Technical and Professional Construction and Civil Engineering This involves the study of construction materials, methods, procedures and site organisation.

From Architecture, Construction and Civil Engineering, technical and professional includes knowledge to setting out of bridges, houses, complex structures, infrastructure works. Health and Safety is an important part of the industry and is a fundamental part of the course and you can find work in this area of the industry. Other aspects of the industry are to manage and control a construction project. Estimating and quantity surveying are the key parts to the feasibility study prior to projects starting and whilst in process to monitor cost

The College has Affiliate Status with the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) and the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE)

Project Management Surveying

What are the essential skills needed to study construction and civil engineering?The study of construction requires a good understanding of science and maths as most of the subjects studied are based on these. Good self-organisation, motivation and attention to detail and a good aptitude to construction and civil engineering. This course is the theory related to construction and civil engineering for technicians and engineering. The course includes Technical & CAD drawing, land surveying and building surveying which are important parts to general construction and civil engineering and for architecture.

Full-time courses in ConstructionTechnical and Professional in Construction and Civil Engineering offers the following full-time courses:

BTEC Extended Diploma in Construction (15 Units)Entry requirements: 4 GCSEs grade 5 including Maths, English and ScienceLevel 3Course length 2 yearsEquivalent to: 3 A-levelsAdditional studies: Employability Skills, Work placement

BTEC Foundation Diploma in Construction (7 Units)Entry requirements: 4 GCSEs grade 5 including Maths, English and ScienceLevel 3Course length 1 yearEquivalent to: 1.5 A-levelsAdditional studies: Employability Skills, Work placement

Students studying for a BTEC Extended Diploma will also have an opportunity to complete a BTEC Foundation Diploma as a one-year course if there is a change of circumstances during the first year or wish to finish study early. These students will have the opportunity to return to study Extended Diploma in the second year if they change their mind or employed and wish to complete a Higher Level 3 course.

T – Level Construction Surveying, Design and PlanningEntry requirements: 4 GCSEs including Maths, English and ScienceLevel 3Course length 2 yearEquivalent to: 1.5 A-levelsAdditional studies: Employability Skills, Work placement

T Levels are new two-year, Level 3 study programmes that will follow the study of GCSEs and Technical Awards at Key Stage 4 and offer an attractive alternative to A Levels and Apprenticeships. T Levels will combine classroom theory, practical learning and a minimum 315 hours of industry placement with an employer to make sure students have real experience of the workplace.

Functional Skills and Additional unitsAll students who have sat and passed their GCSE Maths and English grade 4 or above will not need to attend sessions in Functional Skills. Tutorial and Enrichment events will take place in college and site visits are also included in the course. Work placement will also be arranged along with an employability programme and UCAS sessions to ensure the students future is cared for.

Possible outcomes of studying BTEC NationalsThe BTEC National programme has been designed to be as flexible as possible and allows for several options.

Option Qualification gained Recommended for

Learners complete one years of study

BTEC Foundation Diploma in Construction (equivalent to 1.5 A-levels)

Max UCAS points 84 (D*)

Students wishing to obtain a Foundation Diploma to move onto employment, return to complete the Extended Diploma or part time study

Learners complete two years of study AND complete all additional units

BTEC Extended Diploma in Construction (equivalent to 3 A-levels)

Max UCAS points 168 (D*D*D*)

Those who wish to go on and gain employment and possibly continue with part time study or start on a Degree course.

All learners will be encouraged to start on the Foundation Diploma then the 1-year Extended Diploma top up because it always better to have more qualifications and gain high UCAS points for University or entering Higher Education.

Possible Outcomes of studying T Levels Students undertaking this Technical Qualification will be 16–19 years old and in full-time education. They will have chosen a T Level as an alternative to A Levels, Applied Generals or an Apprenticeship.

The typical student will likely have: A clear idea as to the industry sector they wish to pursue as a career. An idea of the type of job role they’d like to explore as a career. Taken an active choice not to pursue an Apprenticeship (either due to lack of

availability or the wish to remain in full-time education).

This Technical Qualification is intended for students who want to progress to a career in the construction sector, with a focus on Surveying and Design, and Civil Engineering. Job roles could include:

Surveying Technician Civil Engineering Design Technician Digital Engineering Technician Civil Engineering Technician Architectural Technician Construction Design Coordinator Transport Planning Technician Rail Engineering Design Technician.

The jobs available to students will be based on their individual abilities in the construction sector and will be supported by their achievement of this qualification. Alternatively, students could progress sideways to Level 3 Construction Apprenticeships to develop and gain certification of their occupational competence, or they could progress to higher level Apprenticeships such as:

Level 4: Construction Site Engineering Technician, Construction Quantity Surveying Technician, Construction Design and Build Technician, Construction Site Supervisor, Acoustics Technician.

Level 6: Building Control Surveyor, Site Management, Chartered Surveyor, Civil Engineer, Civil Engineering Site Management, Construction Quantity Surveyor, Construction Site Manager, Design and Construction Management, Architectural Assistant.

Where students do not have access to an Apprenticeship or would prefer a more academic route, they could progress to relevant Higher National Certificate (HNC) or Higher National Diploma (HND) programmes or construction degree programmes such as Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Construction Surveying, Building Services Engineering, Construction Design and Architecture. Students should always check the entry requirements for each degree programme with the relevant higher education provider. (Max UCAS points 168)

What we do following GCSE resultsDuring the summer, we send out packs to everyone who has applied for full-time study at New College Durham. These packs include:

Welcome day details Start dates for the courses A form to report the student’s grades to the College

The College will hold an advice day when GCSE results are given, and the day after. Should your son or daughter not get the grades they had been expecting, college staff will be available on these days to give advice on alternative studies.

Induction arrangementsAll full-time students are asked to attend a Welcome Day before the start of the course. The aim of this is to allow the students to meet their tutors and the rest of the class and hopefully, make a few new friends. The activities they take part in are all designed to allow them to learn more about construction using videos and presentations.

Once the course starts, all students take part in a more formal induction process that explains to them their role within the College and how the College can prepare and help them to achieve their goals.

As part of the induction process, all learners are asked to sign the Student Agreement. This sets out what learners can expect from us, and what we expect from them.

What it’s like to be a student at New College Durham

Timetable

Student enrolled for the BTEC Nationals Study for approximately 16.5 hours a week for 3 Terms, and possibly 2 semesters for their main qualification and another 1.5 hours for Tutorials, 1-hour employability and 1 hour work ready skills (work placement). This means a Foundation Diploma or Extended Diploma student will be in class for about 16 hours per week spread over two or three days. The normal daily timetable is between 9:00 to 5:00, but there will probably be some early finishes, such as half days, and possibly late starts, such as mid-morning.

Students enrolled for the T LevelStudy for 4 days over 3 Terms including 1.5 hours for Tutorials, 1-hour employability and work ready skills

Coursework (Internally assessed)Assignments are practical tasks set in work-related scenarios that can be tailored to local industry needs for your learners. Learners demonstrate how they apply knowledge and skills to complete a practical project over a period of time, working individual or in groups.

Tasks (Externally assessed)Tasks are practical work-related scenarios completed in realistic, time-based situations.They are completed in controlled conditions and some tasks have pre-released information.

Exams (Externally assessed)For written exams, learners draw on information to create written answers to practical questions in exam conditions. Exams are set externally by Pearson which will require exam condition supervised assessments. These ensure that the students’ work is their own.

Equipment neededAll we ask is that students have a pen, pencil, ruler, scientific calculator, and a file to put their notes in. Access to word processing software, internet for online research. You may be asked to buy P.P.E for site visits and employability placements.

Tutorial programmeAll students at New College Durham follow a full tutorial programme on Student Advantage software and use an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) that is designed to help them achieve their qualification and progression aims. Tutorial also includes enrolment onto the NCS course which will be compulsory attendance.

What happens at the end of the course?

BTEC Nationals progression

Most who complete the Foundation Diploma will return for the Extended Diploma for a further year of study. Around one third of successful completers from the Extended Diploma further their studies at university/college with the remainder gaining some other form of employment, apprenticeships or training.

T Level Progression

Where students do not have access to an Apprenticeship or would prefer a more academic route, they could progress to relevant Higher National Certificate (HNC) or Higher National Diploma (HND) programmes or construction degree programmes such as Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Construction Surveying, Construction Design and Architecture.

Students should always check the entry requirements for each degree programme with the relevant higher education provider.

Higher National Certificate / Higher National Diploma

These courses offer accelerated entry to university degree courses and are currently available as part time study with employment in construction or civil engineering at a full cost to the student.
