of each NFL team on them.”

The Super Bowl ended up attracting over a million people to the downtown area and Melangton stressed this was all due to the residents.

“They were so engaged in projects around the Super Bowl and that made them feel responsible for the Super Bowl,” she added.

evolving sponsorship valuesSponsorship of sporting events and sporting organisations is becoming less of a business transaction and more about sharing values, according to Thierry Borra, Director of Olympic Games with the Coca-Cola Company.

On a panel session that looked at ‘The changing landscape of sports sponsorship,’ Borra said yesterday at SportAccord Convention that such commercial deals were no longer just about buying an advertising board at an event. “The key thing is to look at the way the partnership has evolved,” said Borra. “Showing the values and the vision is key. There is no other choice when you want

to develop your movement or brand.” While Borra admits that a drink like Coca-

Cola is not the healthiest product available and there may not be an obvious correlation between healthy living that sport promotes and Coca-Cola, he insists their aims do align.

“It is a society issue because of a lack of activity or a lack of practice of sports,” said Borra, who outlined the variety of products his company produces that are healthier than the flagship brand. “As a major company, this is very serious for us,” he said. “We’re trying to have an active role in that. We have more than 200 programs around the world trying to persuade people to practise sport.”EVOLVED Thierry Borra

The 2012 winter youth Olympic Games was hailed as a success at yesterday morning’s General Assembly of the Association of international Olympic winter sports Federations (AiOwF) at sportAccord Convention.A recap of the inaugural winter youth Olympic Games, which took place in innsbruck, Austria, was one of the key items on the agenda.

horst Lichtner, secretary General of the international ice hockey Federation (iihF), said: “Technically, organisationally and financially, those Games were a success.”

Lichtner added that age group categories may need tweaking in certain events in future editions of the Games and efforts to reduce venue costs should also be prioritised.

The Organising Committee for the sochi 2014 Olympic Games was also on hand to update AiOwF members on preparations for the big event – covering areas as broad as accommodation, hotels, transportation, ticketing and venue construction.

“Test events for new venues are for both sides. it’s them showing they’re ready and us testing whether they are ready,” Lichtner explained.

iihF President dr. rené Fasel was also backed by members to continue representing AiOwF on the international Olympic Committee (iOC) executive board. The iOC accepted the proposal to retain Fasel on the executive board yesterday, and an official decision will be made at the iOC session in London in July.

The International Academy of Sports Science and Technology (AISTS) is returning to SportAccord Convention with the goal of building on

the “great success” of last year’s event in London, according to Executive Director Dr Claude Stricker.

For the second year in a row, Switzerland-based AISTS, which operates as a consultancy and an organiser of educational programmes for the sports industry, has a booth at the Convention.

Having worked in new markets such as India, Brazil and China since the start of 2012 as its business has continued to grow, the academy is keen to connect with all members of the international sporting community in Québec City.

“Attending SportAccord Convention means we can meet with International Federations, sports organisations and cities and present our services so we can show them how they can benefit from our experience and expertise,” Stricker said.

“Last year’s Convention was a great success for us. As exhibitors we could showcase who we are and what we do, and we gained many new contacts. It was obvious that we had to repeat this.”

AISTS was founded in 2000 by the International Olympic Committee, the École Polytechnique Fédérale de

Lausanne, IMD Business School, the University of Lausanne, the University of Geneva, the Swiss Graduate School of Public Administration, École Hôtelière de Lausanne, the City of Lausanne and the Canton of Vaud.

The academy operates educational programmes in sports management for sports organisations and organises the AISTS MSA Master of Advanced Studies in Sports Administration and Technology every year for professionals seeking to forge a career in the sports industry.

Considering the academy’s positioning at the cutting edge of the industry, Professor Jan-Anders Månson, the President of AISTS, is well placed to offer a key insight into the sector as a keynote speaker on the topic of ‘The future of high-performance sport’ today.

denson: we must invest in youth

nussLi’s deLiGhTFuL dOzenCharlie Denson, President of the Nike Brand,

NIKE Inc, urged all sports organisations to invest in youth when he opened the 2012 SportAccord Convention Conference yesterday.

In a keynote address entitled “Inspiring the Next Generation”, he spoke of the need to provide better access to sport for a younger generation that has become increasingly inactive.

“I believe we all need to think differently and work together to help reverse the disturbing trends that continue to prevent young people around the world from having access to sport,” said Denson.

“In a relatively short period of time, physical activity has been designed and engineered out of our lives with dramatically underestimated human, social and economic costs. Frighteningly, for the first time in generations, the average 10-year-old today is expected to live a shorter and lower quality of life than his parents or grandparents.”

This startling possibility has inspired Denson to use Nike Brand as a vehicle for change in sporting communities around the world and he called on all sports organisations to work together in a common goal that Denson believes will benefit everyone involved.

“We believe that enabling access to sport and physical play – especially for kids – is one of the greatest investments society can make,” said Denson. “It can provide the next generation with skills such as teamwork, fair play, determination, self-confidence, creativity, resilience and, of course, physical and emotional health.”

The London Olympic and Paralympics will mark the Nussli Group’s 12th Games as a partner providing expertise in event, stadia and exhibition construction.

In London the Swiss-based international company will be responsible for providing temporary structures at the venues so that they meet security, technical and media specifications.

“It’s fantastic for us to participate, especially in London,” said Chief Marketing Officer Daniel Cordey, speaking at the company’s exhibition stand at SportAccord Convention. “It’s a sports hub and an international one, so it’s a great pleasure to be there and part of it.”

Nussli will be helping Olympic partners exhibit their brands by setting up the many pavilions and stands that will be on display during the Games.

Cordey sees big events like the Olympics as a showcase for the industry itself. As a result, he wants to demonstrate what Nussli is capable of.

“We see what we are doing as not only speaking for Nussli, but for the industry as well. There is an increasing demand and what we do serves the stakeholders’ needs more and more,” he said.

“It’s a big development and we are part of that.”

BENEFIT Dr Claude Stricker

london: a year onThe 2011 SportAccord Convention in London has already provided tangible legacy benefits for the UK capital, according to Iain Edmondson, the Head of Major Events at London & Partners, the city’s events agency.

Just one year on from staging SportAccord Convention, Edmondson is able to look back on a series of bidding victories for London, which was named on Tuesday as the 2012 Sports City of the Year by SportBusiness, a Media Partner of the Convention.

“From a major events point of view, the impact of SportAccord Convention has been a major success,” said Edmondson, pictured. “The event helped us to demonstrate how serious we are about world sport.

“We had four key targets when we were staging SportAccord Convention last year - the 2017 International Association of Athletics Federations World Championships, the 2013

International Triathlon Union World Championship Series Grand Final, the 2015 International Canoe Federation Slalom World Championships – and we also wanted to develop the concept of a new annual cycling event for the city.

“We won the three bids and we’re now working with the UCI (Union Cycliste Internationale, the International Cycling Union) on developing an annual event that will be a big milestone for world cycling.”

The proposed annual cycling event would be a mass participation extravaganza for up to 35,000 riders. The route would be the same as for the Olympic road race this summer, but it would also act as a UCI-ranked race for top riders.

“There’s a boom in participation numbers in cycling, and it has a UK-wide and worldwide appeal,” Edmondson said. “It is the perfect time to do something like this in cycling.”

Virtually all sportAccord members now comply with the world Anti-doping Agency Code, according to Françoise dagouret, Manager of the sportAccord doping-Free sport unit (dFsu).

Only two of the 90 international Federations that are part of sportAccord are not code-compliant, but dagouret confirmed they are on the brink of being so.

“i’m confident it will happen in a few weeks,” she said in an update on the dFsu at sportAccord Convention.

dagouret disclosed that the number of staff on the unit had increased from one to four and its budget is now just under 700,000 swiss Francs, up from a starting point of about 175,000 swiss Francs. in her briefing yesterday morning at

sportAccord Convention she also highlighted the biological passport pilot project that the unit is involved in with the international ski Mountaineering Federation (isMF).

“with this project we were able to prove that the biological passport isn’t only for the biggest iFs,” she explained.

Over the past three years the dFsu has also developed at-cost and free services for its members. At-cost services include in and out-of-competition testing, therapeutic use exemptions and access to an online, anti-doping education program.

The free services consist of a daily newsletter, email and phone hotline, and the option of informal meetings at the unit’s Lausanne office.

The course for a new FIS Cross-Country World Cup event to be held in Québec City later this year was unveiled yesterday.

Gian Franco Kasper, President of the Fédération Internationale de Ski (FIS), International Ski Federation, and Pierre-Karl Péladeau, President and CEO of Québecor, announced the Sprint Québec event, which will take place from December 6 to 9.

The 800-metre course will be set up in the streets of Old Québec for the competition, which will include team and individual races.

The first FIS Cross-Country World

Cup event to be held in a North American city, it will also kick off the World Cup season.

“The idea isn’t to always have cross-country events in large cities, but once or twice we must bring the athletes to the public,” Kasper said.

It was also announced that the FIS Snowboard World Championships will take place in Québec City as well early next year, the first time a senior FIS World Championship will be held in the province.

From January 16 to 27 snowboarders will compete in six disciplines in Québec City and at the Stoneham Mountain Ski Resort, 20 minutes outside the city.

Zhuravlev, whose executive board is responsible for the management of the Games, reported that preparations for the event were on track thanks to the support the board had received from politicians. “We have received support from the federal government of Russia and the government of Saint Petersburg has been very active, friendly and supportive in preparation for the Games,” he added.

This week Zhuravlev is attending SportAccord Convention to meet with

rodrigo Otoya, President of the Cali Local Organizing Committee (CLOC) for The 2013 World

Games, has played down worries that facilities for the Games may not be completed in time.

Concerns about construction delays were expressed by Member Federations during the International World Games Association (IWGA) General Meeting at SportAccord Convention in Québec City.

However, Otoya eased those doubts by saying: “We have some difficulties with the water skiing,

because we have to buy some land to increase the size of the lake at the venue, but I think it is the only one that we have some difficulty with. The other venues are going to be right in time for the Games.”

Otoya, a local entrepreneur, was elected as President by CLOC in late January, when the committee underwent executive changes.

He brought a sports background to CLOC, having been President of Deportivo Cali, one of the city’s two First Division football clubs.

“This is a great opportunity for our country, our city, to have these Games,” Otoya said at SportAccord Convention. “We have a special

development in the security area, in the economy, so I think we have a great opportunity to develop these Games in our city.”

He believes that the economic benefits of hosting the Games will be felt in all sectors within Cali – the first South American city to stage the Games, especially within the hospitality industry.

Otoya added: “I think the biggest impact is going to be the distribution of about $50million to different sectors of the economy. We have an opportunity for the hotels to be full because there are going to be about 5,000 people for the Games.”

The Daily: will the ‘heroes’ campaign be showcased during london 2012?Jw: “Absolutely! The FIVB is very excited about the unique opportunity offered by LOCOG

and the IOC to showcase the ‘FIVB Heroes’ campaign. We will be presenting our sport and its top players through our campaign activities, which will support LOCOG to enhance the spectator experience.”

The Daily: what does the future hold for the FiVB?Jw: “Starting from 2013, a new sustainable model will be implemented by the FIVB, its organisers and partners, which foresees a number of changes,

transportation is often the biggest source of pollution associated with holding an international event. the greenhouse gases and emissions produced by the transportation of participants and organisers have a significant impact on air quality and climate change.

it is therefore desirable to find realistic and effective solutions to reduce those emissions. for sportaccord convention, greenhouse gas emissions produced by the transportation of delegates, energy consumption and waste landfilling will be calculated. this will provide a benchmark for future years as the convention aims to decrease its carbon footprint over time.

you can also play your part in decreasing the event’s carbon footprint by, for example, taking the special sportaccord convention shuttle bus to the airport. and why not get a real feel for québec city by walking to and from your hotel? all of the event’s hotels are located within walking distance of the convention centre, and going by foot will take you past some of québec city’s most attractive landmarks.

The Scottish city of Glasgow unveiled a new seven-year events strategy at SportAccord Convention yesterday. ‘Sports Events Glasgow 2012-2018’ follows a three-year strategy, from 2008 to 2011, which was introduced shortly after Glasgow was awarded the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

Paul Bush OBE, Chief Operating Officer of SportAccord Convention Silver Partner EventScotland, has backed Glasgow to build on the momentum of the previous three-year plan. “Glasgow’s new strategy underlines the ambition and determination in the city to attract and secure major events,” Bush said.

“EventScotland is responsible for the delivery of the national events strategy. ‘Scotland The Perfect Stage’ and ‘Sports Events Glasgow 2012-2018’ will undoubtedly help to strengthen our position.

“Looking ahead, we have some hugely exciting events on the horizon, and EventScotland will look forward to continuing our excellent relationship with Glasgow up to 2018 and beyond.”

From 2008 to 2011 a number of big events in gymnastics, rugby, cycling, netball and swimming were secured through the efforts of Glasgow Life, Glasgow City Marketing Bureau, EventScotland, UK Sport and National Governing Bodies of sport. Glasgow also recently confirmed it would bid to host the 2018 Youth Olympic Games. For more on eventscotland, check out stand 35.

Delegates have been invited to attend a ceremony later today to mark an agreement regarding the use of French at the London 2012 Olympic Games. Michaëlle Jean, of the Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie, and Lord Sebastian Coe, Chair of the London Organising Committee for the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG), will be present for the signing ceremony at 5.45pm.

ATOS, an international IT services company and worldwide IT Partner for the Olympic and Paralympic Games, is looking to the future after acquiring MSL Technology, a provider of real-time results and information systems for sports events. The relationship started with the 1992 Summer Olympics. For more information about Atos, check out Stand 113.

Holland Moves has invited SportAccord Convention delegates to attend a cocktails reception in the Exhibition Hall at 4.30pm today. Holland Moves is setting the pace in bringing sporting events to the country – from grassroots to elite – so come along to find out more about their track record and future ambitions. DON’T SWEAT IT. LET US.

The Daily: is it time for sports rights-holders to switch focus from television to the internet? gian Franco kasper: “Yes and no. The internet is extremely important for young people interested in sport. However, in the end for a sport such as ours, television provides the best platform to show the blue skies, the white snow and the beautiful mountains. In a sense the show can become a secondary part to the initial attraction for viewers. Television is hugely important for us, but I don’t think the internet or television should necessarily exclude each other.”Peter angell: “Where we’re talking about premium rights for the biggest events, then the answer is pretty clear: No at the moment. The reason for that is quite clear. The audience for those kinds of events is of a level where the support of traditional television, traditional broadcast media and the advertising model that goes along with that works absolutely well and that’s the best revenue stream for those types of events. When you get down to an interesting question regarding whether there’s a different way for sports rights to be monetised away from the traditional broadcast media, then I think we’re starting to see that possibility arising.”scott guglielmino: “Our motto is to serve the fan wherever and whenever sport is being talked about. Whatever we’re doing, we ask ourselves, are we serving the fan? For many years now we’ve realised that through the web we can serve the fan in a multitude of ways. We consciously started many years ago to pursue this exactly, and that pursuit is especially technology. From a sports fan’s perspective, you want to stay in touch with the sport in question wherever you are, whenever you want.”

The Daily: is using the internet the best

way to engage young people?sg: “The demographic, especially for something like the X Games, is particularly young, and that younger demographic has a larger proclivity for digital media. For something like the X Games and the different digital platforms that are out there with technology, there’s a terrific interaction between the two when you’re trying to serve the fan, because they’re used to ingesting these snack-sized videos that you get from an iPhone or a tablet. In the end, we have to flat out serve the fan.”

the daily: with the increasing availability of internet-connected tvs and other connected devices such as smartphones and tablets, for example, isn’t there a momentum behind non-traditional platforms?Pa: “I think the question isn’t as simple as whether people are going to stop watching sport on TV and start watching it on some other form of digital handheld device or fixed device, but what certainly will happen is people will exercise their right to choose and will go out and look for content if they can’t find it in the place where they would regularly find it on traditional broadcast TV.

“And there will be certainly a market growing that enables that viewership to find the sports they want to see.”

the daily: gian franco, your if has been developing its own innovative video news release service via online platforms over the last couple of years, hasn’t it?gFk: “Yes, we have, in close co-operation with Infront Sports and Media.

“We did a lot of research into developing this service and local organisers can rely heavily on internet exposure. It has been

the daily asked: is it time for sports rights-holders to switch focus from television to the internet? you say: yes – 17%, No – 83%

yOu sAy

successful so far and it complements television coverage.”

The Daily: as you mentioned earlier, is the quality of the image online more important than ever, particularly when viewers can now easily access crisp high-definition television coverage?gFk: “The quality of the picture is absolutely crucial. If the picture is not sharp, it cannot show the beauty of the race and its surroundings. Also, if the stream is disrupted, it can make the viewing less enjoyable.”

The Daily: on this topic, it all seems to be about accessibility, doesn’t it?sg: “You want to be able to get what you want where you are, and quickly. We call this the best available screen, meaning that we want fans to be able to take in and interact with what they want on the best available screen.

“This means you can get the sport through your television, but you can also get it through your tablet, through your phone.

“If you happen to be on the move, in a train, at the office, we try and make sure you have it available no matter where you are. It’s part of the way we do business.”

The Daily: for the smaller sports and ifs, they obviously have a tougher challenge of securing exposure on mainstream television. is it better for them to be shown on television at, for example, 2am, or live online in a primetime slot?Pa: “That’s a really interesting question. I think it’s very much down to the type of sport and the territory they’re in. We’ve seen quite a few internet TV launches that allow for subscriptions to watch certain sports.

“That’s probably a better model than the pursuit of the impossible, which is trying to find your way in a very, very competitive free space. It’s a difficult one to predict because it really depends a lot on

the particular federation and the particular sport and the particular market. Some sports perform in a very different way in certain markets - cycling is very different in France and Belgium, for example, than it is in the United States, in Canada, or anywhere else.

“So it depends: Do you want to be live at 2am, where you may get an immeasurably small audience, or do you want to be able to target your audience and measure exactly what they are and deliver them exactly what they want for a very small fee?

“The latter may make better sense in a particular market for a particular sport.”

The Daily: do the interactive opportunities of the internet represent a key advantage over television?sg: “Interactivity is a big part of it. It allows consumers to take in content when they want. It’s allowed voting and other ways for fans to interact, to share their approval, disapproval, what they like, what they don’t like. Fans want to interact with their sports generally, so it’s our job to work with technology and see how far we can push that.”

The Daily: so what are your thoughts on bundling rights across different platforms, comprising television and new media?Pa: “I think it really depends on the market – the individual territory, the individual market you are selling to. I think in big TV markets with big broadcasters where exclusivity in particular in the pay-television area is everything, then they really want exclusivity.

“So they want to have every conceivable form of audio-visual right protected from within the framework of their agreement. That makes sense as long as they then exploit that right.

“I think where rights owners will have difficulties is where they include a right in the package all bundled together and it never gets used, and that’s not good for the rights owner and more importantly it’s not good for the viewer. I think those forms of agreements that have those rights are being subject to more of the ‘use it or lose it’ types of clauses in contracts.”

should We still focus on tv?

SPORTING PRIDE Geoff Molson

it’s afamily legacy

‘the fans are so important. the feeling

you get from fans is amazing… when you’re

doing well’

establishing a lasting legacy is not easy. For a family to leave its mark on a city for generation after generation is extremely rare. However, since John Molson

arrived from England and chose Montreal to be home to the first brewery in North America 226 years ago, the Molson family’s influence on Québec, and Canada as a whole, has been immense.

Geoff Molson represents the seventh generation of arguably Montreal’s most famous family. Growing up, he could only dream of being the one to take over the enormous family business one day.

As he discovered, it would not come easy. He started off like everybody else – as a summer intern, taking on a variety of tasks from going to grocery stores and stacking cases to promoting the Molson Brewery’s beer at numerous bars in Montreal.

“I wanted a place in the family business right after I finished university, but it wasn’t encouraged by my father who wanted me to go out there and get some experience,” Molson said.

Combining his Bachelor of Arts in a multi-field major in Economics, French and

Canadian Studies, Molson

worked at Coca-Cola as a global media services assistant.

He later moved to Manhattan where he accepted the position of Senior Consultant at the strategy consultancy firm CSC Consulting.

“I have moved six times and have had the chance to live in different environments, different cultures and different companies, and adapt to those,” he said. “I have to say my father was right.

“Leaving Montreal to work exposed me to people and companies who don’t know Molson. You learn to compete on your own and be effective on your own the right way.”

Molson certainly did prove himself, and his father knew it.

In 2005 it finally happened. Molson came back to his hometown of Montreal to take on the role of Vice-President of Marketing for the Molson Brewery. In 2009 he became the owner of the Montreal Canadiens after the Molson family regained control of the famed National Hockey League franchise from George Gillett and he took over the presidency in 2011.

With Molson at the helm, there is probably no better figure to assume responsibility for Montreal’s sporting pride. “The Molson

family has been involved with

the Montreal Canadiens since they started,” he said.

“Family ownership of the team dates back to 1957, it’s been in our blood and in our genes for 60 years. We live it and breathe it, we know it well and we care deeply about it.”

Molson knows he is carrying a name that has an enormous history in Montreal and has continuing responsibilities within the community.

Whether it is the John Molson School of Business or the Montreal General Hospital, the Molson family has funded some of the key institutions in Montreal over the past two centuries.

“It’s my responsibility to give back to the community in as many ways as possible, to be active and build new things,” he said.

“John Molson not only opened a brewery, he built the community in Montreal. To drive through this city and see everything my ancestors have given back to this community is a great source of pride.”

The most recent local Molson family project has allowed first-class ice hockey rinks to be built in underprivileged

neighbourhoods around Montreal. It is hoped that the initiative will allow

everyone to have an opportunity to enjoy ‘Canada’s game’ and become involved in the Montreal Canadiens organisation.

“The fans are so important. The feeling you get from fans is amazing… when you’re doing well,” Molson joked. “They provide so much feedback. I use it, I believe in it and it certainly doesn’t go unused.”

Recently, Molson hired Marc Bergevin for the position of General Manager after the Canadiens finished last in the Eastern Conference in one of their most disappointing seasons in their long history. Although the decision was ultimately his, he admitted that fan feedback played a crucial role during the latest selection process.

“My Twitter account was bombarded with hundreds and hundreds of opinions from fans about who I should hire,” he said.

“When I was a kid, all I could do as a fan was pick up the newspaper and check the score. But now the fans can talk and I’m certainly listening.”

Today Molson has seen his childhood dream come true – running his favourite hockey team and having an important role in his family’s business.

However, it isn’t all work. Since returning to Montreal, he has had four kids with his wife, Kate, and outside of the office he continues to enjoy the features the city and region have to offer.

So what is his favourite pastime? It helps that he is able to do it with his whole family and also that it is an enormous part of his working life.

“I just love to watch a good old hockey game,” he said.

a few years ago you were given Earth, Wind and Fire at SportAccord Convention – tonight the Québec City

Convention’s organisers will endeavour to go one better!

Air, earth, fire and water will be the theme of this evening’s Closing Ceremony at Château Frontenac, the famous Québec City hotel.

Life’s four elements will be reflected in the cuisine available to delegates at the event, which starts at 7.30pm.

Earth will be represented by cheese and meat, fire by a variety of international meat dishes

ranging from Indian brochettes to spicy beef, air by the dessert menu, which will include macaroons, and water by seafood – and alcoholic drinks.

To add to the ambience, the band Better 4 Dinner will be playing background music.

“The décor will also favour the four elements and it will be very colourful,” said Jean Prince, the host hotel’s Joint Director of Banquets.

Following the conclusion of the event at 10pm, the hotel’s After Hours Lounge Bar will be open for more drinks and networking until 1am.

Convention closes to the elements!
