Welcome to the 2018 Edition of New Dances at JuilliardDuring my first few months as the newly appointed Director of Dance, I have witnessed some of the finest young dancers deep in practice in the studio and in the classroom. Guided by our extraordinary faculty, they strive to refine the technical and presentational aspects of the art form, day by day. This type of rigor fortifies the dancer as an artist, capable of expressing an infinite possibility of emotions and ideas.

What you are about to see are the fruits of their labor, synthesized with the creative genius of four New Dances choreographers who have been tasked with creating an original work for one full class of the Dance Division. Over the past two months, the choreographers and dancers have engaged in a process that celebrates the ideals of art making and creative enterprise through collaboration, ingenuity, risk-taking, and generosity.

My gratitude goes to Marcus Jarrell Willis, Nelly van Bommel, Peter Chu, Stefanie Batten Bland, and the entire production team for pouring so much of themselves into this endeavor. I truly believe that together, we create something greater than the sum of our individual parts, renewing the spirit of community in a very tangible way.

Thank you for joining us on this journey. Enjoy!

“YOU, sit down! Watch your tone and play well with others!”

How does your reaction influence the space around you?Quality of sound is vital for communication and human recognition. Your character is expressed by the subtext of your tone.

Playing with curiosity, repeated patterns move through the hidden truths of change, slip into a playground of compassion, and vacillate between waving emotions. Smeared, supple, and smooth grooves in the body extend from an internal rhythm that awakens the essence of why we move. Rhythms connect humans and help us grow. A communal experience without social barriers is celebrated when moving and working together––its profound effect on others can heal during divisive times.

Thank you to third-year class, musicians, designers, and Taylor LaBruzzo for floating through water and playing with curiosity.

About Juilliard Dance

Now under the direction of Alicia Graf Mack, Juilliard Dance aims to create true contemporary dancers—trained equally in classical ballet and modern dance. Established in 1951 by William Schuman during his tenure as president of The Juilliard School, with the guidance of founding division director Martha Hill, Juilliard became the first major teaching institution to combine equal instruction in both contemporary and ballet techniques.

Each year 24 dancers are accepted into the four-year BFA program. In addition to daily ballet and modern technique classes, every dancer participates in classical and contemporary partnering, dance composition, anatomy, acting, dance history, stagecraft, production, music theory, repertory, and elements of performing. Dancers are encouraged to present their own choreographed works in informal concerts and workshop presentations. Every fall each class has the opportunity to work with established choreographers in premiere dances as part of the New Dances performances. Recent commissions include works by Bryan Arias, Roy Assaf, Gentian Doda, John Heginbotham, Matthew Neenan, Gustavo Ramírez Sansano, Katarzyna Skarpetowska, and Pam Tanowitz. Spring performances give dancers the opportunity to perform in established works from repertory. Recent repertory performances included works by Nacho Duato, William Forsythe, Martha Graham, Jirí Kylián, José Limón, Mark Morris, Crystal Pite, Paul Taylor, and Twyla Tharp.

Juilliard Dance alumni include the choreographers and directors Robert Battle, Pina Bausch, Jessica Lang, Lar Lubovitch, Andrea Miller, Ohad Naharin, and Paul Taylor. Juilliard dancers are currently dancing in Nederlands Dans Theater, Nederlands Dans Theater 2, Ballet BC, Aspen/Santa Fe Ballet, BJM_Danse, L.A. Dance Project, Limón Dance Company, GöteborgsOperans Danskompani, Ballett des Saarländisches Staatstheater, Kidd Pivot, and Batsheva Dance Company, among many others, as well as in several Broadway productions.

The Juilliard Dance Division is the proud recipient of the 2015 Capezio Award and was the first educational institution to receive the honor.

Juilliard Jazz

Wynton Marsalis, Director Aaron Flagg, Chair and Associate Director Anika Adilifu, Administrative Manager and Production AssociateCarlvin Sanon, Jazz Production and Library Manager

Now in its 17th season, Juilliard Jazz offers bachelor’s and master’s degrees and the Artist Diploma. The curriculum combines classroom, private studio, and performance ensemble courses with substantial interactions with jazz masters and multiple performance opportunities in diverse venues around the city and the world. The repertoire studied covers the entire jazz continuum, highlights its American vernacular roots, and emphasizes the social and cultural vitality of the music. During the 2018-19 season, the Juilliard Jazz Orchestra performs six concerts, Juilliard Jazz Ensembles give nine performances, and the Artist Diploma Ensemble performs twice. Several of this season’s concerts will feature guest vocalists in anticipation of the launch of the new voice master’s degree program to begin in the fall of 2019. Jazz artists Carla Cook, Kurt Elling, Hilary Gardner, Lenora Helm, Carmen Lundy, Dianne Reeves, and Charenée Wade are on the advisory committee, and these artists will be involved in the jazz voice master’s degree program through master classes, guest coachings, or other roles.

In New York City, the 44 students in Juilliard Jazz present more than 50 performances annually on and off campus in diverse venues including Alice Tully Hall, Blue Note, Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola, and Juilliard’s Paul Hall and Peter Jay Sharp Theater. Juilliard Jazz students also enjoy extraordinary opportunities to share their performing and teaching artistry around the United States and the world. They have recently performed with the Albany and Princeton symphonies; at festivals in Amsterdam, Australia, Bolivia, Brazil, Cape Cod, and the Cayman Islands; and in clubs in China, Italy, Japan, Mexico, and Switzerland. In addition to weekly coachings with the faculty, small ensembles work with guest coaches such as Carla Cook, Chris Crenshaw, Dave Douglas, Marion Felder, Victor Goines, Brandon Lee, José Madera, and Dr. Michael White.

Go behind the scenes of Juilliard’s Spring Dances with this course taught by Henning Rübsam. This year’s program pairs masterworks by Martha Graham (The Rite of Spring) and Bill T. Jones (D-Man in the Waters) with the wit and theatricality of Alejandro Cerrudo’s Little mortal jump.

Juilliard student dancers will visit the class to share insights about the process of learning and performing these dances. You will also receive exclusive access to a Spring Dances rehearsal, as well as tickets to the March 27 opening-night performance.
