Named for the red sandstone formations found throughout the site, the park offers a beautiful setting for hiking, picnicking, and viewing of petroglyphs (ancient rock art). Be sure to check out the visitors center for more on the park’s geology and history. Head north again — hopefully your golf clubs are packed — via Hwy. 169 and I-15 to the city of Mesquite. Founded in the late 1800s as a farming town, Mesquite today is a golfer’s destination, with seven challenging courses. Hit the greens, or stroll the town. Stop in at the Virgin Valley Heritage Museum for a look at historical items or information on a self-guided walking tour of the city. Overnight in Mesquite DAY 2 From Mesquite, travel south on I-15 to Overton for a visit to the Lost City Museum, featuring Anasazi Indian artifacts from Pueblo Grande de Nevada, an area that was covered by water from Lake Mead as it backed up behind Hoover Dam. From here, you’ll head south on highways 169 and 167 toward Lake Mead, created when Hoover Dam backed up the Colorado River. There are several main access points to Lake Mead; one spot to consider is the Callville Bay Resort & Marina, which rents boats and personal watercraft. Continue your trip around Lake Mead to Hoover Dam, built during the Great Depression to produce hydroelectric power. Here you can explore the visitors center or sign-up for a tour; you also may want to drive across the Mike O’Callaghan-Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge (the Hoover Dam Bypass), the longest arch-suspension bridge in North America. From here, head southeast to Boulder City. Overnight in Boulder City DAY 3 Wake up in Boulder City, one of only two non-gaming towns in Nevada. Be sure to explore the Nevada State Railroad Museum or indulge in a zip line flight at Bootleg Canyon Flightlines. From Boulder City, travel south on U.S. 95 and Hwy. 163 to Laughlin, on the banks of the Colorado River. Tour the riverside by sand rail (vehicles built for off-road terrain) or take a riverboat cruise or water taxi trip. Overnight in Laughlin DAY 4 From Laughlin, head north, back to the bright lights of Las Vegas.
