When Dubai joined with six other states to form the new

United Arab Emirates in 1971, the town of Dubai was just a

small place on the coast with a population of 60,000. There

were no tall skyscrapers, the streets weren’t full of Rolls

Royces and Ferraris, and you didn’t meet people from all

parts of the world there.Less than 40 years later, the modern city of Dubai couldn’t

be more different: it’s busier, richer and much, much bigger today. The population is now

1.5 million. Dubai is famous today as an international centre for business and tourism,

and for being one of the fastest growing cities in the world.

It’s growing in all directions – into the desert, into the sky and into the sea. The world’s

tallest building is here: the Burj Dubai, which is more than 800 metres tall, much higher

than New York’s Empire State Building, which is 381 metres tall. Next to it is the Dubai

Mall, the biggest shopping centre in the world. In addition to

the 600 shops, there’s an indoor theme park for children and

14,000 parking spaces for those expensive cars.

Dubai’s coastline is now 500 kilometres longer than it was.

This is because of the construction of the Palm Islands, and

of a group of 300 islands called The World. They get their

name from their shape –when seen from above, they look

like the world. Islands are on sale from about 15 to 50 million

US dollars.Ships are part of Dubai’s history (it has the largest manmade

port in the world) so it’s no surprise that the tallest hotel in

the world (and the most expensive) looks like a ship’s sail. This

is the beautiful Burj al Arab, a seven star hotel (five stars is

usually the best) with rooms that cost around €2,000 a night.

One thing that isn’t very different today is the temperature.

It’s still one of the hottest places in the world, often more

than 40 degrees Celsius, but amazingly there’s a ski resort just

outside the city, too. Indoors, of course. As well as modern

sports, you can still spend an afternoon at the racecourse,

watching animals racing at speeds of 40 km/h. They aren’t

horses, they’re camels, so not everything here is new.
