Atlanta Girls’ School Math & Foreign Language Placement Tests All newly enrolled students at Atlanta Girls’ School are asked to take a math placement test in order to ensure that each student is enrolled in a mathematics course that best suits her learning needs. Math placement for the ’09-’10 academic year will be determined on the basis of the student’s performance on the math placement test, her SSAT scores, and on her previous mathematics course work. In addition, newly enrolled students expecting to enroll in level 1-B, II, or III of a language must also take a language placement test. This is to ensure appropriate placement. Upper school students who transfer from accredited high school programs with a grade of a B or higher are not required to take a language placement test. Students beginning a new language are also not required to sit for the test. Dear Parents:

The Atlanta Girlsʼ School Technology Department welcomes you! We are excited to provide you the opportunity to take part in one of the most exciting educational endeavors available today. The technology program offers a variety of opportunities designed to meet the educational needs of our students, while allowing everyone to leverage the technology resources AGS has to offer.

Through this program, we plan to use the laptop as a digital hub of student learning. Everything we now design, plan, or implement takes into consideration simplicity, functionality, and access, both during and outside the school day. We hope that by introducing the power and mobility of a laptop we will change how and when students learn, increase learning opportunities for all students, and engage our most important stakeholders directly into the education process, you!

Atlanta Girlsʼ School students will receive a new industry standard Apple laptop computer as a part of this experience. This information packet will help guide you through the essential steps needed to make your participation in the program pleasant and hassle-free.

Laptop orientation will be conducted by members of the Atlanta Girlsʼ School Technology Department. The AGS Technology Department is our schoolʼs support mechanism for our Apple 1 to 1 program.

Laptop Model: The following is the Atlanta Girls' School issued laptop model, which will be fully supported by the school’s Technology Department and Apple.

A case is included with the laptop. This case has been specifically selected for the quality, size and superior protection that it will provide to the laptop. All students are to use this case on a daily basis to protect their laptop.

Student Agreement:

As with all other aspects of school life, there are rules and polices that govern computer usage. In addition to the Community Trust Agreement, the school has a Technology Acceptable Use Policy. Students will also be bound by the terms and conditions of the software they use. Copies of the policies and conditions will be provided to students at the “Out-of-the-Box” Laptop Distribution and Orientation meetings that will take place this summer. We hope that you will use the laptop in all aspects of your school life, but

commercial use of the laptop or use of the laptop to illegally share software violates our software agreements and is strictly prohibited.

Each student is responsible for the care of her computer. Atlanta Girls' School will carry insurance for each leased laptop, however there is a $150 per incident deductible, which is required to be paid prior to having the laptop repaired (due to accidental damage). The laptop is the property of Atlanta Girls' School; therefore students MAY NOT deface the laptop in any way (no stickers, coloring on the unit, etc.) The computer must be kept in full working condition and if necessary repaired through the authorized repair program. Students must immediately report any issues with the laptop to the AGS Technology Department by filling out a Tech Help Desk Ticket.

Fee Specifications and Included Items:

For this Technology Fee you will receive: • A new Apple 13” Aluminum MacBook laptop (software included) that is able to

utilize our wireless network and school network resources. You will have full use of this laptop, including all vacation breaks (aside from a two-week annual update during the summer).

• Full accidental insurance with a $150 deductible per incident. • Full service and a 3-year AppleCare Protection warranty on the laptop. Loaners

will be available for students from the Help Desk, if repairs cannot be made within one day. Please note: if a loaner is damaged while in use the same rates are applicable for repair.

• Help Desk support (generally available from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Monday - Friday)

• A Laptop Bag for safe transport of laptop.• An External Storage Device for backing up all personal data.

Confirmation of Participation:

Once we have received your signed form and payment, you will receive a confirmation email. You will also receive information about the dates of the “Out-of-the-Box” Laptop Distribution and Orientation meetings and how to register.

Laptop Distribution:

The “Out-of-the-Box” Laptop Distribution and Orientation meetings will be scheduled for early August. Parents and students must attend two of the orientation sessions to be able to pickup your laptop. The orientation/distribution process includes training and orientation so please allow at least 3 hours for each parent session and 6 hours for each student session. During the orientation we will cover warranty and insurance information, Mac basic features and functions, Internet safety, how to connect to the AGS community and much more. We will also have time set aside for a question and answer period.

4 Uniform Information

AGS Uniform & Dress Code Atlanta Girls’ School expects everyone - students, teachers, and administrators – to maintain standards of dress that are in keeping with the expectations of the school community. The Uniform Dress Code fosters an atmosphere of seriousness and purpose, which promotes professionalism among students, faculty, and staff. More importantly, AGS encourages every student to showcase her individuality through academics, athletics, and individual passions rather than through her clothing. The uniform is a symbol of community; worn well, it also becomes a symbol of personal pride for students. It is the responsibility of every student and her parents to be sure that the student is “in uniform” for the school day. The prescribed uniform is purchased through the Land’s End catalog or at Buckhead Uniforms. General Uniform and Appearance Guidelines • All uniform pieces should be labeled with the student’s name. • All uniform pieces should be free of paint, stains, tears, etc. • Appropriate undergarments should be worn at all times and should not be exposed or visible

through clothing. This includes t-shirts and tanks under blouses as well as shorts under skirts.

• No pajama pants are allowed anywhere on campus, not even to travel from the car into the building.

• We have plenty of warm uniform pieces. Students should be sure to have a uniform blazer, sweater, or fleece with them on cold days. Winter coats and raincoats cannot be worn in the building; students may wear the navy fleece with the AGS logo into the building, but must store it in their lockers during the day. Students will not be allowed to wear the fleeces in class.

• If a student is wearing a non-uniform piece of clothing, she will be asked to remove it (no warnings). In order to retrieve non-uniform pieces, the student must meet with the class Dean.

• If a student is wearing her uniform inappropriately (e.g., oxford shirt not tucked in, rolled skirt, inappropriate shoes), the student will be asked to fix the situation. If a teacher needs to ask a student to fix her uniform on a regular basis, it will be considered a sign of disrespect, and appropriate action will ensue. This action may include an unexcused removal from class or from school for the remainder of the day.

• Hair should be kept clean and out of the face. Extreme or unnatural hair color is not permissible. Hair, make-up, jewelry, and nail polish should not create a significant distraction or disruption in the classroom. No visible graffiti, writing on body parts, or tattoos are allowed. Piercings are limited to the earlobe only. All other piercings must be taken out or covered up. For a definition of acceptable modifications of a student’s appearance, please see the Associate Head of School.

Formal Uniform Once a week (day TBA), AGS will have a formal uniform day. Additionally there may be other occasions designated as formal uniform days. Students may NOT wear the following on formal uniform days:

• Polo (knit) shirt • Sweatshirt • Shorts or slacks • Sneakers • Letterman jacket • Team shirts

Casual Uniform Students are encouraged to look their best on a daily basis, but they may choose to wear more casual uniform pieces every day except formal uniform days. Even when students are wearing the casual uniform they must remember that:

• Oxford button downs must be tucked in at all times. • Skirts, shorts, and skorts must be no shorter than 3” above the top of the knee. • Navy fleeces may only be worn to and from school and during lunch if it is cold outside. • Socks must cover the ankle bone but should not cover the knee. • Sneakers must be all-white and clean.

Free Dress Day Free dress day is announced in advance, usually the last Friday of most months. Students pay one dollar to participate in this free dress day. These funds support Circle of Sisters’ projects. Students are not permitted to wear any of the following items: shorts or skirts that are shorter than 3” above the top of the knee, sofees, spaghetti straps, halter tops, tube tops, bare midriff shirts, exposed bra straps, high heels, flip-flops, or jeans that are torn. Physical Education Uniform • The PE uniform can be purchased at Buckhead Uniforms. It consists of a grey PE shirt, blue

PE shorts or sweatpants. All students are required to wear the regulation PE uniform during PE class.

• All PE shirts must have the student’s last name written across the back and above the logo on the front, left breast. This can be done with a thick fabric pen or with iron-on letters. PE shorts must be labeled on the waistband.

Note for Returning Students We understand that returning students still own some uniform pieces that do not fall under the category of “acceptable uniform pieces” but are still in good shape and complement the current uniform pieces. These uniform items will be “grandfathered” in. Items that are not “grandfathered” in are the baby blue polo, backless shoes, and sneakers that are not white.

5 Athletics Information

May 12, 2009 Dear AGS Families, Just as AGS academics prepare our students to believe in their intellectual competence, AGS athletics prepare our athletes to believe in their physical competence. The winning edge comes from both the trained mind and the trained body. Belief in one’s competence is an essential ingredient for personal empowerment. Numerous studies indicate that girls who spend time participating in sports tend to have higher grades, are absent less, and are more self-assured. Our student athlete exercises a great deal of discipline in her management of time for studies, practices, and games. She soon learns her achievements are the direct result of her efforts and the resilience with which she recovers from adversity. The confidence the student athlete gains in our programs allows her to be better prepared for both mental and physical competition. The AGS Athletic program operates on the precept that an athlete exists in each girl! We adhere to a no-cut policy for all sub-varsity teams, and we provide teams for both the skilled player and the novice. Knowledgeable, dedicated, and student-centered coaches are either acquired from the Atlanta Girls’ School faculty and staff or from the community at large. Our expectations include the athlete making every effort to attend all practices and competitions. Attendance is paramount. It must be a priority for all team members and their families. Middle School competes in the Metro Atlanta Athletic Conference (MAAC). Upper School competes in the Georgia Independent School Association (GISA) athletic league. In GISA, students in grades 8 –12 may compete at the Varsity level. Based on student interest, the following teams will be offered at AGS during the 2009 –2010 school year:

The number of participants in any one sport may change the team offerings. Student interest drives the athletic program.

The practice and game schedule for Middle School teams is a three-day a week commitment. Practices usually run from 3:30 PM and end at 5:00 PM or before. Varsity teams usually practice five days a week for at least ninety minutes. The timing for varsity practices varies depending on the practice location and the sport. If the varsity practice does not start immediately after school, the athletes are assigned a study hall in which they are required to do school work. Practices and games for sub-varsity teams will not be held during school holidays. Varsity competitors may on occasion be asked to practice or play in a tournament during a vacation. All athletes are asked to practice on their own during school breaks. Before you commit to a team, please read the two forms: Expectations for Athletes and Parent/Guardian Expectations. Both forms must be signed and returned to the Athletic Director before any athlete is permitted to join a team. Playing on a sports team is a great way to get to know yourself and other AGS students. No student will be allowed to participate unless her physical exam form (located in this binder) is on file in the main office. Summer is the time to experience a new sport or refine skills for your favorite sport. We are fortunate to have many sports camps available nearby. Colleges, universities, and many private schools offer sport specific camps. Sport specific information will be mailed in late July to all students. By that time Fall sport schedules will be included on the AGS web site. Upper School athletes will start practicing in early August before school starts. Most Middle School sports will begin the first full week of school. Finally, I am delighted that you have chosen to attend Atlanta Girls’ School. It’s HURRICANE season all year long for the AGS student athlete; we hope to see you participate in the sports program Fall, Winter, and Spring! Go Hurricanes!!

• In mid to late July, students will receive by mail a copy of their course list for the first semester. ISBN numbers will also be provided. We use an on-line bookstore, MBS. The Virtual Bookstore will be open approximately 4 weeks prior to the first day of school.

• MBS maintains a current list of AGS courses and books required for those

courses. New and used books are available for most courses. Also, e-books may be available for selected courses.

• The Virtual Bookstore can be accessed at www.mbsDirect.net or 1-800-325-3252.

On-line purchases can be made by a major credit card or debit card. Personal checks are accepted on mail orders. Orders will be shipped within 24 hours of receipt.

• Customer service reps are available to assist you in answering your questions

Lunch Program

• Our lunch program is offered through Campus Cuisine and Parents’ Circle. Parents’ Circle offers lunch on Mondays and Fridays. Campus Cuisine provides lunch on Tuesday through Thursday. Also, students have the option of bringing their lunch and purchasing snacks from the school store.

• Attached is a letter from Campus Cuisine, our independent lunch service, detailing

information regarding their participation in the lunch service at AGS for the 2009-2010 school year.

• Campus Cuisine provides flexibility in ordering your lunch. You may order lunch

by noon the day before or you may order on a weekly, monthly, or semester basis. Orders can be placed online at www.campuscuisine.net.

• Information on how to purchase lunch from Parents’ Circle will be distributed

over the summer.

9 Middle School After School Program

After School Supervision Policy Middle School

Atlanta Girls’ School Atlanta Girls’ School provides supervised care for middle school students who need to remain on campus after the end of the school day. There will be a $15 per day charge to parents for each day that student participates in the official after school program. The after school program runs from 3:30 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. every school day. After care will be available starting on the first day of school, August 18, 2009. Note that all students who are staying on campus after 3:30 and are not directly involved in a teacher-supervised activity or sports practice will be expected to be a part of the after school program. Keep this in mind as you make plans for your daughter’s transportation home. If you are unable to pick up your daughter by 3:30, she will go to the after school program until she can be picked up. All parents are expected to come into the building to sign their student out of the after school program. On the days that a student has sports or fine arts practice, the student must be picked up by the end of practice. Students who are not picked up within 15 minutes of the end of practice will be charged the $15/day fee for the after school program. All students are to be picked from the school by 6:00 p.m. (or within 15 minutes after the end of practice, whichever is later). If the student is not picked up by that time, a $1 per minute fee will be assessed for each minute after 6:00 p.m. that she is on campus. Payment Options Payment for this program will be $15 for each student. We ask that you anticipate your need for after care and pre-pay for the first quarter. If you do not use all of your days that you have paid for in the first quarter, your paid-for days will rollover into the second quarter. If you are unsure of your utilization of after care, you will be billed for days used on a monthly basis. Payment of after care will be expected on a timely basis. Non-payment of after care fees will jeopardize your ability to use this service in the future. Additional charges for late pick-up as detailed above, will be assessed on a monthly basis and billed accordingly.
