Letter From the Club PresidentDear Fellow Rotarians,

Elizabeth Bain and Bill Hassell joined Ken and me at the Official opening of Manna Industries ‘Kids in the Kitchen’ facility at Maddington Primary School last Wednesday, 21st April.

What a wonderful facility it is for the children and yet another fantastic project brought to fruition by the RC of Freshwater Bay, through a Rotary Foundation Matching Grant (MG No. 71897) supported by the RC of Arden Arcade, D. 5189, California.

Elizabeth Bain has generously offered for Embroidme to make uniforms for the Team at

Maddington Primary School. Thank you Elizabeth and Graeme. The melamine tableware donated by Roger and Celine Maston, as the club’s very first project, was used at the opening last Wednesday, along with the urn which came from Roh Siriwardena and Bethesda Hospital.

Instead of our monthly Committee meeting in May, a vocational visit has been

organised at 6.00pm on 19th May to the project at Maddington Primary School in place of our meeting at Bethesda Hospital. Please put this date in your diary, bring your partner, take a look at and feel proud of what we have brought to fruition to assist these and future youth in the M a d d i n g t o n a n d surrounding areas. Craig Anderson, the Principal will join us on the 19th, as will Bev and John Lowe, the dedicated, hardworking couple whose brainchild Manna Industries is.

Ken felt as if he’d gone back in time as the Principal Craig, Mayor of Gosnells and several others in attendance had all been long time patients during his years as a GP in Thornlie.

As we cast our minds back over the short 17 months of the Club the significance of the Rotary Foundation and its benefits are profound. We have our applicant Kylie West as a member of the outbound GSE Team to D. 1640 in Normandy, a fabulous facility for disadvantaged youth in the disused canteen at Maddington Primary School, along with funding for incubators and resuscitators for the Children’s Hospital in Lagos, Nigeria, which Ken

and I visited two years ago. Plus of course we are progressing with the Uni Focus GSE Team between Wiluna and Fiji which will be totally funded by the RF. All considered, we have received exceptional value from the Rotary Foundation, which is our Foundation for Peace. Your personal financial support of the Rotary Foundation is encouraged so that this and all the magnificent work of the Rotary Foundation can continue.

WA Chief Scientist Lyn Beazley was outstanding as always as a speaker at the District Conference last Saturday. She was in the midst of promoting our Magnifying Microscope project when she was cut short, however, those present heard from her the value of it and hopefully more clubs will roll the project out to schools in their area.

The long awaited Official Launch of the CD for the Burundi Peace Choir and Band project has been set. Details are in the body of the Bulletin.

Please remember we have the Inbound GSE Team from Normandy’s presentation next week, followed by Prof. Ralph Martins, the Aust. of the Year for WA, on 5th May, a group dinner meeting on 12th May with Past RI President Glen Kinross, followed by the visit to Manna Industries on 19th May. We need a committed effort from ALL members for ALL of these events so please treat them as number one priority and bring along your partner and friends.

Yours in Rotary Service,

Di CollinsCharter President

Manna IndustriesDuring 2009 Manna Industries supplied the community with the following:

- 53,220 meals served to the homeless in the city

- 10,400 breakfasts to hungry school kids

- 5,000 food parcels to needy families

- 330 full winter uniforms to school kids

This work relied solely on charitable contributions such as those from the Rotary Club.

Inbound GSEA great team from D 1640 in Normandy will do their presentation at our meeting next Thursday.  We will have the Hon. French Consul Michael Wood with us along with a few members of the Rotary Club of Cambridge and Matilda Bay.

RYPENChrist Church Grammar School have a student for us to sponsor for the Rotary Youth Program of Enrichment camp which will be held in May.

RYDAClive Boddy will be home from   his travels this week and with help from Bronwen Tyson (more volunteers needed) will work with Newman College on the

Rotary Youth Driver Awareness project.   This looks like being 23rd June.

District AssemblyFor the incoming Board for 2010-11 will be at the Mt Lawley High School on Sunday, 2nd May from 8.30am until 1.00pm

MembershipWould all members please give consideration to inviting, friends, neighbours, colleagues or family along to the club whom you consider would make good Rotarians.  The more active members we have in the club the less load there is on the few who have been carrying the brunt of the work load.   Also, the more active we can be both in the local and international communities.

Vocational ServiceBy Rob Rohrlach

Rotary International fosters four avenues of service:-

• Club Service• Vocational• Community• International

As a Club focussed on service and projects, the Rotary Club of Freshwater Bay endeavours to cover each of those four avenues.

The recognition of the worthiness to society of all useful occupations, not just one ‘s own or those pursued by Rotarians.

Key to our understanding of other vocations we are encouraged to leave our normal meeting room and visit other work places. When this can be combined with our community and international projects, we achieve a double benefit.

Over the next three months we will be taking at least three vocational visits.

The first of these is to support the work of ASeTTS. Professionals in this organisation provide services to people who are humanitarian entrants or are from a refugee type background and who have experienced torture or trauma in their country of origin, during their flight to Australia, or while in detention. Their work in helping the Burundi Peace Choir help their members settle in Perth has inspired many of us.

We have been invited to the Choir’s release of their first CD, one of our community service projects this year.

Like all our Club events, partners, families, potential new members and friends are invited. Just let me know numbers so we can advise ASeTTS.

The second of these visits is to Manna Industries at Maddington Primary School.

Linney’s Jeweller in Subiaco will also be a change of pace and replace one of our regular meetings.   Possibly one in early July.   More details will

follow.  Linney’s put on a very professional event with drinks, nibbles, a door prize as well as an insight into their world of pearls, gold and diamonds.

If you would like to invite the Club to your work place, please contact me.

Well done to the  30 Rotary Clubs, 3 Rotaract Clubs and our Mt Lawley Interact Club on achieving a RI  Presidential Citation. DGN Liz is to be congratulated for championing this award over the last two years.

The Metropolitan District Assembly is on Sunday, 2nd May   at Mt Lawley Senior High School. All incoming club board  members   need to attend to ensure they are updated on their roles for next year. All other interested Rotarians are also welcome.

Another event to diarise is t h e m u l t i - d i s t r i c t C h a n g e o v e r Dinner - 3rd July. Come along and say goodbye to D9450 and celebrate the launch of D9455 with RID Stuart Heal.

D G E I a n Hutton and I w i l l b e spending the n e x t f e w w e e k s c o n d u c t i n g c o u n t r y assemblies. We w e r e i n Geraldton a week ago and will be in Karratha next weekend. The

Margaret and I are travelling to the RI Convention in Montreal in June, I hope to see some of you there.

May is Australian Rotary Health month and getting near the end of the year. Time for Club's to consider their annual donations to the Rotary Foundation, Polio Plus and ARH.

Time is running out - review this year's goals and put a plan in place to achieve them.

The Rotary FoundationWeek 43: This week’s Rotary Foundation Thought is about Changing and Saving Lives.

Have you ever considered that your contribution to The Rotary Foundation may mean the difference between life and death?

Rotary Foundation Matching Grant projects have helped provide the Malawi Children’s Village (MCV) with everything from clean water, food and medications to blankets, sewing machines and a windmill.

The Rotary Club of Canandaigua, New York, USA and Chakunga Sibale, director of the MCV, founded the program in 1997 and it is

supported locally by the Rotary Club of Limbe.

“The MCV has had a very great effect to relieve the suffering of children in my country,” says Sibale.

Rotarian’s contributions to this project have literally meant the difference between life and death for many of the children in the MCV program.
