New Beginnings "We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed." 2 Corinthians 4:8-9 As the end of the year fast approaches, we often reflect on what has happened in our lives during the year. Maybe it was a year of great blessings and significant breakthroughs. Maybe it was a year of deep disappointments and major changes in our lives. Maybe it was a year of sitting in neutral, spending time in God’s waiting room. Whatever kind of year it was, we can be grateful because it was a year spent with God. We can be hopeful because God has promised us new beginnings. We can rejoice because we have been given the indescribable gift of salvation. With God in our lives, every day is a new beginning. This is a new day for you, a new year, a new life, so wake up to God’s blessings. ~ Patricia Bankhead (Faith Writers, January 1, 2008) LIFE LINE Linglestown Life: A United Methodist Church January 1, 2009 Volume 18 Issue 1 L I N G L E S T O W N

Dear LLUMC,

Thank you all so much for your monetary gift that you gave to the relief fund after our house fire. We really appreciate your thoughtfulness. It meant so much to us to have your support.

Greetings from Gulfport, Mississippi. Thank you so much for your gift to the Harrisburg District Mission Trip. Dear Annie,

I received a care package from our church and am not sure who put it together or sent it, but I thought it might have something to do with you.

Thank you very much! God bless you and I'll see you all in a week or so.

DiscipleMakers

From November Newsletter New Missionaries What resource would you say is the limiting factor to the effectiveness of missions? Is there not enough money to support the church’s efforts? Are there not enough people willing to receive the gospel? Not at all! Actually, Jesus told us what is in short supply: laborers for the harvest. “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.” — Matthew 9:37-38 (ESV) The Lord has recently sent two more laborers to DiscipleMakers: George and Kamala King. They both bring valuable job and ministry experience with them as they join our mission to make disciples among college students. Carin and I are particularly excited about the Kings’ joining us because we have been given the privilege and responsibility of mentoring them through their ministry support raising process! This is our first substantial ministry assignment together, and we’re very much looking forward to seeing the new ways the Lord can use us now that we’re married. Praise and Prayer * Please pray for Carin and me as we mentor the Kings. We’ll be investing a lot of time and energy in helping them; this will be challenging for us. Pray that the Lord would use this opportunity to grow us in our capacity to give of ourselves to others. * Please pray for George and Kamala as they begin raising support for their ministry with DiscipleMakers. Pray that the Lord will show His power clearly to them as He works in their hearts and provides people to join their support team. * Please ask the Lord of the Harvest to send more laborers out into his harvest field. Please pray not

only that He would lead more missionaries to DiscipleMakers, but that he would motivate many throughout the church to give up their lives for the sake of God’s Kingdom. Thank you for your faithful support! You are a participant in the work of mobilizing college students as tomorrow’s missionaries. It is a privilege to serve with you.

From December Newsletter Dear friends, God announced the birth of His Son very dramatically. He sent a whole army of angels to help convey the message, which began with the words at the top of this page: “Glory to God in the highest.” This time of year we too often sing those words, sometimes in their Latin form: “Gloria in excelsis Deo.” But why do we sing it? What does it mean for us? One of the most astounding things about the truth we celebrate at Christmas is that God would care enough about us to come into this world as a man for our sake. In Jesus’ birth, God showed His involvement in the lives of His people in an unprecedented way: not only would He lead them, protect them, and provide for them, but He would walk among them in the flesh. This is how something that was not at all glorious on the surface could be the inspiration for the angels’ and our singing of God’s glory. For in Jesus’ birth, life, and death, we see that glory is not expressed through domineering power but through love. We are the recipients of that love which demonstrates God’s glory. That’s what we celebrate at Christmas, at Easter, and indeed every day of our lives. It is also the message we in DiscipleMakers share with college students. By your faithful prayers and financial support you help make it possible for young men and women to hear the good news of Jesus Christ. Thank you! Gloria in excelsis Deo! Wishing you peace and joy in Christ, Brian and Carin Roberg

Investment Sunday Commitment Report

On Sunday, November 23, 2008 we celebrated Investment Sunday. It was a day where we had an opportunity to invest in the future of Linglestown Life, to invest in the ministries provided by our church and sustained by your financial gifts. To date, 131 households have responded to God’s call to Christian stewardship by completing a Covenant Card and making a financial commitment for 2009. This represents an increase of 6 giving units or 1% more than last year. Total funds committed by all giving units completing a covenant card equal $346,254.36. This represents an increase of $41,064.36 or 14% higher than last year. Based on prior giving records, an additional $184,523.28 can be expected from persons who have established a giving pattern in the past, but who either were not present on Investment Sunday or did not submit a Covenant Card. This represents an increase of $13,227.03 or 8% higher than last year. Combined, a projected grand total of $530,777.64 can be anticipated as income for 2009. The projected grand total is $54,291.39 or approximately 11% higher than last year’s total. The projected income from all giving units for 2009 will be used as a basis for developing next year’s budget, in conjunction with income from investments and other sources. Thank you for your faithful support! Ron Estep Minister of Evangelism & Stewardship

What Goes Around Comes Around

One day a man saw an old lady, stranded on the side of the road. Even in the dim light of dusk, he could see she needed help. So he pulled up in front of her Mercedes and got out. His Pontiac was still sputtering when he approached her. Even with the smile on his face, she was worried. No one had stopped to help for the last hour or so. Was he going to hurt her? He didn't look safe; he looked poor and hungry He could see that she was frightened, standing out there in the cold. He knew how she felt. It was that chill which only fear can put in you. He said, 'I'm here to help you, ma'am. Why don't you wait in the car where it's warm? By the way, my name is Bryan Anderson.' Well, all she had was a flat tire, but for an old lady, that was bad enough. Bryan crawled under the car looking for a place to put the jack, skinning his knuckles a time or two. Soon he was able to change the tire. But he had to get dirty, and his hands hurt. As he was tightening up the lug nuts, she rolled down the window and began to talk to him. She told him that she was from St. Louis and was only just passing through. She couldn't thank him enough for coming to her aid. Bryan just smiled as he closed her trunk. The lady asked how much she owed him. Any amount would have been all right with her. She already imagined all the awful things that could have happened had he not stopped. Bryan never thought twice about being paid. This was not a job to him. This was helping someone in need, and God knows there were plenty who had given him a hand in the past. He had lived his whole life that way, and it never occurred to him to act any other way. He told her that if she really wanted to pay him back, the next time she saw someone who needed help, she could give that person the assistance they needed, and Bryan added, 'And think of me.' He waited until she started her car and drove off. It

had been a cold and depressing day, but he felt good as he headed for home, disappearing into the twilight. A few miles down the road, the lady saw a small cafe. She went in to grab a bite to eat and take the chill off before she made the last leg of her trip home. It was a dingy looking restaurant. Outside were two old gas p umps. The whole scene was unfamiliar to her. The waitress came over and brought a clean towel to wipe her wet hair. She had a sweet smile, one that even being on her feet for the whole day couldn't erase. The lady noticed the waitress was nearly eight months pregnant, but she never let the strain and aches change her attitude. The old lady wondered how someone who had so little could be so giving to a stranger. Then she remembered Bryan. After the lady finished her meal, she paid with a hundred dollar bill. The waitress quickly went to get change for her hundred dollar bill, but the old lady had slipped right out the door. She was gone by the time the waitress came back. The waitress wondered where the lady could be. Then she noticed something written on the napkin. There were tears in her eyes when she read what the lady wrote: 'You don't owe me anything. I have been there too. Somebody once helped me out, the way I'm helping you. If you really want to pay me back, here is what you do: Do not let this chain of love end with you.' Under the napkin were four more $100 bills. Well, there were tables to clear, sugar bowls to fill, and people to serve, but the waitress made it through another day. That night when she got home from work and climbed into bed, she was thinking about the money and what the lady had written. How could the lady have known how much she and her husband needed it? With the baby due next month, it was going to be hard.... She knew how worried her husband was. As he lay sleeping next to her, she gave him a soft kiss and whispered soft and low, 'Everything's going to be all right. I love you, Bryan Anderson.'

Living Passionately

A passionate God inspires a passionate Church to

create passionate Disciples!

You’ll want to memorize that line during the upcoming months at Linglestown Life! Beginning January 4 we’ll embark on a season of passion as together we discover how to reignite our passions by experiencing God’s passion. Passion is described as a powerful or compelling emotion or feeling. As a feeling it can come and go at any time; leaving us with moments of deep passion but more times than not missing out on a lasting experience. Passion is often seen as temporary, out of control, illicit or something that fails to produce lasting results. But passion should be something more! Passion should be the compelling force that drives my decisions, focuses my attention, energizes my action and motivates my behavior. Without passion we just live life as it comes and accept whatever may result. What is the key to boundless enthusiasm in our lives? What will keep the fire burning in our hearts, the zeal and fervor alive in every moment? For the answer to these questions and to discover a passion that is not fleeting, join us in worship this January! Together we’ll be inspired by God’s passion to be the church that is passionate and individually become more passionate disciples. January 4 A Passionate God January 11 A Passionate Church January 18 A Passionate Disciple January 25 Turning Passion into Action

Turning Passion Into Action January 24 9:00-11:00am

(snowdate: January 31 10:00am-12:00pm) Everyone has a passion! Your kids, the Eagles or the Steelers, Penn State, sewing, cooking, teaching, reading… Nearly anything you do with enthusiasm or from which you derive a great sense of joy and satisfaction can be described as a passion. How you express your passion and use it positively in your life and for the benefit of others is what we hope to discover at Turning Passion in Action on Saturday, January 24 from 9:00-11:00am at Linglestown Life. (Snow date: January 31 10am-12pm) Have you ever thought that your passion can help you fulfill the mission of Linglestown Life? This morning is designed to help you discover and identify your passion so that you can put it into action loving God and loving others. Now you can discern how God wired you, find others with the same or similar passions and explore how to turn your passion into action! Invite a friend and join us in this unique experience that will spark your creativity and turn your passion into opportunities for spiritual growth both individually and corporately through Linglestown Life.
