From the President’s desk

This is the last e‐news before the 50th Intersteno Congress starts in Budapest on 18th July. The Board members and I would like to present readers and friends with the results of the activities carried on during the 2013‐2015 term.

We do not have the vision or competence to describe how Intersteno has changed after 50 Congresses. Others with greater experience and knowledge will certainly be able to do so. Our duty is to present the work done and set out our aims for the future. Nevertheless, we cannot do so without a wider vision of the history and of the aims of the Federation.

Intersteno changed its Statute 12 years ago, in Rome: from that 44th Congress in Rome, thanks to the changes

made, the efforts of the management have always been oriented to making this entity stronger, more open, more efficient, more important.

Yes, we dare say that after two years’ work Intersteno is stronger. The financial situation is good and we have finally the goal of directly organizing the biannual Congress, with the risks and the benefits that this implies. As you can see at the intersteno2015.org website over 500 people have already registered and we hope that many more will join in the coming weeks. This is a success for the entire Intersteno community and confirmation of the long‐lasting interest showed in us from all over the world. Most of the Board’s activities have been devoted to organizing the Congress; therefore the figures are comforting and satisfying for our team. On the other hand we hope that Intersteno becomes even stronger with the support of more countries and with a deeper involvement of country groups.

We can say that Intersteno is stronger also because it is younger. Apart from including a consultant for youth on the Board, we wanted to stress our concern for younger people by reducing the registration and the competition fees and supporting the youth aims in the domains of Intersteno. In future we will pursue specific projects, such as cooperation with UE for youth mobility and the constitution of a “Youth Forum” with its own representative on the Council. In a word we want to favour youth and thus bring into Intersteno its modern approaches and fresh ideas. Only by doing so we will be able to give Intersteno newer and stronger opportunities.

Intersteno is certainly more open. Organizing Council and IPRS meetings in Shanghai in October 2014 was challenging but gave us another chance to look beyond the European borders and gain the interest of other countries and professionals. This aim was pursued even through the Internet Keyboard competition: the last one‐ just ended ‐ saw the participation of 19 countries and an increasing number of concurrents; the cooperation between technologies and software reached new goals and began to overcome the limits of non‐alphabetical language implementation. We started with the Japanese language, but Intersteno will continue its investigation into other languages such as Chinese, Korean as well as Arabic, with the aim of welcoming concurrents from those countries in the world championships too.

Another tool for making Intersteno stronger and more open are the arrangements for individual and associated memberships. The proceedings are to be simplified, with the aim of meeting new friends and according to these members an adequate role in the Council and in the General Assembly. In the last two years we have provided a specific consultant for membership and opened the Intersteno doors to professionals or associations, which may bring new energies and resources to the Federation. Country


Groups remain the backbone of the Federation but sometimes they cannot represent directly the complex and articulated scenario of professions in the domains of Intersteno.

We have also aimed to make Intersteno more efficient. I told you about our proven capability demonstrated by the organizing of a successful Congress. Finally, in the next two years, an Intersteno Secretariat will help the Board in a number of duties. This will allow the management to devote time to activities that could not be carried out earlier because of the heavy administrative burden. A specific and adequate amount of money has been devoted to this action.

The “Call for projects” through which members can be supported in international actions is a key idea that will enlarge the Intersteno activities through the involvements of more people and associations. So far we have not been able to show good results: in the future Intersteno we must ensure that we market the “Call” in a better way.

The activities of Jury, Scientific Committee and IPRS were improved in the last two years. With the aim of reflecting the changes in the labour market and in professions, the competition rules are submitted to continuous adjustment, thanks to the efficient and expert work of the Jury. These corrections guarantee due attention to the aim of fair and professional competitions.

The IPRS reached many colleagues in Parliaments and other professional frameworks; it supported Intersteno with expertise and technological enhancements, especially on the occasions of IPRS meetings. The Scientific Committee is an important clue to the Intersteno vision of the future and works to give us the broader horizon needed to guarantee successful actions such as:

• the creation of an Intersteno digital library that connects the “shorthand” bibliographical resources in various countries;

• the request for recognizing “Shorthand” as a Unesco masterpiece, motivated by the shared awareness of the historical, social and cultural value of shorthand, which embraces traditional professions as well as new skills and techniques;

• the proposal for an “Intersteno Set of Professional Competencies”, which will lead to a “certification program”.

These are some of the results that we present to you and that we wish to be enhanced and completed in the future. Furthermore, the Jury, IPRS and Scientific Committee will cooperate with the Board in writing a “final report” at the end of the next Congress which will include a state of the art summary together with the results of the event coupled with the Intersteno vision of the future.

Finally we think that Intersteno is more important. The entire rebuild of the intersteno.org website thanks to the cooperation of the Board, Gian Paolo Trivulzio and Emrah Kuyumku (Turkish Group) is a strategic step towards easing access to Intersteno news and activities, as well as to the huge archive of documents and information that we have accumulated. Intersteno is daily present on the social network and keeps attracting new friends. Statistics tells how much we are known in the world and give us the opportunity of enlarging our community beyond today’s limits.

I hope you will appreciate our work and the value of these results. The 50th Congress will soon be opened ‐ another Intersteno Jubilee, another step in our long history.

IPRS meetings and general conference programmes

The world is changing at an impressive rate. ICT technologies and digitalization are more and more part of our everyday life as well as big data and cloud computing operations. In this framework, information is disseminated very rapidly, through forms of communication that go beyond the conventional distinction between spoken and written language.

In this context where speed is crucial for surfing information and communication, people start speaking by writing and writing by speaking, with tangible effects on education and professions. On the one hand, fast writing is all the more crucial. Schools are even encouraged to teach pupils how to write on a PC keyboard and in some cases to abandon handwriting for didactical reasons. On the other hand, ordinary Internet users and online newspapers are tempted to be the first to report or comment on a piece of news. To do so they sometimes do not even check the source of their information and continually run the risk of sharing misreported or even fake news.

With the intention of answering the many questions this context poses, INTERSTENO is organizing the biennial Conference on Information and Communication Processing in the framework of the 50th Congress in Budapest on July 21st, 2015.

Internet contest The marathon by 1724 participants successfully ended

Thanks to 286 teachers a total of 1816 participants were registered in the 13th edition of our competition: unfortunately for several reasons only 1724 were able to attend. In any case, once again, this event proved to be appreciated in 20 countries and for the first time attracted over 100 Japanese competitors.

The following table show the participants by age. About 80% are ‘young’, that is up to 20 years, as expected, but it is interesting to see that about 20% are over 20 with ages going up to 76, which demonstrates a continuing interest after the traditional school‐leaving age. This speaks of a good quantity and quality of people interested in taking part in the World Championships and, hopefully, prepared to take on responsibilities in our Federation.

For the first time ever – Russian SpeechtoText Communication Access!

An important event, which will no doubt influence the development of information processing in Russia, took place on April 1st ‐ 2nd.

Real‐time written interpretation of speeches in the Russian language was held for the first time in history at the session of the United Nations Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

Written speech‐to‐text Interpreting was provided remotely. The session took place in Geneva while the typists were in three different cities: Moscow, St Petersburg and Sevastopol. Amazing!

It was done by our heroes: Eleonora Alekseevna Lukina, Alexander Sidorenko and Igor Gagin!

The project organizer, manager and native English speech‐to‐text provider, Kimberly Turnage, greatly appreciated our typists’ professionalism:

“The team was so wonderful to work with! Professional, wanting a challenge, meeting the challenge and then wanting to do more! I have so much respect for the Russian team and what they were able to accomplish. I am looking forward to the next event and even more events like this one.”

“What are my impressions? The large preliminary preparation for the job was really helpful. And the awareness that we are participating in such a good, kind cause, and for

the first time in history in the Russian language, constantly supported, and I would even say, inspired. There were a few hitches and curious things, though. My netbook started lagging behind during my typing. The text I was writing appeared on the screen with delays, which, at that time, seemed to me absolutely enormous. And a speaker over there, a thousand kilometres away, kept talking!

Fortunately, the guys helped me out. They were on their guard, always ready to join in. Our Administrator – the project organizer and manager, wonderfully energetic and optimistic, Kimberly Turnage ‐ switched the channel over to them. Actually, I didn’t have an opportunity to type: Just sat feeling jealous of them (initially, each of us was to type for two periods of 30 minutes each). I could be sorry for myself, but as a team we coped brilliantly, providing the continuity of the work. So, everything was fine.

...The guys seemed to be flying after the speakers on wings! Mind, written interpreting isn’t an easy and simple task. One needs an incredibly high typing speed as well as an analytical approach to the oral speech being converted into a written text, literacy, a good memory, an ability to instantly translate oral speech into a written text, and general knowledge… Definitely, an incredible love for your hard work. Plus strong will power, concentration and sports rage, boldness! In short, it’s a true championship challenge; every time it’s like your own Olympics. I’m really happy that now we have young professionals who can accomplish the task!”

Igor Gagin responds:

“I’m very glad we coped with the job. During the work I had the following problems: 1. Some speakers uttered the words indistinctly; I couldn’t hear many of the words, and

had to wait for the next words in order to use the right case, gender, etc. But it was impossible to wait because my audio‐memory isn’t sufficiently trained. In my second period I wrote what I heard and left out a lot.

2. Some speakers spoke too fast to write them down, so mistakes were inevitable. 3. During the work I got really stressed. It was quite a hard job. 4. For future projects of this kind one should prepare beforehand and have a system of

autocorrect. It would make everything much easier. 5. A little bit about the cooperation with AvtandiLine and Antik. They explained a lot

about the job to me and also translated from English! I am really grateful.”

Alexander Sidorenko responds:

“At the start of my period of interpreting I was very nervous and tense. But once I got relaxed, everything went swimmingly. The speakers talked with accents, mostly not fast, so we were able to write the transcript and immediately sent it to the project manager. All you needed was knowledge of the subject, an ability to adjust quickly, a high typing speed, concentration on what was being uttered and a little bit of smartness. The job seemed quite easy to me.”

Communication Access Provision can provide ‐ and is providing all around the world ‐ a service in various languages to meet the beautifully diverse community that we are. As service providers every day is different, every challenge something we rise to and do our professional best. It takes togetherness and skill to do the extraordinary. Communication Access brings us together in a better understanding, benefiting the whole.


Seminar on technologies and respeaking

On Wednesday 23rd April 2015, in Mons (Belgium) the Centre d’Etudes et de Recherche Multimédias (CERM) of the Faculty of Translation and Interpretation of the University of Mons organized a seminar on technologies and respeaking. The first part of the day was dedicated to scientific interventions, while the second part of the seminar was characterized by concrete projects and challenges.

The first speakers were prof. Hayssam Safar, director of CERM, and prof. Najwa Hamaoui, head of the Arabic department, who introduced the rationale behind the seminar. Ilaria Dodero, PhD researcher at the University of Mons and organizer of the event, talked of live subtitling and of accessibility and introduced the topic to the audience, by explaining that respeaking is a recent technique to produce written text very

rapidly, by simply dictating it to a software through a microphone. She also added that the applications are so numerous and the training so short that it may be used basically in every aspect of our daily life.

The floor was then given to Dr. Carlo Eugeni, researcher at Roma Tre University and chairman of the Scientific Committee of Intersteno, who entered into details by talking of the legal framework and of the social, professional and technological potential of respeaking. Francesca Marchionne, President of onA.I.R. and the Intersteno Italian delegate described how the projects the International Association of Respeaking that she leads turns this potential into practice.

Then Gunter Saerens, of the Flemish‐speaking Belgian public broadcaster VRT, explained what they do at the subtitling offices, by exemplifying how operationally live and semi‐live subtitling is done through respeaking. Anthony Ozorai, of the French‐speaking Belgian

public broadcaster RTBF concluded the scientific part by illustrating the projects for making the subtitling unit fully operational thanks to respeaking, which is not yet developed there.

In the afternoon, the many participants, including Georgette Sante, leader of the Intersteno Jury, talked about very real applications and potential applications of respeaking in daily life. In particular, Daniela Benito Ulibarri and Frédéric Pizzoferrato, of the not‐for‐profit association Les Cèdres, talked of the hard work they do in order to make the inclusion of hard‐of‐hearing students at school or university a reality.

The seminar was entirely translated into sign language by Amalia Ruz Gomez, of Les Cèdres. It was very stimulating and gave birth to a community of people discussing respeaking as a tool to solve many daily‐life problems.

Belgium – awarding of prizes in the National competition in text production and word processing

The ceremony took place on 25th April last and was attended by many competitors and their parents as well as by teachers and authorities.

Hungary sad news: death of Dr. Kálmán Kalotay

„It’s great to be great, but it’s greater to be human.” (Will Rogers)

Dr. Kálmán Kalotay (1930 ‐ 2015)

Dr. Kálmán Kalotay (Doctor of Law) ‐ an outstanding and determined personality of the Hungarian stenographers’ and typists’ society, a professor who celebrated his diamond jubilee with the College in Nyíregyháza (Hungary), and founder of department. His name has been connected, among others, with the launching of the training of a teachers of stenography and typewriting in Hungary (1975) and the reform of the Statute of the United Hungarian Stenography (1984).

He was born on 20th May, 1930 in Sarkad, County Hajdú‐Bihar of Hungary. He became acquainted with stenography in his secondary school years and acquired the qualification of a bureau assistant (stenographer and typist) at the medium level in the School of Shorthand and Typewriting in Debrecen. He was a member of the special group that first acquired the qualification of teacher of stenography and typewriting in 1953 at the College of Accountancy (previously College of Economy). Later he studied history and the Hungarian language at the Eötvös Lóránd University, where he also graduated in law in 1959.

He lived almost his whole life as a teacher. Just simply, he was TEACHER for everyone. He started his teacher’s carrier in Hatvan then continued in Debrecen. In shorthand he was regional and then national supervisor and subject adviser for the secondary schools of economics in six counties of Hungary (1970 ‐ 1976).

When, in 1975, the training of teachers of shorthand and typewriting began at the Bessenyei György College for the Training of Teachers in Nyíregyháza, he was asked to elaborate the training system and to deliver the lectures. The Department of Shorthand and Typewriting became independent in 1977, when he was appointed as head of department. As such training has not previously been at a high educational level in Hungary, he had not only to draw up the network of subjects and examinations but had also to write study books, lecture notes and training aids.

published by the Hungarian “Journal of Stenographers and Typists”, and then the journal “World of Words”; he held lectures, commemorations and trainings in several places on questions concerning the profession.

As a result of his teaching activity embracing several decades numerous colleagues teaching stenography and typewriting have him to thank for their knowledge and vocation. He had friendly relations with his students, was interested in everyone’s lot and success and followed up the life of his students over many years.

He made a special point of organising competitions. In his view these were truly able to animate students. He considered it important for young people to take part in national and international competitions and did his best to obtain the financial resources to assist them. In this way several students were able to take part in the INTERSTENO competitions and win world championships in stenography in the youth category.

In whatever way he could he was willing to help. He was excellent not only in professional questions but he turned towards people with good words, with love and empathy. In 1992 he retired but continued taking part in the training of college students as a retired professor up to 1995.

He shared his unique professional knowledge with his students with infinite patience and humour. With his colleagues and students he was always honest, humane, understanding and supportive. When he saw it was time he was not afraid of passing his place to the young; he trusted them and steadily helped them.

Between 1998 and 2013 he was president of the National Association of Hungarian Stenographers and Typists. Up to his death he actively took part in the professional life of stenographers and typists. With his optimism he inspired everyone to preserve and care for shorthand as a special cultural value and to widely spread up‐to‐date writing techniques.

INTERSTENO Hungary Magyar Gyorsírók és Gépírók Országos Szövetsége

Italy meeting in Bologna and activities for training competitors to the worldwide competitions in Budapest

During the meeting in Bologna on 12th April the Italian group was able to consolidate the results of the many activities carried out since September last and to decide about sponsoring the Congress and the competition fees for the competitors in Budapest.

In addition much work was done in June so that every competitor could train and attend a specific test in the various competition formulae of Intersteno. These tests were done using a video platform, which facilitated the exchange ideas and information by people attending competitions for the first time.

Taki software was made available to competitors to test their results on a 30 minutes typing example. In addition many texts formatted in the worldwide text production competitions were prepared to enable participants to become fluent in reading the competition text and to quickly move from one page to the other.

It is worth mentioning that an exchange of ideas is on the way with the Italian Minister of Education with a view to including our Internet competition among the so called ‘Eccellenze’ i.e. a set of special projects for rewarding students who are achieving very good results in several subjects.

Japan participation to the Internet contest and worldwide competition

As announced in our previous release over 100 competitors from Japan took part for the first time in our Internet competition, writing not only in their native language but in many others with good speed and accuracy. These results have generated surprise and comments from which discussions took place on this and the other side of the world. A new bridge was built, linking such a distant country.

The project was carried out in about one year by an Intersteno group composed of Gian Paolo Trivulzio, Marco Olivo, Takahiro Sumino, Tsuguo Kaneko, Tatsuya Kawahara and Carlo Eugeni. Georgette Sante, Danny Devriendt and Fausto Ramondelli were constantly kept informed of the main steps. Many tests were made by a staff of typists located in Japan.

Full information about this project and the additional improvements will be released in Budapest during the Conference, on July 21st at about 10.15 and the title will be ‘Challenges in implementing the Japanese language for Intersteno competitions'. You are all invited to attend and to submit questions.

Moreover, 13 Japanese competitors will be in Budapest for the text production competition. They will compete in English for reasons that will be made evident on that occasion.

I hope you have read the comments of our President on the first pages of this release, in which he hopes that similar projects can be carried out for the Chinese and Korean languages so that we may have these competitors attending our competitions in the best way. Of course I agree and I hope that we will have some early volunteers.

Switzerland results of the National keyboarding competition

A total of 236 competitors took part in Swiss 2015, the 18th edition of the keyboarding competition, which, for the past 10 years has been carried out fully online.

Thanks to the motivation displayed by 17 teachers, accuracy and speed have gradually increased so that this year there were three competitors who reached over 400 characters per minute, so qualifying to be able to attend the worldwide competition.

Unfortunately not all of them will be able to be in Budapest but at least one will represent Switzerland in the text production competition.

The participants showed a lot of enthusiasm and achieved good results!

On Saturday March 28th 2015 at 9:00 am the first participants arrived at the Corlaer College (school for secondary and vocational education) in Nijkerk, The Netherlands. A


total of 37 names were checked off at the reception desk. Also present that Saturday were those accompanying the participants: teachers, family, friends, as well as the competition organizers and their volunteers. Altogether some 80 people enlivened the otherwise empty school building that morning.

The competition participants completed a total of three texts: two in Dutch and one in English. Each test lasted exactly 10 minutes. Thanks to excellent preparation such as the automatic correction program and the program for processing the results, Bernhard Boot was able to communicate the results shortly after 12 noon. Many young participants were called on stage to receive their prize and have their picture taken by Annet Schoorlemmer. The results of the try‐out competition in audiotranscription (audiotyping) were announced just before closing time.
