From the President Dear Fellow Rotarians,

Our first meeting for the new Rotary year saw a change of pace with a "vocational visit" to Linneys jewellers. It was very pleasant indeed to sip champagne, wine or juice and nibble on some canapes while checking out exquisite jewellery valued thousands to hundreds of thousands of dollars!

It was fascinating to learn about the diamond and pearl industries, and how what is mined  and produced here in WA differs from those in other parts of the world.

This week we resume our regular meeting program,

with Past District Governor Ian Murray speaking to us about Public Relations. This is something of relevance to all of us, regardless of which committee you are in, as you will learn many ways to promote not just our club's work but also Rotary itself to family and friends.

Debbie Cash has decided to continue as a full member of the club. We look forward to seeing more of her and Brother James very soon.

Yours in Rotary Service,

Simone Carot CollinsClub President

Books for IndiaLast Monday Rajah, Jen, Elizabeth, Ken and Tony Munday packed up the remainder of the books for Madurai.

PDG Ron Geary will collect the 20 odd cartons next Monday and when he next sends a container of goods to Visakhapatnam, India, where he and Glenyse support an Aids orphanage, he will include our books.  Transportation from Visag to

the school in Madurai will need to be arranged, however, with Ron’s kind assistance, the project will be brought to a conclusion.  Great work Rajah, Jes and all who collected, sorted and packed the books.

Charity FundWith the receipt of the Certificate of Incorporation for the RC of FB Charity Fund, Inc the next step of applying for an ABN is being handled by Rajah.  Once this has been received, Deductible Gift Recipient status will be applied for, which will provide for tax deductibility for local projects.   Once this is approved, an application will be made to expand the DGR status to international projects.   Progress is being made, which is very pleasing

Vocational Visit to Linney’s, SubiacoLast Wednesday evening 18 members and guests were warmly welcomed by Alan Linney, CEO David Fardon, other members of the Linney family, Viv Adams and staff, where we enjoyed champagne, wines, juice and canapés whilst learning a little about the jewelry industry.

A break from our traditional meetings, the vocational visit to Linney’s allowed those present to view exquisite jewelry whilst being educated about the rare pink diamonds from the Argyle mines in WA and pearls from Broome and neighbouring waters.

Nepal and Pilgrimage of HopeJames has been in Nepal, returning briefly (one full

day) before heading off to Alice Springs with 40 fathers and sons on another Pilgrimage Of Hope.

Whilst in Nepal, James was introduced to a possible project which he will tell us more about on his return from Alice Springs.

James sends his good wishes to the Club and looks forward to being at our meeting in a few weeks time.  Debbie Cash will be going up to Nepal in a few weeks, however, will be at the Club before then.  It was reported in the Bulletin that Debbie was going to move from ‘active’ membership to a ‘friend’ however she has arranged her commitments to stay as an ’active’ member.  Good news.

Our badge maker MauriceMaurice has produced a sign for the Manna ‘Kids in the Kitchen’ facility at Maddington Primary school, a photograph of the plaque was in the bulletin a few weeks back.

As a small measure of support for what Maurice considers a great project, he has sent the plaque with his compliments.    A kind and generous friend ......thank you Maurice.

Board MeetingFirst meeting of the Board for the new Rotary year will take place straight after the meeting on Wednesday 14th July.   Board meetings are scheduled for the second Wednesday of the month after the regular club meeting.

Fellowship: Sharing Ideas & Connecting People

Worldwideby Amanda Runge RI Programs DivisionPosted: 28 Jun 2010

Rotarians often cite fellowship as the reason why they joined a Rotary club. With so many diverse Rotary clubs all over the world, the opportunity for connection and collaboration is truly inspiring. One of the ways in which Rotarians can bridge continents is through the Rotary Fellowships program. Rotary Fellowships are groups of Rotarians, Rotarian spouses and Rotaractors who unite to: share a common interest in worthwhile recreational activities, further their vocational development through acquaintance with others of the same profession, make new friends around the world, explore new opportunities for service, and of course, have fun!

How can Rotary Fellowships lead to Bigger, Better, Bolder clubs? Rotary Fellowships are a great way for Rotarians to share ideas and make new friends in Rotary. By joining a fellowship, Rotarians will experience the internationality of Rotary and form relationships that are the basis of future club to club partnerships for service projects. Rotarians involved in fellowships are among the most committed of our members, and their activities increase membership retention.

R o t a r y F e l l o w s h i p s informally began in 1928 when a group of Rotarians with an interest in Esperanto (a language derived from many European languages) joined together to practice their hobby. In 1947 Rotarians organized a group of boating enthusiasts, which became the Yachting Fellowship. These activities gained more attention and operated over the years under many different names, such as World Fellowship Activities, International Vocational Contact Groups, Rotary Recreational and

Vocational Fellowships, and finally Rotary Fellowships. As of June 2010 there are 55 Board-recognized Rotary Fellowships covering all sorts of hobbies and professions, including music, doctors, and scuba diving, just to name a few. (There is even a new Rotarians On Social Networks Fellowship!)

Whether it is just for the fun of it, or to build relationships with others in your p r o f e s s i o n a l fi e l d , fellowships are a great addition to any Rotary experience. For more information on Rotary Fellowships visit visit www.rotary.org/fellowships

Historic Moments - Rotary MottoesRotary International News 7 July 2010   Rotary’s official mottoes, Service Above Self and One Profits Most Who Serves Best, trace back to the early days of the organization.

In 1911, He Profits Most Who Serves Best was approved as the Rotary motto at the second convention of the National Association of Rotary Clubs of America, in Portland, Oregon. It was adapted from a speech made by Rotarian Arthur Frederick Sheldon to the first convention, held in Chicago the previous year. Sheldon declared that "only the science of right conduct toward others pays. Business is the science of human services. He profits most who serves his fellows best."

The Portland convention also inspired the motto Service Above Self. During a convention outing on the Columbia River, Ben Collins, president of the Rotary Club of Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA, talked with Seattle Rotarian J.E. Pinkham about the proper way to organize a Rotary club, offering the principle his club had

adopted: Service, Not Self. Pinkham invited Paul P. Harris, who also was on the boat trip, to join their conversation. Harris asked Collins to address the convention, and the phrase Service, Not Self was met with great enthusiasm.

At the 1950 RI Convention in Detroit, slightly modified versions of the two slogans were formally approved as the official mottoes of Rotary: He Profits Most Who Serves Best and Service Above Self. The 1989 Council on Legislation established Service Above Self as the principal motto of Rotary, because it best conveys the philosophy of unselfish volunteer service. He Profits Most Who Serves Best was modified by the 2004 Council to   They Profit Most Who Serve Best and by the 2010 Council to its current wording, One Profits Most Who Serves Best.
