2013-2014 Classroom Placement Form If you have already filled out and turned in one of these forms from last months newsletter, thank you. If you have not, please read on. The conclusion of the school year is approaching. We need information from you to help us plan for next year. Please answer the following questions and check any that apply to you. Student’s Name______________________________________________________________________________________________ Current Teacher’s Name ______________________________________________________________________________________ □ Yes! My child will be attending West Hills next fall. □ No. My child will not be attending West Hills next fall. □ We are unsure of our plans at this time, but our best guess is: _________________________________________________________________________________________________ □ We live out of the West Hills area but we applied for “open enrollment” or “out of district” at West Hills for next fall.

Bremerton School District’s Open Enrollment Policy #3130 allows elementary students to live in one school attendance area and attend school in an-other attendance area based on approval by the building principal and the superintendent. Open enrollment is granted on space availability.

My child’s favorite subjects are: ______________________________________________________________________ My child learns best by: ____________________________________________________________________________ (seeing, hearing, or doing) Additional Comments: _______________________________________________________________________________________

__________________________________________________________________________________________________________

If you have not already returned a copy of this form to your child’s

teacher or the office, please return this form to school AS SOON AS POSSIBLE! We are beginning to plan for the 2013-2014 school year and are interested in what classroom placement parents think would be best for their child. Our staff will meet in June to begin making recommendations for class assignments. Parent responses will be one of the factors used in consid-ering your child’s needs. Please consider the classroom characteristics that best describe your child and give your responses without referring to a specific teacher by name. It is, of course, just one of the factors in building strong, positive, and balanced class lists for next school year. This process will take into account such factors as student learning styles, academic records, girl/boy ratios, behavior and peer relationships, special programs, and of course, parental input. All student assignments are temporary until our October 1 enrollment count. Increased enrollment may necessitate adding new classrooms as we have done in the past, while decreased enrollment could mean making other changes in student placements to comply with contractual agreements, as well as attrition that may impact staff assignments. With the exception of a very small percentage of children with special needs, the majority of students are well equipped to adjust to any classroom placement. The principals have final responsibility for classroom assign-ments. Temporary class lists for the 2013-2014 school year will be posted by 5PM on August 30, 2013. Our goal will be to have permanent class-room assignments made by the first week of October 2013. Please return this form to the office by Friday, June7th. Letters received after June 7th will be filed and read in late August with new enrollments.

Field day!

On Friday, June 14th we will have our

annual Field Day celebration.

K - 3rd grade students will partic-

ipate from 9:30-11:30am.

4th - 7th grade students will par-

ticipate from 1:15- 3:15pm.

Activities may include water and

getting messy. Please send your stu-

dent in play clothes (uniforms not

required) and a change of clothing to

keep in their backpacks. We are hop-

ing for sunny skies, but in case the

weather doesn’t cooperate, having an

extra set of clothes will give your

child the option to change if they

would like.

If you would like to volunteer for

field day, please contact our field

day coordinator, Michelle Bowman at

473-4675 or email at [email protected]

Skippyjon Jones by Judy Schachner

Skippyjon Jones is a tiny Siamese kitten with a giant imagination, on one hilarious

adventure after another. In Skippyjon Jones’ world of make believe, toilet paper becomes mummy bandages, the hallway is the Nile, and the living room is filled with

Los Dinosaurios.

On Friday June 14, K - 3rd students will get to see

“Skippyjon Jones” a Book-It Repertory Theatre produc-

tion provided by the VanGo Project and Pam Helm.

It is the time of year to make sure ALL

Library books have been returned to

the WH Library. Please make sure to

look in your students rooms, under

the bed, in back of the car, and in

old backpacks! Return books as

soon as you find them to your stu-

dents teacher or the library.

Team 5

Math Super hero's

Fact Master, Remainder Man, and Triangle Girl visited our school the day before the fifth grade students

took the math MSP. The super heroes visit was to inspire and remind the students that math can be fun

and they are all capable of being super. Triangle Girl was wearing the formula for the area of a triangle

which seemed to be difficult for many fifth graders to follow. The super hero capes had math problems

on them. The students who completed the cape problems were given Westies for meeting the chal-

lenge. Next year the super heroes plan on attending West Hills on a more regular schedule throughout

the year. You may also see some of their friends as well.

It was a lot of fun cheering on West Hills STEM Montessori at the parade on Saturday!

Hello West Hills S.T.E.M. Academy Families! My name is Sara Weyrick and I am your new general music and

band teacher. I have a Bachelor of Music in performance on the French horn from California State University,

Sacramento and a Master of Arts through the American Band College program at Southern Oregon State Uni-

versity. Over the years I’ve had great fun teaching some amazing beginning, middle school, and high school bands. For

the past nine years I have been the instrumental music director for Bremerton High School. One of my passions is

gardening. In a garden, flower seeds are planted and lovingly cared for until they eventually become strong plants with

colorful blooms. I always think of my band students as a sound garden. It will be so much fun to help you all become a

beautiful sound garden and to watch you bloom!

Hi, my name is Tessie Goheen and I will be joining the West Hills STEM Montessori team as the 4th/5th grade teacher. I will be graduating from Western Washington University in June with my Bachelor of Arts in Education with a

Special Education major and Elementary Education endorsement. I will also be completing my Montessori teacher certification in June from North American Montessori Center. In my spare time, I volunteer with the American Cancer

Society advocating for cancer research and patient rights. I'm looking forward to (officially) meeting everyone and am so excited to be part of the STEM Academy!

Karen Lippy has been an educator since 1981, currently as the Science Professional Development Specialist for the

Olympic Educational Service District. Karen holds a Bachelors of Science degree in Biology from Washington

State University and a Masters in Science Education from Western Washington University. She has won numer-

ous teaching and environmental awards including The Washington State Christa McAuliffe Award for Excellence,

Washington State Department of Ecology¹s Environmental Excellence Award, a 1993 Hood Canal Coordinating

Council Environmental Achievement Award, North Mason 2001 Citizen of the Year, and the 2004 Radio Shack

National Teaching Award.
