ThisMonthin1942IwantedtoshareabitofAmericanHistoryandtheintertwineoftheElkslodgesinAmericaduringWorldWarIIearlyhours.DuringtheinitialbattlesofWorldWarIIduringtheAfricancampaign,theUnitedStateArmyinitiallyfairedverypoorly.Thiswasduetomanycauses,alackofcoordinationofAmericanleadership,poorequipmentandsquabblesatthehighestlevelsbetweentheBritishandtheAmericancommanders.TheinitialtroopsthatfoughtwerefrombothIowaandMinnesotaandtooktheinitialbruntoftheseasonedGermanAfricaCorps.Afterthefirstyearofbattlefrom1942to1943,theU.S.losseswerehuge.ThewardepartmentletoutaleadstoryhowalocalPharmacistfromMontgomeryCounty,IowahadledabattaliontosafetyfromasureGermanSlaughter.Theheadlineread“MooreleadsescapefromNAZILines.”DatelinedtheTunisianFront,thearticlehadrecantedhowtheformerboyCaptain—“red­eyed,haggard,andweekfromlackoffoodandwater”hadledmanyinhisbattaliontosafetyfromahillsurroundedbyGermanssolders.EveryoneinMontgomeryCountyagreedBobMoorewas“averygoodmantohavearound.“However,overthenextfewweeksveryfewsketchydetailsemergedfromaplacecalledKasserine.TheInitialtelegramsthatstartedtofloatintothetownofRedOak,IowaontheeveningofMarch6th;bymidnightthereweremorethantwodozen,nearlyidentical:“TheSecretaryofWardesiresmetoexpresshisregretthatyourSonhasbeenmissinginActioninNorthAfricaSinceFebruary17th.”Manyofthetown’speoplewouldhangoutattheHotelJohnsonnexttotheWesternUnionofficeandfindingrecipientsofthesetelegramswereeasyasinthecaseofMaeStiffle,awidowwhohadraisedeightchildren,workedasahousekeeperatthatveryhotel.ShegottwotelegramswithinfifteenminutesthathertwoSons,SergeantFrankandPrivateDean,weremissing;inthemorning,athirdtelegramaddedherson­in­lawDarrellWolfe,tothelist.ThiswasanongoingprocessthroughouttheCouncilBluffareawhichistheSouthWestareaofthestate.Thebusiestmanintownwasaboy,sixteen­year­oldBillieSmaha,whodeliveredwiresforWesternUnion.BillielatertoldtheSaturdayEveningPost.“IneverworeaWesternUnionhatbecauseIthoughtthatwouldscarethemtoomuchwhenIwentuptothedoor.”The168thInfantryregiment,basedinCouncilBluffs,hadlost109officersand1,797enlistedmen.ANewYorkHeraldTribunereportercalculatedthat“IfNewYorkCityweretosufferlossesinthesameproportion,inasingleaction,itscasualtylistwouldincludemorethan17,000names.”HowdidthesesmalltownscopewithsuchagreatlossofSons,Brothers,andneighbors?ItwasinfacttheElkslodgesthatreachedouttothecommunitieswithbookdrivesandmanyotherprogramstokeepthecommunitiessolderingon.AmericansacrosstheUnitedSateswhohadlostSons,Fathers,BrothersandUnclesthathadleftforfarawayplacesanddiedfoundSolaceandsupportintheircommunity’slodgesandwiththemembershereathome.ThesupportfromtheselodgesintheinitialdarkpartofourearlyhistoryofWorldWarTwowastheglueholdingtogetherfamiliesoftheirrespectivecommunities.InRedOak,population5,600,smallplaqueswentuponthewallintheElkslodge#1304,honoringtheirfallenbrothers,wheretheyremaintoday.
