Dear Robin:Congratulations! The Toronto Chapter of NCGR has

been officially voted into membership by the National BoardMembers as of 2:36:52 PM EDT in Owings, MD on Saturday

May 15. Yes, we really did vote you in at the second you re-quested - arent you impressed? As you know from our bylaws, all new chapters are on

probationary status for the first year. Assuming you all dontcommit murder in the first degree, your chapter will be giventhe permanent status at the end of that time. I suppose thisgives rise to the question as to whether you can commit firstdegree murder after that, but weve never had to address sucha situation.

In September on the 10th - 12th, NCGR will be hold-ing a Training Wheels Conference in Phoenix, AZ. As Chapter

president, you are entitled to attend the conference withouthaving to pay the conference fee. Of course, you would have

to responsible for your transportation, hotel and meals, but itsstill a significant saving. In the event that you cant attend youcan designate one of your officers to attend in your place withthe same privilege. Our whole purpose in doing this is to en-courage chapters to be represented at all of our conferences;hopefully youll get a group of people together from your area

and all come together. If there is anything you need from me, dont hesitate to

call or write. My best wishes to your chapter for growth andprosperity.

    Sincerely,

    Warren Kinsman

Astrological Cycles : by Dane Rudhyar(Excerpts from American Astrology May 1954)

Astrology uses several cyclic series of symbolsmainly, the 12-fold Zodiac, the Wheel of Houses, the Seriesof Planets, and, last but not least, the series of the 360 degreesof the Zodiac. It should be clear that no factor used in astrol-ogy stands alone. Even the planet would have no meaningunless seen as a series of centers of force spreading from the

central sun to the outer space the Galaxy) or in archaicastrology, from the Earth outward.

No symbol indeed has any validity all by itself, just asno one human experience (be it birth, or death) is significantall by itself in our world of time and energy. Every experiencehad antecedents, and is compelled by these antecedents to

have consequences in the future. What begins must begin-again. This is the tragedy, and at the same time the glory andecstasy of life.

Series of symbols do not have complete meaning ei-ther, if considered alone. Thus every cyclic series used in as-trology should be seen in relation to every other. Out of this

relatedness only can the true and vital significance of astrol-ogy emerge as a language of universal symbols a languageable to convey knowledge, understanding and wisdom. The

basic key to the relationship between the four main series ofastrological symbols is: experience.1. The Houses define the twelve basic fields of experience

where man must assert himself and win his battles.2. The Zodiacal Signs represent the life-energies needed forman, as a Self, to experience in these fields of activity.3. The 360 Degrees represent what might be called seed-

potentials of experience. They constitute, when ade-

quately symbolized, a cyclic series of characteristic chal-

lenges releasing opportunities for growth and self-

    development.

    O u r N C G R G r o u p I n s i g h t s :

An interesting development occurred at our eighth

meeting on July 4, 1993. We were commenting on the fourthset of degree symbols that we had studied.

The first system was Charubels which seemed omi-nous, excessively negative, and dark! The second system wasSepharials which was much easier to identify with andstrangely appropriate. The third system was Alan Leos which

again seemed rather positive in comparison to the other two. Ithad mixed reviews, some very affirmative. Ada Muirs degreesymbols were our fourth set and it was generally concludedthat she basically used Alan Leos symbols with a few addi-tions appropriate to the sign association, and the odd independ-ent degree symbol of her own. All four systems, especially

Leos seemed to develop from a distinct belief system andwere used to instill relatively appropriate spiritual ideas withregards to personal development and spiritual growth.

After studying Muirs system with out anyones beingvery impressed, a new impression of Charubel and Sepharialemerged. It terms of relating to symbols and gaining insight

from them, Leos and Muirs began to feel limp and lack-lustre. The radical contrast and distinctly good or bad interpre-tations of Charubel and Sepharial suddenly were appreciated innew light. They were risky and confronting, but as symbolsthey were alive. They challenged you. They were less intellec-tual and more vivid. Even the darker images developed into

deeper understandings over a period of time. Perhaps it is be-cause they seem so dark and blatant that they stayed in ourconsciousness longer to force a deeper resolution of whether itwas so or not. At first glance we were ready to toss out Charu-

bel, but now he has a reprieve. It will be interesting indeed tosee if this perception maintains itself after the study of theSabian Symbols by Marc Edmond Jones, which we will beginin the fall.

    Charubels Aquarius 17

A naked man, having a serpent coiled around the lowerpart of the body. A vicious degree; denotes one subject tofilthy habits and deeds; he that hath this degree on the ascen-dant should Know himself and seek to conquer his evil na-ture.

My natal Sun is at 16 58 Aquarius.

There is some truth to this. I do have some filthy habitssuch as smoking, occasionally drinking and smoking (grass),exhibitionism. I have learned to know myself better over thelast few years and have conquered some of my evil nature, ifyou wish to call it this. It is a rather harsh statement from the

part of Charubel but I can understand it in the context of the

    late 18th century. .......CT

My natal Sun is in the 17th degree of Aquarius.

Several years ago I lived in a third floor studio apart-ment in a large walk-up building. The tenant in the apartment

beneath mine, a young man who was unemployed, often sat onthe stairs near the second floor landing, staring out the win-

dow. One day I came up the stairs to find him in his usual spotwith a long grey snake wrapped around his upper body. Sincethis was an old building, my first thought was, are there anyholes in my floors or walls where a snake could crawl in? Ilived with two very petite cats who were often taken to be kit-tens. The bathroom had been remodelled and everything

looked secure. The main room and hallway had wall to wallcarpeting and I crawled around on my hands and knees, mak-ing sure the floor was solid underneath and there were noholes in the wood. This neighbour continued to sit in the hallwith his snake from time to time. He often invited me to joinhim while he fed his snake dinner. I declined. Luckily, I was

already planning to move out of that building and only had afew weeks of passing the man with the snake in the hall.

Oddly enough, about 12 years earlier, I lived in a simi-

lar three-story walk up building in Chicago in the trendy Bel-mont Harbour neighbourhood. My friend and I shared a thirdfloor apartment, and five other apartments shared the sameentrance and stairwell. One night my roommate came homeasking if I had seen the woman standing on the second floorlanding with the snake wrapped around her upper body. No, I

hadnt, and I dont recall ever seeing that snake myself. Thesnake lady, though, told my roommate that this was her newpet and they lived across the hall from the apartment beneathours. ........DN

    LIBRA 24

My natal Sun radiates at 23 18 Libra. I found somesignificance in Charubels, Sepharials, and Leos degreesymbolism. At first association, especially with Charubel, Ifelt that the manner and attitude of the degree interpretationsrather repulsive and in places even unethical. However afterdeeper reflection I am learning to listen. Some gems just looklike stones from the outside.

LI 24 (Charubel) A big man. He resembles a giant, but

the lower limbs look black; this appears to creep upwards.

I am not a big man and nowhere near a giant. In size Iam now about 5 ft. 8 in. As a young boy and teenager I wasmuch smaller than most people in my class. I grew a lot be-

tween 15 and 17. I have over the years managed to hurt myfeet, ankles, and hips (in that order) through accidents, andthey did indeed creep upwards.Char....The one who has this degree will be the subject of

many misfortunes, and liable to numerous losses. ....Yes, indeed, I have suffered many significant

losses and setbacks. I do consider these to be the cornerstonesor foundations of whatever wisdom I have developed.

tal figure carefully, and it is possible by so doing that he

may be able to master what some call destiny. This part still remains to be proved, however, so far sogood.

LIB 24 (Sepharial) A solitary tree upon a rocky height,

behind which is a dark and theatening cloud.

This symbol is uncannily close to my spiritual vision. After spending the better part of two years in a black roommeditating, a vision came via a lightning bolt during a darkand threatening storm.

Seph.... It denotes a person of much independence of

spirit, self-confidence, pride, and no little love of distinc-

tion.I have always searched for my own vision and fol-

lowed my own spiritual voice. I have been deeply influencedby the teachers of several religions but I have not been able tochoose just one. I have a will to be special and the best. I havealways related to my own uniqueness, one way or another.

Seph....The native will suffer on account of his isolated

Probably so. I have spent much time alone. Solitarydisciplines can threaten relationships.

I consider them the completion of old debts, and the begin-nings of wisdom.

lated distinction, he will fall under the jealous hand of his

    enemies.

If one does ones best and it lessens the glory of oth-ers, should one try to do less than his or her best?

Seph.... It is a degree of PRIDE.

Pride and humiliation seem to come hand in hand.

LI 24(Alan Leo) Negative temperament, prone to self-indulgence and given to many amours: health troubles.

Negative in terms of being reflective and introspec-tive with reservations about outer-social reality, ........ yes, thats me.

Prone to self indulgence ..... I cannot deny my in-dulgent side but it is not absolute. I can do without if I sochoose.

Many Amours ..... three marriages and a couple ofsignificant other relationships might be considered many bysome.

Health troubles ..... not much, but I have had sig-

nificant extremes of physical experience. Generally my healthis good.

For me, as you can see, I have found relevance andsignificant seed ideas in all three authors works. It simplytook some reflective time to assimilate the implications and tosee them in my life. After doing so, I feel that I have grown a

little and learned a lot. Thank-you Charubel, Sepharial, andAlan Leo! ...........RA.

    Sepharials LEO 25

A reversed triangle upon a red ground. It denotes a personof. a very passionate and emotional nature, who will sufferthrough the allurements of the other sex, and at some time inhis life will be liable to suffocation or drowning. The nativewill certainly be in danger through the watery element. Thefortunes will be in danger of reversal, and that through the

passional nature of the native. The nature is incapable of anysteady effort, and is, in short, as soft and unstable as water. It is a degree of INSTABILITY.

My natal Pluto is in the 25th degree of Leo. Sepharials degree

symbolism for 25 Leo was outstanding to me.

    For example:

At two years old I almost drowned in a lake. My mother savedme.

At four years old I set fire to the house and almost suffocatedin the smoke. My mother saved me.

At twelve years old I fell into a well and almost drowned. Mymother saved me.

At thirteen years old, a friend of mine who was afraid of deepwater almost drowned me. I was rescued by a friend.

Can this be merely coincidence? .....CM

This is a special series designed to look at the degree symbols

in the horoscopes of violent criminals and victims. Many ofthe older degree symbols such as Charubels contain somerather harsh meanings. This section should allow for some ofthe darker and more insidious interpretations to be explored. Itwill also challenge the validity of some of the more harmoni-

ous degree systems. We are not certain where this will all leadto, but we do know that we will get there by degrees.

bludgeoned, or strangled to death; two thirteen year old girls, one fourteen year old girl, two sixteen year old girls, a nineyear old boy and a sixteen year old boy. Four other teenagers

were also murdered brutally between July 21 and 31.Olson pleaded guilty to eleven murders on January 14,

1982. In the midst of great anxiety of the childrens parentsand having little or no clues as to the whereabouts of the bod-ies, police accepted a plea bargain deal with Olson which out-raged the country. He agreed to tell them where the bodies

were in exchange for a $90,000. trust fund for his own wifeand child. While in prison Olson aroused further ire by pub-lishing a book about his crimes and making a profit thereby. His book was entitled Runaways, Ramblers, and Rascals.

Canadians were generally horrified enough by thecrimes, and were outraged by the police treatment of Olson.Few could believe their ears about the ninety thousand dollartrust fund. Fewer still could fathom his ability to use the sys-tem and publish his book about the crimes.

Using the sets degree symbols that we have studied so far Ihave endeavoured to highlight the most outstanding. No doubtwe will return to this chart with other degree associations at a

later date. The readers are also challenged to explore these de-grees further on their own. They are invited to respond by let-ter or at one of our monthly NCGR -Toronto meetings.

under conditions which require great secrecy and caution.

The nature is reserved and self-reliant. He will rise to posi-tions of authority, and will serve his country and king. It is a

degree of AUTHORITY.11(Alan Leo) Hard and grasping nature, astute and

    selfish:purification through love.

Sepharials interpretation has some uncanny associa-tions. The children initially trusted him enough to have a drink

with him. His ability to use his secret knowledge to his advan-tage in dealing with the police and the courts borders on gen-ius, ...... insidious genius, ........ certainly not stupid!

Alan Leos comments also appear astute. Hard andgrasping is obvious. Perhaps the concept of purification

through love would reveal some of his inner belief? It cannotbe argued that he did not provide for his own!

Clifford Olsons Moon is at 11 21 Libra:

12 (Charubel)A man with a bow in his hand; but he has

no arrow. A person of splendid parts and excellent abilities, but who is ever unfortunate in being deprived of the meansof effecting his purpose. When an opportunity presents itself,he finds himself unable to turn it to advantage.

12 (Sepharial)A fair woman looking at her face in a

hand-glass.It denotes a person of a frivolous and light-hearted disposition, improvident and foolish, neither regard-ing the future or profiting by the past: laughing in the face offate, and closing the eyes to experience: self-centred and

worldly. The native will come by much misfortune, but

will flaunt his colours to the end of a foolish career. It is a

    thy: confinement through ill-health.

Charubel with his comment, Deprived of the means to

effect his purpose could throw insight into his violence andrage.

Sepharial points to neither regarding the future orprofiting by the past but Olson seems to have carried out bothcleverly. He certainly did laugh in the face of fate and in

the face of Canadians. Meeting misfortune and flaunting hiscolours to the end of a foolish career is outstandingly appropri-ate.

Alan Leo seems to be the furthest off in implying agentle and retiring nature.

Clifford Olsons Asc is at 15 36

Virgo: 16 (Charubel)A man wading through mud knee-deep. Theopposite bank towards which he is struggling is enveloped in

fog. Denotes a hard life, a struggling life, a life bestrewn

with the wrecks of perished hopes and abortive specula-

tions, the final one of all being a plunge into the dark.

16 (I Ching) Hexagram 29, line 3: The Abysmal, Water. The Abyss doubled. Double danger.

The third place (the line for 15 to 16) in this hexa-gram deserves reading. It suggests that every step leads intodanger and that escape is out of the question. One mustwait until a way out shows itself!

Charubel here seems to hit the personal outlook on liferight on. It seems to reveal a desperate kind of logic or per-sonal belief.

The I Ching hexagram for this degree is also blatantlyapparent and deeply insightful.

This article marks the beginning of a series highlight-

ing the life and works of Canadian Astrologers. We hopethrough our monthly meetings to evolve these articles into a

book on the History of Astrology in Canada. We appeal to our readers and members for assistance.

We are collecting astrologers names, groups, stories, confer-ence programs, and even the names of prominent Canadians

known to use astrology. This is a long term project and it isbecoming more fascinating every day.

    Paul G. Cl ancy

Paul Clancy was one of Canadas most famous as-trologers. He was born on June 29, 1897, at 8:40 AM, in To-ronto, Ontario. Our sources are the Sabian Symbols, AmericanAstrology, and Circle Book of Charts. It should be mentionedhowever, that EST was in effect in Toronto since 1895. Day-light savings was not used back then but the 75W time stan-dard was in effect. This forces a correction on the charts previ-ously published as Local Mean Time was used in error.

(The earlier time-change references that they used must havebeen incomplete and faulty.) The difference is small but phe-nomenal. It puts Pauls Mars into the first house rather than thetwelfth within 11 minutes of the exact conjunction. On observ-ing his career, one would quickly agree.

Paul Clancy was the Founder and Editor of one of theworlds best astrology magazines, American Astrology. He

founded it in March 1933 and was the editor until 1953 whenhe took ill. His wife, Joanne S. Clancy successfully took overand maintained a top quality publication.

I found it somewhat amusing that the founder ofAMERICAN Astrology Magazine would be a Canadian, buton further reflection I realised that an American would not

have called it American Astrology!Paul was a true pioneer. He dared to publish technical

material and calculations in the magazine. He included aspec-tarians, ephemerides, and serious calculations. He wrote thedaily predictions and many other articles. He also had a goodsense of humour. Paul embraced challenges and controversy.

He would give differences of opinion an equal chance of ex-pression, and let the truth prevail. Controversy can lead to bet-ter information and Paul used it to significantly increase the

publics knowledge of astrology.Paul had a wonderful ability to pull together an excel-

lent team of astrology writers. American Astrology magazine

also attracted letters from many prominent mystics and othersuch characters. Certainly he was the right man, in the rightplace, at the right time! He willed, he dared, and he conquered.

He was indeed one of Astrologys top journalists.
