Cybersecurity Grad Shares His Journey to NYC Tanner Crompton graduated from NEIT in the summer of 2015 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Cybersecurity and Network Engineering. With a passion for technology since his high school days, Tanner’s extensive knowledge and commitment to excellence in the field of cybersecurity has brought him to an exciting position with a start-up company in New York City. Tanner shares some very important tips with students who wish to experience the same success that he is now enjoying. What made you decide to attend NEIT? After researching many schools, I chose to attend NEIT because of its known commitment to its students’ success. NEIT has a history of guiding ambitious students academically and professionally. Its curriculum was especially geared towards my aspirations in pursuing a degree in cybersecurity. Why did you choose your program? I did my industry research, weighed the pros and cons, and ultimately chose NEIT’s Cybersecurity program. In retrospect, the degree program was ahead of its time for the industry. I already had a solid foundation in the underly- ing technology, but I was thoroughly challenged by NEIT’s curriculum. Attending NEIT not only confirmed my passion for cybersecurity and technology, but also gave me a strategic advantage in my profession. What did you do to get started with your career? I have always been a tinker when it comes to technology. My career path started with enrollment in the Warwick Area and Career Technical Center’s Cisco program in the 9th grade. My instructor for those three high school years, Mrs. Elizabeth Charette, is now an in- structor at New England Tech. Mrs. Charette helped me build a foundation for technology as well as my career by guiding me to pursue my passions outside of the classroom. After completing my associate degree in Computer Networking, I pursued my bachelor’s degree in Cybersecurity while working a full-time job at a help desk, continuing to gain experience in the field. Tell us about your current position. Currently, I work for a startup company, Cyzen.io, as a Senior Security Engineer in New York City. Most days, I wear my engineering hat preparing Security Information Event Manage- ment (SIEM) solutions for client deployments. However, at a startup you find yourself calling on all the experiences you have gained over the course of your career. Depending on the day, I bounce between security engineering, security architecting, incident response, and security automation. What do you feel ultimately prepared you for your position? I kept my career goals in mind and was a self-starter in my pursuits. I found myself learning new skills, both technical and strategic, which have helped me succeed at many roles. At the end of the day, keeping your head in the game and being persistent in your pursuits prepares you best for your career. Do you have any advice for graduates who are just beginning their job search? For a career in cybersecurity, the first step is understanding the domains of information security. This allows you to lock in on a facet of information security that most interests you. Knowing what you’re most passionate about will automatically reflect in your responses during interviews. If you don’t have any experience in the field, I would strongly recommend internships. Tech savvy grads should consider an interning position as a Security Operations Center Ana- lyst or if you’re interested in auditing security controls, intern as a business analyst within the risk management department of a company. It comes back to understanding yourself, what you’re good at, and what you would like to do with your career. It’s also important to be persis- tent in your pursuit of new opportunities. NEIT has some great tools and assets at your disposal, many of which have helped me achieve some of my higher career goals. One asset I strongly recommend to students is the Career Services department. What can current students do to better prepare themselves for jobs in this field? As a student, you have time on your side and using that time wisely can help set yourself up for success. Use the resources provided by NEIT to prepare your resume and apply for internships during the summer months so you have some experience at hand when applying for your first full-time job. Do your research on the job market and try to understand what entry level security jobs look like. Establish accounts on LinkedIn and Indeed.com to search for job post- ings. Connect with industry profes- sionals on LinkedIn. Attending industry meetups is another great way to get edu- cated on a topic while meeting likeminded pro- fessionals. Julia and Jeremy Hood FROM ATTLEBORO, MA, Julia and Jeremy are enrolled in NEIT’s Criminal Justice program. Julia is in her 5th term while Jeremy just began the program this past September. They chose NEIT because of its hands-on approach to learning. Julia began her studies in the Occupational Therapy program and earned an associate degree. She then decided to pursue a different career path and enrolled in the Criminal Justice program as another way to help people. Her goal is to become a police officer in Rhode Island. Since taking forensic and policing classes in high school, Jeremy wanted to be a detective and enrolled in the Criminal Justice program because of the impressive labs, faculty experts and experiential learning style that Julia talked about. Once he completes the program, Jeremy also wants to work as a police officer and eventually become a detective. In addition to his studies, Jeremy attends the Citizens Police Academy in War- wick where he learns about the various aspects of police work. Julia and Jeremy like attending school together. “I enjoy having my younger brother at NEIT since the Criminal Justice program has such a wonderful staff and curriculum,” stated Julia. “I can watch him learn and grow doing the same things I did.” Jeremy replied, “It is fun attending school with my sister and it is good knowing if I need help with anything she is there for me.” Andrew and Seth Carson FROM SAN MARTIN, CA, Seth and Andrew are enrolled in NEIT’s Cybersecurity and Network Engineering program. In Terms 5 and 6 respectively, they chose NEIT for the resources the university provides in this program and the 10-week term. They were exposed to computers at a young age. Their father worked in the field and had a handful of computers available for them to tinker with so they decided to pursue careers in Information Technology. Once they earn their associate degree, Seth and Andrew plan to continue their studies at NEIT and earn their bachelor’s degree in Cybersecurity and Network Engineering. Upon graduation, their plan is to work in the networking or cybersecurity fields. Seth and Andrew like the fact that NEIT students are heavily involved in their coursework and that the majority of classes focus on their field of study. They feel that each instructor encourages students to succeed while bringing high quality, comprehensive material to the classroom. “Attending college with my younger brother is great,” said Seth. “Having someone who is attending the same school and in the same program is awesome. When either one of us is challenged by the material, we consult and encourage one another on homework, projects and assignments.” Andrew agreed, “It’s nice to have someone that you are close to in the same academic courses. If one of us needs help, we can ask each other. I also feel more motivated to study and do well since I want to keep up with my brother.” Amelia and Jake Murallo COMMUTING TOGETHER from Griswold, CT, Amelia and Jake are third term students in NEIT’s Surgical Technology program, but this program was not their original choice. Jake attended an Open House and was first interested in Veterinary Technology. Amelia was considering the Nursing program, but after reviewing their many options, they decided to enroll in the Surgical Technol- ogy program together and couldn’t be happier. Once Amelia completes her associate degree, she would like to work in a fast-paced surgical unit where she will acquire new and exciting experiences. Jake plans to continue his studies and ultimately become a physician assistant. Amelia shared that many individuals were surprised to learn that she and Jake were not only attending school together but were in the same program. However, she is more than thankful to be sharing this experience with her younger brother. “Since my brother and I live together, I was skeptical about how we would be seeing each other even more; but it’s been a great experience,” stated Amelia. “We have the same schedule al- lowing us to ride to school together and it gives us the chance to help one another for each class.” Jake agreed, “This has been the best experience ever. We help each other with work and lean on each other for support.” Benjamin and Zachariah Lamoureux FROM BURRILLVILLE, RI, Zachariah and Benjamin Lamoureux share the same in- terest in Mechanical Engineer- ing. Zach completed his Bachelor of Science degree this past September while Ben is currently in Term 5. Zach is employed as a sales engineer for a municipal pump distributor based in Connecticut while Ben hopes to become a head engineer or CAD designer for a large-scale manufacturing company and eventually wants to own a business. Zach chose NEIT because having teachers from the engineer- ing field made the program more appealing. He was impressed that NEIT allows students to explore career options before they complete their degree which he believes gave him an advantage over other applicants when seeking employment. Ben chose the Mechanical Engineering program too because of its fast-track, hands-on learning environment and to further develop his passion for building, designing and creating parts and prototypes. He appreciates the well-organized curriculum and that he can earn new professional certifications through his coursework. Zach stated, “It was cool to have gone to school with my younger brother because when he needs help in a class that I have already taken, it’s like a refresher for me and a review of the work I already completed. I can give my brother the help he needs when he’s a bit stuck.” Ben replied, “Attending the same classes as my brother did is a huge advantage because I always have an on-hand tutor for all my courses.” The NEIT community is proud to see these siblings working together as they build their knowledge and life experiences and wish them continued success. Siblings Learning Together at NEIT The sibling population at New England Tech is going strong! Whether it’s two brothers, two sisters or a brother and sister, it’s evident that they all enjoy attending NEIT together. Ironically, each sibling group featured here chose the same program of study. From the East Coast to the West Coast, these students have come to NEIT to learn and experience college life together.

DEAN’S LISTThe following students have achieved academic excellence for the quarter ending September 21, 2019. These full-time students have been placed on the Dean’s List for achieving a GPA of 3.6 or higher on a maximum scale of 4.0. Congratulations to all!

A Message fromPresident

Richard I. GouseGreetings to all,

The East Greenwich campus has been busy this fall as we welcomed students back to campus. Resident students returned to the Meltzer Residence Hall on September 27 for the start of classes on September 30. NEIT hosted Open Houses on October 26 and November 17 for prospective students and their fami-lies to learn what makes New England Tech a leader in experiential education. Attendees had the opportunity to tour the campus, visit our industry-specific learning labs, meet with Admissions and Financial Aid staff, talk with current students, faculty and staff, and learn about our robust Career Services department.

On October 25th, I had the distinct pleasure of honoring 19 dedicated New England Tech faculty and staff members who completed 10, 20 and 30 years of service to the university at the 28th An-nual Employee Service Awards. I extend my sincere thanks and congratulations to these individuals who work to ensure NEIT students achieve success in their field of study and future careers.

Our advanced degree programs con-tinue to thrive as five hardworking Oc-cupational Therapy professionals earned their doctoral degree on September 18. This was accomplished in just one year since the launch of the Post-Professional Doctorate of Occupational Therapy pro-gram. We wish them continued success. In addition, NEIT’s Master of Science in Construction Management program was ranked #8 out of 25 online degree programs offered across the country by Best College Review. My thanks to NEIT faculty and staff who strive to maintain high standards of quality for these programs.

As 2019 quickly comes to a close, we look back on the many accomplishments by our students, faculty, staff and alumni, and we look forward to 2020 with great anticipation for their continued success. The NEIT community wishes everyone a happy holiday season and a new year filled with happiness, peace and prosperity.

NEIT’S QUALITY SERVICE STATEMENT

Quality service for students, employees,

and customers at New England Institute of Technology is knowledgeable and informed employees working as a team to provide more assistance and information than expected in a caring and professional manner in order to empower the students to achieve their goals.

maintaining an impressive 4.0 GPA throughout both degree programs. Beau received “Best of Tech” awards for both his associate as well as his bachelor degree programs.

Alex and Beau’s life journey did not begin at New England Tech but fortunately their life choices brought them here. Coming from opposite sides of the world, they first met when serving our country in the U.S. Navy at a training command in San Angelo, Texas in November 2009. Beau (CTR1, (EIDWS/SW)) had previously spent three years on a ship based in Japan (USS Mustin), and Alex (CTR2, (EIDWS/EXW)) was coming from shore duty out of Fort Meade, Maryland. While they did not know one another at the time, they both had orders to report to Kunia, Hawaii after their training in Texas.

With both of them just coming out of failed relationships, Beau and Alex leaned on one another for comfort and companionship. Once in Hawaii their friendship grew even closer. They decided to start dating and shared so many incredible experiences together, from sky to scuba diving. However, after their first year in Hawaii, Alex received orders for a deployment to Iraq. She and Beau talked to one another every day, no matter the time or distance. After Alex returned from deployment, they realized they were transitioning to a much more seri-

ous relationship and that military life was no longer the best fit for their future.

The couple attempted to secure govern-ment contracting jobs after finishing their military service, but in 2013, the country experienced a nationwide government hir-ing freeze. Beau, who is originally from Louisiana, and Alex who hails from Rhode Island, moved back to Louisiana with their dog, Mika, to live with Beau’s mom while they determined a new plan. Alex’s brother graduated from NEIT and suggested they visit the campus on their next trip to Rhode Island, so they did and began classes in the fall of 2013.

In addition to their studies at NEIT, Beau worked at FM Global as part of the bachelor’s program co-op. Alex was asked to meet with a representative from the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) to offer engineering suggestions. She also met with NEIT President Richard Gouse to share her ideas on the design of the fitness center since she is a certified personal trainer and a strong advocate of a healthy lifestyle. Upon completion of his bachelor’s degree, Beau was employed by Amica Insurance.

Alex was now ready to begin her studies at Brown University. As part of her demanding course load, she discovered her creative side

and participated in many interesting programs such as a photography internship in Ecuador documenting an Amazonian indigenous com-munity known as the “Cofan”, a field Geol-ogy course in Montana with the University of Minnesota as well as a NASA Visual Art Course at RISD as a visiting student design-ing a Mars habitat with her classmates. She also found time to work as an instructor at the university’s fitness center. Because Alex was such an exemplary student, she was asked to give the 2018 Veteran’s Day Speech and the 2018 mid-year Commencement address at Brown University.

Beau and Alex are now taking the next steps in their journey together. Since September 2018 Beau has been employed as a Cybersecurity Analyst at MIT Lincoln Laboratory. Alex began her career in July 2019 at Leidos Engineering as a Systems Engineer in Mission Planning. The happy couple were married on June 1, 2019 on Martha’s Vineyard and bought their first home this past October. From their days in the U.S. Navy to their time at New England Tech and beyond, this dynamic couple demonstrates how hard work and commitment to their careers and each other brings a great sense of accomplish-ment and happiness. NEIT is proud to have been a part of Alex and Beau’s life journey and wish them continued success.

new englAnd teCh grAduAteS Alexandrea “Alex” Pimentel and Beau Guidry live by the philosophy of Mark Batterson, an American author and pastor who believes, “You’re always one decision away from a totally different life.” As Alex explained, “Some decisions are carefully planned and are very intentional, while others are discovered in time and feel almost perfectly random. Our journey through life together has been a very inspiring one that continues to be filled with both joyous achievements and unexpected setbacks.”

A Dean’s List student, Alex graduated from NEIT in the winter of 2015 earning an Associ-ate in Science degree in Mechanical Engineering. She served as a teaching assistant/adjunct instructor for Introduction to Mechanical Engineering after completing her degree. Alex wanted to broaden her career options so she applied to Brown University and was accepted that same year. In 2018, she earned dual degrees--a Bachelor of Art in Visual Art and a Bachelor of Sci-ence in Geological Sciences with a primary interest in Planetary Science.

An Information Technology/Software Engineering student, Beau earned his Associate in Sci-ence degree in the winter of 2015 and his Bachelor of Science degree in the fall of 2016 while

Two New Master’s Programs Now Being Offeredneit iS now oFFering two new Master of Science degree programs. The Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) program is a part-time, online/hybrid program for registered nurses (RN) seeking to become effective leaders in the healthcare industry. Students may choose between one of two specialty tracks: Educational Leadership or Family Nurse Practitioner.

The Educational Leadership track prepares RNs to teach in an academic or clinical-prac-

tice setting. This track focuses on educational foundations, instructional methods, curricu-lum development and educational leadership. The Family Nurse Practitioner track prepares students with the skills and expertise to provide nursing care to patients throughout their lifetime.

As cybersecurity has become one of the most critical Information Technology (IT) functions worldwide, NEIT’s Master of Science in Cybersecurity Defense (MSCD)

program prepares IT professionals to be work-place and community leaders in cybersecurity. Students will learn how to identify and assess cybersecurity vulnerabilities, develop plans to address those vulnerabilities and to imple-ment, monitor and respond utilizing the plans.

Community Service is Rewardedthe neit Community Along with the Feinstein Community Enrichment Program wish to congratulate the 2018-2019 Feinstein Enriching America Program Scholarship Recipients: Paige Cookson, Joshua Dyer, Christopher Francisco and Ricardo Rodri-guez. Collectively they have served their communities and fostered the ideals of the Feinstein Foundation by helping to better the lives of others. The awards ceremony was held this past August with faculty, staff, the students and their families in attendance.

Guest speaker, scholarship recipient, and full-time student in the Mechanical Engi-neering Program, Joshua Dyer, recounted his life’s defining community enrichment moment when he met Medal of Honor re-cipient Sergeant Ryan Pitts, who served in combat operations against an armed enemy vehicle in Afghanistan in 2008. Joshua met Sergeant Pitts at a fundraising event for The Fisher House in Boston, which assists veter-ans and their families. Sergeant Pitts asked Joshua “What do you do?” Joshua admittedly stumbled upon answering because he felt he hadn’t done anything compared to this war hero. Pitts went on to say, “It’s ok that you might not have accomplished everything you wanted so far in life. Now is your chance to leave a legacy.” It was at that instant Joshua knew he also wanted to serve veterans and their families. Joshua has gone on to do public speaking and advocacy for The Fisher House. He ran in the 2018 Boston Marathon raising over $10,000 for veterans and underwent multiple surgeries and a ruptured artery due to Compartment Syndrome which he developed while training for the marathon.

Joshua said, “This is a story that starts out with a man not knowing his identity and through the words of someone much greater than him is able to find himself. This is a story of how one’s heroic sacrifices inspired me to become a better person. This is a story of how we never know what simple words spoken could have such an impact on someone’s life. I am here to tell you, because of one man, I understand what it is like to help others that may be in need. Sergeant Pitts knew I needed help that night, help discovering something bigger than myself. He showed me what it was like to give without expecting anything in return. His selfless act that day in Afghani-stan will stand the test of time and hopefully inspire others the way he inspired me. To Sergeant Ryan Pitts I owe a most heartfelt thank you for he has given me the ability to see the good in people and want to forever help those in need. Crossing the finish line of the Boston Marathon will forever be my gift to him and the great veterans of the United States.” Joshua’s inspiring story was met with applause, tears and a standing ovation.

The Feinstein Leadership Scholarship is open to all Community Enrichment students each term. Since the Feinstein Enriching America Program’s inception in 1996, more than 9300 NEIT students have contributed a minimum of 139,825 hours of Community Enrichment which equates to $3,555,206 dol-lars of donated unpaid time. All NEIT students are encouraged to consider this worthwhile program. If you are interested in giving back to your community through the Community Enrichment Program, please contact Carolyn Taylor at [email protected] or 401-739-5000 ext. 3352.

Associate Professor Bill Culbertson and Lual Mayen

A Powerful Message at Power Game Day

on november 1St, the Video Game Develop-ment and Design Department hosted its 10th Annual Power Game Day for its students. The day-long event featured a morning line-up of industry speakers followed by one-on-one speaker and student meetings. In the late afternoon, students had the opportunity to earn trophies and bragging rights in the Super Mario Bros. game tournament.

The featured speaker of the day was Lual Mayen from the Republic of South Sudan. Lual spent his first 22 years growing up in a war-refugee camp. Amazingly, he taught himself coding on a laptop that his mother had saved three years to purchase. Today, Lual is receiving recognition and accolades worldwide for his efforts to create a video game for peace and conflict resolution.

An inspirational speaker whose life story demonstrates how passion can overcome the most extreme hardships, Lual was impressed with the NEIT campus, facilities, faculty and students. “Listening to Lual’s story was one of those once in a lifetime events,” said Associate Professor Bill Culbertson who organized the event. “The students focused on every word he said. Maybe he has changed someone’s life or perspective. He was definitely one of the most remarkable speakers we have ever had. Lual and I became good friends over the previous week. It will be interesting to see where life takes him.”

For the past ten years, Power Game Day has featured speakers from video game and related industries from across the country. Speakers have hailed from such major industry icons as Disney, WB/Turbine, Pixar, Hasbro, Schell Games, Ac-tivision, Rockstar, Epic Games and others. “This event is a huge part of the students’ experience in the video game department,” added Culbertson. “We can’t thank NEIT’s Administration enough for their support in helping us to make this day special for the students.”

NEIT’s New Doctors of Occupational Therapy

Congratulations to five outstanding Occupational Therapy professionals, Gretchen Hyssong, Julie Ann Laird, Alisha Ramos, Shannon Strate and Melinda Laro, for completing NEIT’s Post-Professional Doctorate of Occupational Therapy (PP-OTD) program in just one year! The new Doctors of Occupational Therapy were honored on September 18, 2019, just one year after the program was launched. They each presented their research findings and participated in a hooding ceremony with faculty, family and friends in attendance.

The PP-OTD program offers registered Occupational Therapists the opportunity to expand their academic and clinical experience and become advanced practitioners promoting health, wellness and participation across many populations and groups, as well as become advanced leaders in their profession. A unique feature of the program is the completion of an individualized doctoral project based on a very specific area of practice that students choose to explore. Students can utilize their own specific back-ground and knowledge and combine it with the expertise of a chosen mentor, NEIT faculty, and input from classmates.

The online program provides a highly supportive learning environment through suc-cessive ten-week academic terms with the ability for students to study when convenient. The program is open to working practitioners who have previously earned their Master of Science degree in Occupational Therapy and achieved certification status to practice as an Occupational Therapist by the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT).

“We are extremely proud and excited to award our first doctoral degrees to this very special group of Occupational Therapy clinicians,” stated Dr. Douglas H. Sherman, Senior Vice President and Provost. “Through hard work, perseverance and dedication to their profession, they have achieved the highest level of education in their field. The entire NEIT community is very proud of their accomplishment.”

Term 6 Business Management associate degree students participated in mock employment interviews while enjoying brunch in the Student Center. Teams in the Project Planning course organized the brunch from planning the meal to negotiating the budget and used interview techniques learned in class and etiquette tips demonstrated by Mark DaSilva, Director of Chartwell’s Food Services. Students dined with NEIT faculty, staff and other pro-fessionals who served as interviewers and observers and provided instructive feedback to the students. From left: Professor and Business Management Department Chair, Christine Stevens; student Eric Tholl-Laleme; and Senior Vice President and Provost, Dr. Douglas H. Sherman.

NEIT’s Criminal Justice Club Hosts9/11 Remembrance Ceremony

neit’S CriminAl JuStiCe depArtment and the Criminal Justice Student Club collaborated with local police and fire departments to remember the vic-tims of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. Marking the 18th anniversary of this most tragic event, this year’s ceremony recognized the sacrifice made by so many first responders, the innocent victims, as well as the many men and women who have succumbed to post 9/11 illnesses. The ceremony was held at NEIT’s East Greenwich campus with town, city and U.S. officials in attendance.

The presence of Honor Guards from several police and fire departments added to the dignified ceremony. The program included the reading of the Firefighter and Police Prayers as well as a presentation of the Memory Table adapted from the FBI National Academy Associates. The table was covered in white to symbolize loyalty and courage, a single rose was placed to honor family and friends of the victims, police and fire hats and badges represented their absence and a lighted candle reminded everyone that the victims will never be forgotten. A wreath laying and lowering of the flag was accompanied by the playing of “Taps”.

Many thanks to the Criminal Justice staff and students for continuing this most-important tradition of remembering and honoring those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

On September 17 and 18, more than 20 Criminal Justice students and faculty members traveled to Washington D.C. to visit the Law Enforcement Museum and Memorial (pictured here), the Holocaust Museum, the Spy Museum, and various Washington monuments. While at the Law Enforcement Museum, students participated in a team building exercise where each group was given numerous clues to solve an investigation and ultimately unlock the final answers to a puzzle. It was not only challenging but a great deal of fun for all.

Vet Tech Students Making a Difference

the numberS Are in and NEIT’s Veterinary Technology students have set a new record! Between October 2018 and September 2019, the Vet Tech students provided medical care, such as vaccines and blood tests, to 42 dogs and 76 cats. They also performed anesthesia and assisted in spaying and neutering 18 cats and 15 dogs. The Vet Tech team likes to think of it as a “win, win, win” situation where students get to practice their skills, the animals get the medical care that they need and the shelters save money on their veterinary bills. In addition to bringing animals on campus to work with, the students also rotate through the Pets in Need Clinic in East Providence to provide veterinary care for pets of low-income families in the state.

One lucky cat was adopted by an instructor before the end of the class period and is enjoying her new home and family! Students and staff stress the importance of help-ing to support local animal shelters and to check out their adoptable furry friends for your next pet!

During this past National Vet Tech Week, NEIT’s Vet Tech Club hosted its first-ever Graduate Forum during

which time graduates returned to campus to share their advice on how to be successful in the program. Two grads gave different but valuable insight about their experience at NEIT and discussed what they would have done differ-ently during their time on campus. Many students took advantage of this opportunity to ask questions on multiple topics including study methods, quiet places to study and making new friends. Both students and grads enjoyed this opportunity to learn from one another.
