KICKS OFFThe weekend of February 6 and 7 saw the 2016
Australian and International GT / Sportscar racing
season get underway with the 14th running of the
Liqui-Moly Bathurst 12 Hour endurance race.
In a sign of how this event has grown since its very
humble inception back in 1991, this year’s race
around the clock heralded the start of the newly
created Intercontinental GT Challenge. This is a
global championship covering 3 major international
Sportscar endurance races that also includes the Spa
24 Hour in Belgium and Malaysia’s Sepang 12 Hour.
With a number of world leading factory supported
teams joined by independent teams from all over the
globe, along with the world’s most accomplished GT
drivers and several leading V8 Supercar star drivers
taking part, this year’s race did not disappoint.
The quality of the Bathurst 12 Hour class of 2016
was exceptional, with teams including Bentley Team
M-Sport, Audi Pheonix Racing, Nismo (Nissan)
Motorsport, and Tekno McLaren racing against several
Australasian and New Zealand based GT teams.
This unique race showcases the world’s most desirable
cars, appearing almost exactly as they do on the
roads, in a display of outstanding power, pace and
reliability over 12 hours. All of this on the very
unforgiving 6.2 kilometre Mount Panorama circuit
from a pre-dawn start to an early evening finish.
Qualifying for starting grid positions this year saw
history made at Bathurst when New Zealander Shane
Van Gisbergen, driving a $1 million dollar plus McLaren
650S GT3, recorded a breathtaking 2m01.286s lap.
This effort took Bathurst lap times into the two minute
and one second barrier for the first time. To put the
speed of Van Gisbergen’s outstanding qualifying lap
into perspective, the top V8 Supercar qualifying time
(set by another Kiwi - Fabian Coulthard) at Bathurst
last year was a 2:06.183, which is more than five
seconds slower. Van Gisbergen also bettered the 2015
Bathurst 12 Hour pole position lap time by more than
1.3 seconds and he was also half a second clear of
the second fastest qualifier, Audi R8 racer Rene Rast
from Germany.
With each car shared by three drivers who must
complete a minimum number of laps across the 12
hours of the race, with mandatory break times in
between, success in this motor race is determined by
many factors. Not least of which is the consistency of
each driver along with timely pit work for the many re-
fuelling, tyre and unscheduled repair based pit stops
that take place throughout a race of this distance.
The start of the Bathurst 12 Hour is really something
to behold. The experience of being out on the circuit
in total darkness at 5:00am is something so incredibly
different, particularly when you also see fans out
there at that time as well. The eerie silence is suddenly
broken as bright racing headlights light up the
mountain circuit accompanied by the unmistakable
roar created by Bentley, McLaren, Lamborghini, Audi,
Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, Nissan and the rest as they
started circulating the circuit, ready for a spectacular
rolling start.
Then it’s on, the decibels increase massively as the
engines howl across the pre-dawn sky. Red hot brake
disc rotors and flaming exhausts light up the track
as the racing is fierce from the very start. It is a
mad battle for positions during the first hour, with
everyone eager to remain within touch of the leaders
and on the lead lap in order to be in with a chance
of success, twelve long and incredibly demanding
hours later.
Bathurst 12-hour
a great year in Motor Racing.
C A P R I C O R N I G N I T I O N A P R I L 2 0 1 6 5
- by Paul Marinelli
Bathurst 12-hour
GT Endurance racing is as much a game of strategy
as it is a race of outright pace and all of the team
engineers spend the long race looking at data from
the cars, seeking ways to improve car performance,
fuel economy and maximising pit stop opportunities in
order to lose the least time as possible for the essential
pit stops that are required throughout the race.
It was McLaren’s race with Shane van Gisbergen,
Alvaro Parente (POR) and Jonathan Webb (AUS)
holding out a fast finishing Katsumasa Chiyo (with Rick
Kelly and Florian Strauss) in the Nissan GT-R to record
an inaugural victory for the British manufacturer at
Mount Panorama. The McLaren victory came despite
a total of 13 visits to pit lane, a drive-through penalty
and even a brief moment when the car stopped
dead on the main straight for no apparent reason,
forcing Portuguese racer Parente to re-set the car’s
electronics while stranded on the track!
The final winning margin after 12 hours was just 1.2
seconds after the Japanese Nissan superstar, Chiyo,
stormed home during the closing laps.
Third place went to Bentley Team M-Sport’s Matt
Bell, Steven Kane and Guy Smith who were strong all
day in their Continental GT3. A total of five different
brands finished in the top five with the Phoenix Racing
Audi R8 finishing fourth and the Erebus Motorsport
Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3 fifth.
The highly competitive race saw the leaders complete
a total of 297 laps (1,845km) which created a new race
record, featuring no less than 29 lead changes across
its duration, which was also a new record. There were
a total of 13 Safety Car periods that covered 40 laps
in total, with 20 out of the 36 starters making it to
the end of the grueling race.

Bugatti Chiron
Future Rides
Bugatti is undoubtedly one of the most exclusive automakers in the world. For years it had just one model, the Veyron, sold at a price well over $1 million. The Veyron's successor, the Bugatti Chiron, was recently unveiled at the 2016 Geneva Auto Show and reaffirms the company's exclusivity and super sports car prowess.
There are quite a few upgrades to the existing Bugatti Veyron, most notably, engine performance. In order to achieve a 25 percent increase in performance compared to its predecessor, almost every single part of the engine was looked at and newly developed.
This rather daunting feat of engineering resulted in the W16 engine of the Bugatti Chiron being able to produce an unbelievable 1,103 kW from its 8 litres of displacement. The engine reaches its maximum torque of 1,600 Nm thanks to the turbocharger which Bugatti developed itself. There are 4 turbochargers in total, two are designed to be always on, while the other two are electronically actuated, spun up when the driver wants more acceleration. This double-powered configuration results in unbelievable acceleration, catapulting the Chiron from 0-100km/h in an astounding 2.5 seconds, reaching a top speed around the 420 km/h range.
The lines and aesthetics of the Chiron are equally as impressive as its performance. It is clear to see that the styling is an evolution of the existing Veyron however, much like its predecessor, it only sports two seats surrounded by a full carbon fibre body. The mid-set engine sits behind the cabin. The Chiron incorporates functional design as many of the strategic curves and lines serve as air intakes, cooling the engine.
The interior is befitting of an exclusive super sports car of this ilk, using the finest leathers and fittings with a "no-plastic philosophy". LED headlights make up an "eight-eye face," while an active wing on the rear serves as an air brake. 20-inch wheels on front and 21-inch wheels at the rear make up a staggered set, with eight titanium brake pistons up front and six on the rears.
Bugatti will produce only 500 examples of the Chiron super sports car. With this level of exclusivity, the Chiron will not come cheap, with a price tag of $2.6 million. Even at that price, Bugatti has already taken around 180 pre-orders.

Don got word of the Plymouth through a friend in the U.S. and discovered that it had been sitting in a garage under a car cover since 1971 and belonged to the 80 year old owner of the fast food chain, Taco Bell. The car wasn’t officially for sale but it wasn’t untill the wives had a discussion that the car was sold.
The car is in all original condition including the paint, striking blue interior and Good Year tyres. It also comes with the original sales document and build sheet. The old girl only has 7135 miles on the clock and the log book says that the first and only service was done at 1025 miles from the dealer back in 1971.
The left hand drive Plymouth boasts a V8 383 high performance engine, Dana diff and a 3-speed automatic with a column shift. The detailing on this car is phenomenal and really gives us a snapshot of the quintessential 1970’s era muscle cars, with the road runner scooting down the side- “Beep Beep!” Don commented “Its really hard to find a car like this in such good condition and that’s why it caught my eye.”
Don is extremely excited to have this car in his collection and plans to drive the old girl to work occasionally as well as the odd cruise on a Sunday with the family.

Capricorn Tech TipsCapricorn Tech Tips provides Members with access to valuable technical tips from Capricorn Preferred Suppliers. Vehicle and Category: Holden Jackaroo 3.0L D fitted with Isuzu Oil Strainer Gaskets
Replacement of Oil Strainer Gaskets
Isuzu engine modification to be carried out to prevent turbocharger failure. Due to the hardening of a flexible gasket on the oil suction pipe to strainer in the sump, the oil pump draws a mixture of air and oil causing a reduction in oil pressure. This causes damage to the turbo. The modification only needs to be carried out once. The upgraded Isuzu part number is 8971377980, item #140 (pictured right).
The sump must be removed to perform the modification. Before refilling the sump after the work is complete, it is important to allow the sealant sufficient time to set. Failure to do so could result in sealant entering the turbocharger oil galleries, causing serious damage.

A job lands in your workshop that you feel is going to be technically challenging.
You may instinctively also feel that you might need some help with this one – so where to look?
Technical help is out there, but it may not necessarily be as free or accessible as you might like, or expect.
An example:
A Peugeot with air conditioning problems, that had already been to two workshops, with the advice to take it to a dealership for proper diagnostics, ended up in a third aftermarket workshop. The difference between this workshop and the others, was that it worked diligently on establishing good relationships with a range of suppliers and networks.
The basic checks were done, but this workshop was wondering why it could only extract one fault code in the engine module, a permanent code that could not be cleared and was related to the engine’s electronic thermostat. The question was: could this engine code be stopping the A/C compressor from engaging?
Time to tap into some trusted technical friendships.
With each call to a technical network and data providers the situation became clearer – yes, the A/C clutch could be affected by this code.
Advice received from the local Peugeot dealer changed the game play.
It seems the engine electronic thermostat had been an issue for some time. The part had been superseded a few times and the current new part was always in stock.
The part was installed, and as predicted, the compressor was now engaging, the fault codes were gone and all was well.
The gathering of all the information that led to a perfect fix was easy, but naturally it came with a cost – perhaps not an immediate cash-over-the-counter cost, but a cost nevertheless.
This workshop is a paid-up member of a technical network; it subscribes to several data providers; and because it bought all Peugeot spares from one selected dealer, getting them to part with useful information was an expected bonus of the relationship.
Good, reliable technical information is gold in the workshop landscape, so it is worth aligning yourself with products and services that can be really useful in your time of need.
Having a network of suppliers and products almost guarantees access to good quality technical advice. You just can’t put a price on these relationships.
With diagnostics becoming more complex as car makers keep adding to their technologies, all workshops should compile their own list of quality contacts and make it a workshop rule to stay loyal to their products and services. In the long run, the costs involved in belonging to, or dealing with, a trusted network of data providers, wholesalers and yes, dealerships, should be regarded as investments in the business.
In the case of buying parts, chasing the best price from a multitude of suppliers is not only a time wasting exercise, but doesn’t provide too many avenues for building trusting and useful relationships.
Technical help is out there - but it's a two way street
Good, reliable technical
information is gold in the
workshop landscape...

Clipsal 500 Adelaide 2016The Clipsal 500 Adelaide, a round of the V8 Supercar Championship Series, is Australia's largest domestic motor sport event.
The 2016 event didn’t disappoint and things went as well as ever in the Capricorn VIP Villa with all in attendance thoroughly enjoying four days of racing and entertainment. Crowds also enjoyed the great selection of music artists that performed including, Rob Thomas, Pete Murray, The Black Sorrows and Icehouse. With all of this excitement and entertainment, it was no surprise record crowd numbers for the event were reached.
Capricorn Members and Preferred Suppliers were treated to a pit tour on Saturday and Sunday thanks to Valvoline and Garry Rogers Motor Sport. Team owner, Garry Rogers with drivers, Scott McLaughlin and James Moffat made themselves available to attend the Capricorn VIP Villa and sign autographs and chat with attendees. As an added bonus, five Capricorn Members were chosen to ride in the Clipsal 500 course car thanks to Clipsal. Thanks also to Greg Hahn from the New Zealand Super Black Team who also arranged a pit tour for members of their pit facility on short notice.
Race 1 saw Jamie Whincup take out the honours with James Courtney and Shane Van Gisbergen taking out the minor places. Race 2 was action packed with James Courtney narrowly beating Jamie Whincup whilst Chaz Mostert took third place. Nick Percat took out the final race of the day whilst Michael Caruso and Garth Tander came in second and third respectively.
It was certainly another action packed weekend for those in attendance and another fantastic Capricorn event. The Clipsal 500 event is fast becoming a highlight on the Capricorn calendar. Be sure to keep an eye out for the Clipsal 500 in 2017!
