With continued expansion of organizationalstorage allocation requirements, the timerequired for file-based data backup alsocontinues to increase. Yet the time allottedfor this data backup remains constant,

D iskeeper 10 represents a milestonein the advancement of defragmen-

tation software with the addition ofIntelligent File Access AccelerationSequencing Technology (I-FAAST). Exist-ing features are presented in a stream-lined user interface. New users are cer-tain to find Diskeeper easy to use, yetcomprehensive in its capabilities. Thissection looks at key new and enhancedfeatures in Diskeeper 10.

Enhanced User Interface To present its many features in the mostintuitive way possible, the user interfaceof Diskeeper 10 is a significant leap for-ward. The new design is the result ofextensive usability testing; it provides aclean and intuitive user experience.

The updated Diskeeper 10 interface isbased on a console crafted for bothsimplified “basic” use as well as“advanced” product configuration. Thisconsole design is consistent across allDiskeeper editions; however, the HomeEdition does not include advanced con-figuration options. See Figure 1.

The redesigned user console featuresa menu bar, toolbar, quick launch pane,computer pane, tabbed dashboard,and a status bar.

Menu Bar. Alternative access to thefeatures from the Toolbar and QuickLaunch Pane.

Toolbar. Offers quick access to com-monly used controls.

Quick Launch Pane. Provides easyaccess to commonly used Diskeeperfeatures as well as shortcuts for com-mon tasks.

Computer Pane. Lists all supporteddisk volumes detected on the com-puter. Displays general informationabout each volume and schedules thathave been established for them.

Tabbed Controls. The tabs in the

Dashboard area allow quick selectionamong the Volume Map, Job Report, JobLog, and Historical Report.

Dashboard Area. This is the main“Operations Center” for Diskeeper. Eachtabbed pane shows a different aspect ofyour disks’ condition.

Status Bar. Displays the progress ofcurrently running Diskeeper tasks. Alsoshows folder location, name of filebeing moved, size of the file fragmentbeing moved, and total file size.

I-FAAST intelligence allows Disk-eeper to adapt to changing situations;if the demands on a given systemchange (such as long-dormant files

I/O Smart EnhancementsDiskeeper’s I/O Smar t has beenenhanced to completely eliminate per-formance slows related to disk I/Osincurred during defragmentation. I/OSmart technology actively “listens” forI/O requests. During a Diskeeperdefragmentation job, if another appli-cation or process needs access to thehard drive, Diskeeper intelligentlypauses defragmentation until the otherprogram’s I/O requests are fulfilled.Once that happens, Diskeeper getsthe go-ahead to resume defragmenta-tion until another request comesalong. Combined with its high-speedengine, Diskeeper can easily defrag-ment using the “spaces” between I/Orequests, even on busy servers.

Core Defragmentation Engine Enhancements Improvements to innovative Diskeepertechnology provide enhanced defrag-mentation in extremely low free spaceconditions (even for very large files) andextremely thorough free space defrag-mentation. Further advancements to“comprehensive” defragmentation con-solidate a volume’s free space into oneor a small handful of chunks.

Terabyte Volume Engine (TVE) Improvements The enhanced TVE has improvementsto consolidate free space more thor-oughly. The TVE is specially designedfor volumes with large numbers of files.It’s the fastest and most resource-conservative defragmentation technol-ogy ever developed. Diskeeper userswith large volumes benefit from fasterdefragmentation, lower overhead anddramatically reduced total cost ofownership (TCO).

Frag Shield Fragmentation of the Master File Table(MFT) on NTFS volumes and paging filescan seriously impair system perform-ance and reliability. Since the Windowsoperating system relies heavily onthese, the effect of their fragmentationis often much greater than when a nor-mal file is fragmented. Since specialmeasures must be taken to defragmentthese files, it is better to prevent theirfragmentation in the first place. TheFrag Shield feature configures thesecritical system files optimally, helping tokeep them contiguous from the start.

Defragmentation Methods Diskeeper supports several types ofdefragmentation; each suits a particu-lar need.

• Quick Defragmentation.This method minimizes defragmenta-tion time by placing the emphasis ondefragmenting files, rather than con-solidating free space. This methodcompletes faster and uses fewer sys-tem resources.

• Recommended Defragmentation. This is the default and provides a provenand balanced mix of file defragmenta-tion and free space consolidation. Ituses slightly more system resources.

• Comprehensive Defragmentation. This method performs additional freespace consolidation. It requires addi-tional processing and time. Free spaceconsolidation improvements are real-ized gradually over time. This methodis best suited for scheduled defrag-mentation jobs; it is not available forManual Defragmentation Jobs.

For any given defragmentation method,Diskeeper provides an option to moreefficiently defragment larger files. Whenselected, large files are defragmentedonly as much as needed to improveaccess. This option can save consider-able system resources and shortendefragmentation jobs.

Definitely. Diskeeper supports all levels of soft-ware-based and hardware-based RAID arrays.

RAID arrays are often used to increase systemperformance. In a RAID array of four disk drives,for example, a file can be accessed up to fourtimes as fast as on a single drive. This isbecause the file is spread between the fourdrives, and all four drives can be accessed atthe same time. Because of this, the file can be retrieved much more rapidly. However, thesefile parts can become fragmented on the indi-vidual drives, just like the files on a single diskdrive, which reduces the speed advantagegained by RAID. In fact, the effects of fragmen-tation can be more obvious in a RAID array thanin a single disk drive.

Diskeeper defragments RAID arrays just as itwould single disk drives. Diskeeper sees theRAID environment just as the file system does.That is, Diskeeper defragments the virtual drive.Diskeeper improves the speed and performanceof a RAID environment by eliminating wastefuland unnecessary I/Os from being issued by thefile system. In our four-drive array example, itwould defragment the pieces of the file on eachseparate drive as though they were separatefiles. Diskeeper moves pieces of a file asdirected by the RAID controller.

Diskeeper is certified for Windows clustering. Torun Diskeeper in a clustered environment, per-form the following steps:

1. On the system that has control of the clusteredvolume(s), install Diskeeper and schedule it.

2. Fail the clustered volumes over to the othersystem, install Diskeeper and schedule it.

After you perform these steps, Diskeeper willrun on the clustered system that remains inoperation after the other clustered system hasexperienced a system failure. Diskeeper willalso run on the clustered volume in an active-active cluster, defragmenting the clustered vol-ume on the system that currently has control ofthe volume.

Note: The Diskeeper Boot-Time Defragmentation will not runon clustered volumes.
