    Morning Workshops

    1. What is Reading? Join Dr. Jane Davis, Director of The ReaderOrganisation, to discuss the act of reading. What isreading? What happens inside us when we read?Why is it that reading aloud and shared reading is so

    powerful?

    2. Reading with Forensic Psychiatric PatientsDr. David Fearnley, Dr. Celia Bell and Dr. KathrynNaylor facilitate a number of Reading groups atAshworth Hospital, part of Mersey Care NHS Trust;a hospital which provides high secure services formen who have committed serious offences, and whohave complicated and severe mental health problems.

    Join them to find out how GIR groups work inforensic services (mental health or prison).

    3. Business and Funding Susan Blishen, manager of Right Here and the firstperson, whilst at the Paul Hamlyn Foundation, tofund Get Into Reading, joins Chris Catterall, BusinessManager of The Reader Organisation, to answer yourquestions about funding sources and applicationwriting for GIR projects.

    4. Reading with Young PeopleIn this workshop, three of our current young personGIR project workers discuss the best way toapproach this type of reading. Join Patrick Fisher,Sophie Povey and Samantha Shipman to find out themost effective ways to engage young people in GIRgroups, and the best books/poems to read with avariety of age groups.

    5. Commissioning Get Into Reading: NHS Wirral Kathy Doran, Chief Executive of NHS Wirral, Dr.Shyamal Mukherjee, and Kate McDonnell, ProjectManager for The Reader Organisation, discuss thereasons why Wirral PCT commissioned the Get IntoReading project.

    Afternoon Workshops

    1. Research: The MerseyBEAT ProjectDr. Josie Billington, Prof. Chris Dowrick, Dr. AndrewHamer, Dr. Jude Robinson and Dr. Clare Williamstalk about their current study into the benefits of Get into Reading in relation to depression. The

    research project is funded by MerseyBEAT, acollaboration of University of Liverpool andLiverpool Primary Care Trust, providing leadership inapplied health research in chronic illness.

    2. Get Into Reading in Libraries The role of the Get Into Reading project in publiclibraries: how it fits with the social and learning

    outcomes target, and with the new CILIP guidelinesfor public libraries. Jane Mathieson (Regional ReaderDevelopment Co-ordinator NW), will chair a

    discussion with library staff already leading successfulGet Into Reading activity.

    3. Get Into Reading in Mersey Care NHS TrustAlan Yates, Chief Executive and Lindsey Dyer,Director, Service Users and Carers discuss: If youwant to know what lies behind the flat screen youhave to read a book . Find out: why Mersey Carewas the first mental health Trust to Get IntoReading; how the Reader-in-Residence projectworks; what a huge difference GIR has made; andwhat the Chief Executive is currently reading withpeople who like books and use mental healthservices .

    4. Read to Live : A Community Hub for GIR,Monmouth Comprehensive School

    Jane Davis joins Carole Herman, Head Teacher of Monmouth Comprehensive School, for a discussionof the proposed Read to Live project. Carolediscusses why developing a culture of shared readingis so important in secondary schools, and how weare able to take the project one step further:inspiring pupils to lead their own groups in the widercommunity.

    5. GIR with People with Dementia James Freeley, GIR facilitator in Durham, joins TheReader Organisation s Katie Clark for a discussion of how to approach reading with those who aresuffering from Dementia. This will cover the specialconsiderations that go into planning and deliveringGIR in this setting, including choice of material,length of session, structure and working alongsidestaff and carers.
