NECPS Mission Statement

"The mission of the New England Carnivorous Plant Society shall be to share, to gain knowledge of, and to achieve expertise in all phases of growing,

education, appreciation, and conservation of carnivorous plants in both culture and in native habitats."

President’s Message

Hello everyone, welcome to the dog days of summer in Southern New England.GREAT outside tropical plant growing weather. Please bear with me for this message, as I remember something close to my heart. I’ve had a love for Carnivorous plants for most of my 52 years, even back in junior high school and earlier. I can remember reading the Golden Nature encyclopedia over and over to find out more about these plants. Remember, this was before the internet and immediate information! There was a small nature preserve about 7 miles from my house, and I used to scour the woods for the plants, but never found them. I spent the whole summer out there, catching all sorts of animals, fish, frogs and turtles for myself and to occasionally sell to pet shops. But never saw the plants I now love, no matter how much or how hard I tried to find them. I asked the “Ranger” who worked the preserve where these plants might be, and he explained to me how the plants preferred a sphagnum bog habitat (I KNEW that already) and that in that section of Long Island there were no places with that type of bog that he knew of. He did say that there was a preserve wayyyyyyyy out on eastern Long Island where the plants grew in the wild. For me, a kid too young to drive, eastern Long Island was almost another country. Well, it was another county at least! The Long Island Railroad didn’t go close, and it was definitely too far to bicycle out there, even for someone like me who rode everywhere back then! I mentioned it to my parents, and a few weeks later my father suggested during the week that we had some time that weekend, and him and I could drive out there to see the plants! FINALLY, a chance to see these plants in the wild!!!!!!! I could barely control myself, and my Father and I set out on a Sunday, drove the several hours (seemed longer than that, really) out to Quogue Wildlife refuge in Quogue, NY to see the plants. I remember the boardwalk over the bog, and lying down on the boards so I could get as close as I could to Sundews and Pitcher plants! These were some of the first CP’s I’d ever seen, not just in the wild but real live plants! I think we spent maybe an hour there, with me just staring, looking, observing the plants, while my father watched me and wandered around. Then we drove several hours to get home.

I don’t remember what my father and I talked about that day, I know we talked most of the way out, and that I slept part of the way back, exhausted from the excitement of seeing CP’s for the first time like that. But it was one of the most memorable events in my youth, and I spent it with my father. My father passed away this month on 6 July, 2008 at age 90. I don’t know if my Father remembered that trip in later years, but I remember that (and others with him) like they were yesterday. The sights, sounds, smells, and emotions are as real and special now as they were all those years ago. That trip helped cement my love for CP’s, and the feelings I have for my father, still. Often it is the little things we do for others, especially for children, that have lasting affects we can never even hope for or understand. I hope each and every one of you has a time like that with someone special, both as the guide, and as the child. Thank you, dad.

Namaste
