the provision of attractive dwellings in europe’s population centers has long been a topic of central concern not only to architects but also to city planners, investors, and municipalities. Redensification and the creation of new residential developments are always accompanied by the question of sustainable approaches. in alpine areas, such efforts must contend with topographical and structural framework conditions that raise the bar even higher.

«Living in the alps» presents intelligent ideas and approaches from selected residential developments and construction projects from europe’s eight alpine countries; it examines not just dwelling itself but also the integration of various functions. new photo essays produced especially for the volume show how the structures in question are actually used. the publication offers planners, architects, cities, and towns encouragement and ideas for pursuing approaches to residential development and housing construction.

«Wohn raum alpen - Living in the alps» is published to coincide with the exhibition of the same name in Kunsthaus Meran (Merano), May 15th to september 12th 2010.

The work of the Ticino architects first captured international attention in 1975 on the occasion of the Zurich exhibition tendenzen – neuere architektur im tessin (tendencies and trends – new architecture in ticino) and it did so virtually overnight. the leading figures of the “Ticino School” became aware of the destruction being wrought upon the natural landscape by the unbridled construction boom as early as the 1960s. aurelio galfetti, Luigi snozzi, and Livio Vacchini – soon joined by Mario Botta and

ivano gianola – set a striking example with hard concrete structures. While they could only aestheticize overdevelopment, not slow it down, their highly varied production established a widely noted brand of architectural regionalism whose impact is still being felt today.this volume brings together the works of the ticino school. With the publication of this reprint, this unique historical document, which has a permanent place in the teaching of design, is once again available.

A visual feast for bibliophiles

sumptuous documentation of the making of a limited edition

synthesis of traditional artisan production and modern fashion design

Medieval market scenes, Batman, Minnie Mouse, dior’s studio, david Bowie, and Buster Keaton – this book functions like a film, blending historical figures with pop art, the production of the finest porcelain figures with sensuous haute couture. But what is truly exceptional about this publication is more than the extraordinary objects it presents: the sixteen porcelain figures of the Commedia dell’arte created by Franz anton Bustelli in 1760, which were newly released in a limited edition by the nymphenburg porcelain Manufactory in 2009, redressed by sixteen internationally renowned fashion designers, including Vivienne Westwood, christian Lacroix, naoki takizawa, gareth pugh, Victor & rolf, and others.

this lavish volume documents – regardless of costs – the “making of” this limited edition and the experimental process of updating objects like these for the world of today. the photographs taken and selected by the volume’s editor, Florian Böhm, depict scenes from the fashion designers’ studios and detail views of the manufactory. the effect is to bring to light the similarities between the handicrafts-based working methods of fashion design and porcelain design, similarities that are so characteristic of the contemporary trend of creating limited-edition syntheses of traditional arts and crafts and modern design.

A related exhibition will take place at the Bayerisches nationalmuseum in Munich on 17.6.–31.10.2010.

schmidhuber+partner was founded in Munich by interior designers prof. Klaus and susanne schmidhuber in 1984. For 25 years, the agency has been successfully pursuing its objective to design brand messages and corporate visions. today, some 50 architects, interior designers and designers work there for international clients from the fields trade fairs, trade and public space, office design, restaurants and hotels. in the years 2008/2009 alone, the agency was awarded prizes by adc, clio, if, adaM+eVa and red dot as well as receiving three nominations for the design prize of the Federal republic of germany.

the book presents around 40 international products from the last two years classified in four chapters: architecture, trade fairs and exhibitions, events, shops and showrooms. Large-scale projects like the german pavilion at the expo shanghai 2010 or trade fair appearances of audi at the iaa 2009 and of samsung at the iFa 2009 are, of course, showcased.
