The Board voted for the levy ballot term of 30 years not to exceed $14,365,000 for the building project. This equates to less than $60.00 more per year on a $100,000.00 assessed house that is being paid on the current high school millage for a brand new K-8 facility. NEW BREMEN FACILITY UPDATE

Since April of 2015, the Board of Education has been working on the new K-8 building pre-bond work. We have worked with Garmann Miller as our pre-bond firm, determined a location, and have worked with the Ohio Schools Facilities Commission (OSFC) to develop a master plan. We have formed a Levy Committee that is moving forward preparing for our district’s campaign for the May 2017 election.

New Bremen School is enrolled in the Kroger Community Rewards Program. Through this program, Kroger contributes dollars to eligible Non-Profit Organizations based upon eligible purchases. Eligible purchases are those made at any Cincinnati Division Kroger Food Store by an eligible participant (Kroger Plus cardholder) who presents their Kroger Plus Card at the time of purchase. Any Kroger Plus Cardholder can designate New Bremen Local Schools as their Community Reward recipient. Simply login to your Kroger Plus account, and click on “Enroll” beneath the Community Rewards section. Kroger Plus cardholders enrolling in Community Rewards will continue to receive all the benefits of their card (i.e. fuel points, etc.), but will also help New Bremen Schools to earn dollars donated to our school. As a reminder, New Bremen Schools and the Cardinal Pride Parent Organization also participate in Box Tops for Education, IGA Hometown Label Saver, and Coke Rewards. It is through the generosity of these programs that our school is able to purchase additional items such as playground equipment, technology items to enhance student learning (i.e. video cameras), as well as other activities like Family Reading Night that provide extended educational value to our children. Box Tops, Campbells and IGA labels, as well as Coke Reward bottle caps can be turned in to school where we collect them and submit to the sponsoring company in exchange for these donated dollars. A big “Thank You” to all members of our community who support our school with these activities!

EDUCATION FOUNDATION CONTINUES TO ASSIST

STUDENTS WITH ACADEMIC SCHOLARSHIPS

The New Bremen Education Foundation is pleased to announce the opening of its 2017 fund-raising campaign to generate scholarship money for graduates of New Bremen High School. In the first year of operation, the foundation awarded seven academic scholarships. In 2016, the foundation awarded eighty-two scholarships totaling approximately $79,610.00. The Education Foundation Trustees invite individuals, businesses, and organizations to consider a contribution to this worthy cause. The amount of each donation may remain confidential; however, the names of all donors will be released during the scholarship presentation at graduation unless requested otherwise. There are two different types of donations. The first is an annual contribution, all of which is distributed as scholarship monies to this year’s recipients. Secondly, donors of large sums of cash, stocks, or bonds may specify their gift as a Perpetual Donation. These donations are invested with only the interest being distributed each year. The names of individuals or groups who make perpetual donations are included on the donor list every year following the donation. Any group or individual interested in making a contribution should contact Mr. Jeff McCollum, the Foundation Treasurer, at 567-286-0391 by April 15. All contributions are tax deductible.

NEWS FROM OUR SCHOOL PSYCHOLOGIST

It is hard to believe we are well into the second half of the year. Our focus continues to be on Character Education. This year we are learning about the 7 Habits of Healthy Kids. Students have been participating in Habit of the Month based lessons weekly, facilitated by Mr. Chad Wells, Mrs. Shelley This, and myself. A student from each grade (K-4) who exemplifies the Habit of the Month has been recognized and awarded with a pizza party. The Habits of the Month for the second half of the year are as follows: January Habit 4 — Think Win-Win February Habit 5 — Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood March Habit 6 — Synergize April/May Habit 7 — Sharpen the Saw Our seventh and eighth grade students have continued to focus on Character Development. This fall, students participated in an interest inventory and personality inventory. These results will be kept on file for each student as they continue to grow and contemplate career paths. Results will also be used to identify students with specific career interests. Speakers from the community will then be brought in during lunch for a Career Café in which the identified students will be invited to attend and learn more about their careers of interest. On the testing front, state-wide assessments are set to begin March 14. All testing will be done online this year as required by the state. Testing is completed to gauge student achievement throughout the year. Results from each assessment are used by teachers to target areas of deficit and monitor growth. For a full list of assessment dates please visit www.newbremenschools.org.

K-4 PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Students in grades kindergarten through four again took the STAR benchmarking assessments in reading and math in January. This online assessment partners with our Accelerated Reader program. The STAR reading assessment assists in determining reading levels for each individual student. The reading level then provides a range of books for students to read at their recommended reading level. This also assists teachers in creating Accelerated Reader point goals for each nine weeks as well as determining which students need intervention or enrichment. Students are doing a great job reaching their goals!

Our third and fourth grade teachers have been busy

preparing our students for the Ohio’s State Tests. These assessments are similar to last year; however, this year all students will be taking the assessments online using computers. All third and fourth grade students will be taking tests in English language arts and math. Fourth grade students will also be tested in social studies. The testing schedule for third and fourth grade students is listed below:

Third Grade Fourth Grade March 23-24 English Language Arts March 21-22 English Language Arts April 11-12 Math April 6-7 Math April 20 Social Studies Our kindergarten, first, second, and third grade

students will be completing State Diagnostic Testing in May. Students in kindergarten, first, and second grades will complete diagnostic tests in math and writing. The third grade will take a diagnostic assessment in only writing. These tests are designed to help us identify students who may need additional intervention and to assist teachers in making instructional decisions. The teachers will send home information regarding the specific dates of the tests for each grade level.

Kindergarten screening for the 2017-2018 school year

will be held March 28-29. We currently have 58 students registered for screening. Children need to be five years old by August 1, 2017 to be kindergarten eligible. If you have any questions about screening or need to register your child, please call the elementary office at 419-629-3244.

The annual fourth grade spring musical will be held

Thursday, March 30 at 9:30 AM and 7:30 PM. This year’s musical is entitled Hansel and Gretel.

First grade has been very busy in 2017. We have been enjoying reading new stories every week in our reading books. There are many fun and interesting stories that we have had the opportunity to read. Along with the new stories, we are learning many concepts to help us to be able to sound out and spell many new words. Because of this, our stories get more difficult as the year goes on. We are also learning about Martin Luther King. We read books about how brave he was and all the changes he brought about for the African American people. We learned about integration and treating everyone equally. In February, we will also be studying two special presidents, Abraham Lincoln and George Washington. We will learn about them and why they were very special presidents. In math, we have been working on addition and subtraction strategies, place value, and two digit addition and subtraction. We have also been doing addition time tests. Everyone enjoys trying to get more problems done every time they do a time test! We are having a great year and it's so hard to believe that our first grade year is half over. We are busy working on projects to have up for Open House in March. We can't wait to show off our hard work!

THIRD GRADE NEWS

Third grade is continuing to work hard and make great progress! The students are showing growth on their multiplication and division facts and meeting Timed Tests goals each week. The students have been working hard to meet individual Accelerated Reader goals. New goals for the third nine weeks are being made and they are off to a great start! The students completed their very first Ohio Achievement Test in November. This was the first year we have taken this test online. We are very proud of their hard work! We should get the results of this test on February 8. Once we have the information, we will be sending out student letters shortly thereafter.

Flat Stanleys are still arriving from family and friends around the world. So far, Stanley has been spotted in places across the United States. He has also traveled to Indonesia, Singapore, and Canada! The students learn a lot from the letters and pictures that come back from Stanley as he continues his adventures. In science classes, the students have learned about matter, geology, and sound. In social studies, we are focusing on economics. We look forward to our annual assembly line projects. Before Christmas, we learned a lot about other cultures and their holiday traditions. We are working our way through our reading series. The classes have read many stories from different genres, including historical and realistic fiction, non-fiction, and poetry. We are excited to continue through this series and have some guest speakers that can share their life experiences with the students on the topics they are reading about in class. There are many things to look forward to for the rest of the year. Our field trip to Carillon Park in Dayton will be in the early spring. We will also be doing our New Bremen history unit, including our walk around town. Thank you for all of the help you give your children! TITLE ONE READING

We are enjoying our bigger room this year in Title One reading! We have lots of space to move around to help us learn. We are using a multisensory language program called Fundations. It is research-based and provides students with skills to help them become fluent, independent readers and spellers. The program teaches students the structure of words in a systematic and cumulative manner. Following this system helps students to trust that they can learn English within the system, and ultimately, deal with the irregularities of the language. The program begins in kindergarten and builds as the students increase in grade level. I am very pleased and comfortable with the program and feel the students are benefiting from its regular use and cumulative structure. I work with students in kindergarten, first grade, and second grade to help improve their reading, spelling, language, and writing skills. In kindergarten, students are also learning to read and spell sight words. They are learning that some words are “tricky” and have letters that cannot be sounded out. In first and second grade, students are using Raz-Kids which is an on-line reading activity. Students listen to books/stories on the iPad at each of their reading levels AND they read the story orally and record themselves reading. They enjoy listening and following along with the text along with listening to themselves read the stories aloud. The year is going by so fast, but the kids have been great and they are learning every day. Seeing their excitement and enthusiasm for reading has been very rewarding!

ELEMENTARY MUSIC NEWS

Happy 2017! It simply does not seem possible that we are already halfway to summer vacation – what a whirlwind this school year has been already! One of the most enjoyable aspects about teaching a multi-age subject is that I have the opportunity to watch each child grow and develop year after year. Children who were hesitant about singing, dancing, or playing instruments last year are now eagerly asking what we’re going to do in our next class before I’ve barely begun that day’s lesson. In October, the fourth graders attended a performance by the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra at the Schuster Center in Dayton, Ohio. The theme of the program was “Musical Postcards from America.” Students had the opportunity to learn how music can tell a story, describe a landscape, or capture the spirit of a culture by listening to particular compositions that reflected a certain characteristic of the United States. In November, the third graders performed two choir songs at the Veterans Day Assembly, “To Those Who Serve” and “A Patriotic Salute”.

December was a very busy month for the elementary general music students. The second graders performed “The Elves and The Shoemaker” at their Christmas Musical this year, and all of the elementary general music students in kindergarten through sixth grade performed the program “An Old-Fashioned Christmas” at our annual Christmas Assembly the day before Christmas vacation. The students particularly enjoyed rewriting the words to “Jingle Bells”, which turned out to be a story about our elementary school principal, and then having the opportunity to share that with her as well. In April, the fourth graders will be performing their Spring Musical, Hansel and Gretel. They are eager to get moving with rehearsals and we all look forward to sharing this concert event with you!

Another quarter has flown by and 2017 has arrived! Fifth grade students were very busy during the second quarter. In Mrs. Moeller’s math class, the students began the second quarter finishing up the Division Facts Math Wizards competition. Students also learned how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide fractions using manipulatives, drawing models, and applying them in a real-world situation by baking Christmas treats in class. The treats were not only for the students, but were also donated to the New Bremen Fire Department and New Bremen Police Department. The Christmas baking project could not have been possible without parent/grandparent volunteers who sent in supplies and volunteered in the classroom. Thank you! And a special thank you to Susan Krieg, the owner of The Pie Shell, for speaking to the students about real world uses of fractions and for bringing the students a delicious treat! In Mrs. Timmerman’s reading and language arts class, the students learned more about nonfiction text structures and features, figurative language, and grammar rules. Reading groups continue to be an enjoyable part of language arts class as students are working on various projects related to the novel they are reading with their small group. Also, before winter break, students were able to try out for the spelling bee. Ten students from the fifth grade qualified for the spelling bee on February 7 at 9 AM. Mrs. Steinke's class finished up their unit on life science by applying their knowledge of ecosystems to the painting that the K-5 students completed with the Ecologists from Aullwood Nature Center. The students have also been using the Gizmo program to manipulate variables in an individualized setting. During the third quarter, students will focus on physical science and on social studies while studying the various regions of the United States. The fifth graders also participated in a random acts of kindness project during the holiday season to brighten the lives of others. As a culminating event to our random acts of kindness, students visited the residents at Elmwood to spread Christmas cheer. We hope you enjoyed your holiday break and are looking forward to a great 2017!

NEWS IN SEVENTH AND EIGHTH GRADE MATH

The seventh and eighth graders are working very hard and making great progress in math class! Math comes easy for some people and is more difficult for others. The mindset that we have and the way that we approach math can make all the difference. I read the following from an online article and thought I would share with all of you. I wish you all a great semester!

Ms. Jan Beyke Growth Mindset in Math In general, a growth mindset is the belief that intelligence and ‘smartness’ can also be learned and that the brain grows from experience and effort. The opposite, a fixed mindset, is the idea that you are smart, or you are not. In math, that translates into “some people are good at math, and some are not.” Did you know that praising efforts rather than intelligence or results can impact your child’s ability to persevere in challenges? The goal is to have children thrive on challenges and see failures, not as a sign of low intelligence, but as a learning opportunity. Brain research tells us that making mistakes actually wires more connections into the brain! When a person has a growth mindset, they accept challenges, see their efforts as worthwhile, and are open to learning from mistakes. Students with a growth mindset achieve at higher levels than those with fixed mindsets. How can you help? Some simple ways: Adding “yet” when they claim they are “not good at

this” (Respond: “You are not good at this yet.”) Ask questions that focus on their effort and choices

and get them to reflect on satisfaction of that effort (e.g. What did you learn today? What mistake did you make that taught you something? What did you try hard at today?)

Model this yourself as you share about your day (www.edugains.com)

SEVENTH AND EIGHTH GRADE INTERVENTION

Seventh grade reading class recently finished a unit on Rick Riordan’s The Lightning Thief, which incorporated plot diagram, character analysis, and theme. They became proficient at identifying the elements of exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution throughout reading the book. To sum up the unit, the students constructed a five-paragraph essay utilizing compare and contrast of characters. Next, we will be taking on the recently authored classic Holes by Louis Sachar. Students will take on a variety of tasks to relate Sachar’s theme of perseverance to our district’s moto of grit, leadership, and relationship. Math is moving along as students were introduced to the concept of algebra through lessons on combining like-terms, distributive property, rates, proportions, and percent. In upcoming units, math students will explore expressions, equations, and inequalities.

Mr. Bill Evans Intervention Specialist

This semester has flown by and these groups of junior high and high school students are moving on and the next groups are coming in, which makes this an exciting time of year! This year has been great so far with lots of projects and discussions about many different relevant issues such as nutrition, fitness, different systems of the body, and self-esteem to name a few. Yoga was a new activity introduced in the JH physical education classes this year and the kids were surprised I think at how challenging it was! It will be sad to see this group go because they have been so great, but I also look forward to interacting with the new groups of students. The fifth and sixth graders are working hard learning the fundamentals of team sports like soccer, volleyball, basketball, and football. I am lucky enough to have these students for the whole year so more fun-filled fitness activities are on the way. I look forward to the students’ continuation of hard work and enthusiasm.

SEVENTH AND EIGHTH GRADE

SCIENCE NEWS In eighth grade science, we have been focusing on dynamic changes of Earth’s surface through time, constructive and destructive forces, and, finally, diversity of species. The students completed a project in which they adopted a dinosaur and completed research about their chosen species. We have spent some time looking at the evolution of animals, such as the whale, and investigating what changes caused the species to evolve over time. We will be focusing on reproduction of species, inherited traits, and begin forces between objects in the third quarter. In seventh grade science, we have been spending a lot of time focusing on Earth and space science by studying thermal energy transfers in ocean currents, the moon phases, and tides. The students explored the phases of the move by modeling each phase and analyzing where the moon was located in reference to the sun and the Earth. Through the use of food coloring, cold water, and salt, the students modeled density currents to see how they form over time. In the third quarter, we will be focusing on biomes, abiotic and biotic factors that help organisms survive, the transfer of matter, and begin the properties of matter. The seventh grade students are wrapping up their STEM Fair projects and will be presenting their products to the judges on February 15 from 12:00 -3:00 in the afternoon. There will also be an Open House for parents, family, and friends to come in and view all the projects on February 15 from 3:00 - 5:00 in the small gym. If you are unable to attend, projects will also be displayed during Open House in March.

Mrs. Kayla Steinemann Junior High Science Teacher

EIGHTH GRADE LANGUAGE ARTS

Eighth graders kicked off the third quarter with their leadership and grit presentations. Although it was difficult, this year’s eighth grade class rose to the challenge and created interactive presentations to show their middle school peers how leadership and grit are essential ingredients of success. Congratulations to the eighth graders on a job well done!

As we progress through the third quarter, our focus has turned to research. Students are developing skills in proper research practice, including—but not limited to—evaluating sources to determine credibility, asking research questions, taking notes, forming citations, and seamlessly integrating source material into their writing. These skills will be integral to the students’ success in both high school and college. To practice, students will be completing a short research project.

In reading, students are working on evaluating a film adaptation of a novel. After reading a novel of their choice, students will watch the movie based upon it and analyze how faithful the film was to the original—not only in terms of plot, but also in regard to the characters, themes, and mood. As a part of this project, students also learned about some of the artistic elements that are unique to film like cinematography, editing, and sound. Using what they learned about the way these elements are used to create certain affects, students will focus on a scene in their chosen film and analyze the ways meaning is conveyed to the audience.

UPCOMING

Recently Mayor Pape hosted a community strategic planning meeting at the James F. Dicke Auditorium at New Bremen High School. Fifty-six invitations were sent seeking attendance from community members (clergy, schools, business or landownership). Nearly 45 people attended to learn more about the strategic planning efforts for the Village of New Bremen. The purpose of the strategic plan – to create a 15-year plan for our community. The working document, to be created with communi-ty input, will provide direction for future leaders to use for decisions that is in the best interest of the village. “We are seeking guidance by the community, we (council) don’t want to make all the decisions, trust us” commented Pape. For proper community planning, all gen-erations need to have a part in identifying the needs of the communi-ty. For all in attendance, Pape encouraged “Talk to people, what do we want to do? Help provide the input for the community.” In 2002, a previous study was sponsored by the New Bremen/New Knoxville Rotary Club. Poggemeyer Design Group (PDG) served as the facilitator for the 2002 study. While other entities were considered for the current strategic planning, village council chose to work with PDG on an updated study. Since their firm had gathered community history data during the previous study, the new study could be compiled more efficiently. PDG representative, Paul Tecpanecatl stated the importance of updating plans, such as reviewing land use every 5 years (residential, shopping, parks, etc.), taking into account current zoning and necessary changes. He stated comprehensive plans, like the 2002 study, should be updated every 10 years. Tecpanecatl shared the importance of getting feedback from the community, including asking high school seniors about their view of the community. While the working document is to identify what New Bremen could/should look like in 10-15 years, the strategies developed will cover short term (1-2 years), mid-range term (3-4 years) and long-term strategies (5+ years). The process will take about 5-6 months with committee meetings taking place once a month. Mid 2017, a report to the community will be made, as well as presented to village council for review. A committee of community members have volunteered their time to be a part of the development of the strategic plan. Residents are encouraged to share their thoughts with the community members. Those serving on the committee are as follows:

The first series of strategic planning meetings began in mid-Jan-uary. Meeting updates will be made available via blog posting on the village website (available on the www.newbremen.com home page, scroll down to the bottom of the page). • Detailed description of the kick-off meeting can be found on the

In December 2012, the Southwestern Auglaize County Chamber of Commerce partnered with the Village of New Bremen and the school guidance counselors in Minster, New Bremen and New Knoxville to put on the first ever “Exploration Academy” career event. On Monday, February 27th, Exploration Academy V will take place at Wright State University, Lake Campus. The committee has learned a lot over the past 4 years, and adapted to necessary changes that were identified or in some cases, requested by the students. While nearly 50 professionals serve as presenters in this one-day career event, each student only hears from 6 presenters. Of the career survey results, 4 of the career sessions are determined from the student’s selection, the other 2 are determined by the commit-tee. “If a student picks 4 health careers, that it is a good indicator that the student has been inspired to enter the health field. In this case the other 2 sessions will introduce the student to other career’s in the health field. If the student is all across the board in a variety of industries, this is an indicator that the student is searching for a career of interest”, stated Angela Hamberg, Village of New Bremen economic development director. Hamberg serves as the coordi-nator of the annual event. Each session is 20-minutes in length, during this time, the speaker discusses the education or training required of their profession, theirworking environment, the course of their work day, and the soft skills necessary for their job. The program has great value to be placed between 8th grade and sophomore year visits of career tech education held at Tri Star Career Com-pact. “The students have already been on the tour as 8th graders, so now hearing from some of the speakers sharing the necessary skills, it connects the dots for how the students have access to obtain necessary skills in a field of study. It is also important timing for the college prep path, college readiness begins long before high school graduation day”, stated Hamberg.

DID YOU....

Fire Hydrant Snow Removal The Village of New Bremen requests any resident with fire hydrants in front of their house, to please remove snow away from the hydrants. This will help the Fire Department locate the hydrants in the case of an emergency.

Street Snow Removal All village residents are reminded of the upcoming snow season. A car parked along the street creates a prob-lem for our snow plows. We ask for the cooperation of all village residents to move vehicles off the street so that the street crews can adequately and safely remove the snow off the streets during and after a snow storm. Vehicles parked on the street cause a safety problem, extra hours and expense for the crews to remove the snow. It is also a violation of the Village Ordinance for any vehi-cle to remain parked on the street over 72 hours without be-ing moved. The Police Department will be checking these vehicles that are not moved every 72 hours. The penalty is $150.00 plus court costs.

The Village of New Bremen was recently approved as a Tree City USA community for 2016. This serves as the 21st consecutive year for New Bremen. Recognition of the achievement will take place on May 3rd during the North-west Ohio Tree City USA Awards Program ceremony in the community of Lakeside, Ohio. Currently, the New Bremen tree commission is seek-ing new members. The committee meets 6 times a year,

typically in the month of January, March, May, July, September and November. If you are interested in serving on the tree commission, contact Parks superinten-dent, Mike Hibner at (419) 629-3563 or via email: [email protected]

HIGH SCHOOL PRINCIPAL NEWS

I am starting a, “Where Are They Now?” addition to our high school website where we will highlight past graduates and their achievements. Several have been posted all ready. Please check out our website to view these. Please email me at [email protected] if you would like me to send you the blank form to pass along to past graduates so they may complete it and return it to me. I prefer graduates be from the graduating class of 2013 or previous years so they are at a point where they have completed post-high school education or training and are working in their chosen career field. There is a potential change in graduation requirements related to EOC Testing for 2018 graduation requirements which are being looked at by a committee appointed by the State Board of Education. This committee is supposed to have a proposal ready by May 2017. The committee will have multiple members including the new State Superintendent of Instruction. The new State Superintendent of Instruction, Paolo DeMaria, came and visited NBHS in December. Highlights of the visit were hearing him sing with Patty Ruckman and the NBHS Choir, as well as visits to Theresa Newbright in English, Shannon Heckman in the video production lab, and Kathy Schmitmeyer in math. I expressed to him the hope for more local control in the future and continuity and stability in his work with ODE for education in New Bremen and around the state of Ohio, including the testing issues that have been mentioned previously.

Freshmen Freshman English students are beginning a poetry unit. Throughout the unit, students will read a variety of poems including lyric poems, narrative poems, dramatic poems, ballads, haikus, sonnets, and odes. Students will also write a variety of poems on their own. Students will learn many poetic devices, learn how to identify these devices, and finally, learn how to complete a written analysis of a poem. Freshmen pre-AP English students are beginning a poetry unit. Students will learn to use an AP poetry analysis strategy (TPCASTT). At the end of the unit, students will prepare a portfolio which will require them to create a collection of poems using the genres and devices learned throughout the unit. Sophomores Sophomore English students are beginning a poetry unit. Sophomore pre-AP English is learning the value of using multi-draft reading strategies. We have slowed WAY down with our material so that we can dig deeper into the pieces we read instead of simply reading pieces just to read them. They are getting very good at interpreting informational text at a higher level of thinking than they were used to. Junior English Juniors in the College Prep course are beginning their research project. Building on skills from last semester (using data bases to find source material, writing notecards paraphrasing significant information, etc.), students will select and apply types of reasoning that is most effective for their chosen topic. Juniors in the dual enrollment course are starting the semester studying Taming of the Shrew by William Shakespeare. They will compare current scientific articles about relationships to a character of their choice. Students will then write an analytical essay about the accuracy of Shakespeare’s characterization.

Senior English CP Seniors have just wrapped up reading Tim O'Brien's book The Things They Carried. They have really brought excellent questions to class discussions and are showing improving skills in interpreting what they are reading. Ask your kids about happening-truth vs. story-truth; they should be able to apply the idea to current events as well! AP Seniors have just finished reading Zora Neal Hursten's Their Eyes Were Watching God, and they have practiced AP exam questions about this work (both multiple choice and essay). We are working on brushing up on interpreting tone, which is always a struggle for high school students. Mrs. Theresa Newbright Mrs. Jodi Schumm Mrs. Jordyn Trabue

Happy New Year! The new year has begun and the science department is looking forward to using our new equipment thanks to Cardinal Pride. Cardinal Pride has donated new microscopes and electronic balances which we were in need of. In Physical Science, we are starting chemistry and the new scales will be put to use immediately as the students are learning basic properties of matter like density. Later we will be creating basic chemical reactions and balancing chemical equations. A comparative anatomy study of the shark to a human began the year in Advanced Physiology. Did you know a shark has a huge portion of their brain responsible for smell? After exploring the shark, we have been studying the brain and our senses. Students are learning how a loss of one sense means that other senses become more sensitive. They are also learning the importance of sleep in retaining knowledge. Physics has seen a change from studying motion to studying forces and energy. They are exploring Newton’s laws and how they relate to motion. As we explore forces we will look at rockets and the forces that propel a rocket. Students ordered their own rockets and will be building them and comparing the flights of the different models to see how thrust and air resistance affects them. Now all we have to do is wait for a warm day.

SPANISH CLASS NEWS

The Clases de Español completed an incredible 2016! We have embarked on such an array of activities it is difficult to express in just one article. All levels of Spanish study a song of the week to practice pronunciation and sentence structure. We have completed short readings, novleas, studies on various Spanish-speaking countries, and even learned some dancing! Spanish I classes have focused on basic introductions, greetings, adjectives, short stories, weather, seasons, La Vida Loca, and likes and dislikes. They are progressing rapidly and can carry on short conversations with ease.

Spanish I

studying weather

and seasons.

Spanish II classes began the year with a quick review, then we moved on to daily routine, fashion shows, and we even read a novel in Spanish called Piratas! We have completed vocabulary murals, acted out scenes, and they can communicate entirely in Spanish at this point in the year.

Here we

are

acting out a

scene! Spanish III classes have studied past tense, with a focus in camping, leyendas, and an in-depth study on the Camino de Santiago. We were also able to adorn Christmas Burritos Sabaneros while learning carols and singing. We are currently reading La Llorona and learning about the culture of Mexico!

Spanish IV has paralleled Spanish III in the review of past tense, with the addition of a study of El Salvador and the infamous Mara Salvatrucha. We are really enjoying reading this novel and learning about the factual accounts of the intertwining of historical and current events in both the US and El Salvador. All Spanish students have recently completed the first evaluation of their Spanish portfolios. These portfolios, along with individual interviews, are designed to evaluate a students’ proficiency level in Spanish, as determined by ACTFL, and are an accurate indicator of growth. This was the first year New Bremen students have been faced with this unique challenge in Spanish. Student feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, and I could not be more proud of their growth, hard work, and perseverance. It has truly been a remarkable year thus far. Student feedback on portfolios:

“A portfolio helped me remember everything we did this semester, not just memorize it for a test and forget it afterwards.” “The portfolio experience was different, but it helped me apply what I have learned.” “ The portfolio is a good method to show all our knowledge in Spanish class, especially when coming up with phrases on the fly makes you realize how much you do know.” “The portfolio really opened my eyes and made me realize just how much Spanish I know and how what I still need to learn.” “Spanish is uniquely different from other classes; it’s a different kind of learning, and the portfolio helps to show that.”

The annual District Honor Band is once again filled with several New Bremen high school musicians. This year, there were seven students accepted into the group after their audition in December 2016 and they included Lily Brautigam, Julia Wilker, Nick Wells, Grant Brautigam, Ian Frey, Michael Kelly, and Adrian Laughman. These students got the opportunity to participate in a high level musical ensemble that challenged and helped them grow and learn as musicians. They then participated in three 6-hour rehearsals under the direction of Mr. Bill Thomas, retired band director from Lakota Local Schools near Cincinnati, Ohio. Our New Bremen students were selected to perform along side some of the other talented musicians from various schools near our area, such as Marion, Coldwater, New Knoxville, Van Wert, St. Marys, and several others. The concert for this year’s Honor Band took place January 15, 2017.

NEW BREMEN ATHLETE RECEIVES NATIONAL RECOGNITION

New Bremen junior volleyball player, Paige Jones, has recently received national recognition from two national volleyball publications. Paige was selected as a Max Preps small school 1st team All American. Paige was the only Ohio player named to the first team as she set two new state records this past season; most kills in a single contest with 53 against Ft. Loramie and most kills in a season with 785. Her 8.8 kills per set led the nation for players who played in more than 50 sets. She also was named to Prep Volleyballs’ top 85 junior list. This list, as voted on by a panel of college coaches, consists of what is considered the top 85 junior college prospects in the country. Congratulations to Paige and to the New Bremen Volleyball Program!

SCHOOL DELAYS AND CANCELLATIONS

It is the policy of New Bremen School to delay classes or close school at any time when it is determined that the safety or the health of the students is in question. This includes severe fog, unsafe roads due to snow or ice, tornados, or a severe utility problem at the school. Announcements are made as early as possible. However, a dense fog, heavy snowfall, or tornado alert at the time of bus departure could cause a late announcement. A school delay may vary from one to three hours. School functions scheduled on the day of a closing are usually cancelled unless a change in the weather or the correction of a utility problem allows the activity to be held. Students and parents are requested not to call the school office or school officials for information concerning a delay or cancellation. The Superintendent and Transportation Coordinator are out checking the roads in the morning and we need to keep the phone lines free so we can notify media when road conditions are determined. The information will be posted on our school website, social media, posted on one of the following radio or television stations, and/or you will be notified by the school’s automated notification system. KINDERGARTEN CLINIC SCREENING The annual Kindergarten Screening will be held in the elementary library on Tuesday, March 28, and Wednesday, March 29. Children eligible for admission to kindergarten next fall are required to attend. Children must be five years of age on or before August 1, 2017, in order to be eligible. Children and parents attending the screening will be met by a number of people, all of whom are taking part in the Kindergarten Assessment Program. We remind everyone that parents and children will be spending at least 1 1/2 hours with us at the screening. If at all possible, it is best if younger and/or other children do not accompany the preschooler and his/her parents to the clinic. In order to provide an efficient screening, appointment times will be set up at intervals. Being on time is very important if we are to keep appointments running smoothly. Parents of children registered for kindergarten will receive a letter indicating their appointment date and time. Appointment letters will be mailed out sometime in February. Parents are reminded to bring their child's Birth Certificate, Social Security Card, Immunization Record, and Custody Papers (if applicable) when attending the screening. In accordance with state law, all children must have the following immunizations before entering school: DTP - 4 or more doses – one dose must be given after 4 years of age POLIO - 4 doses – one does must be given after 4 years of age MMR - 2 doses after 1 year of age and at least 28 days apart HEPATITIS B - 3 doses with 3rd dose after 24 weeks of age (Recommended for all 0-18 years olds) VARICELLA - 2 doses after 1 year of age, unless child has had disease (chicken pox), at least 28 days apart (but recommended to be 3 months after the first dose) Parking for the screening will be available on Plum Street. Please use the elementary entrance. Thank you for your cooperation.
