2015 NEVADA WOLF PACK FOOTBALL — GAME NOTES

THE POLIAN FILEHEAD COACH BRIAN POLIAN (@BrianPolian)As Brian Polian enters his third season as the head coach of the Nevada football team, the production of his tenure in Reno continues to emerge.

The spring semester in 2015 produced the first team av-erage of a B or better in the classroom in program histo-ry. The Wolf Pack combined

for a stellar 3.05 GPA. Nevada football’s APR score – a metric used by the NCAA to chart academic success and promote higher graduation rates – is on the rise with a single-year 958 in the most re-cent report and projected scores expected to rise into the 970s (1,000 is a perfect score).

Every member of the 2014 senior class has already graduated, or will this year. That from a team that challenged from the West Division title in the Mountain West and went to the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl – the ninth bowl game in the last 10 years for the Wolf Pack program.

In 2015, Polian’s Wolf Pack returns just 13 seniors but has a large junior class emerging and another heralded recruiting class contributing depth to the program. As the new culture of Wolf Pack football continues to grow, Nevada looks to again compete for a Mountain West crown.

The Polian era of Nevada football was ushered in on Jan. 11, 2013 with the hiring of Brian Polian to serve as the 25th head coach in the history of the Wolf Pack program.

At 40 years old and in his third season as a head coach, Polian is still one of the youngest head coaches at the FBS level. He brought to Nevada an impressive football pedigree that includes coach-

ing stops at Notre Dame, Stanford and Texas A&M as part of a 18-year coaching career.A treacherous schedule in 2013 led to a 4-8 record in Polian’s first year with five Wolf Pack players earning All-Mountain West honors with Joel Bi-tonio and Brock Hekking named to the first team and Brandon Wimberly, Charles Garrett and Chase Tenpenny earning second-team recognition.

Eight members of Polian’s program earned dis-tinction for the their work in the classroom with Academic All-MW accolades. And four players earned the Mountain West Scholar-Athlete Award for earning a grade-point average of 3.5 or higher during the 2013-14 academic year.

The tide turned from year one to year two as Po-lian’s program reached new heights on and off the field in 2014. The success on the field was evident with a seven-win season that included a win over Pac-12 foe Washington State at Mackay Stadium. Nevada also scored impressive road wins at BYU, Hawaii and San Jose State and capped the regular season with a dominating win at UNLV, returning the Fremont Cannon to its home in Cashell Field-house.

In Polian’s first two seasons, Nevada also had two players, Joel Bitonio and Nigel Haikins, inducted into the National Football Foundation’s Hamp-shire Society, which honors significant achieve-ment on the field and in the classroom.

Nevada has also sent nearly 10 players onto NFL rosters or into training camps over the past two seasons under Polian, highlighted by Bitonio’s second-round selection and dominating rookie season, with the Cleveland Browns.

MACKAY STADIUM RENOVATION PROJECTThe Nevada athletics department is finalizing plans for the upcoming $11.5 million renovation of Mackay Stadium.

The project, which was approved by the state’s Board of Regents in December, began this spring with the construction of two-story, 2,800-square foot restroom facility that is expected to be done in time for the Sept. 3 season opener against UC Davis. The bulk of the sta-dium renovation will begin after this season and will be completed prior to the 2016 season.

The renovation will feature the construction of an 8,000-square foot stadium club on the west side and the installation of loge boxes, club seats and chairback seating on the east and west sides of the stadium. The plans also call for new ADA accessible seating areas and the wid-ening of aisles with the installation of handrails to increase safety and fan experience at the stadium.

With all of the improvements, a re-seating process will be necessary as seating configurations in seven sections will be affected and capacity will be reduced. While the re-seating will not go into effect until the 2016 season, the process is set to commence in August. The athletics department has produced a 24-page guide and will launch a website dedicated to the project.

In terms of seating, the project includes 38 new four-seat loge boxes, 238 club seats and 3,880 chairback seats. A new elevator will be in-stalled on the west side of the stadium as part of the stadium club project.

The project has been in the planning stages for more than three years as athletics department officials have worked directly with fan focus groups and analyzed data collected in fan surveys. The additional amenities will create new price points for the stadium. Nevada will remain one of the top values in the Mountain West Conference as its most expensive seat will remain in the bottom half of a comparison of the 12-team league.

Project Features for 2015• A two-story, 2.800-square foot restroom facility is being built in the southwest cor-ner of the stadium and will be available for the 2015 season.

Project Features for 2016• 4,156 total new seats will be added to the stadium, while 7,513 bleacher seats will be removed.• 3,880 chairback seats will be added; 2,860 to the west side; 1,020 to the east side.

• An 8,000 square-foot Stadium Club will be added and will serve as the focal point of hospitality at Mackay. The members-onl, full-service hosting area will include a full-service bar and kitchen• 38 brand new loge boxes will be added to Mackay Stadium.• Aisles will be widened and handrails will be installed. • 12 east side boxes will be converted to in-door/outdoor seating.

2015 NEVADA WOLF PACK FOOTBALL — POSITION PREVIEWS

QUARTERBACKKEY LOSSES: Cody Fajardo: 239-405, 2,498 passing yds., 18 passing TDs, 1,046 rushing yards, 13 rushing TDsKEY RETURNERS: Junior Tyler Stewart, red-shirt-freshman Hunter Fralick, sophomore Danté MayesOUTLOOK: Cody Fajardo graduated ranking second in program history with 13,141 yards of total offense, leaving a big hole for Nevada to replace. The Wolf Pack hopes it found the answer to replacing Fajardo in junior Tyler Stewart, who was No. 2 on the depth chart all last season. Stewart didn’t attempt a pass last year, but he went 21-of-37 for 251 yards and three scores in his lone career start - a 2013 victory over Hawai’i. RS-Freshman Hunter Fralick - a local product - shows promise and is listed No. 2 on the depth chart.

RUNNING BACKKEY LOSSES: noneKEY RETURNERS: Senior Don Jackson: 216 att., 957 yds., 7 TDs; sophomore James Butler: 140 att., 635 yds., 5 TDs.OUTLOOK: The Wolf Pack could have a pair of 1,000-yard rushers this season and one of the top 1-2 punches at running back in the Mountain West. Jackson came just 43 yards short of the 1,000-yard barrier last season. He was named to the Doak Walker Award pre-season watch list this year. After a splendid freshman campaign, James Butler appears prone for increased carries and yards as he continues to develop. Redshirt-freshman Blake Wright is Nevada’s No. 3 back, and he may see playing time this season.

WIDE RECEIVERSKEY LOSSES: Richy Turner: 63 rec., 587 yds., 4 TDsKEY RETURNERS: Junior Jerico Richardson: 56 rec., 655 yds., 3 TDs; Junior Hasaan Hen-derson: 45 rec., 579 yds., 4 TDsOUTLOOK: The Wolf Pack will be well-off at wide receiver with Richardson and Hen-derson returning for their junior seasons as potential honors candidates. Junior Brayden Sanchez will have in increased role this year after only catching two passes last year. Wy-att Demps saw playing time as a true fresh-man last season and will also have an in-creased role as well. This position could see a true freshman earn playing time as well.

Seau and Yates each return 10.5 TFL while Jones boasts 20 career starts, and all three have strong chances at postseason awards. Nevada’s second-string defensive line has plenty of talent as well.

LINEBACKERSKEY LOSSES: Jonathon McNeal: 98 tckls., 5.5 TFL, 3 FR.KEY RETURNERS: Senior Jordan Dobrich: 85 tckls.; senior Matthew Lyons: 80 tckls.; senior Bryan Lane Jr.: 70 tckls.; senior Fie Faaituala: 10 tckls.OUTLOOK: Nevada returns a combined 60 career starts at linebacker, its most experi-enced position. Nevada returns a combined eight career starts at this position. Johnson and redshirt-freshman Asuani Rufus are slated to start at safety, while junior Elijah Mitchell and red-shirt-freshman Ahki Muhammad will start at corner. Nevada will look to improve upon 2,678 pass yards allowed per game last year, which ranked last in the MW.

2015 NEVADA WOLF PACK FOOTBALL — GAME NOTES

NOTABLE STATISTICS FROM 2014For a strong season in 2015 and a trip to another bowl game, Nevada will be looking to carry forward some key statistics from last year that resulted in a 7-win campaign and a trip to the New Orleans Bowl. • Fourth Quarter Scoring: The Wolf Pack posted a +79 fourth quarter scoring margin last season, which ranked second in the nation behind only East Carolina’s +91 fourth quarter scor-ing margin. Nevada outscored opponents in 9-of-13 games last season and came up clutch late in contests. • Red Zone Offense: Nevada scored in 92.5 percent of red zone drives last season, which ranked first in the Mountain West and sixth in the nation. The Pack reached the end zone 53 times, scoring in 49 of those trips. Nevada scored touchdowns in 68 percent of those red zone drives, which also ranked in the top 25 nationally. • Points Off Turnovers: Nevada’s offense typically responded with points in 2014 when gifted with a takeaway from its defensive counterpart. The Pack scored 159 points off turnovers last season, which ranked second in the nation. • Turnover Margin: The Wolf Pack posted a +0.85 average turnover margin per game, which led the Mountain West and ranked 11th in the nation. Nevada’s offense only turned the ball over 16 times, while the defense posted 27 takeaways.

WOLF PACK RETURNS FREMONT CANNON TO RENOOne of the key objectives in Nevada’s 2014 season was defeating UNLV in a Governor’s Series battle and returning the Fremont Cannon to Reno. The cannon now resides in the Cashell Foot-ball Center, as the Wolf Pack accomplished that objective last season. The Wolf Pack beat its ri-vals to the south 49-27 in the season finale last year in Las Vegas. Nevada scored 28 unanswered points in the second half and run for 408 yards - the highest rushing output of the Polian era.

A TRADITION OF HARD-NOSE RUNNINGThe Pistol offense at Nevada has cultivated a tradition of strong rushing attacks, as the Wolf Pack has averaged at least 200 yards rushing in seven of the past nine seasons. Nevada aver-aged 205.5 yards on the ground last season. With the 1-2 punch of Don Jackson and James Butler returning, the Wolf Pack will look to continue its proud rushing tradition in 2015.

WINNING SEASONSNevada has posted winning seasons in five out of its past six campaigns.

NEVADA “KEEPS CHOPPING” Head coach Brian Polian’s “keep chopping” mantra became part of the Wolf Pack identity last season. Nevada outscored its opponents in the fourth quarter in 9-of-13 contests and ranked second nationally in fourth quarter scoring margin. Nevada scored 20 unanswered points in the second half in four games this season while winning four times after trailing at halftime. The Pack’s fourth quarter exploits are listed below;

• Nevada trailed San Diego State 14-10 in the second quarter before pitching a shutout in the second half and scoring 20 unanswered points to win, 30-14. Nevada’s final three drives re-sulted in 17 points.• Hawai’i opened a 10-0 lead in the second quarter before Nevada scored 26 unanswered points behind three touchdowns and two field goals. All four of Nevada’s second-half drives went at least 10 plays and resulted in points as the Pack won, 26-18.• The Pack trailed 28-13 at BYU in the third quarter before scoring 29-unanswered points in a span of 18 minutes. Nevada recovered three fumbles, two of which led to touchdowns, while the third allowed the Pack to run out the clock in a 42-35 win.• Nevada trailed 31-3, its largest deficit of the season, to Colorado State with 4:48 left in the third quarter. The Pack scored 21 points in the fourth quarter to pull within 31-24. The Pack had a game-tying 63-yard touchdown pass called back by a penalty, and drove 64 yards to the CSU 10-yard line before an interception in the red zone with 46 seconds left on the clock.• The Pack trailed by a 51-36 margin to Boise State and scored 10 straight points in the fourth quarter to pull within 51-46 before a turnover on downs with 41 seconds left at the 37-yard line.• Nevada trailed 35-21 to Arizona before pulling to 35-28 and having a drive stall on fourth down at the 46-yard line with 41 seconds left.

Nevada is 4-6 all-time in its FBS history when it comes to overtime games. The school’s history in overtime games includes being part of the first-ever overtime game in FBS (I-A) history – the 1995 Las Vegas Bowl.

RENO, Nev. (AP) - Nevada’s defense held Washington State scoreless three times in the red zone, limiting the nation’s second-ranked passing offense in a key victory at a whiteout Mackay Stadium. The Wolf Pack won, 24-13, on ESPN to improve to 2-0 for the first time in three years.

Freshman Kendall Johnson intercepted a pass in the first quarter, returning it 45 yards to set up Nevada’s first score of the game. Nevada scored in the first half on short runs by Don Jackson and James Butler before Mike Leach’s Cougars scored 10 unanswered points to make it 14-10 at halftime.

The Wolf Pack defense turned in one of its best performances in recent memory, holding the air-raid Cougar offense to just three

points in the second half. Meanwhile, Nevada added insurance with another Jackson TD run and a 40-yard field goal by Brent Zuzo to cap a late, clock-killing drive.

Senior QB Cody Fajardo tallied 110 passing yards and 100 rushing yards to lead the way, becoming the third player in program history to reach 10,000 yards of total offense. Jackson added 69 yards and two scores on the ground, while Hasaan Henderson casught six passes for 77 yards.

The Pack defense held WSU to 5-of-15 on third-down, 0-of-2 on fourth-down and 3-of-6 in the red zone. While being outgained, Nevada went a perfect 4-of-4 in the redzone to overcome Washington State.

RENO, Nev. (AP) - Despite a masterful performance from senior Cody Fajardo and the Nevada offense, Arizona held on for a 35-28 victory on Saturday, Sept. 13 in Arizona Stadium.

Fajardo completed 29-of-39 passes for 321 yards and three scores, leading Nevada on five drives that went 70 yards or longer. Nevada’s opening drive went 19 plays and lasted over nine minutes - the longest Pack drive since 2010 - as the visitors jumped out to a 3-0 lead.

Meanwhile, Anu Solomon and Rich Rodriguez’s offense were equally impressive, scoring in quick drives to take a pair of two-touchdown leads.

First, tight end Jarred Gipson caught his first career touchdown pass with eight seconds left in the second quarter to pull within one. Hasaan Henderson tied the game at 21-21 with a brilliant catch in the corner of the end zone, capping a 16-play drive.

Arizona responded with consecutive, quick-stike scores from Cayleb Jones TD receptions. With the pressure on, Fajardo found Gipson again at the 6:01 mark in the fourth quarter to pull within one. A late Wolf Pack drive stalled on fourth down, and the Wildcats survived to improve to 3-0.

For his efforts, Fajardo was named MW Offensive Player of the Week. Fajardo completed 29-of-39 passes for 321 yards and three TDs. Gipson caught eight passes for 49 yards and two scores.

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) - Cody Fajardo’s second rushing touchdown, a two-yard run to start the fourth quarter, lifted Nevada to a 21-10 victory over San Jose State in the Mountain West opener for both schools on Saturday, Sept. 27.

Fajardo scored on a 14-yard run in the third minute of the second quarter to give the Wolf Pack (3-1, 1-0) a 7-0 lead, but San Jose State (1-3, 0-1) came back with a 32-yard field goal by Austin Lopez with no time left in the first half and Tim Crawley added a 24-yard run for a touchdown to start the second half as the Spartans built a 10-7 lead to start the final period.

Nevada erased the deficit 2:13 into the fourth quarter as Fajardo scored from the two for a 14-10 lead. Three minutes later Nigel

Haikins picked off a Joe Gray pass and returned it 27 yards for a touchdown. The Wolf Pack defense forced three takeaways tonight, improving its turnover margin to +6 on the season. Matthew Lyons led the Pack defense with a season-high 11 tackles.

RENO, Nev. (AP) - Jay Ajayi had 116 of his 152 rushing yards in the second half and Boise State withstood a Nevada comeback for a 51-46 victory on Saturday, Oct. 4. Ajayi added touchdown runs of one, 26 and two yards in the second half for the Broncos, (4-2, 2-1 Mountain West).

Boise State intercepted Cody Fajardo four times, each leading to touchdowns, but turned the ball over three times itself.

Fajardo passed for 306 yards and three touchdowns, but was intercepted three times in the firsts half, including a pick six by Tyler Gray, which gave the Broncos the lead 23-21.

On the ensuing drive, Donte Deayon intercepted a Fajardo pass and the Broncos expanded their lead to 30-21 three plays later with

Grant Hedrick taking it in from two yards out. Hedrick finished with 26 of 31 for 346 yards and two touchdowns.

Fajardo finished 23-of-43 for 306 yards and three touchdowns. He also rushed for two touchdowns, and rallied the Wolf Pack (3-2, 1-1 Mountain West) from 18 points down in the second half.

Nevada again pulled to within a touchdown when Ian Seau batted a Hedrick pass into the air, caught it and returned it 32 yards for a score to make it 44-36 with 14:18 left in the game.

Nevada cut it to 51-43 on a 12-yard strike from Fajardo to Jarred Gipson and made it 51-46 on a 45-yard field goal by Brett Zuzo.

RENO, Nev. (AP) - Nevada scored 21-unanswered points in the second half behind Cody Fajardo’s three touchdowns, but the Wolf Pack’s rally fell short 31-24 to Colorado State on Saturday, Oct. 11, at Mackay Stadium.

The Rams (5-1, 1-1) built a 31-3 lead with 4:48 remaining in the third quarter before the Wolf Pack (3-3, 1-2) awakened with a massive rally. Fajardo tallied Nevada’s first touchdown with a 13-yard rush in the third quarter, before tossing touchdown passes to Hasaan Henderson and Richy Turner in the fourth quarter.

After forcing a Colorado State punt with 4:56 remaining, Nevada took over at its 26-yard line needing one score to tie the game. It appeared Nevada did just that as Fajardo found Richardson for a 63-yard touchdown reception, but the play was called back on

offensive pass interference. Nevada still managed to drive 64 yards and reach the Ram’s 10-yard line before Fajardo was picked off in the end zone, sealing a dramatic Colorado State win.

Garret Grayson completed 26-of-36 passes for 326 yards to lead the Rams, while Rashar Higgins caught 10 passes for 194 yards.

Fajardo accounted for 385 yards of total offense - overtaking David Neill for second in Wolf Pack history - with 297 yards through the air and 88 on the ground. Jerico Richardson tallied his second 100-yard receiving game of the season, catching 10 passes for 122 yards.

Nigel Haikins led the Pack defense with 10 stops and a forced fumble.
