In persuasion of the International Yoga Day (June 21, 2017),
one preparatory yoga camp was organised for all the official of
NRCSS at agreed location i.e. Chandravardai Nagar, A-block
park. As most of the ICAR-NRCSS staff reside in city area
especially at and around Chandravardai Nagar and conducting a
professional training in the centre’s premises was difficult
because of its remote location and pre planned busy schedules of
the Yoga Trainers.

Research Highlights
A total volume of 1,19,000 tonnes of cumin valued at Rs.1963.20 crore was exported from India in
2016-17. The increase was largely due to the mandatory checks on cumin and its byproducts
implemented by the Spices Board in the backdrop of rapid alerts from importing countries. The ICAR-
NRCSS, Ajmer is also constantly advocating safe production of seed spices particularly cumin and
coriander through various means viz; educating the farmers for judicious use of pesticides, interaction
with the farmers to address disease management and post harvest handling issue with respect to the
clean and safe production of seed spices. The institute is propagating the safe production practices
through frontline demonstrations, on/off farm trails, participatory seed production and farmers training
in collaboration with line department agencies.
Spices export touches new heights(Dr. B.K. Mishra and Dr. A.K. Verma)
Indian spices and spice products surged to a record export worth of Rs.17664.61 crore ($ 2633.30
million) and a volume of 9,47,790 tonnes in 2016-17. It registered an increase of 12 per cent in
volume, nine per cent in rupee terms and six per cent in dollar terms from a year ago. In 2015-16
export was 8,43,255 tonnes valued at Rs.16238.23 crore ($ 2482.83 million). India has surpassed all
previous export records and has fulfilled the increasing international demand for its quality spices in
the face of tough competition in global markets. More satisfying is the fact that the appreciable
increase in exports came in the face of strict food safety regulations that now define and determine
the international commodity trade. Chilli continued to be the most demanded spice in 2016-17 with
export of 4,00,250 tonnes amounting to Rs 5,070.75 crores, registering an increase of 15 per cent in
volume and 27 per cent in value. Cumin was the second-most exported spice, recording an increase
of 22 per cent in volume and 28 per cent in value (http://economictimes.indiatimes.com.)

Research Highlights
A variety (AGCr-1 green) developed by NRCSS for leafy coriander during off-season was tested at
three locations (Nadi-II, Missinia and Dang village of Sardhana) in Ajmer district of Rajasthan. Total
six demonstrations were conducted from 2014-2017 during March to August month as mentioned
below.
Field demonstration at Dang, Sardhana, Ajmer:
Off season Coriander cultivation under shade net.
Off- season coriander for green leaves a boon to farmer’s prosperity(Dr. Ravindra Singh and Dr. Gopal Lal)
Prevalence of high temperature and bright sun shine during summer season (March to July) in
Rajasthan and other parts of northern India is a common phenomenon. Although, during this hot
season the demand for green leafy coriander is very high due to lower production and high demand.
Green coriander leaves are used as garnishing and flavoring agent in various cuisines prepared in rural
as well as urban areas of India. There are many social events and marriages in India during this pre-
monsoon period and farmers/growers in this season fetch high prices for this commodity. High
temperature and bright sun shine promotes early bolting (flowering) with stunted growth and pale
colour in leafy coriander cultivation in open conditions thus restricting open cultivation of coriander
leaves.
Efforts are made at ICAR-NRCSS, Ajmer to overcome the limitations of off-season cultivation of
coriander through varietal development programme and agronomical interventions. In this regard, a
field trail was conducted at NRCSS Ajmer from 2014-15 to 2016-17 for off-season production of
coriander during summer season under shade net covered walk in tunnels. Among the different color
tested green (75- 90% shading) and black (75 % shading) net were found more effective for off season
leafy coriander production than white and red shade nets during March-April, May-June and July-
August. 75 or 90% shading intensity of green shade net or 50% black shade nets were equally
effective for higher leafy biomass production during off season.

Research Highlights
Background
Shri Harkaran Paroda is a resident of Dang village , Saradhana, Ajmer. He is a progressive
farmer. He underwent training on off- season production of green leafy coriander under shade net
condition at ICAR-NRCSS, Ajmer. After that, he cultivated coriander variety AGCr-1 under shade net
during April- September, 2017, in an area of 100 meter square shade net covered walk in tunnel. Due
to prevalence of high temperature and bright sun shine during March to September in Rajasthan, Open
cultivation of coriander for leafy vegetable is not possible.
Interventions
Cultivation techniques of leafy coriander under shade net covered walk in tunnel.
Impact
Two crops were undertaken by the farmer during off-season. Total production of leafy coriander Ist
crop was 130 kg under 100 m2 and was sold in the market @ Rs 100 per kg amounting the total
revenue of Rs 13000, whereas the second crop was 105 kg and sold in the market @ Rs 85 per kg,
amounting to Rs 8925. The cost of cultivation including the working cost of the tunnel were Rs 6750,
hence the farmer received net profit of Rs. 15175 from 100 m2 area within 90 to 100 days during the
off season when the price of leafy coriander is very high.

Month of May and June is the peak of summer in Ajmer. The
crop cultivation activities having ceased after harvest and the
produce is being threshed cleaned and graded. All these activities
are mechanized at the centre in order to ensure clean and quality
production of seed spices. However, during this period off-season
protected cultivation of coriander leaves is very remunerative to
farmers .
