Tim Rose once lived in anunheated trailer that was socold he had to scrape thefrost off his television towatch it.“I was living in a camper,
a trailer. There was no insu-lation. It was February,” saidRose. “I went to theLaundromat to wash myclothes, but it closed before Icould dry them. So, I tookthe clothes home to my trail-er camper and they froze. Iscraped ice off the TV toview it. I had a shower overthe toilet.”His first car was an Opal
he bought for $100. “Thank God it was a standard shift,”
Rose said. “I can’t count how manytimes I had to push that car in the coldmornings in order to start it.”Rose was 22. It was 1985. With no
post-secondary education and some
well-honed carpentry skills helaunched his own business. He also made a vow. “I said, ‘My children will never see
this.’ I worked 90 to 100 hours a weekso my kids would never go through
that,” said Rose.Fast forward nearly 30 years. Rose,
the founder of ATNT Construction (AllTop Notch Talent), now lives in a 9,800
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) With siltbuilding up in the Providence Riverand dredging costs expected to rise, planners are looking instead at raising apedestrian bridge linking parks on bothsides. The Providence Journal reported
that the I-195 Redevelopment DistrictCommission is preparing for construc-
tion of the parks and a pedestrianbridge. It’s considering the types ofboats that will fit under the bridge andthe view of the water. Commissioner John M. Kelly want-
ed to know what size boats might fitunderneath the bridge in years to come. He said he’s not thinking about 2015
but asked how the public will use the
bridge in 2025. The issue of navigability relates to
silt that has built up on the river’s bot-tom, which hasn’t been dredged inyears.

sq. ft. home (11,100 square feet if you count the finishedbasement and the walkout, which puts a fourth floor on theback) and includes an award-winning swimming pool roominside edged with meticulous stone work Rose laid.He designed and built the massive home himself with
only one other contractor to help him.His company, ATNT Construction, has served Rehoboth
and adjacent Swansea, Mass. (and surrounding communi-ties) with a variety of services — excavation, site work, land-scaping, septic system Title V installation and the clearingand development of rural land in order to build completehome sites from the ground up.Of the hundreds of homes he has helped build, the most
important is the magnificent one he lives in, complete withhis working office, workshop and equipment yard onPurchase Street. His two sons — Keith and Kyle — are now on board as
the second generation of Roses running subsidiary enterpris-es under their Dad’s company umbrella.“Kyle is running a job site; Keith is running a job site.
They work 60 to 80 hours a week in summer. They workhard,” said Rose. “They are building a stick frame house inone sub-division, a big modular house in another sub-divi-sion. That sub-division we do, soup to nuts. We bought thelot, cleared the lot, landscaped, and built the homes and arefinishing them.”He proudly points to a 32-house sub-division in Swansea
where he and his sons build custom homes per order.
From Princess to RulerAt age 17, Tim Rose finished high school and became an
in-house carpenter at Princess House in Dighton. “I workedweekends, helped to build garages. I was the young kid, the
bull worker,” said Rose. “They all wanted to work with theyoung kid who never stopped and didn’t know any better.“So, I went from high school to Princess House to my
own business,” he said.A self-taught excavator and backhoe operator taking on
small jobs, his first major purchase was a 1988 one-tondump truck.“That was my first brand-new truck,” said Rose. “Believe
it or not, I went on dates with that truck. It was the only vehi-cle I had.” His modest fleet soon expanded with the addition of a
1970 John Deere backhoe.“When I left Princess House, I did doors, windows, roof-
ing. And I started T.R.’s Home Improvement. That becameATNT — All Top Notch Talent,” said Rose. “I will celebrate30 years in business in 2015.”His son Kyle began learning about heavy iron while still a
child. A photo of Kyle, age 9, working a backhoe is a prizedpossession.

Langley Construction Chooses Right Iron With Help From Northland JCBLangley Construction, a New Hampshire-
based commercial and industrial constructioncompany finds comfort for more than 28 yearsusing JCB Equipment on their job sites. “JCB machines have been on our job sites
since we started our business in 1986. JCBmachines provide us quality and ruggedmachines to get the job done,” said StephenLangley, president of Langley Construction. Langley Construction prides itself on the high
level of quality that each of its projects are man-aged. Managing fewer projects at a time hasallowed Langley Construction to grow slowerover time. When Stephen and Denise Langley’sson Trevor returned from the U.S. MarineCorps., they appointed him vice president andsuperintendent of Langley Construction. As aresult, Langley Construction decided to take onmore than one project at a time, which necessi-tated the need for another JCB machine. Bill Spain of Northland JCB worked together
with Langley Construction to help it find theright JCB machine to fit its needs. Spain conducted visits toits job sites to determine its needs for the new machine. Inlate July, Langley Construction decided to purchase a JCB535-140.“We are pleased with our new JCB 535-140. The
knowledge and support that we have received from Billhas been great. Our service technician, Frank Babcock,is very knowledgeable and great,” said Langley.

Landscaping by Keith CarriesATNT Through Recession “Kyle was born for this industry,” said
Rose. “Keith doesn’t like the constructionend much. He developed the landscapingarm of our business and it boomed. He runsLandscaping by Keith. During down times,if it wasn’t for Keith’s landscaping business,we’d have been hurting. Now, the business ishalf construction and half landscaping.”Rose is familiar with difficult recessions.
The first recession in construction hit thelocal area just three years after he formed hisbusiness. “That was a big one in 1988 and 1989,”
Rose said. “It almost took me out because Iwasn’t established yet. I had to scramble, doing small jobs. We were back to buildingsheds and putting windows in.”But now, with three decades under his tool
belt, Rose’s Better Business Status sustainshim on merit alone. “We spent the money early. We used to
have ads everywhere, but we’ve been inbusiness long enough where we don’t needit,” Rose said. “Our brand new Web site andword of mouth is all we need. Clients won’tdo anything without us; they want us to doeverything. When they go on vacation, theyleave us their keys in order to do the work intheir yards while they are away.”
Goals and GoalpostsHis Tatiana Estates up the road is a source
of special pride as is the incredible poolroom in his massive home. His home officeis filled with memorabilia, photos, trophies, awards, plaques and other athletic accom-plishments.They are not his. They are his sons’. When
Keith and Kyle are not putting in massivesummer hours with Dad on the job, they aresetting state scoring records in both soccerand football.Rose beams when he speaks of his boys
on both the landscaping turf and the footballturf.“Here is an award from the Boston Globe
for Keith. When he was just a sophomore atDighton-Rehoboth High he made theGlobe’s Eastern All State All ScholasticTeam in soccer. There’s story after storyhere,” said Rose, pointing to newspaper arti-cles on the wall. “And Kyle, as a junior inhigh school, scored 19 touchdowns in foot-ball. He is a senior this year. In one game, hescored four TDs, runs of 84, 82, 76 and 64yards. He had eight carries and averaged 64yards a carry. That’s just phenomenal.”
Hidden Civil War“About 20 years ago, I was a sub-contrac-
tor on this job. We were excavating a site andmy driver was crossing this driveway withthis dozer and it collapsed under the weight,”said Rose. “It was like a sink hole. The dozerweighed six tons and it went through the roofof this hidden room. It was a hideaway filledwith Civil War weapons, swords. No oneknew it was there; certainly not the man whobought the lot we were working on. If he hadnever crossed that driveway, we’d still neverknow it was there. Those swords sold forabout $1,000.”Besides the huge home sub-division, Rose
has helped to build a large apartment com-plex in Fall River, which features tieredapartments, Planet Fitness, Bargain Outletand other notable stores. But Rose has always sustained controlled
growth, knowing what he could handle with-in budget, how much he could borrow ormaintain if the economy turned south.“The big thing to avoid is to get too big,
too fast,” said Rose. “It is better to be pre-pared when the economy goes bad. Howelse do you pay those bills?“I can tell you about this local contractor.
He had a $1 million excavator. Do you knowwhat the bank note is on a $1 million exca-vator? It’s probably $15,000 per month. When things went bad during the housingcollapse that was the end of him. That’s whywe didn’t become huge,” said Rose.Except for his impressive, self-built man-
sion, that is. He is proudest of how far he hascome without formal education — from afrozen trailer with icy underwear toHummers for both sons and a new $75,000work truck.“My brother and my two sisters, they
were on the dean’s list in college. My moth-er was a school teacher. They looked a littledown on me,” said Rose. “Well, I was ableto buy this 50-acre farm, bought the othersout, made the blueprints, dug the foundationwith my friend Richie and built, what Richiecalls, ‘This ranch on steroids,’” said Rose.“Just me and him.“My mother said, ‘Show us the plans.
Show us the blueprints.’ Richie said, ‘We’llshow you when we are done.’ We showedher when it was done.”“Do you like the pool room? Like the
truck?,” Rose said. “It’s a long, long wayfrom that trailer park and that $100 Opal.”For more information, call 508/326-6336
