All Star Succeeds With COR Equipment, Rubble MasterYou could call it a light bulb moment.Matt Forte and T.J. Koester realized their company, All

Star Paving and Sealing, was paying to haul asphalt and con-crete from some job sites and purchasing it for others. Thebusiness partners realized they needed to start recycling theasphalt and concrete they were hauling out of their job sites.“It was really kind of a no brainer for us; we were paying

money to take these materials to area recycling plants. At thesame time we were purchasing road base materials fromlocal aggregate producers or other recyclers,” said Forte.“If we can bring torn up asphalt and concrete to our own

facility, process it and re-use those same materials as a roadbase, saving us from buying the road base elsewhere, thesavings are significant.“As an added bonus we have started accepting asphalt and

concrete from other contractors who need to get rid of it, andwe have the option of selling road base materials if we pro-duce more than we can use on our own,” Forte added. To achieve this goal All Star Paving purchased a Rubble

Master portable recycler, which it is using to process asphaltand concrete and create ¾-in. processed road base material. On top of all of the expected benefits, the material that theyare making is a better quality material than they had accessto in the past, according to Forte and Koester. It also has been a huge time and fuel saver for All Star

Paving as they are no longer sending their trucks to anothersite, waiting to get loaded and then trucking the materialsback to their site. The Rubble Master impact crusher, which was purchased

from COR Equipment, Stamford, Conn., has a double deck

screen. Oversized material from the first pass through thecrusher is separated and conveyed back to the crusher onemore time. This eliminates the need of having to run thematerial through a cone crusher.

“We worked with D.J. Cavaliere at COR Equipment tomake this purchase,” Forte said. “COR Equipment is ownedby the Cavaliere family, who is also in the paving business. They understand our needs because they are in the samebusiness that we are. I’ve known D.J. Cavaliere for a longtime and have enough respect for his opinion that when hetold us about Rubble Master we had to give it serious con-sideration. We rented the machine three times before mak-ing the decision to buy. Today the Rubble Master gives us thecapability of processing up to 300 yards of material each day. “The service that we have received from COR Equipment

has been excellent. Granted, they are not located very faraway, and the Rubble Master rarely gives us issues, but whenwe need help the staff at COR tries to troubleshoot the issueover the telephone and if that does not work they are at ourfacility in no time.”

All Star Paving and SealingFounded in 1999 when Forte and Koester, who each have

20 years of experience in the paving and services business, joined forces, All Star Paving and Sealing’s services includeasphalt paving, sealcoating, patching, curbing, crack repair, and oil and stone work. Forte handles all of the consultingand estimating while Koester manages the work force. The company’s masonry services include Belgium block,

granite curbing, pavers, concrete curbing, flagstone, brickpavers and stone wall construction. It also offers excavationservices, which include drainage, utility work, site clearingand grading. The business model has been simple. Give the client the

highest quality product with a level of service that exceedsanyone else in the industry, according to Forte. All Star Paving and Sealing’s market area is southeastern

Connecticut and its customer base is working on commercialand residential clientele. For more information, visit www.allstarpavingct.com or

ETTI from page 1

projects, with over 630,000 ft. (192,024 m) of pipe installed.According to president Scott Kelly, its work is broken intotwo specific areas — contract and gas work. On the gas side,ETTI holds the master contract to install all main line andservice lines for Maine Natural Gas, a project that allows thecompany to combine its trenchless services with the work ofskilled trenching crews. ETTI also does contract work for other companies, using

the HDD technology that it has pioneered in the region toallow its customers to minimize the cost and aggravation ofclosing down roads, or having to work through other surfacebarriers such as bridges and waterways in order to completetheir construction work. Although its unique drilling tech-nology plays a big role in the success of ETTI, that alone isnot enough to explain its outstanding growth. What else con-tributes to make ETTI such a shining example of businessachievement?Attitude and vision have a lot to do with it. “We’ve heard that there was a recession out there, but so

far we have refused to participate,” said Kelly, who turnedmore serious to explain how the company has embracedtechnology, not for technology’s sake, but when and if itmakes sense. But Kelly insists on giving his people the larg-er portion of the credit, and he specifically mentions theirskills — not necessarily their technical skills, though, sincehe believes that “soft” skills such as communication, listen-ing, work ethics and desire to learn, are at the bedrock of thecompany’s reputation. Kelly has earned the right to that opinion. His manage-

ment philosophy emphasizes the importance of starting withthe person. “We hire good local people with strong work habits and

then we train them.” ETTI has developed an ambitious program that includes

drilling, drilling mud, geology and utility locating modules,as well as some designed for team building. Treating eachemployee as an individual person and as a valuable team

member; listening, supporting and allowinghis people to buy into his vision, is a conceptthat may sound great but is a lot of work toimplement. Kelly thinks it’s worthwhile, however. How has receiving the 2013 Equipment

World Magazine Contractor of the Yearaward affected ETTI? “Not a day goes by without someone in

town, or in the industry, mentioning it,” saidKelly, who makes it clear that he believes theaward goes to everyone in the company —“we all won it together” — and that he wasvery impressed by the level of the other con-testants and the intensity of the scrutiny theyall underwent. “We needed to provide names of 20 com-

panies that we have had as customers over along period of time; they reviewed our safety

record, and interviewed us for twoand a half hours,” said the ETTIpresident, who recounts being atLas Vegas with the other finalistsand forging relationships with sev-eral other company owners withsimilar business philosophy andvision. “We made a commitment to get

together on a regular basis, andthere’s even a possibility that we arejoined by representatives fromEquipment World, which was thesponsor of the contest.”

(This story also can be found onConstruction Equipment Guide’sWeb site at www.constructionequip-mentguide.com.)

ETTI Uses HDD Technology to Reduce Cost, Road Closures

As part of the program put on by EquipmentWorld, the finalists participated in a round tablediscussion on some of the most pressing topicsfacing the industry.

NEFPE ‘Make Your Mark’Day Supports Two Charities

At the 2013Northeastern ForestProducts EquipmentExpo, in Bangor, Maine, the equipment was metic-ulously cleaned. Fromwheels to cab, from tracksto roof, the machines hadbeen detailed for hours toget them in perfect shapefor the show. And theystayed that way.

Excluding one machineat the Chadwick-BaRossbooth. Yes, it was pre-pared with the same careas the others. And yes, itwas once shining fromcounterweight to proces-sor head. But when theshow started on May 17,the glossy gleam wasquickly replaced with adifferent kind of shine.

That’s because duringChadwick-BaRoss’ “Make Your Mark”event, children were encouraged to “maketheir mark” by painting, drawing and placinghandprints on a Volvo EC210 CL.

To Chadwick-BaRoss’ MarketingManager, Jacob Adams, involvement in thecommunity is exceedingly valuable.

“When we contribute locally the resultsare visible, not only to the company, but tothe community as well. Whether it is assist-ing a nearby school with training, supportinglocal emergency departments or rushing a

critical piece of machinery to a job site, ourservice doesn’t stop at the door.”

Donations were encouraged but not nec-essary. Ages of mark makers ranged from 1to 70. The proceeds from the event went toLog A Load for Kids and The Children’sMiracle Network. The total donation to thetwo charities was matched by Chadwick-BaRoss.

years, that company had moved from usingshovels for excavation to projects with mil-lion dollar budgets. Observing this type ofgrowth inspired Read to start his own com-pany.

“I started out by doing water and sewerservice, then expanded to helical piers. It wasrough finding work in this economy. Then, came a project that involved waterproofingexisting buildings. This project expanded thecompany. That’s when the waterproofingside came in. We became a distributor forEPRO waterproofing products,” said Read.

With only four employees, the familyowned-company can solve nearly anyclient’s geotechnical issues for any project.NEHE’s service area includes all of NewEngland, upstate New York, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey.

NEHE offers many services — both resi-dential and commercial. They include water-proofing, damp proofing, crack repair, seal-ing, drainage and much more. A large part ofthe operation includes installing HelicalAnchors Inc. products for customers.NEHE’s helical services include the installa-tion of mini push piers, underpinning, dem-olition, site work and wind turbine founda-tions. According to Read, using helical piersreduces project costs on marine projects thathave unsuitable material in the building pad.

Read took special pride in his biggestproject to date. At the Royal Crest Apartmentcomplex, NEHE exposed the footing of all11 structures, and repaired and prepped the

foundation walls to accept the new water-proofing. Ecoline-R, with a dimple boardmade by EPRO, was installed along with asub-drain and trunk line to accept the down-spouts. NEHE completed the project on timewith minimal disturbance to the residents.

Much of Read’s success may not havebeen possible without the help and dedica-tion of his family. He started his companyduring a challenging time two years ago, butwife Tracey and his children continue to helpand inspire him.

“It’s been tough through this economy, but with family behind you, you find a way.I would like to turn the company over to myson and daughter when they get older. I’mteaching my son how to do some of thethings I learned to do as a child, right now.”said Read.

Read thinks about what other professionhe would in order to have all the same vaca-tions as his kids, but is not sure what hewould go into. Driving down the road andjust looking at all the houses, buildings androads he has done over the years is thereward that has kept him in the business forso many years.

BOSTON (AP) The state Senate has approved a bill thatwould provide $300 million to cities and towns for road andbridge projects, a $100 million increase over last year.

Municipal officials have been pressing lawmakers toapprove the so-called Chapter 90 funds as the spring con-struction season begins.

The measure passed May 2 also has been approved by theHouse but needs a final vote in both chambers before goingto Gov. Deval Patrick’s desk.

Senate Republican Leader Bruce Tarr said he’s concernedthat the funding for cities and towns could yet fall victim todisagreements between the governor and lawmakers over theamount of new revenue contained in a broader transportationfinance plan.

That bill, calling for $500 million in new taxes, is current-ly being negotiated by a House-Senate conference commit-tee.

Kelly Believes Contractor Award Goes to All Employees

Still not knowing who the winner would be, the 12 finalists for Equipment World magazine’s Contractor of theYear Award were flown into Las Vegas for the announcement.

The ability to drill under structures like roads and bridges, and even under water,is a key advantage of horizontal directional drilling technology. Here, two ETTIemployees follow the underwater path of the drill.

ETTI has capitalized on the building of natural gasdistribution infrastructure throughout the state ofMaine.

Enterprise Trenchless Technologies Inc. — ETTI — specializes in horizontal direc-tional drilling, or HDD, a construction method that allows a drill to be steered andtracked from the surface without disrupting the surface.
