Learning theories have implications

in learning spaces …

(Brown, 2005)

Traditonal paradigm -Teaching vs

Constructivist paradigm-Learning

Determinants to 21st century learning spaces…

Memorization vs understandingRecall vs discovery

One size fits all vs tailored; option richTalent via weeding out vs talent cultivated

Repetition vs transfer and constructionAcquisition of facts vs facts + conceptual

frameworkTransmission vs constructionFixed roles vs mobile roles

Fixed classrooms vs mobile convertible classrooms

Single location vs plurality of locations & space types

Isolated facts vs organized conceptual schemes

“let’s try to imagine what these new spaces might look like and how students would function in them . Creating scenarios help define functions, usage practices and design goals.” (Brown, 2005)

Page 8: New learning environments 21st century learning spaces

Consider these three scenarios ,They all provide:Active vocabularyUpdated information Connections - connectivity Transition from one learning mode to another.“Opportunities for pioonering and cultivating new teaching and learning practices” (Brown, 2005)Community involvementBut how???

Page 9: New learning environments 21st century learning spaces

Well … through the design proposals of possible indoors, outdoors, physical, virtual , or blended scenarios where learning can take place. Spaces for anyone, anywhere, spaces for 21st century learners

In modern learning spaces…

“The design and flow of content and interaction takes place for the student,

who controls the access to course content and instructional choice” (Reinhard, 2009 )

• There is always space to think and share enhancing community and creativity.

Learning spaces design: Conceives multipurpose spaces for integrated communication,

collaboration, and computing technologies; the basis for learning spaces to morph.

Innovates the uses of space and technology enabling teaching-learning tasks, leading to more effective learning.

Focuses on ”how learner expectations influence the development and use of space, the principles and activities that facilitate learning, and the role of technology from the perspective of those who create learning environments”. (Brown, 2005)

“The design of learning spaces goes beyond the physical to include the virtual. Educators, technologists, and space planners are combining technology, pedagogy, learning science, and virtual and physical spaces. They are trying to answer questions such as: What types of activities lead to learning?” (Reinhard, 2009). They use a mixed areas tool box for forming or conceiving whether a classroom, a laboratory, a library, or an informal space with a main objective: to enhance learning.

our role“Teachers are a fundamental part of the process”

(Reinard, 2009) of making learners and learning more successful by becoming learning spaces designers for formal and informal learning.

Page 14: New learning environments 21st century learning spaces

Learning Space Designer’s mission is :Making physical and virtual spaces that work out traits, principles and applications for a functional learning space such as:
