1. An organism dies. Its body may decay, but the hard parts remain.
2. The remains are covered by mud, which gets thicker and thicker.
3. The mud hardens into rock. Water and dissolved minerals drip through.
4. Minerals slowly soak into the remains, turning them to stone.
5. The remains are now a fossil. The land starts to change slowly.
6. Sometimes, the rock wears away or shifts, exposing the fossil.
