Brief:

MODERNISM

Modernism is a term used to embrace a diverse range of art movements and ideas that emerged during the first half of the 20th century and also influenced

the subsequent development of art, architecture and design.

Modernism was split into many unique movements dur-ing the early 20th century. There where movements such as: Cubism, Futurism and Surrealism - to name

just a few.

Although each movement was considered individual, they where all linked by a major key factor. This was

the use of a grid system within the various move-ments artwork. The grid system meant that the visual

aspects of the movements where designed to a set frame. The artistic movements where also influenced

by each others work.

The work is still relevent in todays Graphic Design world and all other aspects of art, design and arci-

techure.

What is modernism?

Artists:de stijl:

Herbert BayerJoost SchmidtPablo Picasso

Wassily KandinskyEmil Ruder

De Stijl:The artistic movement which started as an isolated effort to publish the ideas and images of a small

group of Dutch artists has become one of the keys to modernism.

“The Style” was a focus for wide-range invention and development in painting, architecture, furniture and

graphic design.

They advocated pure abstraction and universality by a reduction to the essentials of form and col-

our. They simplified visual compositions to vertical and horizontal angles, and used only primary colors

along with black and white.

Theo van Doesburg was the founder and leader of De Stijl. His work follows all of the movements aims

very clearly, he uses simple form and colour to cre-ate a piece of artork that is non-representational.

Theo van Doesburg:

De Stijl:

Piet Mondrian:“this new plastic idea will ignore the particulars of appearance, that is to say, natu-ral form and colour. On the contrary, it should find its expression in the abstraction of form and colour, that is to say, in the straight line and the clearly defined primary

colour.” - Piet Mondrian

Mondrian was an important contributor to the De Stijl art movement. He evolved a non-representational form which he termed Neo-Plasticism. This consisted of white ground, upon which was painted a grid of vertical and horizontal black lines and the three

primary colors.

Bauhaus:

Herbert Bayer:

Bauhaus was a school in Germany that combined crafts and the fine arts, and was famous for the ap-proach to design that it taught. The name translates to “School of Building”. Bauhaus had influenced art, architecture, graphic design, industrial design, and

typography.

Herbert Bayer created the design for Bauhaus typeface in 1925. The typeface is based on geometric shapes and sizes. Bauhaus is a san serif font meaning it does not have any lines tailing from the edges of the letters. Bauhaus is designed round by the edges giving it a

modern abstract feel to the typeface. I like how Bayer has made the typeface simplistic and futuristic.

Bayers 1925 experimental universal typeface com-bined upper and lower-case characters into a single character set. This was a fresh and groundbreaking idea for the time.

Bauhaus:Joost Schmidt:

Schmidt was a visionary typographer and graphic designer who is best known for designing the famous poster for the 1923 Bauhaus Exhibition in Weimar, Ger-

many. The poster is below.Like Bayers work, I like the modern charac-teristics in the artwork. The rounded edged and inventive typefaces give a futuristic and powerful design.

Jan Tschichold:Tschichold was a famous typographer and book de-

signer within the modernism movement.

The artist was well known in britain for re-

fashioning penguin books with his horizontally

banded covers.

After he visited the bau-haus weimar exhibition he became involved with modernist typography. ‘the new typography’ was first first major piece of published work in 1928. in the book the art-ist talks about princi-ples of design. mondrian was a great influence on tschicholds page lay-outs.

the rules which the art-ists has set for others to follow in his books are still followed by todays graphic designers.

Pablo Picasso:Picasso was a spanish painter, sculptor and print maker. he is widely known for co-founding the cubist movement, inventing constructed sculpture and the invention of collage.

the images above are his early cubism pieces. the im-ages include alot of straight lines and angles, simi-

lar to the work seen in the de stijl movement.

Wassiy Kandinsky:

Wassily Kandinsky taught a basic design class and an advanced theory class for 11 years at Bauhaus, starting 1922. During his time at Bauhaus, geometrical elements had taken an ever increasing importance within his paintings. He began to use circles, half-cir-cles, angles, straight lines and curves in his work. He characterised his development at Bauhaus in his work, Yellow - Red - Blue (1925).

Kandinsky was a very influential paint-er during the modernism movement. he is credited with painting the first purely

abstract works of art.

Emil Ruder:Ruder was a swiss typographer and graphic designer.

he was a contributing writer and editor for typo-grafische monatsblatter. he also published a basic grammer book of typography, this became a basic

text for graphic design and typography worldwide.

ruder had an opinion that the purpose of typogra-phy was to communicate

ideas with writing. he preferred an asymmetri-

cal layout with his type-faces, like most swiss

style designers.

POST MODERNISM

What is Post Modernism?Post-modernism is a body of art movements that

aimed to contradict modernism. Intermedia, instal-lation art, conceptual art and multimedia are de-

scribed as postmodern. Many characteristics which lend art to being postmodern are bricolage, the use of words prominently as the central artistic ele-

ment, collage, simplification and commonly the recy-cling of past styles and themes in a modern-day con-

text. The punk movement was a ‘big thing’ when post mod-ernism came about. Not only did it have a general global effect on culture, but the graphic design world also became influenced by the outrageous movement. It affected illustration and print with

many artists working in a ‘punk-style’. The majority of art from the punk movement can be seen with in mu-

sic covers, concert flyers and other merchandise.

With the post modernism movement came a long fall for the famous grid layout used frequently with the modernism movement. Many artists found other

ways of layering an interesting design outside of a formal grid format and preffered the outcome.

Artists:DAVID carson

Raygun magazineJamie reid

Barbara krugerneville brody

David Carson:David carson is an american graphic designer. he is

best known for his magazine designs and use of exper-imental typography. he was the art director for the

magazine, ray gun.

I really like Carsons layering of text.it gives a dark college feel to the de-

signs.

I like the combination of digital and hand rendered typography when used together in carsons designs.

Raygun Magazine:Ray Gun was an american rock & roll magazine, first published in 1992. it was led by david carson, the fa-

mous graphic designer. the magazine explored experi-mental typographic design. the result was a chaotic,

abstarts but not always readable design.

I like the fact that the magazine has no set structure. For example, the title is always differ-ent on each cover, this includes the typeface, size, colour and visibil-ity.

I like that the magazine designs break the tradi-tional boundaries that include a visible im-age of a cover model, a structured title and sub headings.

Jamie Reid:

Jamie Reid is an english artist. his work features let-tering cut from newspaper headlines in the style of a randsom note. he is a big part of the punk era/ move-ment. he is best known for the sex pistols artwork pic-tured above.

Barbara Kruger:

Kruger is an american conceptual artist. the majority of her work

consists of black and white photographs over-

laid with captions.her captions mainly ques-

tion the audience about topics such as feminism, consumerism and desire.

i like the simplicity of her designs, giving the

fact that they have make such a bold statement on

society today.

Neville Brody:Brody is an english graphic designer, typographer

and art director.

I like the Nike advert that brody has designed, lay-ering positive and negative lettering to create an interesting image. i like how he avoids any use of a

structural grid, keeping the design fresh and modern.

RESEARCH.

Mast Head Designs,Existing Mast Heads:

I have gathered various existing magazine mast head designs to examine. I have chosen a vide variety of magazine genres to look at including music, fashion, health, sports and the famous punk movement magazine, i-d.I like the partial layering of the gq logo, the

transparity of the g allows the q to been seen easily. and the rounded letters give a modern

feel.

INITIAL DESIGNS& DEVELOPMENT.

My Mast Head Designs:These are my initial sketches for my

mast head design. After looking at ex-isting mast heads i tried to create in-

teresting designs.

My Mast Head Designs:

The next step in my mast head design process is to look digitally how i can layout my design. I have kept the layouts basic thus far. not experimenting with any modern, interesting layouts.

My Mast Head Designs:I have browsed the internet for modern and interest-ing fonts to possibly use in my design from dafont.com. I really like the fonts that I have found.

I have positions the found font into intreesting lay-outs.

My Mast Head Designs:below is my my most recent mast head design. for this design i have used a basic typeface, however i have tried to make the text more interesting, modern and visually appealing. I have edited the ledding and kern-ing of the lettering to bring them closer together, creating a merged design. as i have used only the ini-tials of new graphic design on a large scale, i have incorpareted the smaller letters to make the whole words.

Above shows my development of the mast head design.

Cover Designs:

fOR MY FRONT COVER DE-SIGN I AM GOING TO USE

AN ORIGINAL IMAGE OF THE ‘BIG BEN’. I THINK THIS REP-RESENTS THE CULTURE OF

THE COUNTRY VERY WELL. I LIKE THE ANGLE AT WHICH

THE TOWER STANDS AND THE BRIGHT BLUE SKY BEHIND

THE HEAVY DARK COLOURED STONE.

I HAVE LAYERED A BASIC TRI-ANGULAR DESIGN ON TOP OF THE IMAGE WHICH I THINK GIVES A FEEL OF THE POST-MODERNISM OR PUNK MOVE-MENT. IT BECOMES DISTORTED YET STILL ELIDGABLE TO AN

AUDIENCE.

i HAVE TAKEN PART OF THE IMAGE AWAY TO DISTORT

THE DESIGN FURTHER. i HAVE ALSO REDUCED THE OPACITY OF THE ORIGINAL IMAGE TO GIVE AN AGED EFFECT. THE DESIGN NOW LOOKS VERY SUITING FOR EITHER THE

POST MODERNISM OR PUNK MOVEMENTS.

i HAVE ADDED CIRCULAR SHAPES TO THIS DESIGN AS-WELL AS THE TRIANGULAR

PATTERN, THIS ALLOWS SOME OF A DARKER CONTRASTING

IMAGE TO APPEAR IN THE BACKGROUND.

Cover Designs:tHIS IS THE COVER DESIGN IMAGE

WHICH I HAVE DECIDED TO USE ON MY MAGAZINE.

i HAVE INCORPARATED SOME MOD-ERNISM THEMES, INCLUDING DE STIJLS COLOUR SCHEME, ALOT OF STRUCTURED SHAPES AND

STRAIGHT LINES.

i HAVE ALSO TRIED TO CREATE A COLLAGE LOOK TO SHOW INFLU-

ENCE FROM THE POST MODERNISM MOVEMENTS.

i WILL ADD THE MASTHEAD, SUB HEADING AND ISSUE NUMBER TO THE COVER DESIGN WHERE AP-PROPRIATE.
