They say that your school days are the best years of your life. But that certainly wasn’t always the case with me.
When I was 11, I was awarded a scholarship to a private boarding school near my home. It was a very traditional, all-
girl school, and it had an ecellent reputation. !y parents were very proud of me, but I didn’t li"e it at all. #ven though
it was a boarding school, because we lived so close, I went home every day, and so I didn’t really ma"e any friends
there. !ost of the girls came from really wealthy, privileged bac"grounds, and I thin" they loo"ed down on me, as I
was $ust an ordinary, albeit clever, local girl. They all "new that I was there on a scholarship and that my parents
couldn’t afford the tuition. %lso, the teachers were really strict, and I was scared stiff of most of them& %lthough I was
doing well academically, I was deeply unhappy the whole time I was there.
#ventually, after two years, I persuaded my parents to move me to the local public school. They were really against it
at first. They had always wanted me to go to medical school and be a doctor, li"e my dad and my grandfather before
him. They didn’t epect me to do well in the public school, which, unli"e the private girls’ school, was full of students of
all different abilities, and didn’t have the money, resources, or reputation of my boarding school. But I was desperate

to go there. I "new lots of my neighbors and old friends from elementary school who were there. I was sure I would be
happy there, and I was determined to wor" hard and do well in order to prove my parents wrong.
%nd I did& I had a great time at my new school, with lots of friends. I can honestly say that I thin" I learned more about
life than I would have done if I’d stayed in my first school. When I graduated, I got accepted to a good college to study
history. I decided that I’m not going to be a doctor, after all. I am going to brea" the family tradition and do my own
thing. I’m going to be a history teacher. I thin" my dad was a little disappointed, but my mom was thrilled, as she’s
from a family of teachers. !y own eperiences have made me determined not to be li"e the teachers I had at my first
school. I’m going to be much less strict, for one thing.
By this time net year, I’ll be loo"ing for my first $ob. I really hope I’ll be teaching in a public high school, $ust li"e the
one I went to.
