Declarer can draw trumps and knock out the ♠K for 12 tricks. All he has to worry about is the location of the ♦Q.

At the table, declarer played a diamond from dummy to the ace, followed by the J♦ and the queen obligingly popped up on his left. Con-tract made.

Why did declarer fi nesse through West? Dur-ing the auction, East had considered their bid before passing 1♠ and had subsequently dou-bled the cue-bid of 4♥. Had declarer been left to his own devices, he may well have played a diamond to the king and then take the diamond fi nesse towards the ♦A J 10. This feels some-how more natural and also guards against a 4-1 break. However, South reasoned that as East had doubled the heart cue-bid, they would have more hearts than West. Therefore West may well have more diamonds than East. I am sure many will have failed to locate the queen on this hand.

East returned a small heart which his part-ner won with the queen. East then returned the ♦K (bizarrely–but it made more sense when later he tried to trump the third diamond). Declarer now played the ♠Q and ♠J , both ducked and cashed the ♥A before running his three diamond winners. West threw a spade and two clubs. East discarded a heart and then a club, keeping an entry to his partner’s ♠A. Dummy threw a club.

The distribution is likely to be 4-3 in both black suits which after the discards, leaves the clubs split 2-2. Taking the losing club fi nesse could cost two tricks. So, declarer duly played a club to the ace in dummy and a club back to his hand, felling East’s queen and clocked up 11 tricks for a good board.

Generally speaking, if declarer has no clues from the bidding or play, which way to take the two-way fi nesse is always a bit of a conundrum. There are several theories:

You fi nesse against the opponent you least like the look of.

This is my personal theory - if you are right-handed you fi nesse towards dummy and if you are left handed you fi nesse towards declarer.

An un-named failed statistician from the bul-letin room claims if there is nothing else to go on assume the person on lead has ithe queen

    The Waiting Game Mark Horton

If you are familiar with the works of Shakespeare, you may recall a line from the Scottish play (it’s considered bad luck to say Macbeth, and the way the lifts are working I’m not going to tempt fate) where Lady Macbeth says ‘Stand not upon the order of your going, but go at once’. Which basically means that you don’t need to wait for someone to give you an order before you do something.

English star Justin Hackett, here in Madeira with his wife Barbara (adding two more names to the list of World Champions who have played in the Madeira Festival) told me about this amuse bouche from the fi rst weekend of England’s Premier League. (That’s the bridge version, not followed by quite so many spectators as the one where 22 grown men kick around something resembling an infl ated pigs bladder).

Tosh hails from North of the border and is no doubt famil-iar with the Scottish play, but as another famous Scotsman once wrote, ‘the best laid schemes often go awry’ when West saw no point in doing any-thing other than passing!

As a consolation, Tosh can now add his name to the list of players who have passed holding a massive spade suit, two of the most famous being John Collings and Brian Senior, who both passed holding a solid ten-card suit, only to dis-cover when the other three players passed that their partner’s had seen fi t to pass holding just the three missing aces.

The play’s the thing wherein I’ll catch the con-science of the king.

Defend This Hand With Me Mark Horton

Over the years, I have developed a penchant for writing in the style of Terence Reese. One of his specialities was to use an ‘over my shoulder’ style for the presentation of declarer play problems. If he had extended this to defensive play this deal from the fi rst round of the Open Pairs where one of the defenders found a brilliant way to defl ect declarer would surely have been included:

The IllusionistPlaying in one of the best Festivals in the world on the sun-drenched island of Madeira I pickup this modest collection during the fi rst session of the Open Pairs:

S ♣ 7 5Declarer wins with dummy’s ace and plays the ♠7. When my partner follows with the ♠8 she plays the ♠J. Declarer would only play like this with a doubleton jack and looking at my spot cards in the suit it is clear that winning with the king will leave declarer with three tricks in spades, so hoping to create an illusion I follow in tempo

with the ♠4. Declarer crosses to hand with the ♥A and continues with the ♠A followed by the seven. My partner, who has contributed the ♠10 and ♥5 now matches that with the ♥7. Declarer overruffs with the ♥K and goes through the motions, but cannot arrive at more than nine tricks.

    This was the full deal:

There were ways in which declarer might have prevailed; one is to draw trumps after the sec-ond round of spades. Declarer then plays a third spade expecting the king to appear from South but when South discards, she can pitch a dia-mond when the defenders take only three tricks.

This brilliant defence netted EW 175/11.

Predictions - Four For The Price of Three Mark Horton

There’s a mildly optimistic auction to the heart game.

Your task is to take eleven tricks on the lead of the ♦10.

I predict only a handful will take eleven tricks.

That’s one of many possible auctions to 3NT.I picked this deal because it illustrates per-

fectly that Deep Finesse plays double dummy. It says that you can take ten tricks in 3NT, but how are you going to manage that if North leads a club?

If you want to know the answer, come to this morning’s seminar at 10.30!

I’m going all in by suggesting that unless North leads a diamond, no-one will make ten tricks!

Were East to be on lead against 3NT you might decide to try a club - risky but not ridiculous. I would go for the ♣5/4, because every time I lead the queen from this type of combination dummy comes down with A/K10x and declarer has the other honour so you lose three tricks. If you lead a low card declarer might not put in the ten, especially holding ♣H8x. Here the low club lead gives the defenders four tricks.

I won’t be surprised to fi nd that no-one holds declarer to nine tricks.

How did declarer fi nd his remarkable play in the trump suit?

With West marked with the ♠AK and ♦J East needed all the missing points to get up to 12.

The PredictoMeterAfter penning yesterday’s article as to how suc-cessful Mark’s fortune telling was, I mentioned our new game of lift prediction. Immediately it had gone to print, signs appeared in front of the lift ‘Maintenance Works’. I can now reveal that a new possibility has occurred and it is my cur-rent ‘Nap’ selection (see Laura’s article from last year for defi nition) is the ‘Double Full House’, this is where the lift rises to the top fl oor whilst the indicator panels fl ash random numbers and it then immediately sinks down to the bottom of the hotel and makes various grunting noises before soaring back to the top and then pains-takingly opening its doors to let you out and recover from a bout of extreme claustrophobia. I am inclined to say that the sign ‘Maintenance Works’ was not a correct statement. Hopefully Mark’s predictions for the fi rst round of the Open Pairs is more accurate.

On Board 4 Mark predicted that over 50% would reach 6♠, a few try 6NT and at least one pair would overstretch into 7♠.

Of the pairs who bid 6♠, six of them failed, which with the trumps splitting 2-2 seems to be careless. Overall a very accurate prediction.

You can download FUNBRIDGE for free at: www.funbridge.com and follow the instructions there to play or simply to try it for free.

Missing a 4-4 Fit Marcel Winkel

On board 12 of the fi rst round of the Open Pairs I was sitting South.

The bidding was short. West North East South Germann Winkel  1♣  Pass  1♥  1♠ All PassWest led a small spade and East put up the jack.

I won with the king and it was obvious that E/W had missed their 4-4 spade fi t.

At trick two I tried leading the queen of spades, but West took his ace and helped me out a bit by playing a third round.

I took the ten of spades and advanced a small club, concealing my ace from the opponents. West took his king of clubs and laid down a con-fi dent queen of diamonds on the table, so that it made it absolutely plain to his poor partner that he had the jack of diamonds as well.

I took the king in the South hand and now played a fourth round of trumps, East winning with his nine. Since the clubs were not high yet the entry in diamonds must be removed straight away, so East can hardly be blamed for continu-ing with a diamond.

I thankfully took the trick with the jack, unblocked the ace of clubs and crossed to dummy with my third diamond to enjoy the rest of the clubs. Ten tricks in spades for N/S meant a 96.73% score...
