CHAPMAN CHATTER

-Gil Alford Corresponding

Secretary

--------- If you [are an member with computer on-line capabilities and] are not posting queries bye-mail I suggest you consider it. I'm involved with the publication of three different family publications -- edit one myself and assist editors in the other two. We have found that it is much better to get input via e-mail as it can be loaded directly into the publication without a lot of keying and proofreading. (Errors in electronic queries are the responsibility of the submitter).

If you decide to try placing your genealogical queries via e-mail, here is a good standard for submittal:

Save text from your word processor in ASCII format with the hard returns stripped out. When loaded into the mail manager of their on-line service (works in Compuserve anyway) the text flows in and wraps perfectly -- coming out that way on the other end. (This saves you or someone else a lot of reformatting time.)

Gil Alford, Jr. 1403 Kingsford Drive

Florissant, MO 63031-2422 (314) 831-8648

Project Assignment---------Data Entry volunteers are needed to assist non-computerized members. It is preferable that volunteer(s) have a working knowledge of Brother's Keeper, but not required -- as any software capable of producing GEDCOM mes is acceptable. Volunteer(s) would be in charge of entering family history data onto disk for members that do not have access to a computer. Once the data has been successfully keyed into a computer software program, then a GEDCOM me can be generated and mailed onto Corresponding Secretary, Gil Alford for merging into the main CHAPMAN database.

To volunteer, contact Amelia Painter: PO Box 154, San Luis Rey, CA 92068 (E-mail: [email protected]) or Gil K. Alford, Jr. 1403 Kingsford Drive, Florissant, MO 63031-2422, (314) 831-8648. (E-mail:[email protected])

Red Herring Tales by Jean Chapman Snow

We are all sleuths seeking clues in our genealogical mystery tales. Back in the dark ages (before computers), sister Eleanor and I began our search with three family Bibles and an article about Jabez Chapman cut from the 1895 Cooperstown Freeman's Joumal. And red herrings.

Our Bibles didn't state whether Jabez or his father Zenas was our great-great-grandfather. Census records proved Zenas had married twice. Jabez was half-brother to our real great-great, Daniel. One herring tossed into the garbage.

Wrapped in the newspaper article were several other red herrings. Ninety-nine year old Jabez said he was born in Lancaster, CT. There is no Lancaster,------', CT!

Did Jabez mispeak? Did the reporter confuse. the towns? Our Bible gives only his birthdate. This herring still awaits disposal.

Jabez remembers moving to Cooperstown in 1799 with his father, mother, infant sister, and grandfather Ezekiel. But what town did they leave from?

Ezekiel's travels are shown by the birthplaces of his children. From Lebanon CT, birthplace of his first three children, to Springfield MA, probably to work in the Springfield Armory, one child. Then after the Revolution to nearby Westfield and three more children. The last child was born in Angile, NY.

Red herring alert! Where is Angile, NY? We queried Yankee Magazine's genealogical

column. Answers suggested we'd misread the writing and/or the name was misspelled. There's an Argyle organized 1778, not far from Fort Edward. Perhaps Ezekiel learned of it during his war service.

But where was Zenas all this time? He married in Chatham, CT. Another herring awaiting disposal.

Brooklyn, NY was a red herring that stumped us for years. Dad's mother was an only child we thought, but cemetery records unearthed two sisters who had died before our grandmother was born. One was ~~

born (as was grandmother) in Middlefield, but the first sister in Brooklyn!

Brooklyn? The former Dodgers' "dese, dem and dose" Brooklyn? It did not compute.

Lasl year in a magazine I found a note from an astrologer. She said her computcr program had pulled up the wrong latitude and longitude for that linl famous Brooklyn (she'd lived there and recognized thc mistake).

'There are three Brooklyns in New York State," she wrote. Aha!

She sent me the other coordinatcs. One was too far west, one too far south, but the third was just right. In the ball park. (Ouch! Couldn't resist.)

I still couldn't find it on a map though, until a librarian directed me to the Omni Gazetteer*. There at last I found the Brooklyn I wantcd, on the Delaware County side of the Susquchanna, a few miles from Middlefield.

I certainly hope a library near you owns this invaluable set. You might dispose of your red herrings.

Order frpm Heritage Books, Inc., 1540-E Pointer Ridge Pl., Suite 300, Bowie, MD 20716 (book reference code is #L058). Heritage accepts Visa/MasterCard/Checks and Money Orders.

There are actually two books in this series. The first of them covered the years 1850-1874 and was first printed in 1994. (Contains 415 pages, sells for $32.00 plus $4.00 shipping, catalog #L060, ISBN 07884-0034-7.)

Both of the Seminole Illdians of Florida issues are filled with data transcribed from the records of the Department of the Interior, Bureau of Indian Affairs Records, which are part of the holdings of the National Archives in Washington, D.C. The annuity and per capita rolls were taken by the federal government to determine the eligibility of persons of

Indian descent to rcceive payment of monies as the result of U.S. Congressional Legislation and Trcaties signed betwecn the Indian tribes and the U.S. government.

In each Annuity Roll accounting, the author has transcribed the original documents "word for word", but helps the reader byacknowlcdging discrepancics and errors found during the transcription process in the Forcword. The various Annuity Rolls contain name of head of household, total in household, amount of annuity, current roll number and the names of any others living in the household. All records are organized according to the different Indian bands, which is a great help to the novicc Indian record researcher.

Lists and Returns of Connecticut Men in the Revolution, 1775·1783

'The major part of this volume, as its title might indicate, is composed of officially written lists and returns of soldiers who were serving in the Continental regiments of the 'Connecticut Line.' There are also some rolls of companies in service which had not previously been printed, particularly in 1782 and 1783...its chief value will be found to consist in the addition in the case of a great majority of the soldiers, of the name of the town from which the soldier came. This will supply much sought for information, and in many cases will doubtless serve to identify the soldier."

Information often includes: name, town of residence, date of enlistment or detachment, company, regiment, and duration of servicc. The records are arranged chronologically. Originally published in 1909 by the Connecticut Historical Society, reprint Heritage Books, Inc. 1995. 489pp., index. papcr, $31.00, #563. Heritage accepts Visa/MasterCard/Checks/Money Orders. Please add $3.50 to the price for shipping and handling.

This looks like a very good resource for anyone researching ancestors in the area. They accept queries, but you'll need to write to inquire about charges...none are stated.

VA Baptisms: Until 1786, all children born in Virginia, regardless of religious affiliation, were required to be baptized in the Episcopal Church, which was the "state church." Parish registers give tlie names, date of birth, and parents information. These are all kept in the Virginia State Library in Richmond, and other places. (-Foothills Gen. Soc. of CO., No.56)

!della Martha died February 14, 1937 in Bryan, Brazos County, Texas. According to her death certificate her maiden name was CHATMAN and she was born in Mississippi- censuses show different birth places- 1900 says Tennessee and 1910 says Alabama. Family tradition says that ldella was orphaned at an early age and that she had three brothers- John, Richard and Tomp. Notwithstanding the "CHATMAN" on the death certificate the family knows it is "CHAPMAN:

[CFA Note: With the death certificate and at least two censuses maybe Charles could supply us the approximate date of Idella's birth. She must have been living in 1880. If she was age 10 or under then she should be listed in the soundex records of the 1880 census. Since there is some question as to place of birth and since Tennessee, Mississippi and Alabama do all touch at one point it would be wise to check all three states- perhaps the 1920 census soundex record would provide further

Christine L. (Chapman) HILL #100 Q#6.094 116 Faull Avenue Ukiah, CA 95482 (707) 462-4049 and her brother

Phillip E. CHAPMAN #122 636 S.E. 49th Avenue Portland, OR 97215

>From Christine: •... I have only completed a small amount of research on my father's patemal side and enclose a copy of this information from my genealogy program. Most of my research thus far has been on my father's matemal side where we traced back through the American Revolution and into Scotland."

Christine is the daughter of Edwin Everett CHAPMAN b. September 28, 1914 in Tampa, Florida. Edwin was the son of Ira Martin CHAPMAN who married Grace Cleona ESTRIDGE February 21, 1913 in Lakeland, Florida. Ira was the son of an Archibald CHAPMAN.

> From Phillip, speaking of his father, Edwin Everett (Eugene) CHAPMAN wrote: "His father was Ira Martin CHAPMAN and am unsure where he was born, although I believe it may have been in Lawrence COUDty, Ohio around 1880-85. Supposedly he served on the U.S.S. Kearsarge in the Spanish American War c 1898. Anecdotal history reveals he was killed in a saloon fight in Detroit, Michigan, sometime in the late 1920s or early 1930's.... I was told that Ira Martin's father (my father's grandfather) came to Americm.from England (possibly Scotland) and was a Baptist preacher."

It appears that much could be learned about these families by reviewing the soundex records of the Ohio, Michigan and/or Florida censuses of 1880, 1900, 1910 and 1920. If anyone has access to that information Christine and Phillip would like to hear from them. -Gil Alford

I was referred to the Chapman Family Organization by Pat Thomas off of the Internet. I am interested in finding some information on the Chapman Family.

My Grandfather on my Dad's side had an aunt named Minnie SMITH. She was his mom's sister. She was b. July 15, 1882 in Lucasville, OH, d, 25 Apr 1966, probably in Cincinnati area. She m, Charles Spencer CHAPMAN, b. 25 Nov 1880 in Portsmouth, OH, d. 23 Aug 1973, in Louisa, KY. They m. June 24, 1899. They had 14 children, and I believe 11 lived. They were JohnRobert CHAPMAN (Oct 29, 1900-Sept 18, 1975), Herbert Charles CHAPMAN (1902-Unknown), Bessie 'CHAPMAN (b. 8 Sep 1904, I believe 4 Aug 1987 in Cincinnati. She married a REED.), Leslie Harold CHAPMAN (26 Apr 1907 - still living, m. Margaret? and had two sons, Richard & Alan), Russell William CHAPMAN (1909- Apr 20, 1977), Albert Ray & Alberta May

(twins born June 1, 1911 in Cmcinnati), Dorothy Evangeline (Nov 26, 1913-1994), Beatrice Mane (Sept 16, 1915 - probably still living), Forest Stanley (Jan 6, 1917- probably still living), Chester Gayland (Dec 10, 1918-unknown), Rosemary CHAPMAN (born and died March 21, 1921), and twins Paul and Pauline Chapman born and died June 16, 1924.

Charles Spencer Chapman had siblings. Nella Lavina Chapman (Jan 25, 1869-in Portsmouth, OH, d. 18 Apr 1934. I have been told she married a SLYE from Portsmouth, possibly James SLYE. I have been told that James was related to Leonard Franklin SLYE (a.k.a. Roy Rogers), also from Portsmouth. I don't think James could have been Leonard's uncle, but I believe he was a brother to Alonzo SLYE, Leonard's grandfather, also from Portsmouth. My grandfather tells me that as a boy, he remembers his Uncle Charlie CHAPMAN running around with Andrew (Andy) ·SLYE, Roy Rogers dad.

~ Since Roy Rogers was "\ born in 1912, and

Andy SLYE in 1883, Nella would have been a contemporary of Alonzo, (Roy's Grandfather). Nella had a sister, Ida Cordelia CHAPMAN, who m. James COOPER. She also had another brother, Edward CHAPMAN

(born and died on Mar 8, 1883). Charles's parents were Robert SPENCER CHAPMAN (Mar 15,1838-June 22, 1921) and Caroline Elizabeth DUNCAN (Mar 20, 1848- Mar 8, 1883 probably in the childbirth of Edward).

My big question is to substantiate the link between SLYE and CHAPMAN. If I am not correct in my link, I would like to fmd it. Also any other information on these individuals or their ancestors (or descendants) would be appreciated. I would be glad to share any more of my related research. I have Roy ROGERS family tree done to a point. He has 33 great grandchildren and I don't know all of them. I met him. this year and he was very nice, but with 33 great grandchildren, he couldn't remember any CHAPMAN'S from long ago in Portsmouth. Thank you for your help. Note: My source is my Grandfather, Chester Earl SMITH, who is still living in Sebastian, FL.

I have nothing here that would substantiate the idea that there is any link between the CHAPMANS and the SLYE family. The best course of action is for the editor of our Chapman association Newsletter to publish an inquiry or some other piece of information

Maybe [someone can help me] trace Lafayette CHAPMAN who m. the widow of my great-grandfather, Alfred ROGERS, son of Bethea.

The ROGERS family lived in E. Feliciana Parish since 1808. The 1880 census of E.F. Parish lists Demie K. and Wm. Howard ROGERS (known sons of Alfred and brothers of my grandfather, Charles Bunyan ROGERS) as step-sons of Lafayette CHAPMAN, age 25. Margaret, age 37, is shown as Lafayette's wife. I know that her maiden name was JONES. I presume that Alfred ROGERS must have died before 1880 and I have not been able to verify exact year of death. The 1880 census shows a son, Edmme A., 1/'lA May. Can you tell me what you know about Lafayette - his parents or relatives and whether he had any other children by Margaret? I have not done any hard core research on this marriage. Your response will be appreciated. Lafayette bom ca 1855 per above. (17zey many young in Louisiana!!) From GRS jiles, "Louisiana Marriage Records, 1739-1910" on CD-ROM I found: Alfred ROGERS m. Margaret S. JONES in St. Helena Parish, LA, 11 Feb 1861. Other marriages in that time frame are: Ann ROGERS m. Albert ROGERS on 12 Dec 1871,Aron ROGERS m. Ellen JOHNSON on 07 Dec 1871; Edith ROGERS m. Joseph J. BLACKWELL on 15 Oct 1874; Louiza ROGERS m. I am researching my family tree, primarily the Milam name, but I also have a CHAPMAN connection through my great grandmother Julia CHAPMAN b. in July, 1863, in Auraria, Lumpkin County, GA. I advertised through an Inquiry and was very pleased to fmd out about the Chapman Family Association. I was tod. YQU folks are very helpful, and that you keep a huge data base on the Chapmans. I have found the Chapman connection living in Auraria, beginning in the 1850 US Census, but have not been able to go any further. Could you help? I would also like to learn more about the Family Association, with the thought of joining it. Thank you so much!

Jack enclosed 2 family group sheets. George CHAPMAN, b. 1810, & wife Harlet, b. 1818, and their six children. Fields Chapman, b. 1838, & wife Margaret, b. 1843, and their 10 children. Both are from the GA census which we all have. I am mailing the group sheets to Gil. Does anyone have any additional infonnation for him? -Bob Sonfield

We don't have much to go on with ZACHARIAH. They were in Cleremont County, OH, his wife's parents died in 1776 in WV when Mary was 4. That tells us Mary, Zach's wife was born about 1m in W VA. No data on when and where Zach might have been born. I have data on several "Zechariah" CHAPMANS in the general period and area. I assume that Zechariah and Zachariah can be considered the same. Of those I found I think I can rule out all but one. I cannot make him the fellow we want nor, can I rule him out. This data comes from Rev. F. W. CHAPMAN'S 1854 book on the Chapman family. Zechariah CHAPMAN, son of Caleb CHAPMAN and his first wife Elizabeth CLARK had a son named Zechariah b. 29'Feb 1761. The source does not identify his wife but his children were Reuben, Caleb, William, Laura, and Alonzo. It shows that Zechariah lived in Stephentown, N.Y. but does not say when, nor does it say where the children were born.

I did fmd Zachariah Chapman in Clermont County, OH, thanks to Joan's census work, but the fellow in 1840 does not seem to fit our description. If the census data was correct he would have been born 1780 at the earliest and the same is true for the wife. They had a son about 17 and a

daughter about 25. That's all that was in the family. Clermont County, OH was a pretty popular spot for CHAPMANS - weren't most places - and I don't thin~

we can determine any specif1c migration pattern or· , place of origin for them. It would help if we knew where they were married. If in OH, then Zach could have come over from New England and New York. If in W VA then it is probable that his family was one from the Mid-Atlantic states. I find no trace of such a person in the VA-WV data that is processed to the computer.

George CHAPMAN of GA did not provide us much more information. I have two persons listed in the data base, apparently from marriage listings or the LDS-IGI (didn't really check the source) who I think are the same person. One shows George CHAPMAN m. Harriet CHAPMAN in Lumpkin Co. 31 Jan 1835. The other shows George m. Harris CHAPMAN 5 Feb 183 . While it was not uncommon, I always wonder about the reported marriages between persons of same surname -- I just wonder if the person recording or reporting got the surname right- that's all. The 1840 census index does show George in·Lumpkin Co. He would not have been enumerated there in 1830 because Lumpkin was not created until 1832- however, I find no George CHAPMANS listed in any of the 1830 GA census. It is probable that he was enumerated as part of his father's family in 1830 since he would have been only/'-----'\ 20.

Jack, please send us whatever you have on Chapman and we will try to connect you. Sometimes some seemingly insignificant piece of information several generations removed from the subject will lead us to a path that will take us to the answers you need. If either of you are on-line please advise us of your address. -=Gil Alford, CFA Con-esponding Secretary and temporary custodian of the data bank.

BJ. has three Chapman lines but some of them are fairly well known. His greatest need is probably with John CHAPMAN and his wife Martha and their daughter Elizabeth CHAPMAN who m. John JUDSON 12 Mar 1673 in Litchfield Co, Connecticut.

Most of wha! we kllOw about these folks which is just what you read - came about tell years ago from Geneva D. Mitchell, 188 Temple Avenue, Long Beac!l, C4 90803. She was a descelldant ofJoll/l JJUDSON and Elizabeth CHAPMAN'S daughter, Manha JUDSON, who m. William PRESTON ill June 1705.

One of the bits alld pieces that Molly Lou Stoddard, CFA :#011, has sent to Gil Alford over the years contained (J brief mention of these Chapmans. That is ironic in that the descendants of these Chapmans of Geneva's, and. B. J. 's, conllects with the STODDARD branch with a marriage betweell Lymall STODDARD and Ruth WRIGHT (a CHAPMAN descendallt) several gelleratiolls later.

One of the better kllown branches of BJ. 's Chapmalls were identified as Obadiah CHAPMAN whose daughter Elizabeth CHAPMAN married Eua HUTCHINSON. 17lese folks belong to what we commonly call the brallch of William CHAPMAN bom abt 1633 in England. He's the fellow who first appeared in New London County, Connecticut. A genealogy of that branch was first published by Rev. F. J.v. Chapmall ill 1854 as olle of the supplements to his massive Roben Chapmall Family. His account, for this branch, listed only William, John, Obadiah, and some of Obadiah's childrell - excluding Elizabeth. With bits and pieces fr6m all over Gil Alford and John M. Chapmall of Quincy, IL have updated that gellealogy several times. John did the latest alld with the help of a pedigree foml from Beth R. Smith, POBox 4001, East Lansing, MI 48826, was able to extelld tlzis branch by sevell gelleratiolls and on dowlI to herself. Her ancestor in all this was Mattlzias CHAPMAN, son of Obadiah and that was where Rev. F. J.v. Chapman stopped. Going back from Obadiah we find John CHAPMAN b. 1653 who 171. Sarah, and John was the son of William, the supposed immigrallt.

171e third, and best knowlI brallch, is that documented by Rev. F. J.v. Chapmall in his 1854 "17le Chapman Family." B. J.'s brallch here is (1) Roben and AIIII BLISS, (2) John CHAPMAN alld Elizabeth BEMAN (3) Jabez CHAPMAN alld Ester SELDEN, and (4) Sarah CHAPMAN and Edward SPENCER.

For the past twelve years I have been trying to track down all the dese. of John Blakeley, a British soldier in the R~volutionary War. Last summer I started entering the project on the computer, but still a long way to go; twelve years is a big pile of paper.

Looking for further info on one JOHN BLAKELEY born Jun 29 1782 in Deerfield, Franklin County, MA; d. there Dec 18 1855. His first wife, Sally SWEET whom he m. on Aug 15 1805 was the daugther of Joseph SWEET and Susanna CHAPMAN. Sally died in 1807 and he m., after Apr 22 1810 in Deerfield, Clarissa CHAPMAN, daughter of Jonathan CHAPMAN and Anna SWEET.

Clarissa was b. Jul 25 1784 and d. Jun 14 1840. He took, as his third wife, H uldah PECK, who was the daughter of Simeon PECK and Lucinda CHAPMAN. Hulda was b. abt 1795 and d. Dec 12 1854 in Deerfield.

Most of the Chapman info I have came from the "Deerfield Vital Records to 1850" and George Sheldon's "History of Deerfield." The only Chapman: in my project are ones that married Blakeley/Blakely descendants and those Chapman's parents. I'm not descended from John Jr., so I haven't done any research on Chapmans as ancestors.

Mrs. Beth WALTERSCHEIDT, 1202 Guadalupe College Station, TX 77846 is a descendant of John Blakeley Jr. through his son Carlos. She may have more Chapman info.

Anna SWEET, the mother of Clarissa CHAPMAN was the sister of Joseph SWEET, the father of Sally SWEET.

Huldah,PECK, John Jr.'s 3rd wife was the widow of Samuel LANFAIR (m. Sam'~ 1817), her mother was Lucinda CHAPMAN (Sheldon says, prob. dau of Soloman). Lucinda d. 29 Oct 1842, Age 76.

The West Deerfield crowd can get confusing; they were marrying cousins around in circles. Very few family names in the West Deerfield cemetery.

"Hist. of Drfld" says the CHAPMANS came from New London & Groton, CT and the SWEETS came from Colchester, CT.

You listed four other CHAPMAN-CASTAIN unions but we can find a record of only one of them. 1 would not expect us to have one an the 1962 marriage unless those involved were one of our contaclS and they apparently are not.

We did have a record of Louisa CHAPMAN who m. John CHASTAiN. We had her birth date and usband's name but we did not know where she was born or where they married. Our record just showed a presence in Missouri. I have a letter aboLlt ten years old fonn a contact who supplied infonnation on their family. J would prefer to send it via USPS rather than reduce it to electronic media- if you would please provide us you regular mailing address.

We have a Nancy J. CHASTEEN who m. a Charles Wesley CHAPMAN. He was born 1839 in Indiana, son of John and Mary Reeves CHAPMAN. There is nothing more on her.

If you send your address and If you would like for us to register you in the computer as one interested in all CHASTAIN-CHAPMAN connections we will be happy to do so. If others should tum up and if we are lucky we'll "stumble" over your interest and let you know.

How about it?? Do you have all

MARSHALL in Modesto, CA. They had three children: Griffith Owen, David Marshall, and Katheryn Marshall LA\VLER.

My grandfather, John William CHAPMAN was m. to Katheryn ORR, the daughter of Sample ORR from Mo. Sample ORR ran for governor of MO in 1862 unsuccessfully. There is a wonderful article about his· race for the governorship, at the time of the Civil War, in the MO Historical Society J oumal in 1948. After Sample Orr was defeated he took a steam boat and brought his family to the Montana Territory where he served in the Territorial Legislature in Montana. My grandfather, John W. CHAPMAN had originally come to Idaho in 1864. He went back to MO to marry my grandmother Katheryn Orr Chapman and then took her with her family to Montana. They all moved back to Idaho in the 1870s to Blackfoot, Idaho.

I hope this may help regarding my Chapmans My father was Marshall B)'Ton CHAPMAN and my mother was Dorothy PARSONS. My father Marshall B. CHAPMAN had a brother William Orr CHAPMAN, and a sister Olivia Chapman MARSHALL.

Fred is one of many members that responded on the recent questionnaire that he would like to help us with CHAPMAN research. So, for Fred and all others willing to assist us -- here are a few areas where we could use help:

Census extraction. As some of you know several Chappies have helped collect census data over the years but we have a long way to go. One of the main on-going projects is to complete the extraction of all Chapmans from all censuses up to the present time and then every ten years extract the new one that comes out.

It would be nice to fmd a member willing to act as Senior Associate for Census Collection Committee. This member would work with Gil Alford to layout plans for a fJIteen year census collection program, then other volunteer members could be given assignments based on the fifteen year collection plan.

Until this Senior Associate is identified, Gil Alford will continue to coordinate our census extraction efforts. If you'd like to help, contact Gil.

Master Book Listing. We are asking every member to constantly keep their eyes open, and when possible to scour libraries from wall to wall fmding any mention of "CHAPMAN" in a book.

Once a mention is found, photocopy the title page insuring you get the title, author and year of publication/copyright when available (many so called genealogical publications have no date). Also copy the index pages that list CHAPMAN and all of the pages where CHAPMAN is mentioned. Looking out for the pages before and after as the area of interest may span over onto adjoining pages.

Gil Alford has a very good way of recording, ruing and referencing this data. We would like a member to volunteer to learn this system and record it in a computer rue - something like an expanded bibliography.

Everyone who has access to a library can help with this project.

For more details, or to volunteer for any of the above positions, contact anyone of the following Directors via e-mail: Amelia Painter < [email protected]> Gilbert K. Alford < [email protected] > M.D.C. MORGAN <[email protected]>

Dear Fellow Chappies, I thought you might be interested in the results of my efforts to procure Illinois Prairie Pioneer Certificates for my grandkids based on the fact that our CHAPMAN ancestors were in IL prior to 1851. The IL State Genealogical Society is offering these to anyone who has proof. Perhaps there are other CFA members who would like to apply as there were m!Uly, many Chappies in early IL, many in Pike County. .

Anyone interested in obtaining an application for an IL Prairie Pioneer Certificate may write to:

Marie Martine Murphy Chair Prairie Pioneer Committee 49 Taft Drive Rochester, IL 62563-9200 Ph# (217) 498-7080 There is a $10 application fee which I think is

well worth it. They are writing a book! I certainly enjoy this genealogy hobby and am

currently completing the requirement for Certified Genealogical Record Searcher from the Board for Certification of Genealogists at P.O. Box 5816, Falmouth, VA 22403-5816. As a retired school librarian, I am keenly aware of how important it is that we not only pass down word of mouth family history, but that.we also are very careful to document this information from primary sources. Primary sources are any that we recorded at or near the actual time of the event.

I have found, rust hand, that if we pass on information that has been given to us by word of mouth only, that is can be in error. Sometimes, because secrets are being protected, but also because the human mind does not record events as accurately as a computer. We forget, we get mixed up. A document that is recorded at the time of the event, like a land record, a birth, marriage,· or death certificate is much more likely to be accurate.

I continue to enjoy the Chapman Family Association Newsletter and Chapman Chatter. Thanks to all of you for your efforts in our behalf.
