What a wonderful celebration of Easter and the Resurrection of our Lord we experienced together at New Bethesda! Palm Sunday began Holly Week with our choir sharing a beautiful Cantata, “He Has Overcome”, complete with a dramatic presentation of the last week of Jesus’ life. Well done! We had one of our largest attendance in years at our Maundy Thursday and Easter “Son-Rise” Services; as well as a full Sanctuary for our Easter Worship Service! Thank you to everyone who made each part of Easter, including a very popular Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday afternoon, such a huge success!

As we move into the month of May, I want to share with you two new areas of emphasis we are making at our church: First, PRAYER is such an important part of our calling as Christians. As a way to prioritize the need for prayer for our church, community, and nation, we have established a “Prayer Room” just inside the main entrance to our sanctuary. It is designed as a quiet space for individuals and small groups to come and spend time in personal prayer and reflection. This Thursday, May 2nd, is the National Day of Prayer. Our Sanctuary will be open from 8:00 AM – 8:00 PM, if you would like to come by for some personal time of prayer. Feel free to use the Prayer Room or the Sanctuary to pray on Thursday! “If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.” (2 Chronicles 7:14)

Second, there have been several requests to set up an area to welcome our guests and fellowship together on Sunday mornings. Our Deacons and their spouses have created a Coffee Bar and sitting area in our Ministry Center. Come check it out on your way to Sunday School this week!

Memorial Day ushers in the start of the Summer, and with it, are thoughts of vacations, time at the beach or the “Rivah” and many outdoor activities. As we move into the summer months, there will be several opportunities for you to invest in the ministries of our church as well. Plans continue for our Vacation Bible School and our youth mission trip to Bluefield in July. Please consider volunteering for leadership roles so we can impact more children and students for Christ this summer!

See You Sunday,

Happy Easter! Yes, it is May, but it is still the Easter season, all the way through June 9. The Church year is divided into seasons, similarly to our monthly calendar year, but based on the life, death and Resurrection of Jesus and His virtues as exhibited in the lives of the saints. So, the Easter Season continues all the way until we reach Pentecost, the Birthday of the Church, on June 9. Easter is a season, not a day. Easter is not the happy ending to the Lenten season; it is a happy BEGINNING to our new, joyous life in Christ! One of the hymns in our Baptist Hymnal is titled “Easter People, Raise Your Voices”. It reminds us: “Every day to us is Easter, With its resurrection song. Even when life overwhelms us, Easter people sing this song: Alleluia! Alleluia!” Easter people, sing this song! Let us continue to praise our Lord EXUBERANTLY throughout this season! In Christ’s love, Lynne

Our participation in the Great Day of Service was a success! Our youth group was paired up with students from Atlee Church, and we served at SonShine Folk School Farm in King and Queen County. SonShine Folk School Farm provides jobs to secondary school age youth and provides fresh vegetables to needy families in the greater Richmond area. Faith Night at the Richmond Flying Squirrels is May 18! We will leave from NBBC at 4:45pm. There will be Fireworks after the game! Cost is $5. Sign up by Sunday, May 12. All youth are invited to join us Sunday, May 12 for pancakes in the youth room at the start of Sunday school! We’ll enjoy a pancake breakfast before beginning our Sunday school lesson! It’s time to think about how we can maximize summer. How can we make the most of it? From a youth ministry perspective, I would like to offer two main things. First, let’s find ways to refresh ourselves. Not just by taking a nap or vacation, but letting ourselves be refreshed by God and his word. We hope this is what we’ll experience through our youth camps this summer. Second, let’s maintain our connection to each other. There’s no substitute for the encouragement that comes from being together as the body of Christ. Let’s seize our opportunities through our youth ministry to encourage each other. Blessings. Caleb
