GATHERING THOUGHT
Christians should never profess blind loyalty to a party. Any party. But they should engage with politics, because politics inform policies which impact people.

ORDER FOR THE WORSHIP OF GOD
October 18, 2020 9:45 A.M.
PRELUDE Hymn of Christian Joy Young
WELCOME (Please fill out the guest book form online.)
CHORAL INTROIT This Is The Day Courtney
This is the day the Lord hath made and I will be exceeding glad.
This is the day the Lord hath made and I will be exceeding glad.
CALL TO WORSHIP: (from Psalm 24)
Leader: The earth is the LORD’s and all that is in it, the world,
and those who live in it;
People: For God has founded it on the seas, and established
it on the rivers.
Leader: Who shall ascend the hill of the LORD? And who shall
stand in His holy place?
People: Those who have clean hands and pure hearts, who do
not lift up their souls to what is false, and do not
swear deceitfully. Let us worship the LORD our God!
HYMN #2 Come, Thou Almighty King
UNISON PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Merciful God, in Your gracious presence we confess our sin and
the sin of this world. Although Christ is among us as our peace,
we are a people divided against ourselves as we cling to the
values of a broken world. The profit and pleasures we pursue lay
waste the land and pollute the seas. The fears and jealousies that
we harbor set neighbor against neighbor and nation against
nation. We abuse Your good gifts of imagination and freedom,
of intellect and reason, and turn them into bonds of oppression.
Lord, have mercy upon us; heal and forgive us. Set us free to
serve You in the world as agents of Your reconciling love in
Jesus Christ…..(time for us to offer silent prayers of confession.)
ASSURANCE OF PARDON
Pastor: Friends, believe the good news of the gospel.
People: In Jesus Christ we are forgiven.
RESPONSE #582 Glory to God Whose Goodness Shines on Me
APOSTLES’ CREED (please stand if able)
I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth,
and in Jesus Christ His only Son our Lord, who was conceived by
the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius
Pilate, was crucified, dead and buried; He descended into hell;
the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into
heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty;
from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I
believe in the Holy Ghost, the holy catholic church, the
communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of
the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
MOMENT FOR CHILDREN AND PASSING THE PEACE
PASTORAL PRAYER AND THE LORD’S PRAYER
……….Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name.
Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in
heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our
debts, as we forgive our debtors, and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil, for Thine is the kingdom, and the power
and the glory forever, Amen.
OFFERTORY With a Voice of Singing Shaw
With a voice of singing declare ye this, and let it be heard,
Alleluia. Declare ye this, and let it be heard, Alleluia.
Utter it even unto the ends of the earth. The Lord hath delivered
his people, Alleluia. The Lord hath delivered his people Alleluia.
O be joyful in God, all ye lands, O sing praises to the honor of
his name, make his praise to be glorious.
With a voice of singing declare ye this, and let it be heard,
Alleluia. Declare ye this, and let it be heard, Alleluia.
DOXOLOGY (please stand if able)
Praise God from whom all blessings flow. Praise Him all
creatures here below. Praise Him above ye heavenly hosts.
Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost. Amen.
UNISON PRAYER OF DEDICATION (from Feasting on the Word)
O God, all that we have comes from You. Receive this offering
and with it the offering of our lives, for we return to You only
what You have so graciously given. Use us for the sake of
Christ, in whose name we pray, AMEN.
SCRIPTURE LESSON Matthew 5: 1-12
When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain; and after he
sat down, his disciples came to him. Then he began to speak, and
taught them, saying:
“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
“Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.
“Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. “Blessed are
those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be
filled. “Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy.
“Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. “Blessed are
the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. “Blessed
are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is
the kingdom of heaven. “Blessed are you when people revile you
and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on
my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in
heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who
were before you.
Pastor: The Word of the Lord.
People: Thanks be to God.
SERMON “Faith and Politics” Eugene Cho
Today’s Sermon will be an excerpt from The Rev. Eugene Cho’s
sermon with Donegal Presbytery at our September meeting. All
four pastors and all six commissioners from Westminster felt at
least a portion of Rev. Cho’s message was worth sharing with the
congregation. Rev. Cho was pastor of a non-denominational
congregation in Seattle for many years prior to becoming the
President of Bread for the World, an international mission
partner. His recent book, “Thou Shalt Not Be A Jerk: A
Christian’s Guide to Engaging Politics,” would more fully
explore the meaning of today’s message.
