Mobile  Operator  Challenge

Mobile traffic, voice and data.

Already more data bytes than voice bytes in mobile networks.

Based upon growth rates to date, Ericsson estimates that capacity will need to increase by a factor of 1000. Where will this come from? According to Ericsson’s research, this challenge must be met using several different approaches.

Page 7: New Business Opportunities: Small Cells and Wholesale DAS

Why  Small  Cells?

•  Improving  Coverage    –  Significant  percentage  of  mobile

voice  originates  in  the  home  –  Poor  coverage  leads  to  unhappy

customers  –  churn  –  Penetra/on  losses  work  to

operators  advantage

•  Reducing  Opera/onal  Costs  –  Backhaul  of  cell  tower  traffic

accounts  for  20%  of  mobile  operator  OPEX

–  Site  acquisi/on,  leasing  costs,  power  costs

–  Capacity  demand  is  expected  to  growth  over  200  /mes

•  Increasing  Revenue/Reducing  Churn  –  Increase  data  usage  inside  and  outside

home  –  Home  zone  tariffs  for  voice  and  data  –  New  enabled  services

Page 8: New Business Opportunities: Small Cells and Wholesale DAS

3G/4G  Network  Evolu/ons

•  LTE  is  evolving  from  data  only  to  data  and  voice

•  4G  Smartphone  shipments  will  grow  200%  in  2013,    driving  need  for  3G  voice

•  VoLTE  is  coming,  but  it’s  not  here  yet  •  LTE  coverage  while  growing  is  not

con/guous  •  3G  networks  con/nue  to  generate

revenue    •  VoWiFi  for  capacity,  performance,

and  cost  reduc/on

Yum Coffee Shop

Hi!  I’m  at  Yum’s.    I  got  a  coupon  on  my  phone  for  Super  Mocha  Delight  coffee.  It  is  absolutely  divine.    I  am  watching  my  complementary  news  summary  that  is  streaming  to  my  phone!    Oh  –  and  I  am  entered  in  a  draw  to  go  to  Mexico!

Funny  –  I  saw  the  promo/on  for  the  free  trip  and  signed  up  for  Yum’s  loyalty  program!  Instead  of  the  news,  I  chose  the  Sports  Summary  video–  I  love  to  watch  the  home-‐runs  while  drinking  coffee.    I  can’t  wait  to  try  the  Super  Mocha  Delight!  I  see  you  at  their  store  2  blocks  away  –  wait  for  me!!!

Leveraging  Success  Factors  for  New  Opportuni/es

Page 22: New Business Opportunities: Small Cells and Wholesale DAS

Managing  User  Experience

•  Carriers  Focus  on  Customer  &  Service  Management    •  Venues  Provide  an  IT  Centric  Focus  •  Neutral  Host  Providers  Bound  by  Carrier  SLAs  •  Applica/on  Providers  focus  on  Availability  •  User  Expecta/ons  /  Experience?

Art  Meierdirk    INOC

Page 23: New Business Opportunities: Small Cells and Wholesale DAS

Carrier  Focus  -‐  Changing

•  Originally  the  Carrier  Owned  the  User  Experience  –  Carrier  owned  MTSO  provided  all  user  services  –  Carrier  owned  distribu/on  –  Carrier  owned  service  delivery  to  the  “handset”

•  A  variety    of  service  &  applica/on  providers  are  changing  ownership  –  Data  &  video  service  providers  driving  usage  to  new  highs  –  Carriers  count  on  “offload”  via  WiFi  services  –  Even  voice  services  may  come  from  other  providers

•  Carriers  are  being  pressured  by  limited  resources  to  use  partners  &  SLAs  manage  user  experience

Page 24: New Business Opportunities: Small Cells and Wholesale DAS

Integrated  Service  Management  –  Know  What  to  Watch

•  Provider  Metrics  can  be  tracked  locally  –  Small  Cell  Call  &  Data  performance  metrics

•  Infrastructure  Metrics  can  be  tracked  locally  –  Transport  (DAS,  Small  Cell,  WiFi)  and  Backhaul  –  Switching  (LAN,  management  networks)

•  Hosts  &  Applica/ons  (availability  &  performance)?  •  User  Experience  –  Ask  the  user  or  venue

–  There  are  applica/ons  that  measure  user  experience  –  Help  desk(s)  for  internal  and  external  customers

•  Coordinated  support  is  the  key  –  may  require  partnership

Page 25: New Business Opportunities: Small Cells and Wholesale DAS

User  Experience  Ownership

•  No  single  service  provider  has  an  exclusive  on  delivery  of  services  –  Voice  /  Data  /  Video  /  IM  –  File  sharing  /  networking  /  mobile  applica/ons

•  Users  access  services  from  a  mul/tude  of  providers  •  Requires  shared  responsibility  for  the  user  experience.

–  Consider  becoming  part  of  the  solu/on

•  Leverage  your  exis/ng  investment  with  programs  to  improved  user  experience  to  gain  new  opportuni/es
