By Jay AdamsCEG CORRESPONDENT
A water boy, who soon grew up to become aheroic bombardier, made it grow.
A woman, who happens to be the bombardier’sdaughter, runs it. Her efforts have helped to makeE.T. & L. Corp. one of the top women-led compa-nies in all of Massachusetts for more than a decade.Like many construction companies, E.T. & L.
Corp.’s beginning was small and humble. The com-pany was founded at the end of World War II in1945 in Dedham, Mass., as Eastern Tree andLandscape Corporation. In those formative years, in a nation healing from
war and brimming with opportunity, the companyfocused on residential and commercial landscaping.Eastern Tree and Landscaping established its landclearing division in the early 1950s, and it quicklybecame one of the largest commercial land clearing compa-nies in Massachusetts. Eastern Tree and Landscape cleared thousands of acres of
raw land for projects such as the impressive Otis Air ForceBase on Cape Cod, Loring Air Force Base in Limestone,Maine, and major dam sites around New England. “We began as landscapers and land clearers, but my father,
Anthony Colosi, can be credited for making E.T.& L. Corp.what it is today,” said Company President Jennie Lee Colosi. “He started in the construction industry while still in high
school as a water boy on sites around Boston and westernMassachusetts. After serving as a bombardier in the Pacificduring World War II, he returned home and began work as aunion oiler. But he had higher aspirations and the ambition tomake those come to fruition,” she added. “He joined EasternTree and Landscape in 1953, just as the company was begin-ning to find real success in the land clearing industry. Andwithin just three years, he rose to the position of president.” But her father’s ambition did not stop there. “Anthony had a vision for the company and in his first
decade as president, he led Eastern Tree and Landscapingbeyond its initial scope of work. With the help of his back-ground in construction and natural business savvy, the com-pany entered into site preparation, land development androad construction,” said Jennie Lee.In addition to clearing and grubbing, the company also

undertook excavation work, embankments, storm water con-trol and paving.
Due to this diversification and a new emphasis on con-struction, Anthony decided to change the company’s name toE.T.& L. Construction Corp. in 1964.
The Need to ExpandE.T.& L. Construction Corp. continued to succeed, soon
outgrowing its home in Dedham. In 1971, the company
moved its headquarters and yard facilities to Rte.117 (Great Road) in Stow, Mass., where it operatesto this day.
Throughout the 1970s and early 1980s, E.T.& L.Construction Corp. expanded yet again to includebridge work, becoming one of the most experiencedhighway, road and bridge builders inMassachusetts.
During this time, the state awarded many largecontracts to E.T.& L. including the construction orrehabilitation of sections of the state’s most traveledhighways from the New Hampshire line to theRhode Island line, from Worcester to Cape Cod —Interstate Routes 95 and 495, along with Routes 25,290, 190, 146, 9, 2 and 140.
This golden era inspired Anthony’s daughter topursue a career in civil engineering. Having seenher father at work, very much growing up in thebusiness, she joined E.T.& L. after graduating fromGeorgia Tech in 1977. The days of endless roads to
construct were coming to a close, however, and in 1986,E.T.& L. expanded yet again with the creation of an envi-ronmental division.
“Since then, we have completed about 100 landfill clo-sures and/or expansions in Massachusetts, Connecticut andRhode Island, in addition to site preparation in the privatesector for companies like Digital and New England Power,”said Colosi.
Seeing the company through these changes helped

Countering Challenges WithDiverse Work Experience prepare Jennie Lee for var-ied economic conditionswhen she took over from herfather in 1988.
Woman-RunConstruction
Jennie Lee has seen vastchanges in the perception ofa woman heading a largeconstruction company in thelast 30 years.“Being a woman in the
construction industry ismuch less of a big deal nowthan it was when I first started. When I wasin school for civil engineering in the mid-1970s, some professors acted as though Iwas invisible in class, never choosing me toanswer a question,” she said. “Back then, there were many men who felt that a womanshould not work construction or be in engi-neering school. “After I graduated, I definitely had to
prove myself to many of the old-timers Iencountered. “But soon, they saw that I actually knew
what I was talking about and treated me likea true co-worker and associate,” addedColosi. “In my experience, no one is discrimina-
tory like that today. On the contrary, I havehad many employees tell me they reallyenjoy working for a woman. Perhaps it’s thatI feel more comfortable putting a more per-sonal touch on the company than a manmight. Who’s to say? All I know is that Itruly enjoy working in this industry. It’sexciting and challenging. It’s different every-day.
“I [and everyone at E.T.& L.] feel sucha sense of accomplishment when I stop andconsider that we take plans — ink and paper— and turn them into something tangible, usually quite vast, for people to use,” saidColosi. “I think that’s what draws people tothe industry, men and women. Here at E.T.&L. Corp., we almost have more women withcivil engineering degrees than we do menwith those credentials. If we are invisiblenow, it’s because women have been accept-ed in the industry as equals.”
E.T.& L. in 2011Today, E.T.& L. Corp. (a subsidiary of
E.T.& L. Construction Corp. created in1998) continues to maintain a varied portfo-lio, completing road, bridge, site and envi-ronmental work around New England.
“We completed our largest project to date— $37 million — in 2007 with theSagamore ‘Flyover’ Project. We replaced thetraffic-causing rotary before the SagamoreBridge with a series of interchanges to easesummer travel to Cape Cod,” said Colosi.“E.T.& L. also has been awarded some veryunique projects, such as the recently com-pleted rehabilitation of a covered bridge inHardwick-Ware, Mass. that is more than 100years old.” With the economic downturn several
years ago, work has become more sparse andthus also much more competitive. But E.T.&L. Corp. has been able to counter these chal-lenges with its diverse work experience, being frugal and a commitment to “a jobwell done.” “To that end, in recent years we have
begun work for local airports rehabilitatingrunways in Turners Falls and North Adams[Mass.] and installing an EMAS atWorcester Airport. We have also won jobsborn of the American Recovery andReinvestment Act; one such job was the con-struction of a section on the Manhan RailTrail Bike Path inEasthampton/Northampton that included theinstallation of a prefabricated bridge for atrail overpass,” said Colosi.“This past year also brought another
departure for E.T.& L. as we, in a joint ven-ture with J.F. White Contracting Company, were awarded our first design-build project, reconstructing seven bridges along the CSXrailway in central Massachusetts,” sheadded. “Currently, we are working on three land-
fills in South Hadley, Fitchburg and Bourne,Mass., in addition to several bridge projectsin Lee and Seekonk, Mass. And with thecoming spring, we will be starting projects in

Being small enough to fit into less-
than-roomy spaces is great. So is a
tremendous amount of power. But if
that’s all an excavator has to offer,
it will never be a Doosan. Our new
smaller, but still powerful, DX140LCR is
a workhorse machine built to minimize
both downtime and operating costs.
It’s easy to maintain with centralized
grease points, convenient hose routing
and easy lter replacement. It’s also as
durable as a tank, sips fuel and is so
comfortable you could almost live in it.
Now it’s easy to see that with Doosan,
you may be working in close quarters,
but you’re never in a tight spot.

Colosi Leads E.T. & L. to Place in Top 50Women-Led Companies Year After Year Brimfield, Colrain, Williamstown and Bridgewater-Middleborough, Mass.” During the height of its next active work season, the cor-
poration expects to employ about 180 people.
Top Women-Led CompanyIt is this perseverance and boldness to branch out that has
characterized E.T.& L. from the beginning. In 2002, Babson College’s Center for Women’s
Leadership and The Commonwealth Institute began anannual research project regarding the consummate women-led companies in Massachusetts. With the data gathered from a survey sent to female CEOs
within the state, it tabulates not only scores of comparativestatistics, but it also publishes a ranked list based on annualrevenue. Every year, E.T.& L. has landed in the Top 50.*
2002 — No. 432003 — No. 302004 — No. 352005 — No. 252006 — No. 252007 — No. 242010 — No. 28
(*In 2008 and 2009, the list was not published due to achange in focus; rather than studying revenue alone, theCenter decided to research how women-led companies werecoping with the recession.)With construction making up only approximately 10 per-
cent of the companies surveyed, these rankings make E.T.&L. Corp. one of the largest women-owned construction firmsin Massachusetts.“But it is our dedication to hard work done well that has
served us best over the years,” said Colosi. “The companywas founded at a time when work was ‘work;’ it was a prod-uct of your hands, your skill, and the end result benefited thecommunity as a whole. We maintain that passion for doingour best because it is our families, friends, neighbors and co-workers who use highways, roads, bridge and other work wedo. “We always keep in mind that when we build, we are
building for the future. There is no better feeling than seeingpeople use and enjoy something that you have built or madesafer,” she added. “With this kind of pride and work ethic embodied in all of
our employees, E.T.& L. will continue to be a well-respect-ed and sought-after construction company.”For more information visit wwww.etlcorp.com.(This story also can be found on Construction

Maine Company Reaches200 Turbine MilestoneWith construction crews busy working
alongside Maine’s winter weather, Reed &Reed announced that the company now hasmore than 200 wind turbines either installedor under construction. This milestone was reached on the Rollins
Project, near Lincoln, Maine, and representsthe 192nd turbine Reed & Reed has erectedor begun constructing in Maine and the195th grid scale wind turbine in the stateoverall. The remaining 10 turbines the company
has installed are in Massachusetts. JacksonParker, president and CEO of Reed & Reed, the lead contractor building the Rollins Windproject in Penobscot County, commented onthe project’s progress. “It is exciting to reach this new milestone
and gratifying to know that many people innorthern Maine, specifically Lincoln, Lee,Burlington, Winn and Mattawamkeag, areworking hard, helping to build Maine’s latestwind project. Right now, we have about 200people at work on the site, and more localbusinesses providing essential services. Thisis extremely good news given these tougheconomic times. While we are focused onbuilding a new generation of clean, renew-able power, we are also very aware that thisindustry has helped the people of ruralMaine earn paychecks and keep food ontheir tables.” Rollins Wind is a project being developed
by First Wind and consists of 40 GE 1.5 MWturbines, which is enough renewable energyto power more than 22,600 homes per year. “This project is due to be completed later
this spring. It is significant as it continues themomentum of wind development for Maine. We are proud that Reed & Reed’s 200thwind turbine is at Rollins and appreciate allthe hospitality and support we’ve gottenfrom our new neighbors in the towns ofWinn, Lee, Lincoln and Burlington,” saidMatt Kearns, vice president of NortheastDevelopment for First Wind.
“In the first year after the project is com-pleted, First Wind estimates that the Townsof Lincoln, Lee, Winn and Burlington willdeposit a combined total of over $750,000 ofFirst Wind tax money into their respectivetown economic development funds. This ismoney that the towns will be able to use tofund a wide variety of job creating and com-munity development projects they eachidentify.”Parker said his company relies on local
subcontractors and vendors to get these proj-
ects done on time. “Not only do our construction crews rent
local motel rooms and frequent the localstores, but Reed & Reed remains committedto hiring local people to work on and supportthese projects. This maximizes the benefitsto the community and creates a real sense ofpride.” Paula and Terry Raymond, owners of
Raymond’s Variety in Lee have seen a realboost in their business this winter, due to theRollins Wind project. “Breakfast is the big meal for the con-
struction crews. They come in every day andget their breakfast. And our fuel business isup because they fuel up their trucks. Theyalso buy boots, gloves and other suppliesfrom us so we feel lucky to have this projectclose by.” Brian Souers, who owns Treeline Inc., can
testify to the positive impact this project ishaving on his hometown of Lincoln. “I can see the results of this type of activ-
ity ripple through the community. My busi-ness provides a number of services. In par-ticular on the Rollins’ project, we haveappreciated the opportunity to service theconstruction vehicles when needed. This hasmeant a boost to our bottom line.” Jan Clifford, who owns The Lincoln
House Motel, thinks that the Rollins Windproject has meant a much more prosperouswinter this year. “The guys are in the restaurants. They are
buying gas and food. And all of our motelrooms have been filled this winter.” Clifford and David Wright also jointly
own the Cozy Court apartments in Lincoln.Clifford said, “Our efficiency apartments areall rented this year. Winters are usually slowfor us, but we’ve had our biggest winter yet.”
