STORYOF THE

MONTH

It is a proud year for the Golder Trust for Orphans. 2018 marks our 15th year of operation! We will be celebrating this year by featuring stories per edition to highlight some of the life changing moments in the lives of the children and communities Golder donors have impacted through their support!

As reflected in our “Conversations on our first 50 years” by John Boyd in 2010, the Golder Trust for Orphans began in 2003 after the first Principal’s meeting in Africa. Consultants undertaking development projects in Africa realised the magnitude of the problem of children orphaned within the communities. Due to the number of children, placing children into an institutional organisation like a traditional orphanage would not be possible. As most of the children were from rural areas and the economy mainly agriculturally based, the concept was to have commercial farms where the children could live in the environment that was close to their original community, with the profit from the farm supporting the orphans.

At the time, Rick Firlotte was instrumental in guiding the Trust in understanding what could and could not be achieved and ‘Golderised’ the concept for the Trust. One of the main examples of this, after discussions around the different models, was that the Trust decided to work through established Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs). In this way, it would be supporting NGOs that had the same values as Golder.

The Golder Trust is in essence a partnership funding orgainisation that can work with local communities to help locally based orgainsations to improve the lives of orphaned and vulnerable children and young adults in impoverished communities.

WORKSHOPFirst NGO Workshop (2010)

The NGO Workshop is a unique opportunity offered by the Golder Trust to all NGOs. This workshop allows all NGOs to meet one another and to discuss successes, challenges and plan for future projects. By meeting similar organisations, NGOs are able to share ideas and forge new contacts, all forming part of the greater support network through the Golder Trust.

We are so proud of our leaders, colleagues, supporters, partner organisations, the communities and especially the children for all the many achievements over the last 15 years, we have all come such a long way and look forward to this continued success in the future!

Some of our key milestones over the last 15 years!

OUR THREE OBJECTIVES:

Provide initial grant funding to meet short term needs of locally based NGOs who are trying to help children.

Partner with organisations to develop ideas for long term self-sustaining, income-generating opportunities and for the Trust to invest in those projects. The intention of these entrepreneurial activities is to raise money to go directly to supporting the children.

PROJECTS

Celebrating 15 Years of Life Changing Moments!

A reflection from one of our newest NGOs in Malawi

As we look back over the last couple of months we see a big change in our orphans. These are a few pictures taken on the first day that they arrived at the orphanage. These children were neglected and scared but now things have changed. Not only have the clothes changed, but their faces tell a story. “The orphanage is a relatively new project but so much good has happened. We thank Golder for their input very much.”

Golder Trust began assisting the Malawi project in 2017. We became aware of this new project through one of our current NGO partners. Since our initial site visit, Golder donors have enabled the Trust to survey and drill a water well (borehole). Once the yield was determined, the associated pumps and irrigation works were installed accordingly.

The Trust is grateful to our donors and supporters. Thank you for your continued support over the years, although we are highlighting some of the incredible stories, this is only a glimpse of the difference you have made in the lives of others.

Irrigate crops during the dry months and provide a sustainable food source within those months for the community.

Beyond being a direct water source, having this water has enabled the project to:

Provide employment to farm workers from the surrounding communities all year round.

Supply water to the brick making operation. The project (supported by the community) makes their own bricks to build structures needed for the children, their families and the local enterprises.

Golder Trust for Orphans is predominantly funded by the generous support of Golder Associates employees. We would not have been able to get so far without them. However, we need YOUR help too.

The donations received by employees that personally raise funds and who participate in fundraising initiatives are immensely valuable and greatly appreciated. However, it’s through monthly donations that the Trust is able to ensure it can provide reliable ongoing funding to our projects.

Please remember there is no minimum amount – every bit helps.

Please consider joining our programme – we really need your help.

Please promote the Trust and encourage your sphere of influence to contribute.
