Winning a KO isa family affair

The Caseys – mother, dad and two sons — wonBracket 4 of yesterday’s Knockout Teams. Thatwas great, but what was even better was the factthat Mother, Joan Casey, became a Life Master inthe process.

She was playing with her son Kevin of NewYork City while Dad, Jack Casey, was partnered byhis son Sean of Green Brook NJ. Mother and Dadlive in Venice FL, so the family practically neverhas a chance to play as a team.

Not surprisingly, the sons learned to playbridge at home while they were growing up. Thefirst Life Master in the family was Kevin. Dad ishoping to become a Life Master today – he’s onepoint short. “It should be easy,” he said. “I’m goingto be playing with a Life Master.”

The spade opening lead went to the king, andSam Lev set up clubs by cashing the ace andleading another. Barry Piafsky found the bestreturn – the ♦Q. Lev won this and led the ♥J,covered by the queen and won with dummy’sace. Lev then ran his black suit tricks. Barry sawthat he was going to be endplayed in hearts if heheld onto his ace, so he threw it away on the lastblack trick.

When Lev exited with his ♦2, Don Piafskywent up with his jack just in case his partner had the10. Dan then pushed a heart threw dummy, settingup Barry’s ♥10 for the third defensive trick, a veryfine result for the defense.

Trojan Horse CoupA strange thing happened on this deal Sunday

evening. Don Rumelhart failed to follow suit at onepoint and wound up with a penalty card when hediscovered he could follow suit after all.

Zeke Jabbour, West, led the ♥7 (third and fifth-best leads), to Rumelhart’s king. Rumelhartswitched to the ♣2, and declarer went up with theace since the 2 looked like a singleton. Declarercashed the ♠A and ruffed a heart. Now declarer ledanother spade and Rumelhart played the ♦2, anencouraging card for diamonds. Then he realized hestill had a trump, so he played it and his diamondbecame a penalty card.

Declarer immediately took advantage of this, lead-ing to the ♦Q, which had to win since East had to playthe penalty card. Declarer called for the ♣10 whichWest ducked. Next came the ♦Aand another diamond, ruffed with the 5 and overruffed with the 9. Westcashed his ♣K and led a heart. Declarer was forced toruff and still had the ♦9 in his hand. He went down onewhen East took a trick with his ♦10.

So declarer was given an extra trick whenRumelhart had a penalty card, but instead of losingone diamond trick, he lost two – the ruffing trickand the 10. Don’t look gift horses in the mouth!

Valuable overtrickJeff Aker found a nice play in the first final ses-

sion of the Silodor Open Pairs I. In his 3♥ contract,he stole an overtrick. There was a defense, bit it’svery difficult to find.

West took two top diamonds and led a thirdround, ruffed with the 9, a good idea sinceWest now did not know the location of the♥8. East pitched an encouraging spade andAker led a club to the king and ace. West fellfor the bait – he returned a fourth diamond.Aker ruffed with the 7, cashed the ♠A, thenran his trumps, using the ♠9 to squeeze Eastfor a valuable overtrick.

West could have done better by playing aclub rather than a diamond – though a spade istempting but equally fatal. East could havepitched a small trump under the ♥9 to make itclear that no trump promotion was possible.West would then have had to find the club shift– but maybe he wouldn’t. But if he didn’t, Eastwould have known whom to blame!

Down 900 at 1NTTournament Director Charley

MacCracken went to a table to check ascore ticket. The contract was 1NT andthe score was minus 900 – down nine. The folks at the table told him theycould have held it to down eight if theyhad taken a different position in thediamond suit.

“Next round – all move”The call was made in an 11-table side game,

and the two East-West players at Table 11 moved toTable 12. After a couple of minutes, director JeffAlexander noticed them and said, “Ladies, there isno Table 12 in this game.”

The ladies thanked him and moved on to Table 13.

New pre-Alert/Disclosure forms

If your partnership plays pre-Alertable Mid-Chart or Super-Chart opening bids or overcalls inevents which permit such methods, you must fillout one of the new pre-Alert/Disclosure forms foreach such method that you play and make themavailable to your opponents before the start of eachround or match segment.

This applies to any event, NABC+ or regional, which permits Mid-Chart or Super-Chart methods.Look for the light blue forms on the tables whereconvention cards and pencils are located.

When you’re between jobs in a recession withno job openings available in your field, and youhave bills to pay and mouths to feed, you do whatyou have to do. You forget about pride, dignity andstatus. You focus on need and move ahead. Sowhen my neighbor called, knowing my currentemployment situation, alerting me to the need forcaddies at the Fall North American BridgeChampionships in Phoenix, it seemed like a reason-able way to make some cash. “But I don’t knowanything about bridge,” I said.

“That’s the beauty of it,” she replied. “Allyou’ll have to do is pick up scorecards and bringthem to the front of the room. It’s easy. If I weren’tgoing to be playing bridge, I’d do it myself! Plus, you can network. You never know who you’ll meetthere. Bill Gates was at one of the bridge champi-onships last year!”

The idea of making money while networkingwas appealing, so I called the local representativeand signed up for as many sessions as they neededme. The gentleman I spoke with seemed to be veryhappy to have an adult willing to caddy, especiallyconsidering my open availability. He told me todress comfortably and arrive around noon the nextday for orientation at the Civic Center in downtownPhoenix.

CADDYING 101Arriving earlier than necessary, I found myself

among a few adults and many teens in the CaddyRoom. The teens in the room were discussing howthey would spend their money. One was saving fora cell phone. Another was saving for a computerfor college. Some were just going to buy them-selves video games or clothes. It seemed inappro-priate to say I was going to use my money for gro-ceries or to pay my son’s college tuition or pay mymortgage.

Then the Caddy Master arrived and quicklywalked us through the Phoenix Civic Center, show-ing us where various games would be played. Tome, they all sounded like alien fast food: Swiss,

Knockouts, Stratified Pairs, BAM and Reisinger. Then the Caddy Master appointed several in

the group who had caddied before to show the restof us how it was done. My group leader was a girlin her early twenties whose father was a pro andwho had been a caddy many times. Within a fewminutes, we were each completely trained andgiven a section of tables.

During the first session, I was given one sectionin a pairs competition. It amounted to a dozen anda half tables. My assignment was to first pick upregistration forms. Then I had to go around thetables and retrieve scorecards and give them to adirector sitting at the computer table in the center ofthe room. I was told to make sure I held the cardsclose to my body so players couldn’t see them. Iwas also told not to disturb the players because theywere concentrating on the game.

Unfortunately, there were a few things thatmade this difficult.

First, some players were playing Hide theScorecard. The scorecards weren’t on the edge ofthe table with a corner folded up or protruding fromthe seam in the table. Instead the bridge players

were hiding the scorecards under the table pad ofthe same color, dropping them on the floor or plac-ing them in the bid box.

Without X-ray vision and ESP, it was impossi-ble to locate the scorecard. Sometimes the playersput their own papers on top of the scorecard, com-pletely burying it from view. Regardless, I stood bythe table quietly until someone noticed me. I quiet-ly asked for the scorecard from the previous round.

The players rearranged their belongings to findwhere the scorecard was buried and pushed it in mydirection. I said a quiet “thank you” and proceededto the next table, but I knew in my heart that theseplayers were playing a game with me, and I wasimpressed with the creativity it involved. I thinkbridge players score extra points for clevernesswhen they play Hide the Scorecard.

Another thing that made this difficult wasanother game called Bridge Table Obstacle Course. With the tables close together, it was often difficultto move from one table to another without disturb-ing the players. Often I had to walk several rowsover and then come several rows back just to get tothe next table. This was especially true when therewere observers watching the game.

I found myself having to climb over severalpeople, just to gain access to the table. There wasoften trash, beverages and personal belongings onthe floor next to each player, so it was a major proj-ect getting through the obstacle course to get themuch-needed scorecard. I tried my best to do thiswithout disturbing the players’ concentration.

I decided that this was also part of the scoringprocess in the game of bridge. The more climbingand squeezing a caddy has to do, the more points ateam scores. In my section, they were scoring a lotof points!

When my shift was over, I had time to havesome dinner and sit, something I hadn’t done forseveral hours. Instead, I sat in the Caddy Roomwith my feet up on a chair and practiced shufflingcards. I’ve never been able to do this, and now withsome free time and a lot of decks available for prac-tice, I decided to gain control of my manual dexter-ity and learn to shuffle.

A PROMOTION OF SORTSWhen the evening shift began, I was given a

promotion. I now had two sections of tables! Thetime went more quickly with two sections, andbefore I knew it, 13 rounds were over and it wastime to deliver the final set of cards to the comput-er table. I was also told to collect the boards and

box them, collect the table pads and collect theunused score cards. By midnight I was on my wayhome.

On the second day, the Caddy Master movedme to the Hyatt Hotel across the street from thePhoenix Civic Center. This was where the proswere playing. The Caddy Master told me the car-pet was thicker there and easier on the feet, and shereserved this assignment for the adults. She alsomentioned that they preferred adults in this venue.I was grateful for this and eager to see what the proswere like.

I also had my eye out for Bill Gates and otherfamous bridge players. Perhaps one would be theowner of a publishing company, would fall in lovewith my marvelous wit or my ability to maneuvermy body through a tangle of chairs and bridgetables, and would publish my book.

One obvious difference with the pros was thenumber of observers at each table. I felt a certainamount of pride that I was able to help the teamsscore points while I carefully climbed over theseobservers while playing Bridge Table ObstacleCourse.

For the next ten days I caddied to namelessfaces who scored extra points by hiding the score-card and watching me maneuver through the bridgetable obstacle course. On occasion, when thereweren’t enough caddies, I was sent back to theCivic Center, often getting three large sections oftables instead of one or two. I was doing such agood job at this that I was doing the job of two cad-dies. In my head, I was referring to myself as SuperCaddy. I was more powerful than a locomotive andI was able to leap three bridge tables in a singlebound. I was also getting pretty good at shufflingcards.

BRIDGING THE GAPMy days as a caddy were educational and

thought provoking. In my life, I have observedcompetition on many levels. I have seen it in aca-demia, in the workplace and in professional sports, but none of these compares to bridge. Before cad-dying, I had assumed tournament bridge playersplayed friendly games of bridge and the team withthe highest score won. This was more true at thenewcomer and intermediate levels than it was at thehighest levels of competition.

I was immensely surprised that such a largegroup of people with so much in common wouldn’thave more socialization. Some barely acknowl-edged each other while playing the game. Fromearly in the morning to late at night, all I’d hearwould be things like, “Why did you lead a dia-mond?” and “You shouldn’t have played that acewhen you did.” I didn’t hear, “How are your grand-

kids?” or “Where do you want to eat dinner?” or“Would you like to come see the Grand Canyonwith us?” It was cards, cards and more cards. Andthat’s okay, except many of the conversations weremore angry than conversational. I looked at mar-ried couples vacationing together, playing a gamethey both loved, yet they were angry with eachother about how the cards were played.

When asked if I would ever try to learn bridgewith my husband, my answer was simple: “Wehave enough to fight about without adding bridge tothe formula. I’d rather fight over the remote con-trol or the blanket.”

I am envious of the ability of bridge playersto focus so intently on a game. My writingrequires similar concentration and discipline,

and although I have been known to write forhours and be a million miles away, I have neverbeen quite as obsessed as some of the moreintense players who would play for two or threesessions in a row.

I’m also amazed at their ability to recall whatwas in each hand and how the cards were played.I’m lucky if I can remember what was on the gro-cery list when I accidentally leave it at home beforegoing to the supermarket.

As far as individual players are concerned, I didhave the opportunity to talk to a few players whowere willing to share details of their bridge liveswith me and help me understand it better.

One gentleman told me a story about playingbridge with five shipmates during World War II.He said it was the happiest time he spent in the war. However, during the war, three in the group weretransferred to another location and the bridgeceased because they could never find players to fillthe empty seats.

A wife of one director told me about how sheand her husband took several months to tour thewestern states in the United States together, break-ing it up with tournaments where he was a directorand she played or caddied.

When I asked a director about all of the arguingbetween partners, he pointed out one couple to me.She was at one table and he was at another. “Theynever play together because when they do, theyfight too much,” I was told. “It was written in theirpre-nuptials.”

A very nice gentleman told me about the cruis-es he goes on where he and his wife teach bridge. They get to teach, play and see the world.

One lovely woman who finished playing earli-er than the other teams told me that her team wasmade up of people she had met on the Internet. They had decided it was time to meet and playbridge together in the same room.

Unfortunately, more of the players didn’ttalk to me than those who did. To most of theplayers, I was invisible. I’m chatty by natureand love talking to people who can tell methings I know nothing about. In the bridge cir-cuit, with people from all over the world, thiswould have given me an endless variety of anec-dotes and information, but it wasn’t going tohappen. To the few who did talk to me, thankyou. To the others, that’s okay. I know you wereenmeshed in thought about the game.

For me, it was an interesting week. No, I did-n’t get to meet Bill Gates or network with potentialpublishers, but I did learn about a world of which Iknew nothing. And I finally learned how to shufflea deck of cards.

(1) Strong and artificial.(2) Natural and game forcing.West started with a low heart, which ran to the

6, 7 and 10. Wold played a club to the king, thenback to the ace and ruffed a club, pleased to see thesuit split favorably for him. He ruffed a diamond tohand and cashed the top hearts, stopping to assessthe information at hand.

The auction clearly indicated at least six spadesin the West hand, and West had already followed totwo hearts, three clubs and a diamond. It seemedvery likely that West’s shape was 6-2-2-3. Takingadvantage of the ♠9 in dummy, Wold exited with alow spade away from his king.

West couldn’t afford to duck. If he did, Woldwould win the ♠9 in dummy and ruff a diamond, establishing the king. He could then play club win-ners, and East would be stuck. If he ruffed in, hewould have to lead into dummy’s diamond tenace, allowing Wold to shed his two spades. If Eastrefused to ruff, Wold would make 11 tricks with sixtrump tricks, four clubs and the ♠9.

In practice, West won the ♠10 and was dulyendplayed, left with only spades and the ♦A.Whatever West did, Wold was home. If Westcashed the ♠A, the ♠K would be Wold’s 10th trick. If West played his singleton ♦A, Wold would ruffand play club winners, and East would face thesame dilemma as before.

Note that if dummy’s spades did not include the9, West could duck and allow East to gain the lead,at which point he could pick up Wold’s last heart bycashing the queen and continue with a diamond. The defense would then prevail with a trump trick, two spades and the ♦A.

Plus 620 was good for a 10-IMP gain sinceNorth-South at the other table played a partscore.

Jonathan Sudler, bell captain here at theMarriott, is so intrigued by what he sees goingon with bridge players that he wants to learnthe game. He mentioned this to Jerry Craigewho immediately gave him a copy of the ACBLpamphlet, Learn to Play Bridge. Craige alsotold Sudler how to access the ACBL websiteon his computer. Craige also was approachedby one of the hotel maids, and he gave her thesame information.

Rules for being agood partner

I have always believed that your attitudetoward your partner is as important as your techni-cal skill at the game. – Rixi Markus, one of the all-time great players.

Before you sit down to discuss what you areplaying, you should start your partnership off on theright note. Half the battle of winning is being agood partner. Always observe the following:

1. Do not give lessons – unless you are beingpaid to do so. According to an evening paper, thereare only five real authorities on bridge in this coun-try. Odd how often one gets one of them as a part-ner. Punch (British magazine).

2. Never say anything to your partner unlessyou would want him to say the same to you. If youare unsure whether your partner would want you tosay something, don’t.

3. Never “result” (criticize your partner for anormal action just because it did not work thistime).

4. Unless your intent is to clear up a misunder-standing, avoid discussing the hand just played. Ifyou cannot resist, be discreet.

5. Remember that you and your partner are onthe same side.

6. Do not forget that your partner wants to winjust as much as you do.

7. If you feel the urge to be nasty, sarcastic, crit-ical or loud – excuse yourself and take a walk.

8. When there is time between hands, do notdiscuss bridge.

9. When you want to consult another playerabout a disaster, ask about your hand, not your part-ner’s.

10. Do not ever criticize or embarrass yourpartner in front of others.

11. Remember that bridge is only a card game.Re-printed, with permission, from Marty

They play most of their bridge on OKbridge, but occasionally they get away to a regional.

The North American Bridge Foundation, head-ed by G.S. Jade Barrett, is the organization that setsup sponsorships. Schuler let it be known that shewould like to sponsor two girls, and the foundationset her up with Lindsay and Lisa.

Schuler is a strong believer in supporting youthbridge. She points out that the average age of anACBL member is more than 67 years, so it’s impor-tant to focus on young people. “I challenge allmembers of the ACBL to help in this project,” shesaid emphatically.

Have you ever tried to imagine the perfect sce-nario for a romantic bridge player? Maybe it shouldstart with sun-kissed beaches washed by clear bluesea. As a necessity, you will need a playing sched-ule that leaves the evenings free for an alfresco can-dle-lit dinner. This should be followed by a latenight walk with the partner of your dreams to sit onthe rocks in the company of the stars and the gentleroar of the ocean.

You can be forgiven for imagining that no suchplace exists, but you would be wrong!

This year, from June 14 to 28. the FrenchRiviera resort of Menton will play host to the firstEuropean Open Bridge Championships.

Menton, easily accessible by air via Nice, railand road, is a picture postcard resort with gloriousbeaches, diverse restaurants and prices to suit everypocket. If lady luck is smiling on you, a visit to thecasino might be in order, either in Menton itself, orperhaps to the one frequently favored by JamesBond in Monaco, just a few minutes drive away. There is bound to be time to explore the pedestrian-ized shopping center of Nice – the adventurous canfollow the route of the Monte Carlo Rally and drivealong the Grand Corniche – and the famous ItalianVintimilla Market is close by across the border.

The wide range of events, all of which aretransnational, comprise Mixed Pairs and Teams,Women’s Pairs and Teams, Men’s Pairs and Teamsand Senior (over 55) Pairs and Teams. Play willtake place in the magnificent Palais de l’Europe, which was the venue for the 1993 EuropeanChampionships.

I can vouch for the accuracy of my openingparagraph because I was in Menton in 1993. If mymemory serves, I won a prize for reporting this dealin the Daily Bulletin:

There are sure to be many such moments thisyear.

Many North Americans have already decidedto contest these Championships, including the RoseMeltzer-led reigning Bermuda Bowl Champions. Ifyou need a vacation, look no further!

No matter how you try to tell the tale, in theend, in order to fully appreciate it, you have to bethere. And therein lies the message. When the timecomes to play the main event, when you participate, the opportunity for the thrill of victory and theagony of defeat lurks behind every event, everydeal, every bid and play. After playing in hundredsof tournaments from the local club to the worldchampionship, where else, I ask, can one experi-ence so many highs and lows and reversals of for-tune than at the scene?

When I started to recount a memorable tourna-ment from my own experience, I could think ofmany, but none has the potential of this one. Thinkabout it for a minute.

dicts that when the total purse for Bridge Pro Tourevents climbs to $1 million annually, high schoolsand colleges will be teaching bridge – and more andmore young people will be learning the intricaciesof endplays, squeezes and Key Card Blackwood.

“Society is practical,” says King, who has fewpeers as a promoter. “And so are young people. Ifthey see they can make money at bridge, they willstart playing.”

Right now, King says, the money in bridge ismore or less “under the table” – it’s pretty much asecret what the top pros earn. With cash prizes, everyone knows what the top players take home, and bridge will be more understandable to the gen-eral public.

King notes that the first Bridge Pro Tour drew218 total participants. Last year, 376 players tookpart in the tournaments, run as individuals. Thisyear, he says, there will be 1200 participants.

The pro tour is growing so fast, King says, because public perception of the events haschanged.

Plans for next year, he says, include three four-session events – one at each NABC – for invitedprofessionals with total purses of $50,000 perevent.

King and Bob Hamman are also working on abridge show for ESPN. A pilot has been completed, and King and Hamman are working on findingsponsors for the pro league.

Everything is coming together, King says, witha bottom line for the ACBL that no one would havebelieved a couple of years ago.

“The impact will be monumental,” says King.

Marius Kielbowiczof Philadelphia andFaith Delehanty ofRochester NY, win-ners of their flightin the Saturdayafternoon newcom-er game, each werepresented with abook authored byDorothy Truscott(front). The presen-tation was made byACBL President AlLevy. Truscottautographed eachbook.

Philadelphia’s bridge history is dominated bylegendary figures of the game – Helen Sobel Smith,Charles Goren, John Crawford, Olive Peterson,Sidney Silodor and B. Jay Becker. Here’s a look atSally Young (1906-1970), reprinted fromChampionship Bridge by J. Patrick Dune andAlbert A. Ostrow.

It was an important Philadelphia bridge tourna-ment. The director called the change, and a coupleof men – one of them a big burly fellow with a con-fident air and the other a quiet little chap – cameover to the table where a honey-haired, slightwoman was waiting with her partner. The little fel-low greeted the others, introduced his partner andplay got under way.

The first of the three boards went normally. Onthe second one the honey-haired woman made afine lead against her big opponent who was playingas declarer, and the latter’s brow knotted up andstayed that way for the rest of a suddenly compli-cated hand.

On the third board, the honey-haired womanengaged in a bidding contest, single-handed,against both opponents. When she got to 4♠, thebig fellow fairly leaped out of his chair to double. The contract was fulfilled with a minimum of trou-ble.

The little fellow shook his head sadly and, inthe tone of a man revealing the facts of life, addressed his partner thusly: “In this game, somepeople belong to be doubled and some do not. If Iwere on lead with Sally Young playing a 6♥ con-tract and I held the ace and king of trump both, Imight consider doubling. I only might, you under-stand. Now let’s move on to the next table.”

Sally Young of Narberth PA was Life Master#17 – the first woman to earn Life Master statusand a top competitor in open and women’s events.

She is the only woman to “three-peat” in theReisinger Board-a-Match Teams. Young teamedwith John Crawford, Charles Goren and CharlesSolomon to win the event in 1937 and 1938. Thequartet added B. Jay Becker and won again in 1939.

Young also won the Reisinger in 1947. Her team-mates were Jane Jaeger, Kay Rhodes and Paula Ribner— the foursome actually tied two other teams for thetitle. They remain the only all-women’s team ever towin a major open team championship.

Young — short, freckled-faced, her blue eyesusually hidden by her trademark sunglasses — wasa member of the Philadelphia invasion that hit themajor tournaments in 1937 with stunning force:early victories came in the Reisinger and theWomen’s Teams. Partnered by Helen Sobel Smith, she won the Women’s Pairs in 1938 and 1939. Thetwo led the 1938 field by such a large margin thatOswald Jacoby commented they had nearly come

over into the men’s section and walked off with thattoo.

Between 1937 and 1958, Young set a record bywinning the Women’s Teams seven times – includ-ing four consecutive years: 1943, 1944, 1945 and1946 with teammates Emily Folline, Smith andMargaret Wagar – and finishing second three times.

Among her other successes were four wins inthe Women’s Pairs, five wins in the Mixed Teamsand one win each in the Fall Open Pairs (the fore-runner of the Blue Ribbon Pairs) and the MixedPairs.

1939 was a banner year for Young. She was amember of three championship combinations(Women’s Pairs, Women’s Teams and Reisinger)and played on a team that finished second in anoth-er of the 11 major national events. Hers was themost outstanding tournament record of 1939 andgave her a reasonable claim to the title of “Player ofthe Year.”

Young’s biggest fan, however, was her son,Ralph C. Young Jr., and her favorite bridge storyfeatured the youngster.

When he was 12, the junior Young was visitinga chum and stayed on for dinner. The woman of thehousehold had a reputation as a superlative cookand throughout dinner, the young guest listened toeulogies of her culinary art.

Finally, unable to contain himself any longer,he turned to his chum and blurted out, “Yes, but,Dickie, how many masterpoints has your mothergot?”

Here’s an example of Young’s declarer expert-ise:

West led the ♠7 and Young (South) took stock. She played dummy’s ♠J and East won his ace, thenshifted to the ♣3.

Now Young’s decision was whether to risk the50-50 finesse or try to set up a long spade which –with the ♦A K – would give her pitches for her

three losing clubs.Since a 4-2 spade break was the most likely

split, Young decided to play for this percentage.Accordingly, at trick two, she won the ♣A and

played a spade to dummy’s king. She ruffed a spade– sure enough, they split 4-2, and played a heart dodummy’s queen.

Another spade ruff set up the fifth spade andYoung played a heart to dummy’s ace. When thesuit split 2-2, she was able to pitch her three losingclubs and claim plus 1430.

“I don’t know of anyone in St. Louis or any-where else who deserves a national championshipmore than Roger,” said Popkin. “He played bril-liantly, and I was lucky to be on the other side of thetable.”

Said Lord: “I think he’s overdoing it.”Later on, Lord said of Popkin: “Alan’s

demeanor and competitiveness were the reason wewon. Even if we had three bad boards in a row, henever got aggravated at himself or me. He neverstopped trying.”

With a round to go, a once-substantial lead forLord and Popkin had shrunk to less than half aboard. It was even smaller as TD GuillermoPoplawsky entered two late boards before runningthe final totals. Popkin wasn’t even in the room, buthis wife, Nancy, was sweating bullets waiting forthe final score to come out. She let out a whoop ofjoy when the winners were revealed, and whenAlan returned to the playing area, he said, “Thatwasn’t me!”

Lord and Popkin dedicated their win to GarrettNash, a former national champion from St. Louiswho died at the age of 79. Said Popkin: “Garrettsaid he would never be old enough to play in aSenior Pairs.”

On this deal from the last round of the event,Popkin made a deceptive play at trick one that paidoff handsomely later on.

self on the wrong side of a succession of doublesagainst the team captained by Norman Beck ofDallas. If Schaeffer doubled, the opponents madeit. If he was doubled, he went down. Finally he tookall the red cards out of his bidding box and handedthem to Beck.

Philadelphia’s bridge history is dominated bylegendary figures of the game – Helen Sobel Smith,Charles Goren, John Crawford, Olive Peterson,Sidney Silodor and B. Jay Becker.

B. Jay Becker always claimed he didn’tremember how the nickname, “MisterBecker,” originated but the Bridge Bulletinreported in 1958 that it had unearthed theexplanation.

Becker was a protege of P. Hal Sims andin one of his first appearances as Sims’ part-ner, the Asbury Park Convention Hall sudden-ly echoed with an anguished bellow: “Becker,

you so-and- so,” roared Sims, “why didn’tyou return my suit?”

When calm was restored, Becker quietly toldSims that if they were to have a good partnership,he would have to be treated with the same respectthat Sims himself expected.

Three rounds later, Becker again decided toshift and Sims erupted again. This time, however,Sims proved that he had taken his partner’s wishesto heart. “Mister Becker, you so-and-so,” he roared,“why didn’t you ...?”

The appellation stuck. At a victory party afterhis team won the 1981 Vanderbilt, a young woman

addressed the then 76-year-old champion by hisnickname. “My dear,” Becker interrupted, “I’mreally not sure you know me well enough to call meMister Becker.”

The 1981 Vanderbilt final pitted the Beckersquad (B. Jay Becker, Edgar Kaplan, Norman Kay,Mike Becker and Ron Rubin) against the Aces (IraCorn, non-playing captain; Bob Hamman, BobbyWolff, Fred Hamilton, Ira Rubin, Alan Sontag andPeter Weichsel). This key deal was reported byKaplan in The Bridge World.

“In both rooms, West’s opening lead was aclub. Declarer at the second table immediatelycashed his clubs, throwing his diamond. He nolonger had four top losers, but he was unable tounload all his low spades – he was lucky to escapefor down one.

“At the other table, Mr. Becker saw the futilityof the straightforward approach and embarked on acampaign of obfuscation. He won the club indummy and, ignoring his diamond loser, led atrump from dummy – as if his only care was to pre-vent East from getting spade ruffs.

“East would have none of that, of course; hehopped up with the ♥A and switched to the ♠10.Declarer ducked completely, as if anxious to leaveEast on lead. But West was not born yesterday – heovertook with the queen, cashed the ♠A and led athird round of spades (there was no point in tryingto cash the ♦A, since obviously declarer wouldhave pitched a diamond on dummy’s clubs long agoif he had a loser there).

“Mr. Becker ruffed the third spade withdummy’s king, draw trumps and claimed. Plus 420and 10 IMPs.”

That’s Mister Becker

A family affairA brother-sister pair played against a father-son

pair in one of the Vanderbilt matches yesterday.Robert and Heidi Hickes, who have been bridgepartners for 35 years, opposed Mike Moss and hisson Brad.

Back when their mother and dad were stillplaying, Robert and Heidi used to join them inSwiss Team games in the Montana area. “We wonour share of them,” said Robert.
