A truly exceptional art experience is in store for visitors in January, with an increased line-up of 89 regional and international exhibitors, an impressive array of 13 experiential art installations and the opportunity to meet some of the world’s most interesting artists. Spread over 6,000 square meters of state-of-the-art space, the 2017 show invites collectors and art buyers from across Asia to browse and buy original paintings, limited editions, sculpture and photography, and to participate in an enriching program of complimentary talks, tours and live painting demonstrations.

New to the 2nd edition will be Photo17 Singapore and Latin American Voices, two standout features that tap into the current pulse of the contemporary art market. With Photo17 Singapore, visitors will be able to view an impressive range of photographic works by renowned photographers such as Daido Moriyama, learn about the variety of steps involved in creating art photography and understand the increasing importance of photography as a collectable medium. Latin American Voices presents a stunning series of artworks from across the Americas, including works that draw from the long-standing artistic traditions of the region and sculptures by Pablo Atchugarry and Gustavo Vélez who both have had great success at auction at Christie’s, Sotheby’s and Phillips. “It’s going to be a spectacular show”, says Show Director Douwe Cramer, “We’ve had a more than 30% increase in exhibitors joining the 2017 show, and the range, diversity and quality of exhibitors, artists and artworks will be truly exceptional. We are very excited to present a ‘world of art’ to Singapore and our new sectors reflect the current movements in the contemporary art market. Markets fluctuate, and our goal is to move with the times and present the best artworks in a wide range of prices so that no matter how the market moves, there will always be works that fit into people’s budgets.” Cramer continues, “Photography, for example, is becoming more and more popular and sought-after by collectors, with photo-centred art fairs popping up across many Asian cities. And Latin American art may be still new to Asia, but in other parts of the world, collectors are snapping up paintings, sculptures and photography from the region. Christie’s November Latin American Art sale broke seven sales records! So, we feel confident that our show will provide collectors new ground for acquisitions, and an exciting art experience for visitors and art enthusiasts alike.” Singapore Contemporary – Photo17 Singapore and Latin American Voices

PHOTO17 SINGAPORE Debuting in January will be Photo17 Singapore, Singapore Contemporary’s curated photography sector, which will illustrate the growing importance of photography as an artistic medium and collectable art form. The pavilion will showcase works by over 30 unique artists in both gallery booths and wall space curated in four diverse yet overlapping divisions: Documentary, Fine Art, Conceptual and Mixed Media Photography. The exhibition will emphasise that photography is about more than just photo-taking, it is about photo-making. From conception to final print, the myriad processes involved make this medium highly innovative.

Daido Moriyama, Japan – Akio Nagasawa Gallery, Japan As one of Japan’s most acclaimed post-war photographers, Daido Moriyama (b.1938) has been on a fifty-year journey with an automatic camera by his side. Documenting cultural change and chaotic urban experiences, his work captures the underside of urban Japanese life along with the breakdown of traditional values and accelerated modernization experienced during the post-war period. A master of the impromptu shot, Moriyama’s style is recognised for “are, bure, boke” or “grainy, blurry and out-of-focus” black and white images. For the artist, working in monochrome is important not only because it lends itself to stronger elements of abstraction or symbolism, but also because there is an element of being transported to another place and time. And for Moriyama, the journey continues.

Martín Chambi, Peru – ENLACE Contemporary Art, Peru Peruvian photography giant Martín Chambi (b. 1891 – d. 1973) was one of the first major indigenous Latin American photographers and is considered one of the most influential and important artists that South America has ever had. An unparalleled portraitist, Chambi was the first person to sell his images as postcards in Peru, a format he pioneered, and his work is recognised for its profound historical and documentary value. Each of his photos is a small work of art, offering a glimpse into Peruvian life during the 1920s and 1930s. The artist has been featured in three photographic exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, including a retrospective of his work in 1979.

Vincent Fournier, France – La Galerie Paris 1839, Hong Kong “Observe stars, travel in space, build new worlds, brings things to life or reprogram them, see beyond the visible”, says photographer Vincent Fournier (b.1970). Revealing his passion for science, technology and their mysteries, Fournier’s works are also a record of humanly fantasised utopian worlds. Whether he uses biomimetic research or studies in futurology, Fournier always leaves enough space for imagination. His photos are poetic and meticulous, which are the result of much advanced preparation, a taste for opposites, and film and literary inspirations. Through his imagery, the artist hopes that one can explore his fictional worlds and appreciate their incredible potential.

LATIN AMERICAN VOICES Bringing a taste of Latin American art to the region, Singapore Contemporary 2017 is delighted to present “Latin American Voices”, a special exhibition spread across 244 square meters of curated space showcasing more than 25 artists from across Latin America, including Peru, Argentina, Cuba, Mexico and Chile. This singular exhibition will present emerging, mid-career and established artists whose collectable works hang in prestigious institutions across the Americas, and offer Singaporeans a unique opportunity to see an incredible array of stunning works that capture the heart and soul of the Americas.

Pablo Atchugarry, Uruguay – ENLACE Contemporary Art, Peru Primal and full of elemental energy, the works of internationally renowned Uruguayan sculptor Pablo Atchugarry (b.1954) evoke an aura of otherworldliness. Working primarily in Carrara or pink Portuguese marble, the artist approaches the classical sculpting tradition with a contemporary ethos, creating monolithic pieces of art that are sumptuous, smooth and simple. The elegance of his work is achieved by creating variations on linearity, with curved corners and grooves forming organic fans or folds. Atchugarry’s works are held in private and public collections around the world and one of his recent works “Untitled 2015” recently set an auction record at Christie’s Latin American Art sale.

Mayté Guzmán, Mexico – X Espacio de Arte, Mexico Having participated in over 12 biennials and 35 exhibitions across the Americas and Europe, Mayté Guzmán (b. 1956) is an artist who cherishes movement. Guzmán is drawn by the movement of the body on canvas, with the speed by which the movement occurs at a precise moment and the gestures in that movement. The impromptu and accidental nature of her work, with its random paint drippings, are inspirational and give birth to compositions that are spontaneous, powerful, organic and expressive. The artist intends to convey energy, passion and strength to the viewer, and to spark their curiosity.

Ignacio Poblet, Peru – Galería Arte Amérika, Colombia Inspired by urban realities, Ignacio Poblet’s (b.1975) work poses profound questions about today’s Latin American reality. His characters are rooted in the “common man”, the anonymous urban hero who battles against and takes responsibility for the difficult conditions of his existence. His neo-figurative style moves away from the quaint and commonplace, creating through a technical dominance of acrylic and oil, compositional unity and an impactful pictorial language. Poblet’s work is the convergence of a range of new potentialities in the region’s history and manner of artistic expression.
